The “NX” prefix means it’s an experimental ship. The [i]Excelsior[/i], [i]Defiant[/i], and [i]Bradbury[/i] all carried NX registry numbers. The [i]Excelsior[/i]’s was changed to an NCC between [i]Star Trek II[/i] and [i]III[/i], presumably when the transwarp project was terminated. The “01” makes me wonder if this was the first starship [b]ever[/b].
I don’t mean to sound condescending to the devoted Trekkies here, but casual [i]Star Trek[/i] viewers may not already know the nomenclature.
