Ah fallout 2. I remember a long time ago my bro was playing that getting killed by radioactive stuff (well green stuff anyway) underground. It’s not multiplayer though is it?

Starlancer and the up and coming freelancer games are made by the people who did the wing commander games.

Anyways – Master of Orion 3 is about to come out and it seems to be pretty good, if a tad annoying to those of you with expensive graphics cards. Unreal 2 seems pretty sweet as well. Was going to get medevil total war and IL-2 sturmwich, but with sequels planned (just around the corner for IL-2, and a yr or so for Rome:total war, I think I’ll start saving- you never know pc games get more and more expensive despite using smaller DVD style boxes and relegating the tome thick instuction manuals to pdf format on the cd for you to print out)

I still challenge you all to yahoo bridge though

Get a dedicated multi-region player

Not a PS2:
1) here in the uk, unless u get them chipped which costs a bit, region 2 only
2) PS2 isn’t as good as a dedicated player

If u r in the uk, I’d say get a multi-region player from: http://www.multimod.co.uk – they chip the machines the best, and get round region coding enhancements

I’d go with the sony DVP-NS405 (£127 not including vat alredy chipped).

If you want a website for dvd comparisons by region (mainly region 1,2,4), go to http://www.bytesandbobs.com/dvdcompare/default.asp

As to your questions:
1) PAL= uk/european standard for transmission to your tvs. NTSC= american. Most TVs sold in the uk will do both now. If your tv has a scart socet, chances are it will be able to take the NTSC input required for region 1 discs. Multi-region- the world is split into several ‘regions’ eg USA/Canada= region 1, europe and japan= region 2. Helps in distributin (supposedly), allows separate release dates (eg pich black was on region 1 dvd at the same time that it was in uk cinemas). Basically region coding is a major pain in the backside for anyone apart from those living in region 1 places (americans get the best discs whilst we get the feature removed for multilingual subtitles and audio)- I’d rather have the documentaries please.
2) See recommendation for a player above
3)avoid the video/dvd combos- u can’t record dvd to video anyway because of protection, and for the same price of a combo, you can get a dedicated dvd player and a dedicated video, both performing better than the combo. Combo is only any good if u want to save space, but it’s a compromise

won’t happen- It’s already been filmed so it’ll be released (even if it’s crap- you know movie studios are always out to make money- it’ll be released)

Read ur stuff in the farscape board grape, but isn’t what ur suggesting a tad pessimistic?

good place to ask about recommendations is http://www.sffworld.org/forums – if a mod thinks the link is inappropriate for whatever reason feel free to edit the post(i just put if here because u don’t have a reading forum on this site and i read for longer than i watch tv)

Have a try of some of the following if you’ve already read lord of the rings- you may hate these- make up your own mind on reading them- I prefer books with characterisation over hard physics (well depends on how it’s presented). There’s hundreds of books out there and I’m not even going to pretend this is a definitive list- my bookshelf has a few hundred books on it:

Ender’s Game (OS Card)- was one of my top science fiction novels before stars my destination (see below)
Gateway- Frederik Pohl
Forever War- Joe Haldeman
The Stars My Destination- Alfred Bester (if you liked this one, try The Demolished Man by the same author- rewrote the thinking on telepaths, and some of you may spot the in joke with the author in B5)
Quite a lot of the books and short stories by Philip K. Dick
A song of ice and fire – G.R.R. Martin
Tigana – Guy Gavriel Kay
Earhsea Quartet- Ursula Le Guin
Dune- Frank Herbert
The Book of the New Sun (Gene Wolfe)
Lord of Light- Roger Zelazny
A lot of Gemmell is good- I personally like lion of macedon best, but each to his/her own
Little, Big- John Crowley

Getting a bit more technical:

A lot of Ian M. Banks- start with player of games, since some of his stuff is difficult to get into straight away
William Gibson- Neuromancer
Books by Greg Bear, Asimov, David Brin, Ben Bova, Dan Simmons

Comics/graphic novels-
Depends what you’re into, but top one I’d recommend even to non-comic fan is watchmen- one of the best stories in a comic period- never found anyone reading comics who found it crap

Have to admit to liking both to be honest

I preferred B5 in the 1st 3 seasons- political dealings, shadow war, earth conspiracy, religious undertones drawn from buddism and vedic philosophies etc but the last 2 were just plain pants apart from a few select episodes.

DS9 really found it’s feet in its later seasons- eg chosty dominion war subplots, sisko got devious, the move away from the humanocentric orientated message that makes trek so predictable, the fact there was no reset switch at the end of each episode, better bajoran subplots, better characterisation and Worf!. Alright it had an annoying tendency to build up expectation for a battle, only to have it resolved off screen.
