GuestI dont think so personally. Since the 60, probably the late 50s we’ve had the ability to destroy ourselves quite easily.
Only recently we’ve gained mass communication. 50 years ago it was laughable to think you could travel anywhere in the world in under a day. Since the beginning of time we’ve all been isolated more or less.
Think about it if you’re an American or a Russian. 15 years ago both sides were aliens to each other, most had never met a Russian/American and each side *knew* the other side was evil.
Fast foward to today, Russia and the USA find themselves very much alike in terms of individual personalities. If you told someone 20 years ago what our relationship would be like in 2002 with the Russians they would laugh at you. Most people felt in the 60s through the 80s the world was going to end then. Now more than ever there is a peace and familiarity between nations that has never been seen.
Look at the countries without mass communication or modern technology, for the most part its countries like these that fear what they can never know. Its quite easy to get someone angry and riled up over a culture they know nothing about, its quite something else to do it to a culture you can relate to and are familiar with.
Americans and Brits for example have their differences. But they are so close and their cultures so similar that its impossible to ever see these two countries ever go to war anymore.
Look at the Germans, twice in the last hundred years they have attempted to take over the world and impose their values upon others. Today they are allies with most of Europe and a very close friend to the USA. Same goes for Japan.
This is of course just the way I see things. I can just as easily play devils advocate and talk about why we could all go up in flames. But I really dont think it will happen. Of course I dont see a World Government happening in our near future either, but you gotta take one day at a time.
I will agree and argue without a doubt Earth and humanity are doomed *eventually*. Like Hawking said there are just too many variables (virus, asteroids, ozone, ice ages, nukes, etc..) when you are confined to only 1 planet. Once humanity spreads to the galaxy only then can we really start to be assured our entire history as human beings isnt for naught.
