I made the mistake of installing a Corel product on my computer. I uninstalled it and now when I click on a jpeg or bitmap or gif and high light it.. no little preview thumbnail pops up on the left hand side in Windows Explorer. I cannot see what a pic is unless I open it or use quick view. I have my pages set to look like web pages. The pics just aren’t showing up.
I installed Corel Print House Magic 4.0 which over-rode all those files. After I removed it they no longer previewed. I installed it again and it still didn’t do it.
Anyone that can offer some help please do. Suggestions like “call tech support” or “reformat” will be met with severe name-calling and bad-mouthing and ranting.

-James T. Kirk9th August 2001 at 9:48 am #47994AnonymousGuestX, I use Corel 8 and have had the same problem, the only way I know of is to go into regedit and delete any registration files that appear with Corel, don’t do this if you are unsure.
Have you checked add/remove programs to see if all Corel applications have been removed?.
What actually happens is that the computer still thinks that Corel is the default program for displaying pics and will only show you pics under a corel extension, because Corel is not there is can’t see anything.
The same goes for music files sometimes, Windows decides that the most used program is the one it should display.
Hope this helps mate.

What should I type under “Find: files” to look for any Corel files?
And what should I look for in Reg Edit and what folder in that would it be in?

Ok X, regedit is only used if you want to clear complete existence of Corel from your system, and should only be done if you are sure.
There is another way to see the images on it explorer though, what you need to do is:
Click on view in explorer> go to folder options> look at the tabs at the top and click on file types> you will see a list of registered formats, search for the ones with corel on them and remove> then look at .bmp and .jpeg and make sure that bmp is associated with explore and jpeg is associated with iexplore…and that should do it.
If you need to check for any further files related to Corel in explorer, then simply type Corel and you should find them, unless they have been removed by the un-installation.
Personally X, I think Corel is the dogs bollox when it comes to graphic programs, I don’t know abot the Corel program you have, but Corel 8 is easily better than Adobe, as Adobe is for novices and Corel 8 will give a better idea of graphic design as it is more advanced and more in depth.

Squishy9th August 2001 at 11:57 pm #47997AnonymousGuestI tried re-installing it again to see if that would fiX the problem and then just change what programs opened the file types. Well, when I did, the file types no longer appeared under file types. They all appeared together under a single Corel file type. So I couldn’t do what I wanted to do. The images still didn’t preview.
I deleted everything from Reg Edit having to do with Corel that I could find. For some reason the file search never turned up anything. I had to look manually through all the folders.
I think whatever part of Windows that does that got wrapped in a Corel shell and Corel, being the evil program that it is, took it down with it. It’s just gone now. I have tried everything I can think of under Folder Options and File Types. Nothing worX. I only have a restore disk because that’s all ours came with cause mom and dad thought it would be better to buy one ready to go from Sears.
If worse comes to worse I suppose I could back up everything I want to keep on CD and God forbid, use the restore CD. If that doesn’t work I will destroy Corel.
ThanX anyways, Squishy. I think I’m just gonna buy a Mac when I get the money.

I’m sorry you couldn’t fix it, but there are quite a few programs that behave this way, for the most part it’s windows fault for insisting on using a deleted programs extension files.
Corel itself is a great program and I would be lost without it, it’s what got me interested in GD all those many years ago!!!

Squishy10th August 2001 at 3:23 am #47999AnonymousInactiveOK.. try this:
hold down shift, then right click on an image file, then select ‘open with’, then check ‘always open with’ then select Internet Explorer from the list.
If that doesn’t work try creating a .reg file with the following in it (this is a text file with the extension .reg)
code:
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.jpg] @="jpegfile" "Content Type"="image/jpeg" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.gif] @="giffile" "Content Type"="image/gif"
The number of times I’ve had to fix this sort of thing.. but I usually try all sorts of things to fix it and I’m not entirely sure which work and not sure how to describe some of them easily..

I’m really not sure where to create the file and what reg edit folder to store it in.
I can open pictures just fine. It’s the item description thumbnail preview in Windows Explorer when you view it as a web page that is not working, ya know when you click on an itme to highlight it amd it tells you when it was created and file size, and if it’s a pic it says, “generating preview”.. well it’s not generating previews anymore.
10th August 2001 at 7:09 pm #48001AnonymousInactiveIt’s to do with MIME-types and stuff like that.. they need to be set right for explorer to generate thumbnails/previews.
I think those registry entries will do it (you can edit them using regedit by going to [b]HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.jpg[/b] and [b]HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.gif[/b] or through windows by opening a folder and selecting [b]Folder Option[/b] from the [b]View[/b] menu, then the [b]File Types[/b] tab)
The File Type for [b].jpg[/b] should be [b]JPEG Image[/b] and the Content Type should be [b]image/jpeg[/b] (to find out the current file type look under [b]HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.jpg[/b] in the registry or right click the file and select [b]Properties[/b] – it’s probably set to something like [b]CorelDraw Graphic[/b] at the moment)
To create registry file open notepad, copy and past the text into it then do a save as, but change the file type from .txt to ‘all files (*.*)’ and enter the name as images.reg (after first selecting the directory you want to create it in)
