Firefly: People: Book

Book is the ships moral guidance.  He’s older and supposedly wiser than the rest of the crew.  It’s not yet known if his mission on Serenity is to use the ship to help spread the word of God throughout the universe or if he’s just on a walkabout?

Unfortunately it seems that he’s the worst of both, a moral dude who also needs to find himself!  As yet, he has an irritating personality and far too many ‘put the gun down son‘ lines.

I’m tempted to say that if you met Book in the pub he’d be just as drunk as you were. Sure he’d be extolling the virtues of …. virtue, but he’d be doing it while throwing up on the fat lady on the next table. Her husband, a small weedy guy would get up and hit Book hard on the chin. Book would then fall on the floor unconscious. You have the sneaking suspicion that Book doesn’t suffer from hangovers.

He is a Shepherd from the South Down Abbey, and when he was first introduced to Kaylee, he told her: “I’ve been out of the world for a spell.  I’d like to walk it awhile. Maybe bring the word to them that needs it told.

Perhaps his biggest ally on the Serenity is the lovely Inara. The two of them seem to share a moral bond and he’s more than once had a confidential chat with her.

Book is played by the magnificent Ron Glass

Ron is an established TV actor who has portrayed some great characters sitcoms for many years. My personal favourite was Detective Ron Harris in “Barney Miller” (1975-82).

He was born in Indiana before eventually moving to Hollywood. His first TV work was in an episode of “Sanford and Son” in 1972 but he has also appeared in the “Twilight Zone”, where he was the mathematics genius who created a demon. Ron directed the Sci Fi video film feature “Deep Space” (1988).
