(an edited re-post of something from another forum)

What are your favourite cult, fantasy, sci-fi, horror films and TV programs? And which programs do you despise?

This is a topic for not only discussing, or mentioning, our fave sci-fi, horror, fantasy, or cult classics, but also for links to great info on the films and programs (including film trailers, film and TV pics, film and TV audio files, reviews etc.

As for film:
Two of my absolute favourite sci-fi films are Clockwork Orange and Brazil.

Here is a very good link to Brazil (including a trailer, pics, sounds and more): http://www.trond.com/brazil/multimedia.html

Clockwork Orange
QT trailer: http://www.patricklarkin.com/trailers/lg-co-15.mov (slow without broadband)
Or for more C.O. trailer options (perhaps the better site!): http://www.cinema.com/trailers/item.phtml?ID=58

And some other faves of mine:

Zardoz (a sometimes laughably bad movie, yet intriguing)
Here is the Zardoz trailer — a must see (QuickTime): http://moviefilmfest.com/html/Zardoz_MGM_DVD.htm

2001 A Space Odyssey: To see trailer please scroll down on the page: http://kubrickfilms.warnerbros.com/multimedia/ind ex_vignette.html

Barbarella
The trailer: http://moviefilmfest.com/html/barbarella.htm

Logan’s Run
Be sure to check out this very cool Flash site (turn on speakers): http://www.logansrun.com/%5B/url%5D
And here is a link to one of their trailers: Lo gans run trailer

Videodrome — weird and, quite possibly, lame trailer, weirder movie: http://moviefilmfest.com/html/videodrome.htm

City of Lost Children
trailer: http://moviefilmfest.com/html/CityofLostChildren.htm

Blade Runner
trailer: BRDC trailer

Solaris
trailer: http://www.cinema.com/trailers/item.phtml?ID=7375
(Oops, it’s to the remake, I loved the original)

THX-1138 http://www.thx-1138.org/%5B/url%5D

Bad Taste: good site lots of movie clips, and good for linking to Peter Jackson’s other films like Brain Dead, and the fabulous Heavenly Creatures, as well as that recent one, can’t remember what it was called, you know the one with the leprechauns or something with the hairy, smelly feet? I think they made a novel out of the movie or something. Here’s the link: bad taste movies (broadband seriously recommended)

Some other sci-fi faves (no links): Scanners, The Omega Man, Delicatessan, Fahrenheit 451, Morons From Outer Space, Time Bandits, Dune, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Stalker, Dune and Alien.

And in horror: The Hunger, The Wicker Man, An American Werewolf in London, The Vampire’s Kiss (more comedy than horror), Basket Case, The Man Who Fell to Earth and Cat People.

I’ll also mention the Monty Python films because not only are they cult classics, but they could all be described as fantasy — they’re not in the realist, neo-realist, or post neo-realist tradition. Also, there are hooror and sci-fi elements to the films:
For example, the Life of Brian has an important sci-fi element (when Brian is “picked up” by the space ship). It is also has a horror element in Biggus Dikkus — he gave me the willies!

The Quest for the Holy Grail is at times blood-curdling horror: the killer bunny, the Knights Who Say “Ni”, the fearsome and brave black knight who guards the bridge (gruesome), the three-headed knight, the fearsome multi-eyed monster in the cavern, and the devil women at the Castle Anthrax!

And as for The Meaning of Life — ooh scary — what would you do if death came knocking on your door? How about being chased to your death by a group of topless joggers? What a way to go! And what about the torture chamber at the “conversation restaurant,” or live organ transplants? Or being a child traumatised by the thought of playing rugby? Or, most horribly, what about Mr. Creosote? He exploded!
http://www.mwscomp.com/python.html Python-online

And as a cult film, I must mention Spinal Tap! Great site: http://www.spinaltap.com/%5B/url%5D

As for tv, I love Lexx (if you’ve ever visited the Sadgeezer.com site you’ll find amazing info there ), and The Prisoner, Dr. Who etc.

Here is a really great site for cult sci-fi and horror film reviews, images and sounds: Eccentric-cinema

So if you have any intersting sci-fi, fantasy, horror, cult film, or tv links, I’d appreciate them.

Sadddy: Many thanks for fixing up those broken links! Now if only you’d fixed my spelling too — lol. I said it once before, but one of the things I love about this site is that the mods actually improve on the threads — that’s real dedication. Kudos!

Dragula: I totally agree with you. Great films, great Lexx, and I also despise Andromeda! It would also be for at least a thousand reasons if I’d been able to get through more than five minutes of that show before changing channels. We actually had an interesting discussion on it over at LEXX.com: http://lexx.com/board/viewthread.php3?TID=1521&lastpage=go
I’m FunkET over there.

Invisible Lunatic: I also like Red Dwarf, but Clockwork Orange at a measley number 9? Come on! It should at least be at number 8!

By the way, did you check out any of the links? I highly recommend the Zardoz trailer.

Have you seen Quark?

Rather than starting a new thread for this question, I decided to put it here. Seemed appropriate for this thread anyway.

I came across the following site purely by chance and was intrigued by it. Has anyone ever seen this show?: Quark

Oh, and before you click on it, I should warn you:
Warning Star Trek Fans! This is not a 1970’s spin-off of Deep Space Nine!

Oh, did you already click on it? Sorry about that.

I really am interested, and am surprised that I’d never heard of it before — Looks like a prime candiate for a sci-fi cult classic. It’s got girls in skimpy costumes and … ahhh … isn’t that enough?

Not in any particular order
Farscape
Transformers
Earth 2
Babylon 5
Dr Who
City of Lost Children
Ghost in the Shell

Though not really scifi/fantasy I liked Chicago Hope, especially the Dead Duck episode.

Earth 2 was another interesting concept that was not executed that well. It could have done without being so preachy, but I expect that was the result of being on NBC.

I feel like quite the idiot fully quoting myself from my own thread, and re-phrasing my Quark question in a desperate bid for a response to it (any response to it) but those who know me at Lexx.com will know that I am an idiot who desperately craves your response, any response, to all of the questions I pose.

So here goes:

Have you, like me, not seen Quark?

Please, I’m begging you, I need to know! My sanity is in your hands. We’re all sci-fi afficionados here, right? Well surely I can’t be the only one who has been deprived of the possibly wonderful, probably crappy Quark:

Please check out the link: http://www.snowcrest.net/fox/quark/%5B/url%5D

Just from the website I’d love to see the show, but then I’m a faecal connoisseur.

Another question: Is Minority Report worth the price of rental? According to an article in my favourite film magazine Sight and Sound, which is put out by the BFI (British Film Institute), it’s well-worth seeing: Sight and Sound: Article on Minority Report.

Great choices Snooklepie! ๐Ÿ™‚

And rather than starting a new thread… I just came across THIS LINK on The Starlost. Looks like an intriguing series. Have any of you seen the show? It stars Keir Dullea (Bowman from 2001).

One day soon I hope that all these great old shows will be freely available in high-quality streaming format on the web (like with network TV they’d make their money through commercials) — freely available with an emphasis on free.

BTW, speaking of Keir Dullea, I just recently re-watched 2010 on TV (having originally seen it in the cinema), not a very good movie. Totally paled in comparison to 2001 A Space Odyssey.

I actually preferred the movie version of 2001 to the novel (the movie was based on the short story The Sentinel, and the novel came out after the movie). But the book 2010 was much better than the movie version. SUrprised they still haven’t (or have they?) done his 2061: Odyssey 3 as a film (good book).

And I still haven’t read 3001: The Final Odyssey.

Now Rendezvous With Rama, did they ever do that for TV or film?

About 2001; I know Logan; it was a fave of yours; but……. why? I’m really trying to understand if I saw the same movie as you did. I even had to go to see if it was the same DVD. We ARE talking the one with the obelisk and the apes in the beginning, right? The space attendants that look like they just had brain surgery? The oh so captivating colors, etc… etc… etc….? i felt it moved a little slow. Great for those times you want to fish popcorn out of your honey’s tonsils in the theatre but on DVD it may have lost it’s impact some what

I own A Clockwork Orange, I just haven’t watched it yet; that’s for another blustery day at pooh corner here.

I don’t know guys, may be sci-fi is not my thing. I liked Ed Harris in movies like The Abyss but I always really liked Ed Harris. I liked Deep Star Six also and as i can recall I owned Lifeforce at one point or another. The Alien and Aliens rocked. Horror is okay but I think psych thrillers are better.

I suppose that I like 2001 primarily for aesthestic reasons. I find it coldly beautiful, and at times quite surreal (loved the psychadelic final chapter). It’s also a film that I thought captured the loneliness of space very well. I liked the individual scenes more than the overall plot which is scant — one scene that always gets to me is when one of the crew of Discovery is shadow boxing as he jogs around the ship’s centrifuge (passing the sarcophogi), I just felt so isolated watching it. It’s a very cold film, but I really emotionally connected to it. I identify with HAL on some level. I also liked how the monolith imparted intelligence to the apes (how to use tools) and the way they used a bone was to kill other apes — interesting statement. Was a wonderful segue, I thought, from the prehistoric bone technology to the technology of the future — a space station. Also liked that there was room left in the film for individual interpretation (I’ve often thaought that enjoyment of films and music is as much, or more, intellectual as anything else).

2001 is rather slow for a Hollywood film, but not slow at all compared to many of my favourite subtitled arthouse and experimental films. I like slow, gives me time to think and reflect. Never have been a fan of the frenetic “action” movies. If you didn’t like 2001, definitely don’t watch Tarkovsky’s Solaris (another fave of mine).

I thought it a near-perfect film, unlike Clockwork Orange which I can’t wtch anymore due to the sick porn violence (rather like watching a snuff film at times). While violence is disturbing and should be portrayed as disturbing, I felt he unnecessarily revelled, in a way, too much in violence in the film (I feel like a sick voyeur when I watch parts of that film — if you ever do watch it, keep the fast forward button on your remote handy).

I really enjoy the look and craftsmanship of Kubrick films. I didn’t like Eyes Wide Shut which I found tediously pretentious and too full of Kubrick cliches.

BTW, I’m not just into sci-fi, nor was Kubrick. I know several people who loved 2001, but don’t like sci-fi normally. Generally I prefer non-genre films (or films that blend different genres. The Shining is a good example; it is a sort of horror film, more psych thriller probably, but not very horror genre). 2001 also breaks away from some normal sci-fi conventions — definitely not a film just for sci-fi lovers.

I also like Ed Harris, but more for a film like Glengarry Glen Ross than for The Abyss. As for Alien and Aliens: I loved Alien and hated Aliens (Aliens was too cliche action movie for me, and militarism makes me queasy — though I loved how they handled militarism in the sort of parody Starship Troopers).

Thanks Logan; I thought i was really dancing in some alternate universe. I see your points about the film.; may be it’s just not the proper time for this film and me to gel; that’s why I own it. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Yeesh, you’d think with my love of cold art galleries and such that I could get into it; oh sheesh i guess I’m saying that i really don’t want that coldness right now; I think we seen enough of that; I mean very little value in much…. even in one human life.

I’m not saying life is all sunshine and puppies either; but there is a happy medium; and that is what i want to see; the sensationalism and propaganda HAS to go.

I have to see some of your recommended films. I did see part of Logan’s Run; it was on TCM a month or two ago. It was interesting. I also may purchase the season 1 Prisoner dvd’s but it’s the holidays and I have to plan for another move! Here i go again; an0ther F@#$$% move!!!

I think you are right I like the combo; the mix-up of different genres.

Speak oh Funky one; we are listening at your feet! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿ˜›

Hey Ho logan!
I’ve seen Quark. It was my younger sister’s favorite show for a while. It was rather funny, and had a plant character named ficus, who could be rather nasty.

I don’t know why the scifi channel doesn’t show more of this kind of stuff instead of scare tactics or whatever. Unfortunately I can’t remember any of the dialog, just that it was weird. My sister’s other favorite thing to watch at that time was the weekly Godzilla movie, so that can give you an idea of the kind of taste you have to have to like the show.

COOL!

Threads like this is wot makes this SadGeezer pleased to be a member of such a cool community!

It’s nice to see so many knowledgable sci fi fans interested in the ‘base’ media of sci fi TV and films.

For some strange reason I didn’t reply to this thread (?!?!?!) but my fave stuff is:

Films:
Blade Runner, Clockwork Orange, Fantastic Planet, Kin Dza Dza (still working on creating a fansub DVD for you guys, should be soon after I get a new motherboard), the superb 12 Monkeys, Dark Star, Solaris (old Ruskie version), Stalker (scared the crap outa me and bored the hell out of me as well as got right into my bones – cracker!!, Metropolis (I have a thing for shapely robobabes), Ghost in the Shell (which I liked mainly for the theme (soundtrack), but it’s called ‘making a cyborg’ or something like that, which puts you off, all I can think of when I hear the tune (which is in japanese of course), is ‘ and now you ataaaaaa aaaa aaach, the fingers aaaa aaa aa nd the arms (slight quiver in voice) etc.

Series:
Dunno what my fave is currently, prolly LEXX because it’s so nutty, then the amazingly cool and proper definition of sci fi arc, Babylon 5, then the stupendously funny and whacky Red Dwarf, then Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and notable mentions to Star Trek ToS and Voyager (yes I know I’m in the minority here, and it’s not just because of 7 of 9 either!) and Kin Dza Dza (Yes I know it was a film, but it was a flop in the cinema so it was released in Russia as a series and became such a cult that ANYONE who visits Russia will make an instant friend (anywhere and at any time) by simply bending the knees slightly, pointing the toes outwards, slapping your cheeks twice (with both hands) and uttering the immortal words, “Kooo” – it worked with me only a couple of weeks ago when I invited a 17 year old russian model over (with her boyfriend) – my crappy understanding of Russian language was instantly forgiven.

Erm… oh yes, and of course Farscape and the magnificent Aeon Flux and Dune and probably the archetypal sci fi show of all time, The Prisoner.

Welp, that’s my two penneth worth (while a bit drunk), I’ll prolly change my mind when I’m sober, there’s so much good stuff out there. Shame there isn’t much new Cult Sci Fi viewing on TV ๐Ÿ™

Watched the last 15mins “Queen of Blood” on digital TV. It is a pretty old movie but with some good ideas. It’s about a greenish, beehive do-ish vampire alien that lays eggs (in what looks like green jello) all over a space ship.

Also, part of “Angry Red planet” which gave me a new appreciation for low tech special effects. Some really fun film effects, like reverse images and odd colorization.
