History (from wikipedia)
In the mid-1980s, the fledgling British TV network Channel 4 introduced Max Headroom, a supposedly ‘computer-generated’ talk show host; actually actor Matt Frewer in heavy makeup, though this fact wasn’t initially publicized. To create the background story for their new star, Channel 4 produced 20 Minutes into the Future in 1985, a dystopic look at a run-down near-future dominated by television and large corporations.
The film introduces Edison Carter (Matt Frewer), a television reporter trying to expose corruption and greed. In the movie, reporter Carter discovers that his employer, Network 23, has created a new form of subliminal advertising (termed “blip-verts”) that can be fatal to certain viewers. While attempting to flee the network headquarters with proof, Edison suffers a serious head injury, caused by banging into a low-clearance sign labeled “Max. Headroom”. Believing him killed, the network’s chief executive orders Bryce Lynch, an adolescent genius working as a scientist for Network 23, to digitally record Carter’s mind. The recording will then be used to create a computer-based replacement for Carter in order to hide his death. The resulting program achieves a life of its own as the eccentric, unpredictable entity (adopting the name “Max Headroom”, from the last object Carter saw before being knocked out) which moves through computer and television networks at will. Meanwhile, a merely unconscious Carter is rescued from a body bank by colleague Theora Jones (Amanda Pays) and with her help eventually defeats Network 23.
In 1987, the TV movie’s story formed the basis of a full-fledged drama television series rather than an entertainment show. The original one-hour film was re-shot as a pilot program for a new series broadcast by the U.S.-based ABC television network. The pilot featured plot changes and some minor visual touches, but held the same storyline. The only original cast retained for the U.S. version series were Matt Frewer (Max Headroom, Edison Carter) and Amanda Pays (Theora Jones); W. Morgan Sheppard later joined the cast as “Blank Reg”; Jeffrey Tambor co-starred as “Murray,” Edison Carter’s neurotic editor.
The U.S. series expanded on the cyberpunk themes in the British TV movie but otherwise had no other connection to the British music video show. In perhaps a unique arrangement in the history of television, the U.S. spin-off series featuring Max Headroom was a fictional drama, while its main character was originally created for a non-fiction entertainment show in Britain.
The series began as a mid-season replacement in spring of 1987, and was sufficiently popular to be renewed for the fall television season, but (ironically) the viewer ratings could not be sustained and Max Headroom was cancelled part-way into its first broadcast season; leftover episodes aired in spring 1988. Plans for a cinema version titled, Max Headroom for President, were mentioned in the media, but the film was never produced.
