The current state of Sci FI TV is diabolical!

Sure we’ve never seen as many shows as there are available on TV now, but lets face it – most (in fact the vast majority) or them are complete garbage! No innovation – the same old garbage rechurned seemingly from various soaps.

So what are we going to do about it!? Put up with it? Just sit on our bums and moan on boards like this (like me 😉 ) or shall we all rise up and bloody well make our OWN!

IN a mild drunken stupour, me and Newkate chatted about making our own ten minute short sci fi film. All we needed to do was come up with a cool story (newkate) and video camera (me) and some actors (our palls and neighbors).

Would you guys be interested in seeing home made sci fi. And if so, would you be willing to make your own?

X did it, why not peeps like us!?

Sounds like a cool idea to me!

I’d make some, if I had a videocamera and lived with people as opposed to 2 cats 🙂

But I know I’d definitely love to watch some!

(But you should probably worry about somebody like me who willingly rents Full Moon PIctures’ movies) 😈

The worst aspect of all, is not that there isn’t any good sci-fi on the air. It’s that there’s not even anything good in the *planning* phase currently. Looks like there’s going to be a long drought of TV Sci-Fi in the near future 😡 It’s a good idea Saddy after all this guy:

Normally I’d say it was cyclical, but as Lexx Lurker says, it looks like we’re in for a very looong cycle of dreck. Everyone wants to play it safe and there don’t seem to be any outlets for new and original sci-fi. I find the same to be true in books, all we seem to get are continuations of series that have gone on too long or movie tie ins.

We should make our own. Even if it looks more like Plan 9 from Outer Space than like Blade Runner. At least we’ll have fun doing it! 😆

Over the course of time, I do expect the Internet to become a venue for more original media content–if we can evade the heavy hand of Microsoft and the Hollywood mafia.

Afraid you’ll have to put up with it. 90-95% of all art (be it books, comics, films or sci-fi on tv) is cack with little to distinguish it from the mainstream – you have to dig hard to find the good stuff. As the number of shows increase, you’ll find the number of crappy shows increase along with it. Bear with it.

Oh- home made sf- give it a try. I’m sure people here wouldn’t mind collaborating on a script- not a bad project methinks. 💡 After all we’re not a studio so obsessed with making money we throw out the slightly more eccentric ideas
At the worst it’ll look like Dr Who

Great idea! I’d love to see it, and maybe even make my own. There’s definitely too much bad stuff out there, and not nearly enough bad stuff here! 😉 (j/k)

Is horror alright? I started work on a very short “Boxing Trilogy” before.

The first is the horrific tale of a cardboard box that chases people around and swallows them whole (done partially in stop-motion) called rather imaginatively “The Box That Eats People.”

The second, “Wet Box,” is about a man imprisoned in a small flimsy cardboard box on a desert world, Arrakis (from Lynch’s Dune) However, eventually the rains come, and he is able to break free from his very soggy prison.

And the third concerns a group of commercial head-hunters who poach alien beings for their styrofoam Big Mac box-heads.

😯

Well, 2 nights ago I had this dream that some film company came into my hometown and wanted to shoot a movie called Zeke….I ….Beir and they asked some of my brother’s friends to be in it. 🙄

I told my bro and immediately we started working it all out as a crop circle, Blair Witchy, kinda Amish porn( you know Amish porn… where there are centerfolds of the ladies knees and shots of them milking cows) artistic extravaganza with an existential twist….. (thus the Zeke……I bie……r)

I know don’t quit my regular job 🙄 😳

Saddy, if you make it they will come! Yes I would watch a homemade Scifi movie. You are right about nothing being on air. The genre for some reason seems to be relegated as childrens viewing, so has to be incredibly bland and innoffensive to everybody. Sometimes I think the US scifi channel would run Barney in outer space.

(Come to think of it, isn’t telletubbies sci-fi? But that created a scandal here in the US because of the sexual ambiguity of the purple one with a purse and the po doll’s foul mouth.) In short, it is you Brits who must now carry the torch of bizarre science fiction. Canadain TV seems to have been co-opted completely as a kind of discount outsource for Hollywood.

Welp! Newkate is definately up for it and as soon as I get through producing this Kin Dza Dza DVD for peeps, We’ll prolly have a go. Incidentally, the tempremental but still stable sadgeezer.net is still going! Even when my ISP changes my IP number I can still get things back within a couple of minutes, so we could HOST your own efforts without much of a problem (provided they are not TOO big of course 🙂 )

I’ll keep you posted of progress :/

i’ve had a few sci-fi ideas for books. even managed to put pen to paper on one once. never really thought about something short film-style before now. cracked myself up at work today with thoughts on a story about the local big cat, and various locals being attacked and eaten by someone in a bit furry cat-suit!!! should i go with that one…or is it too much like Dog Soldiers??? 🙄 😆

Snooklepie: That’s funny, I wrote a story many years ago about a bunny called Bobby that was killing people (really a man in a bunny suit). I even turned into an hour and a half long plus two act play for a play-writing class that I’ve always wanted to produce, but it still needs a little work, and I even made a terrible musical version.

Anyway, home-made sci-fi is a fabulous idea!

The inspiration for the cat-thing came from the fact that there is (seriously!!) something large and cat-like running around the local area. my uncle’s seen it- unless large dogs have suddenly learned to climb trees…. he was out night-fishing on night. don’t think he’s been back since….
i wrote a story when i was much, much younger called “Mount Alimar Returns”, fuelled by my obsession for volcanoes and earth sciences- and myth and magic. it was about this volcano that appeared suddenly every so often, and if it was allowed to erupt, “it” would rule the world. the mountain ended up being just a means of entry into this universe,as it were. it sat directly over a porthole sited on another planet in a different universe, and this evil magician used a combination of physics, earth science and his powers to control the porthole and the mountain, so he could gain entry into our universe and try to take over. and, of course, it was me and my friends who were the chosen ones to prevent all this!
i’ve thought a few times about dragging out the old notebook i wrote the story in and updating it. debated as to whether or not to change all the characters into adults- but it would probably take some of the spirit out of it 🙂
