KeymasterI could have sworn there used to be a Blake’s 7 section at Saddy’s and normally wouldn’t post this here, but:
If there are any Blake’s 7 fiends out there, contact me privately by email, I’m dumping a collection on ebay, and if anyone is looking for anything in particular, I may have it..
And I hear they’re doing a remake! It’s going to have to be without Paul Darrow, he must be 100 by now! 7th November 2001 at 5:29 am #50283Anonymous

I’ve heard very little about this Blake’s 7 remake, do you know what’s going on with it?
I think all the original crew must be getting on a bit, and it be interesting to see if they will still be cheap on special effects, like the three empty bottle’s of
washing liquid it took to make the Liberator.
Still, in it’s time it was one helluva programme, kinda Lexxy in some ways…methinks.

GuestYes, they’ve been talking about it on the sci-fi network for awhile, I know they have one planned, and nothing could have been cheesier than the special effects for that show, except for maybe…Doctor Who, but they were both on frugal budgets.
As for the Lexx-Blakes’s 7 comparison..
1. the captian is an outlaw, wanted for termination after being sentenced to death.
2. He steals a ship, that has a talking sentient ‘computer’ with other various renegades, outlaws, etc, in a search for either a new home, or a means to reach one.
3. He is accompanied by a man in black, with a cold disposition, who has no compuction with killing, and has a devastating effect on female fans not unlike you-know-who..
4. They’re hounded and chased and given to exploring new planets that always seem to get them into trouble..Anything ring a bell yet?

There was once a Blake’s 7 topic, but never a section (as far as I’ve been here).

Yeah, I think I mentioned that in an earlier post. Lexx borrows from a lot of sci-fi.
I always thought Blake’s 7 was pretty good. It’s sort of like Doctor Who, only with a low budget.

GuestI think, to be fair to Lexx and other new Sci-Fi programmes, that it must verging on the impossible to create a T.V series that doesn’t call on the exploits of previous series’, creating a premise of something new seems beyond most people’s imagination.
But Lexx did try to expand it’s original idea’s, but it will, like other Sci-Fi genre’s, be bogged down by what came before.
Personally I can’t wait to see what a 21st century Blakes 7 would be like, also someone should have a crack at an updated Space 1999…or at least a movie.

Guesthi maya!!!
you know… i’ve never even *seen* blake’s 7, but i used to proof read (not spell check — trust, you don’t want ME spell checkin your fic hehe… i just read it to see if it *made sense*… another thing you may not want me to do — but i digress… *G*) fan stories of blake’s 7 for a buddy of mine and i thought the show sounded REALLY COOL!
then i saw some pictures from it online… and -GAH- it just looked so old and corny. :o/ i blew it off, but i still wonder what ppl see in it since i meet fans of the show all the time. i can not stomach dr. who so i think i let that opinion influence me, too.
if it ever comes on pbs here i might try it, but i gotta know: do the acting and stories make up for the horrible look of the show? :o|
good luck on ebay!
*hugs*

I wouldn’t say it has a “terrible” look. The alien makeup, modelwork, and C.S.O. matting are all mediocre to awful, but some of the design is good. The acting isn’t that bad either (although it did have Colin Baker in it ). Some of the stories were great, though (the head writer was Terry Nation! ), and the music was excellent. My favorite episode of the show is Animals (I’m pretty sure that’s the title), about bioengineering. Sure, all the “organic machines” look like they’re midgets covered in duct tape, but it is a powerful story.
Blake’s 7 isn’t anywhere near Doctor Who level (I cringe to think there was a crossover planned). It’s really more Lost in Space territory. Okay, and with quite a few amazing episodes in each season. Definite remake potential.

I remember it being said in a Spider Robinson story that ideas aren’t created but discovered, therefore there are only a finite number of them.

GuestWell, you have to remember how long ago these shows were done, Doctor Who ran for about a million years, and the Blake’s 7 shows were cut of the same kind of studio cloth, the budgets were not nearly a tenth of what studios are given today, so the fact that they accomplished what they did with so little is a credit to the production team and the actors.
You also must realize that shows of this type require a certain amount of suspension of disbelief in order to work, you take it for granted the fx are cheesy, but you buy it to enhance your enjoyment of the story. If you concentrate too much on why ORAC sounds like a schoolmaster, or his panels twinkle funny, then you’re going to miss a part of the drama that is important to the story. The character development in that show was the primary engine that pushed everything along, I believe that’s one of the reasons the show garnered such a cult following, much the same as Lexx. GuestI think to be fair to Blakes 7 and Dr Who, the Fx were as much as could be expected for the time, animatronics was in it’s infancy and there were no digital tools available, and that the BBC is a cheap and nasty station.
I saw an American remake of Dr Who, and I was impressed with the makeover they gave it, I think Blakes 7 has the potential to have a bigger impact in terms of FX than DR Who, as it’s that type of storyline.
Blakes 7 also has a more cult appeal than Dr Who, Dr Who appealed to the masses, where Blakes 7 seemed to want to be daring, but wasn’t allowed to be, if it had, it would have been the Lexx of it’s time.

Actually, Doctor Who did use computer graphics, as early as 1986. And if you compare season 26 of Doctor Who to season 1 of Star Trek: Next Generation (they were both 1988-89) the Who looks a lot better. I find that show incredibly appealing (though certain parties on this board like to ridicule my Who appreciation).
Blake’s 7 was really lower quality than Doctor Who, in terms of both effects and plot. But it was a good show, and a remake could do it wonders. The problem is few science fiction shows have been remade into good films. There are exceptions, however (Lost in Space).
