Contender is releasing them after all, apparently an exclusive to MVC for the time being:
Dear [stormsweeper]

We did announce the MVC-exclusive release of the DVD in the last newsletter (with a general release in October), and MVC have been aware of it ever since we agreed to do the release a couple of months ago. Though I notice this morning from their website that the information’s not been updated, so maybe the message didn’t get through…

I should say also that we’ve been made aware that the rights for Season 4 are not available – on the down side, this means the third year will be our last Lexx DVD release, but on the plus side, it sounds as though another company is gearing up to release it. Unfortunately we don’t know who, but if I can find out, it will be mentioned in the next newsletter.

    With thanks and kind regards

This 4-disc boxed set comes as an MVC exclusive and is released 16th June.
MVC still hasn’t updated their site. Don’t know if they would ship outside of the UK, either.

MVC finally has it on their site. They ship to most of the EU and to Australia as well. Not an endorsement for MVC, really, just taht they have an exclusive until October it seems.

A slightly different comment : Why is it not so common for multizone DVD’s in other Countries. South Africa is Zone 2, but because of my multi-zone dvd player I don’t have to worry about it at all. I just order from amazon.

I really don’t understand all this zone stuff. Are multizone players illegal in the UK?

Zoning is an attempt to regulate DVD releases to maximize profits in different markets. It’s not a law, just an industry standard. In the US, multi-zone players are pretty rare, at least out of the box. None of the big manufacturers sell them here. (although some stores “import” the multizone ones)

I’m in the US, so it’s not an issue for movies, since they almost always come out here first. TV shows are a different matter, as they usually get released on DVD in R2 before R1.

I thought you were from the UK. Regardless, Im amazed to find out the multizone players are not common. I would wager that 90% of the players here are multizone. Sony, Phillips, Aiwa… all of the main brands manufacture multizone players.

It works really well for me, as most of my hard to get stuff I buy off the net, and that means it usually comes from the States.

Hah, guess I should have noticed this thread, as I was found them completely by chance in my local MVC. Here’s a copy of my posts to the Fanclub group:
You know they said that Series 3 would only ever be available on VHS in the UK? Well MVC are now selling the complete series 3 in a boxed set of 4 DVDs.

    http://www.mvc.co.uk/common/product.jhtml?pid=20002011

They are labelled as ‘exclusive’: whether that means the box or the DVDs themselves I don’t know, but I haven’t found them on any of the other online stores I’ve checked, including Contender’s own. From the outside they are the usual Contender fare with the same style packaging (I never did find out whether they are still using Aitch Creative for the designs) and the spine image continues on from the 2.4 box. However, corners have been cut and pennies pinched as far as the contents goes, as there are no special features and while they still have a pretty Cheerful Scout menu system, it is not animated like the previous discs were. Still, better than nothing. Oh, and if you’ve got an MVC near you you’re better off popping in there as (using my MVC card) I payed only £25, while the onile price is £27 plus postage. And ignore what it says on the site, it’s rated 15 not 12.

On the subject of UK DVDs, has anyone heard anything further from Momentum since they announced they were releasing Series 4 in the UK? I’ve not had a peep from them since then, not even a reply to my email about it.

Ah, found some info from the Contender site:

Living in the USA can suck for cult sci-fi.

In the past (havent looked in a few years) the cheapest PAL converter, VCR, was 150-200 dollars more than a regular NTSC VCR.

Why? The same reason we don’t use the Metric system which is insanly more efficient. American companies bitch and moan about Microsoft but they all do the same things, it’s lame.

As for the new DVD players its turning into quite the same thing. I heard recently they’re thinking of doing away with Regions in the US(Fat chance), hopefully it’s true.

The best thing I can advise is to buy a DVD player for your computer. The region encoding is software, so it’s easily hacked to universal.

Nothing heard here, although the fellow from Kult-TV who responded to me implied that Contender went to get the rights to S4 and couldn’t get them… will really be a pain if Momentum sits on them and doesn’t produce anything, since Contender changed their minds.

if there is actually a law in the US that says, ‘Thy Shall Not Buy Multizone DVD Players In This Country”.

I have an old creative DXR2 DVD in my old PC and that was easy to hack. Well, patch was the word. Still, watching DVDs off the PC isn’t the same as having a decent setup.

No, but the media companies behind regioning are all US companies, and the manufacturers have contracts with them. Contract lawsuits are big business in the states.

In other words; which is preferred; the R1’s or the R3 set.
someone must have the contender s3 by now?

Is the contender R2 really as lacking in extras as I’ve heard? Going by Aleck’s old postings, the R1 they at least tried with.

and picture; as NSTC is smaller than PAL, is the R1 master a cropped version of the PAL one (I can’t envision Lexx having the budget to render the CGI for two versions.), or was it originally NSTC, and expanded to PAL proportions?

In other words; which region is Fire, and which is Water? 🙂

As I mentioned above, Much, the S3R2 discs have no special features whatsoever. No subtitles, no animated menus, no nothing except for the raw footage and buttons to access it. I can’t comment on the tranfer or picture quality, as I’ve not seen the R1 discs and I’m not an expert on things DVD (and probably don’t have a good enough quality DVD player to make distinctions in image quality anyway)

    Your earlier quote, actually. 😉

Yup; that’s one of the ‘reviews’ I read elsewhere. (total of two, I think. 🙁 )

Is Alecks still around? I’d like to know if the NSTC master his company used is the original format… (R1 still seems the way to go…) 😕

    Thx. 🙂

    Since I was quoting myself, I don’t think there’s much of a difference :p
