Red Dwarf: Cultures: Skutters

Skutters are the Red Dwarf maintenance robots. They look like hover-mowers with long necks and a beak!   They have some intelligence and it seems that they also have feelings.   Despite being higher ranking than Rimmer, they were often seen carrying out menial tasks on his behalf.  They were also received numerous negative comments from the loathsome Rimmer and once complained to Lister that they should not be left alone with him.

A baby boy and girl SkutterAt Macintyre’s funeral in the first Red Dwarf episode, you can just make out a Skutter dancing to the song, “see you later Alligator.”

In the episode “Balance of Power” We see that the Skutters are keen John Wayne fans.  They can often be seen cleaning the cinema and watching old movies at the same time (they even have film magazines and pictures of John Wayne in their lockers)

Skutters CAN reproduce.  In the episode Parallel Universe in Season II, we saw that a dark (presumably male) Skutter was chased by a pink (presumably female) Skutter from an alternate dimension. The resulting interface produced lots of little dark and pink Skutters.

Female Red Dwarf fans are particularly impressed with Skutters for some reason, (?) they can often be heard saying ‘aaahhhh’ when one is present in a scene.
