In a Sci-Fi Wire interview on 3/31/2004, Patrick McGoohan has finally admitted that the “Number Six” character in the cult favorite “The Prisoner” was intended to be a follow up of the “John Drake” character from the classic spy show, “Danger Man.”
McGoohan said:
“We had always intended ‘The Prisoner’ to be a followup to ‘Danger Man,’ but ran into trouble over negotiations with Ralph (Smart) over the use of the character’s name. Frankly, it came down to money. Negotiations had been going well right up until the end, but then the bottom fell out. We had already started filming, several scripts were already in place. It was too late to revamp the character, so we just went ahead with it. We knew that if we never used the name, we could probably still get away with it. And we did.”
