I found this in today’s Philadelphia Inquirer. (Sept 3, Page D1)

    Rank Title $ (Millions USD)
    1 Spider-Man 403.7
    2 Star Wars Ep2 300.0
    3 Austin Powers 3 195.8
    4 MIB 2 189.7
    5 Signs 177.2
    6 Scooby-Doo 151.4
    7 Lilo & Stich 140.2
    8 Minority Report 130.0
    9 Mr. Deeds 124.0
10 The Sum of All Fears 118.2

    11 The Bourne Identity *
    12 XXX *
*Values were not given in the article.

Theses figures are for the “summer” (May 3rd-Labor Day) and reflect North American (US and Canada) sales.

Its nice to see 5 out of the top ten being true scifi films, and another 3, maybe 4, having scifi traits.
But don’t get too excited, other scifi films did embarrassingly bad: Pluto Nash (3.8 with a 90 pricetag) and Powerpuff Girls (11.4).
Other scifi films fared well however too: Stuart Little 2 (59.7), Halloween Resurrection (30) and Spy Kids 2 (58.6)

Here’s an article from the 9/2 NYTimes about how the studios are not making any real money off these hits (!?):

Big Hits don’t Ensure Big Profits

My heart bleeds and everything I just wonder what effect it might have on effects intensive scifi movies.
