Tripping the Rift: Cultures: The Confederacy
The Confederacy is boring. It’s so boring that it wasn’t even mentioned in the pilot, TTR teaser, or even any of the previews. But without the Confederacy, there would be no smuggling ship Jupiter 42. The Confederacy is an oppressive government comprised of a bunch of liked minded worlds. These member worlds just want to live in peace, so they created a government to enforce all of their crappy rules. In real life, those who seek this kind of brutal rule live in a Condominium.
The Confederacy’s policy for strict order is reflective in its citizens, whom are all raised alike. From childhood on they are taught to obey, to do what they are told to do, when to do it, what to wear etc. So it’s kinda like parochial school. (I’m gonna get some nasty emails for that comment) The citizenry is of course also told what not to do and what they cannot own. Nothing motivates someone to buy something more then by telling them they aren’t allowed to have it, and so smuggling became a prime source of income in the Confederacy. Smugglers, like the unvaliant crew of Jupiter 42, travel between the worlds selling off their warez, profolactics, slaves, trans-digital freon converters, and whatever else anyone could want, or is not allowed to have.
This out of control condo government seeks to expand its borders and boring rule. It’s not bad enough that they restrict their inhabitants, but they also want to limit the freedoms of the “apartment across the street”. In this case the “apartment across the street” is the Dark Clown Empire. That region of space is controlled by the capitalistic Dark Clowns, who believe in absolute free enterprise, so long as they see a piece of the profit. Similarly they want to expand their economic empire. The result is a cold war between the two empires. They’re similarly tyrannical rulers as far as their citizens are concerned, but for the two superpowers, it’s all about principal!
