Aeon Flux: Cultures: Monica
There are no rulers in Monica, it is the cultural and political opposite of Bregna.
As a country, it is not ruled by any one person, in fact according to onan, in Thanatophobia, it is not ruled! The little we see of Monica indicates that it is poor and anarchic. Buildings are in a dilapidated state and there is little technology visible. However, the Monicans have freedom. They are allowed to enter Bregna (if the Breens would let them in) and it seems that there are no restrictions to political persuasion.
In the short episode War, we see that Monicans are artistic. A soldier, before leaving to fight a Breen invasion is seen painting a picture. In the same episode we see another soldier patting the head of what I believe is his cute little daughter.
Both these things lead us to believe that the Monicans are a more caring and artistic race.
In Isthmus Crypticus, Una is chastised by her boyfriend Merik. Una indicates that they should end their relationship and Merik asks for a music tape back. For all its problems, Monica seems more relatable and if you had the choice, you may decide that you want to live in Monica rather than Bregna.
Joshua Klessig emailed me a brief but useful synopsis of some information from the Aeon Flux graphical novel “The Herodotus File“
‘Trevor Goodchild found out about the Berognican Reunification Movement (BRM) and decides that they are a threat. He has a person compile a list of Monican double agents that he can use to neutralize the BRM, this is where he discovers Aeon for the first time.
He hires her to do a number of terrorist attacks on the BRM. However, as she does them, she does them in such a way that evidence of the truth gets scattered around (i.e. she blows up the “Relical“, a Monican blimp with losts of artifacts from Berognica. Of course she does this near Bregna airspace, thus causing the scattering of the artifacts all over Bregna).
After Aeon is done, Trevor decides that she knows too much, so he has a underling propose a plan to kill her. The plan, quite strangely, is to implant a bunch of nanites (microscopic robots) in Trevors seminal duct so he has sex with Aeon and the nanites tear her apart from the inside.
But Aeon was prepared because she had some weird, mean, spiky, device in her uterus(!?!!) that eats the nanites (that part is kinda weak), she blows up a wall then and escapes leaving Trevor standing there naked and confused.
The Relical: The blimp that is filled with relics and media including a large BRM donated collection of Berognican artifacts that would help prove the one-world past to be true. (see Bregna)
The Necropolis (HQ): The Necropolis is where the Monicans bury the dead (it is a REALLY tall, featureless, rectangular building. Very large.) Hidden within the catacombs is the main headquarters of the BRM. The BRM communicates encoded information through funeral announcements and in the necrophilia porno magazine “NecroFile”.
BRM meetings are covered under the guise of funerals, the eulogy contains hidden propagandistic messages and instructions.’
I’m not sure how relevant all this is to the animated series, though its certainly an interesting development branch.
