Hey Squishy – I just noticed, you got your name back! Although I kind of miss Son of Squishy, et. al. Ah, those were the days…
I think I need that martini now. *clink clink* 20th September 2001 at 8:05 am #48845AnonymousGuestquote:

Hehe, never thought I’d be back to good ol’ Squishy!!!, thought I’d try re-registering using Squishy…and to my surprise it worked.
Yep those were the days, Squishy was writing a list of variations to Squish, some of them were really desperate, but at the time I thought we would never get the board back to normal (I shall be keeping the list in case of emergency!!!).
You all sound like you live the high life with your martini’s, poor ol’ Squishy has to make do with a can of cheap grog!!!

grog is rum, right? fx loves rum, especially mount gay with ginger beer (also known as a ‘dark and stormy’ ) hmmmm, did squishy know that martinis were invented to hide the taste of bathtub gin during prohibition? now of course we have good gin, especially tanqueray, so we ask for dry martinis, as in little to no vermouth, because we no longer have to mask the flavor of the gin

All I see are two cans of Rolling Rock and a bottle of unopened blueberry wine left by persons unknown at least six years ago!20th September 2001 at 8:51 am #48848DalekTek790ParticipantGrogs are small yet vicious reptiles bred for use as weapons by the Rym, a race of ill-tempered insectoids that guard all the gates to Natopia Prime. No, I don’t have a sane answer.
20th September 2001 at 8:52 am #48849AnonymousGuest‘Cmon FX, fork some Rum over to Elmay.
(Hypatia looks on longingly, why can’t US have the same drinking age as Mexico?)Squishy, did you choose your your nick to capitalize on the “Aww, he’s soo cute” responses we lady Lexxians had for Squish?
20th September 2001 at 9:28 am #48850AnonymousGuestI think Fx is right with the rum, pirates used to call their booze ‘Grog’, or at least they did in stories.
And I didn’t know that was why Martini’s were invented, mind you, pouring gin into a bathtub and drinking it, would definitely leave you with wanting for something to take the taste of out of your mouth!!!
Heh, Dalektek, how you doin?, how’s college, and is there a sci-fi book you haven’t read in existence!?!
Hypatia, I need all the sympathy I can get, so yeah, Squishy is a good way of getting petted by ladies, and that I thought Squish was cute as well.

FX is definitely right about the grog issue. As for bathtub gin, it’s not that they poured gin into a bathtub and drank it. During Prohibition, alcohol was illegal in the US, and people would sometimes make their own “gin” (if you could even call it that) in bathtubs (or any other large tub). Hence the name. Of course, just drinking this stuff could kill you, or make you go blind.
I didn’t know about the origin of the martini, though. Wouldn’t vermouth have been illegal and equally hard-to-find during prohibition as well?–Aleck

Maybe that’s why they used it–a few drops of “imported” liquor. Can you make bathtub vermouth?

I was at some out of the way place in England years ago, and they put something called “lovage” in rotgut brandy to make it smooth. I was afraid to ask what it was but it worked.
elmey20th September 2001 at 9:18 pm #48853AnonymousGuestI’d love to find out how Russians make their own PURE vodka in home-made stills.. tasteless but deadly, and apparently leaves no hangover!

No hang over? Probably because all cells affected are instantly vaporized.
Maybe that’s what the docs in Terminal used to reduce Zev to a bucket of goo.21st September 2001 at 8:05 am #48856FXParticipantquote:

FX, honey, no need to apologize. NY is *still* the greatest city in the world, and many of us love it now more than ever – even if we are not in residence.
