Anime: Summer 2019 – Shows to watch

Are you excited about the Anime summer season for 2019?  in this section we take a look at some of the Sci Fi related shows that will be coming our way.   We will provide a short overview of each of the ones that look the most interesting.

As of today, we are a few days away from the Summer Anime 2019 season and the shows that will be airing look really interesting. Tbh, I say that to myself every 3 months, but hopefully, this will actually be the case!

The Sci Fi SadGeezeres website will be reviewing anime (typically Sci Fi and Fantasy/Game themes) and this seasons reviews will be the first. The criteria for review are the standard Sci Fi SadGeezer criteria: Production, Direction, Characterisation, Storyline, Acting (in this case voice), Fun/Sexy/Cool (that last one generally being the most important). Typically we’ll provide a synopsis for the shows as they air and any ones that we like will get a full review so check back for details once the shows begin airing (and feel free to disagree with the ratings in the forums ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Lets start with the shows that we think that you Sci Fi fans will like the most  – I’m afraid I don’t have any specific insight into these shows but here goes:

Dr. Stone

Lots of people are talking about this and the pics and preview video certainly look like it’s worth checking out.

A bit bloody bleak for me tho! It’s basically about a couple of dudes in a world where all the rest of the people have been turned to stone.

From what I can make out from the preview, two dudes have been revived (i.e they were once stone too). It may be that there will be more peeps revived or it may be a show about what actually happened about righting humanity and reviving everyone.  The statues are quite old though!  Maybe this will be similar to the hugely awesome ‘Girls Last Tour’ (Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou) which was a out a year or two ago.  Alas, the dudes are nowhere near as cute as the girls.  The animation looks good though, looking forward to checking it out.

Crunchyroll will be showing this and they’re taking the whole thing quite seriously with an grand premier screening in Califoirnia on 4th July (before the rest of us can see it on Crunchyroll on 5th July).

Fire Force (Enen no Shouboutai)

Fire Force is another very cool looking anime set in a future Tokyo where people have begun bursting into flames and causing terrible fires.

Apparently there is a cool bunch of firefighters with special skills to help put out the hapless humans,  The premier looks interesting:

he graphics look a little indicative of demon interference I’m guessing that there is some sort of force major out to cause trouble and the special fire-fighter group will fix it.  This is another show with a christian/religious motif which is interesting too (not that I’m particularly religious), it just lends itself to the idea of a bunch of mischievous demon baddies.

I guess they look pretty serious  ๐Ÿ™‚

Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko)

Not particularly Sci Fi related but looks pretty cool.  This is an film that will be shown in July 2019 and is much anticipated.  It tells the story of guy who makes the journey to Tokyo from his home town to make a name for himself working for a mysterious occult magazine.  The weather is dreary and rainy and his tends to match his lifestyle and job.  Until he meets a girl who can change the weather by praying.

This will be shown in Japanese cinema in July and although other sites are saying that we may not get an English dub until 2020, I’m pretty sure we’ll see a subbed version in 2019.  The animation looks amazing!

Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (Danmachi) Season 2

It’s finally back. The season 1 series aired in 2015 and it was great – I loved the way that the production crew tried to turn a fan-service show into a charming story.  Lol, they didn’t succeed – but it wasn’t a bad effort.  At least when we watch this we shouldn’t be bombarded with boob and panty-shots in every scene although the squeaky doe eyed heroins may still be around.

Our hero is definitely back, Bell Cranel meets up with the goddess Hestia to undertake a quest in the city catacombs.  See what you think, I’ll definitely be checking it out.

Cop Craft

OMG I’m soooo looking forward to this.  It initially reminds me of that old show Alien Nation.  The word ‘Craft’ is possibly meant to get us to imagine a Warcraft world/scenario where humans and elves and monsters interact with their own ways of doing things with their own versions of right and wrong.

The Ones Within - (Naka no Hito Genome) - Review - Episode 1

The basic premise (from what I’ve been able to read on the internet) is that a portal has opened in the Pacific to another world of monsters and elves etc. The place is called Reto Samaani. Creatures are rushing through and many settle in a city called San Teresa where an immigrant and local cop get together to fight what has now become a peculiar kind of crime wave.

What makes this story really interesting is that both sides of the portal have their own ideas about right and wrong and therefore justice.  The crime fighting duo will therefore face lots of unusual situations that they will both have to deal with differently.

Graphics look good, sound looks good and the story certainly seems interesting!  Definitely one to check out!  (This preview video has subs!)

Astra Lost in Space (Kanata no Astra)

Not sure why I’m not looking forward to this as much as everyone else.  It’s certainly more anticipated by anime fandom.  Perhaps it just seems like a space drama to me and not very different or innovative.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

In the year 2061 a group of students undertake a trip in space which is not difficult or particularly hazardous (space travel is quite common). Unfortunately they are whisked away by a unforeseen alien/thingy 5000 light years away from their planet and have to marshal their limited resources and learn to pilot an old abandoned space ship, the Astra, to get back home.

I suspect this wont be anything like Red Dwarf. ๐Ÿ™‚

Maou-Sama, Retry!

One of my guilty anime pleasures is the series Overlord (not just because of the soundtrack).  This looks like it has a similar theme.  I’ve read that the manga for this is really cool but the animation in the clip doesn’t look particularly good.  I’m hoping that the series will be better.

The story is about a guy who leaves behind his adult working life to live in a video world as a very powerful demon lord.  Unfortunately, because of this, he is continually hounded by challenges to duels and fights.  You’ll see in the video preview that he has a partner.  I’m not sure what she does other than squeak.

A Certain Scientific Accelerator (Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator)

In a place called Academy City, the people are espers (people with extra sensory perception etc.).  Some people are really good (level 6) and some are not very good at all (level 0).  Our hero is a level 5 called Accelerator and he uses a lot of his power to protect his companion, Last Order a girl who possesses very strong abilities.  Unfortunately, an organisation called Disciplinary Action are after the pair to get them to undertake a disreputable mission.

Red Dwarf: S06E06: Out of Time

The animation in the preview video looks pretty good, music sounds great!  The voice acting of the main dude though is hammed up a bit.  It’s still worth checking out I think.

To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts (Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e)

This look really interesting in that the graphics and audio are great. The story too has an interesting premise. The story is set in a world where super-soldiers (called incarnates) are left to fend for themselves following the end of a war that they were created for. Unfortunately they are also susceptible to losing their souls and can become dangerous. As a result, special Beast Hunters hunt them down and destroy them. Some incarnates were killed for simply being incarnates…. One such person’s daughter is now out for revenge.

These incarnates were considered almost gods during the war, now they are considered as beasts. I’ll definitely be checking this one out and probably posting reviews of the episodes (as with many of those above).

The Ones Within (Naka no Hito Genome)

This looks really similar to Persona 5 from the video preview.  If it’s half as good at that production then it’ll be wonderful. I’m really looking forward to this one.

The story centres around a game player, Iride Akatsuki, who manages to unlock a special part of a really cool game with exclusive content –  he is seemingly transported to a real-life version of the game.

There he is joined by a number of fellow players each of which have been chosen because of their particular game genre skills (platforms, role playing etc.) and they need to solve puzzles and fight enemies as they try to clear levels and discover what the game is about and how to beat it.
