Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy: Science: Sirius Cybernetics Corp.

The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation is responsible for the development of the most popular range of domestic and industrial robots. The marketing division defines a robot as “Your plastic pal who’s fun to be with!”

The (late) Robotics Correspondent of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy defines The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as;
“a bunch of mindless jerks who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes”.

A bit harsh that you may think!  However, when you meet a robot produced by these geezers, you would understand the sentiment. Each robot you see has been programmed with a ‘personality’ not just any personality, but a really HOOPY   Genuine People Personality – GPP.   Like Marvin for instance, the Manically Depressed Robot! (although his personality is a prototype) This depressing hunk of machinery is NEVER manic, just depressed. The doors on the spaceship are programmed with infuriatingly  happy and helpful voices who’s greatest pleasure is to open and close for you – AND tell you so, incessantly!

Perhaps the most infuriating of all the machines we see, is the ships computer, Eddie. Eddie is one of those characters that we all just love to hate. Super positive and friendly, you can be as rude as you like and this machine will simply presume it was a complement. It is worse than an Amway distributor! In the face of adversity, Eddie is un-ruffled and pleasant and is ultimately unhelpful, preferring to say ‘nice things’ rather than provide concise information and speedy responses. You can’t help feeling that the best thing you could say to the computer was, ‘self destruct’.
