KeymasterThere wasn’t a whole lot of revelations on
the chat tonight with the VP of programming
for sci-fi..he basically said that Lexx was
a strange show, and who else would show it
but them..but he did say that the eps for
next year would run uninterrupted this time.
He also did mention that the Lexx and other
series would be open for reruns..but that was
about it, I saw no Lexx questions get through, although I could have missed it..
but lots of Farscape, IMan, Prey, and First
Wave questions..rats.. 12th October 2001 at 7:23 am #49305Flamegrape

GuestI badgered the moderator through the entire chat, trying to find out if SciFi would back a new Lexx show. I also wanted to know if they would consider showing reruns during the hiatus at a more reasonable time than 2am Monday morning.
*sigh*
Looks like Lexx is still SciFi’s red-headed stepchild.

Because he doesn’t have to. It’s obvious by now that SciFi doesn’t give a rat’s ass about this show, despite putting up money for it. It should have been obvious when they refused to air all of S2, and showed what episodes they did run out of sequence. It should have been obvious when they ceased running S3 after 5 episodes and went on hiatus for months. It should have been obvious when they relegated LEXX to the Graveyard Shift and allowed its ratings to plummet. It should have been obvious when they promised a full-scale media blitz for this season and reneged on the deal. It should have been obvious when they refused to promote it when it arrived.
Now it’s official. We have official confirmation that the pinheads in charge there don’t care enough about the show to even ANSWER THE FANS’ QUESTIONS. Oh, sure, they’ll chat up their other fine programming, as long as it’s profitable for them to do so, but their THIRD RATED SHOW, a show that has beat the majority of their other programming with NO PROMOTION WHATSOEVER, gets ignored by the schmuck in charge.
I hope that Salter is paying attention, though I’m pretty sure that they’re sick of playing with the nimrods as it is. Alliance Atlantis has a strong foothold in syndicated original programming, and I’m relatively sure that they’re convinced that LEXX has not even begun to reach its full potential, audience-wise. I would strongly recommend that AA (in conjunction with Paul D and the remnants of what was Salter Street), if they are to go for a spin-off series, completely bypass the entire SciFi Channel inanity and go straight for the syndicated market. They have the episodes of LEXX needed to break the barrier and get the name out there better than SF is willing to do. But to even consider putting a spin-off series on SF is to apply the kiss of death.
Gosh, they’re a swell bunch of folks, aren’t they?

Guest*sigh..
“Hear you nothing that I say?”
It has been obvious to me all along.
Beg SciFi for a 5th season now you could, but… you would have destroyed all for what they have fought and suffered.

GuestThere was actually very little specific info on any of the shows people asked about. Lots of “we’re open to the possibility”, “we look at all options”, “we read fan letters” blah blah blah.
He did manage however, to list everything coming up in the next couple of months and mention Firestarter , The Miniseries (or whatever it is) several times. And there was some fairly non-instructive going on about SciFi channel strategy, how ratings are measured etc. Aleck is right, SciFi has no real interest in Lexx : I’m not sure what made them go with it in the first place, but they seem to be mystified and unnerved by what they have on their hands now–even though it’s getting ratings. It’s a very strange thing.

Oh, it was obvious, but it wasn’t *official*. And as obvious as it was, it was like we were just wagging our fingers at them, going “Oh, you naughty SciFi people… …You silly gerbils can’t figure *anything* out, now can you?” And while it was obvious that the potential for them to pull a MST3K on LEXX was there, I think the majority of people were just walking around oblivious to the fact that this was precisely what was going down.
I mean, people called them *gerbils* fercrissake. They were given a *cute nickname* by people. Gerbils are *cute*. Gerbils are *harmless*. Gerbils may not have the cognitive capacity to lead, but they’re just cute but dumb animals! What damage can *they* do?Turns out they can do a *lot* of damage.
And I may be going out on a limb here, because I don’t know who’s lurking about reading the posts, and possibly peeking in on discussions (not that SciFi *cares* what people are saying about the show, so what am I worried about?), especially working where I do, but “gerbils” is not the word I’d use to describe them.
I don’t know if I should use the words I’d use to describe them in mixed company. DT might be shocked.

GuestI missed the chat, no great loss from reading the log.
SciFi Channel puts money up for Season 4, and then does nothing to promote the show. Why? That’s what has me stumped. Lexx is sent to the 2 am graveyard. For goodness’ sake, other shows which are not even in production anymore have better timeslots, such as Dark Skies. Why not switch?
Is there some sort of financial upside for SciFi for screwing Lexx over? At least that would make some sense.
