Furturama Introduction
This Guide is dedicated to the finest animated Science Fiction show to ever air on FOX, Futurama. It’s a show about Fry, a 20th century delivery boy who accidentally freezes himself for 1000 years. He wakes up to discover a new earth filled with strange aliens, loopy technology, and the same dead end job as a delivery boy.
Fry delivers cargo for Planet Express, working with him are a crew of rejects that would’ve made Captain Kirk cringe. But for the rest of us, its great Sci Fi satire.
Futurama was written by Matt Groening (pronounced grayning) who did the same for The Simpsons a few years earlier. The series was picked up by Fox and later, David Cohen helped Groening develop the stories which rapidly became popular in the sci fi community because of the wacky science and their ‘heart’. What was very refreshing was that it was always original, never a ‘Simpsons in Space’.
The show aired between 1999 and 2003 on the Fox network but was canned (rather surprisingly) and re-runs aired on the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim until 2006. It was later revived for a short time between 2007 and 2009 when 4 films were turned into 16 episodes (which constitutes a fifth season). Comedy Central then agreed to fund a further 26 half-hour episodes which were shown from 2010. The final season was shown from 2012 to 2013.
I don’t know anyone that doesn’t like Futurama, it seems to please everyone to a greater or lesser degree. This guide has reviews of many of the shows (especially the early ones) and characters and even cultures encountered in the series.
