Keymasteron from my wish list…
i caught some of an episode of Blake’s 7 the other day. despite the naffness of the costumes and the wobbly sets and equally wobbly special effects, it is one show i believe deserves to be classed as a legend. despite its age, the story still grabbed me. it wasn’t like some of the other shows i used to watch and enjoy when i was younger (i’m thinking along the lines of Buck Rogers, etc)- which now look like tat. it has kept its magic. it is a show i would willing go out and buy, not only to bring back memories, but to fill in the gaps- i think i only ever saw one ep with Blake in it!!3rd September 2002 at 3:03 am #43739Anonymous
Guestso what about everyone else then? is there just one particular show from days gone by that you’re dying to see again? have you seen shows that you’ve seen many years ago and once enjoyed recently, only to wonder what the hell you saw in them?

ParticipantI worshipped Space:1999 when I was a kid in the 1970s. About ten years later, I somehow managed to record one or two of the Space:1999 “movies”; they were merely two similar episodes put together and marketed as movies. Then around 1990 my friend bought the episode on laserdisc. It wasn’t until then that I realised how cheesey the show was. But I still like it very much.
About Blake 7. At DragonCon 2002, I happened to pass by a vendor selling videotapes. On her demonstration television, a science-fiction show was playing. The accents, quality of sets and special effects suggested to me that it was Dr. Who from the 1970s. But I could quickly tell that it wasn’t. Some old geezer was there at the booth looking the tapes of the show over and deciding if he was going to purchase them. I asked him what it was. I guessed that it was Blake 7 and I was right. I commented that I had been told that there were some similarities between Blake 7 and Lexx. He winced and said that was sort of true. But then he completely turned me off by saying that Lexx used to be really good but turned to total crap when it became a series on the SciFi Channel. I told him that he should give season three a look, but he just didn’t want to hear it. That was all I could really say because I could tell that he had already prejudged the show. That left a bad taste in my mouth and I probably won’t be looking for Blake 7 tapes any year soon.
But the experience left me wondering how many types of sci-fi fans there are these days. This fellow was clearly very picky about his sci-fi and was going to tell you how much he dispises something without any thought to if the person he’s talking to may actually like the show. I didn’t get into any deep conversation with the guy. He was there at the table to buy Blake 7. I just rolled my eyes, shrugged, and went on my merry way. But I thought to myself, “I’m a science-fiction fan, but I’m not anything like this guy. There had to be at least a dozen different varieties of fans at this convention. I wonder how many general categories there are?”
