I can recommend Akira and Appleseed (2004 remake) as excellent examples of animated SF. As for live action, I heartily agree with Sadgeezers recommendation of Firefly, love the series. From the archives of classic SF my favourites would be Forbidden Planet and This Island Earth both are excellent viewing.

On the topic of new films, and apologies for being "off thread" with a non SF tip, check out the following clip from the forthcoming Conan movie, if you’ve a taste for such things.

I’m a big fan of Robert E Howard and thought the original film was without doubt Arnies finest hour, surpassing even the original Terminator (ooh, an SF link!). This made me laugh proper good, by Crom!

Thanks Londondyke, just watching the whole of Babylon 5 (warts and all), will have to do a retrospective when finished.

Phil Dick is certainly a common thread here, without doubt one of my favourite authors as well. Unfortunately the filming of his work is somewhat hit and miss, Bladerunner good, Minority Report bad, I think the best of the rest might be A Scanner Darkly, whilst not heavily SF themed it is very typical of PKDs work.

As regards the rest, I have been to one convention the Babylon 5 Alliance Gathering in Blackpool, I had an absolute riot. I do read quite a bit of SF, it comes in so many different kinds of flavours that I can read what are seemingly disparate but are still SF. My fave author at the moment is Peter F Hamilton, a UK writer and the current master of the technical space opera. Other authors I like include Norman Spinrad, John Sladek (author of TikTok, the funniest SF novel since Bill The Galactic Hero) and Eric Frank Russell, another top SF humorist.

Brion James was a superb actor, I loved him in Blade Runner. He also had more bit parts (A Team, Diagnosis Murder, Columbo etc) than you could shake a stick at. He was good friends with Tim Thomerson (Trancers, Zone Troopers etc) and the two of them provided a really strong second string of actors though Hollywood tended to ignore them in favour of first string actors regardless. Check out "Nemesis" (with Olivier Gruner, NB not the Star Trek movie) as a good example of their work.

Pertwee was indeed the 3rd (and my favourite) Doctor. In the film Carry On Screaming he had a bit part as a police "scientist" and hence the "regeneration" scene. Carry on Screaming was a later Carry On film starring Kenneth Williams, Jim Dale, Fenella Fielding and Harry H Corbett (Steptoe and Son). The film was a take off of late 60’s horror movies (Hammer House of Horror, Roger Corman etc…).

I loved the scene where Leeloo was recreated from a fragment of Monagewan DNA, it reminded me of Carry On Screaming where John Pertwee recreates a new version of Oddbod from his missing finger! Except the FX were better!

Sadly missed, Elizabeth was an excellent companion for the Dr and I particularly enjoyed stories like Genesis of the Daleks where she played opposite the Dr and Harry Sullivan.
