KeymasterPandemonium Films have bought the film rights to Neil Gaiman’s horror-fantasy novel Coraline. Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) is reported to be interested in adapting the story and directing (does this mean that the film will be animated?)
Coraline, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, tells the story of a bored young girl who, in the course of exploring her family’s new apartment, discovers a door leading to a scary alternate world.
No cast has been lined up for the film but according to Neil Gaiman’s Website Michelle Pfeiffer was set to star (!!). The posting has since been changed to state that the film will star a “well-known and highly thought-of actress,” (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter).
Coraline is expected to start production early next year for a late 2003 release.

Oh, they’ve thought of it, Sad. You just don’t want to see what they thought of. They brought Sam Hamm in to do a treatment, and he turned it into some slam-bang action thing. Neil was, reportedly, horrified. You really couldn’t do Sandman justice in film, anyway, unless you planned to go the Lord of the Rings route and do the entire storyline. Doing just one arc (“A Doll’s House,” for instance) wouldn’t be satisfactory, as there’d have to be some conclusion. And then you’d have to sign everyone on for a 10-picture deal or something, and the SAG won’t let that happen.
There was talk at one time of Neil himself doing an adaptation of Death: The High Cost of Living, but I don’t think that ever got past the talking stages.
What we *need*, mate, is a Preacher film, scripted by Garth Ennis.

InactiveDidn’t Gaiman write the English interpretation of Mononoke Hime? I’ve a feeling he wrote that strange series (Neverwhere?) that I caught bits and pieces of years ago too.

Yes, and yes. NeverWhere was based on his novel, and co-scripted by him (though I think that Lenny Henry did some extensive revisions on the script). He was pretty unhappy with the results, though.

Yep! I can’t dissagree with that. However, with all this comic-book interest in the film industry … erm… or film interest in the comic book industry. The next adaptation has just GODDA be Watchmen or.. or … ‘V’ for Vendetta or… or… even a decent Ben Edlund story like ‘Tick versus Tick’.

GuestAustralia is a million years behind any other country when it comes to sci-fi. If we have it, you’ve HAD it!
I only saw the last couple of episodes myself, but from what I’ve seen and read, they’re precisely the same.16th August 2002 at 12:56 am #43735Anonymous
InactiveI saw snatches of Neverwhere when it first aired on BBC2, but not seen hide nor hair since. You could try the BBC online store (there’s an american version of it as well iirc) or somewhere like blackstar.

Actually, there’s not been an American release of Neverwhere (unless you mean that there’s an American version of the BBC online store, which there is). Acorn is trying to negotiate obtaining the US rights to it as we speak.
