ParticipantI’m not quit sure why but Serenity didn’t really do it for me. I guess I’d prefer to be watching firefly, and allowing the story to take its time (over say a series or so) rather than the cramming of everything that you can into an hour and a half.
Too short – apparently the 1st draft of the script was 190 mins long – I want that version dagnabbit

ParticipantThe point where season 4 was originally meant to end (before all that stuff about cancellation forcing JMS to wrap up his storylines a season early) is currently at the end of episode 18 of S4. The extra stuff in ‘In the Beginning’ was going to be in S4 before it was removed to allow time for endgame and sleeping in the light -examples can be found in the episode where:
**Spoilers***
You find Delenn cast the deciding vote to allow the war
So I guess ‘In the beginning’ fits between episodes 18 and 19 of S4.
it does not exactly fit the ongoing story: during the episode before (“Rising Star”), Londo Mollari is just
being considered for the title of Emperor, he is NOT Emperor yet!
You know he’ll get there in S3 – the Bab 4 episode and when Londo asks for the seeress who tells him both Vir and he will be emperor. Theres no need to force S5 on someone before in the beginningfluffy bunny
ParticipantSounds like a plan, but given the nature of the test I’m not sure if they’ll miss their knees.
Just taking out their televisions should be enough 😛

So much for me thinking the Beeb were employing serious acting talent given the budget they’re pouring into the project.

ParticipantScience fiction tv/film?
No particular order:
Vader (mainly from Empire though)Scorpius- I’ll admit I didn’t see much of Farscape seasons 3 and 4, but what I saw of Scorpius in season 2 had plenty of menace about him
Bester- the guy you love to hate
Davros- I only saw Genesis of the Daleks in the late 80s/early 90s, but he’s left a lasting impression
I can’t think of a no 5 off the top of my head, though Faith in the third season of Buffy probably comes close. Anyway…
Honourable mentions: The Terminator, Kahn, Gul Dukat

ParticipantHere was the eventual reply on the other forum:
The economics of television do not favor this model. Yes, selling a couple of hundred thousand copies of each B5 set makes the show a profitable item for Warner Bros., but the B5 episodes themselves were paid for long ago. The DVD sets only cost the couple of million that digitizing, authoring and mastering plus extras require. If WB had to pay almost 22 million additional dollars to produce the 22 episodes for each season, they’d be losing their collective shirt on the DVD sets. And B5 probably had the lowest cost per episode of any of the shows you’ve mentioned. Trying to produce an expensive SF series for DVD, with no broadcast revenue, no overseas sales, and no future residuals to off-set present costs is a good way to go broke in a hurry.
quote:
——————————————————————————–
If they make it, we will buy.
——————————————————————————–Not in sufficient numbers to interest anyone in Hollywood – and that includes the actors whose contracts are based on broadcast residuals and who only make a tiny amount on home video releases. (This stuff is built into the SAG basic minimum agreement.) Then there’s the whole industry perception that “direct to video” is the lowest of the low, basically an admission of failure, a statement that you can’t cut it in the real world of TV and movies, and you’ve got a serious problem selling this to the actors and the writers, directors and everybody everybody else behind the camera. Direct-to-video has worked for sequels to Disney movies produced on the cheap and for porn – neither of which bears much similarity to SF television (Well, except maybe to Lexx. )

Participantgoing to start writing synopses, but I’m a bit tied up at the mo.
Following site should do for now:

ParticipantInteresting premise copied and pasted from another site (though I think this is a similar premise the comic direct sale market took and the industry’s not in the best shape these days, especially with regards to attracting new people to the medium):
Want great SF for thinking adults which truly fulfills the writer’s
original vision without network wonk interference, even if it means
sacrificing some of the more expensive special effects? Why not bypass
TV and go direct to DVD! It seems to this humble viewer that it would
be very similar to producing a show for syndication. After purchasing
Firefly, my anger and frustration with the state of science fiction on
TV was rekindled. Firefly, Odyssey 5, Jeremiah, Crusade; the list goes
on. Even Andromeda, which was never more than an entertaining
diversion, has now been rendered unwatchable.Science fiction fans represent a smaller demographic, but we buy LOTS
of DVDs, as the sales of Babylon 5 and Buffy demonstrate. And those
are shows we’ve already seen. Imagine the preorders on Amazon.com if
Joss Whedon produced new episodes of Firefly without having to fight
to keep his characters true, or JMS was able to continue with Jeremiah
as it was intended, or Legend of the Rangers, or Crusade! I mention
those writers since they’ve already had successful DVD sales, but what
about Neil Gaiman, or John Ringo, or [your favorite author here]?They could start small, produce 4 episodes and throw it out there to
see if we bite. And when we show them it will work, they can invest in
more expensive special effects, or produce an entire *season* before
releasing it. If they make it, we will buy.FSFFTVT! (Free SF From TV Tyrants)
ParticipantObi- Wan’s death wasn’t that good IMHO. If you need a death, the Admiral Vader chokes using the force in Empire was good.
Spock’s death in Wrath of Kahn did stike a chord when I was younger. One of the deaths that caught me by surprise was Kyle Reese in terminator- after all the good guys always survive right? (or that’s what I thought at the age I saw the movie)
On the B5 front, Sheridan’s death had everyone holding their breath for a year or so- wasn’t the death itself I guess, but the events unfolding at the same time to the audience.

ParticipantStraczynski’s done a lot of comic work (including a stint on the main spiderman title)- not all of it good though.

Lol- I can’t even remember what I wrote. Ah well, another post lost to Saddy’s hangover 😀
Oh I remember bits of it- hope the announcement’s delayed for another year if they’ve only just started the writing phase- there was a year gap between The Gathering and S1, and as a result the show just became stronger- beyond the level of ‘adequate’ to very good, leading to awesome in S2 and 3.
16th December 2003 at 11:49 am in reply to: *SPOILERS * What should have happened to Ivanova? #69410fluffy bunny
Participant
I was very fond of Talia
Ah rebirth ceremony
Anyway, who said Ivonova turned lesbian- it could just have been interpreted as sisterly love, which is pretty much how the interaction was played.I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. For my brother and myself, most of the Talia orientated episodes were the boring ones (there were a few Jewels, but still…)
It would have been good if dark talia had come back and added to the plot in seasons 3 & 4 (you could argue about the Jerry Doyle thing, but I still feel that the plot could have benefitted significantly). The ‘masterstroke’ just wasn’t capitalised on IMHO. She could have become as evil as Bester, but whereas Bester had the charisma, Talia could have had the pured hatred and would have contrasted strongly with the naive (sp?) well mannered Talia from the earlier seasons.
As for warren, according to the commentary, the only reason that JMS had him in was that the WB execs wanted a hotshot elite pilot character (fortunately he got minimum screen time). Then they released their hold in S2, and the show went from strength to strength.
Agree about Morden and Sinclair going at the right time.
fluffy bunny
Participant
I’m afraid if I were Ivanova, I’d commit Hara-Kiri!
Or run off with Bester. Now that would have been a storyline to remember 😛
On an aside;
One of the things I liked about season 2 was that it managed to do what many other shows managed to do- kill off/get rid of the whiney characters that you got sick of- Talia, Warren, even Sinclair to a lesser extent, paving the way for an excellent S3. Season 4 however by the end did the opposite Ivonova, Marcus, Morden 😯 Guess I’m lucky he didn’t kill off G’Kar and Londo15th December 2003 at 11:47 pm in reply to: *SPOILERS * What should have happened to Ivanova? #69395fluffy bunny
Participanterm you may want to post a spolier warning there. Not everyone’s seen season 4 (especially since it’s not even out on US DVD yet- a lot people I know didn’t catch the series the 1st time around).
Anyway…
there was that contract thing…
But as to should Ivonova should have died? Probably, but it should have been worked into the script from the start, and dying in a more meaningful way (or a less meaningful way to show the futility of war, or something along those lines). One thing that should not have happened is Marcus biting the bullet 😡 (but considering season 5 wouldn’t have any use for him, maybe it was for the best).
I do remember reading an article in SFX somewhere that she was meant to be the one to fall for Byron etc. Will see if I can dig it out over the weekend

ParticipantWelcome aboard.
Answering your call- though technically I’ve not done any roleplaying for 8 or 9 yrs now due to other commitments.
Besides, pen and paper RPGs went downhill since the demise of TSR. Wizards of the Coast took over some of the good ones- AD&D, Call of Cthulu and the star wars RPGs and proceeded to rubbish em up using their crappy D20 system. Warhammer RPG fortunately seems untouched as are the white wolf stuff (vampire, werewolf, mage, wraith)- very plot orientated. Dunno if Birthright’s still around, but that was good, and not quite hack and slash here there and everywhere. GURPS seems to have encompassed a lot of the other RPGS- conspiracy X, traveller, the white wolf stuff. (take my words with a pich of salt since I’m out of date at the mo)
Computer RPGs are alright, but lack the cameraderie around the table which is part of the appeal. Add to that the number of lazily designed RPGs out there- kill monster get leveled up and equipped with better weapons, kill bigger monsters etc.

Haven’t read your paragraph FatGuy so I don’t know if it should have been censored or not, but based on what’s been said, would it have passed the following submission guidelines?
To clear up confusion, it may be neccessary to have some guidelines as to what the site accepts and doesn’t accept, or we’ll get into arguement after arguement.

(and bearing in mind that is an adult board, and those who are easily offended should stay away)
erm.. sorry to sound ignorant, but where exactly does it state that ? 😳 😳 😳 In my experience, there are plenty of adults out there that are totally childish in their behaviour whilst under an assumed name. On the other hand, there are plenty of ‘mature’ young people in ‘cyberspace.’
fluffy bunny
ParticipantI’m fine leaving it pretty much at the discretion of the moderators. Obviously there are somethings I’d like to see censored. There are reasons (other than propoganda) that censorship came into being
Different rules apply to other forums. There are some that ban discussion on religion and politics as they’re the main topics likely to cause ‘unrest’ amonst members. Others allow such discussions to varying degrees of success (dependant on moderators and the normal lurkers around the forum in question).
Most have a button that comes under each of the posts saying something akin to ‘report this post to a moderator’ – what this does opens a message box asking you to put across why you’re reporting the post. Then it sends a copy of the post and your comment to all the moderators (not all mods inhabit the boards 24/7), and someone at least looks up the post, removes it/leaves it/gives caution about what lines of discussion that the post brings about that aren’t allowed to be followed etc. Again- depends on the forum in question, but generally it works.
Freedom of speech has its place, but that doesn’t mean you have to allow ANYTHING to go unnoticed. There are places on the net catering to special interests, and people are ‘free’ to go to these places and discuss such issues with like-minded people without antagonising people who just visit this particular forum to put their feet up and discuss their favourie television shows.
________________________________________For interest here’s an exerpt from onipress’ boards (comic publishing company)- obviously the 2 paragraphs of the exerpt before the one at the end won’t apply to this board, I’m sticking them down since they did bring a grin to my face when I read them
First and foremost, we ask that you in some way post under you true identity. This means if you choose to use a screen name, then you should use your real e-mail address. If you’d prefer to keep your e-mail private, then we ask that you post under your real name. While we won’t police this rule heavily, it will be invoked harshly when someone is posting inflammatory remarks. We dislike cowards. We don’t like people who can’t stand behind their opinions. Posting nasty messages anonymously will cause your messages to be deleted and you to be banned from the message board.
The logical extension of the above is that we won’t tolerate one person to harshly attack others, or anyone to purposely create a negative atmosphere on this board. That includes personal attacks on other visitors, creators, or Oni staff. (We all like to make extreme jokes at times, yes, but we are all friends here and know when someone is being a jerk.) We won’t tolerate any racist comments, extreme politics, or general nastiness. There are other places for that.
That doesn’t mean we don’t allow dissent or contrary opinions. But please focus on constructive criticism and not out-and-out insults. And keep in mind where you are. If you came here to just diss an Oni book or one of Oni’s creators, don’t be surprised if many disagree with you-strongly. You stepped into a fan area, and fans tend to like to talk about what they enjoy more than what they don’t. Again, feel free to state your opinion, just don’t be surprised when others express theirs in response, okay? We would like the focus of our board to be, first and foremost, on comics. Second, we would like it to be about pop culture. If you want to get all serious, then go someplace all serious. This is not the community for you.
And while most pop culture is fair game, we have one area that is off limits. WE HATE STAR WARS. YOU CANNOT TALK ABOUT STAR WARS ON THE ONI PRESS MESSAGE BOARD. Seriously. We would like to create one place on this planet where that stupid movie series is not discussed. You mention those films or any of those characters, we will either edit your message or delete it completely. We are not kidding. Frequent disregard for this rule could lead to temporary banishment.
You can talk about Star Trek, but you walk a thin line. And the Oni staff reserves the right to ridicule you.
Finally, we ask that you have fun.

Participantcult sci-fi in general? Hmmn I think most people would get a good dose of that if they went channel surfing to be honest- more so than a load of text links on a site.
Surely shows such as star trek, doctor who, monkey, twin peaks, sapphire and steel, the quartermass series, dark angel, and stargate sg1 (shuddder) should also be somewhere
But I see your point about the disadvantages of compartmentalising everything. Then again people won’t click on links they don’t really want to read from the front page (for example if I’m truly honest, I don’t think I’ve been in the Lexx section since I’ve been here, purely because the episodes of the show I’ve seen haven’t really appealed to me- if i remember right, found the B5 section on a search engine a few yrs ago. Then remembered the name whilst typing things into the address bar last yr). I don’t see the problem when Lexx news comes up though.
Anyway, the geezer was only talking about a few themes- maybee with extra links/graphics built in to give the user some choice as to what the site looks like. It’s still all there, just in a different order (maybee by giving priority 1 to all stories for that theme- eg red dwarf= all red dwarf stories to the top, whilst everything else is priority 2 in order)
fluffy bunny
ParticipantJust a comment- is there a way for registered users to have an options page (or the eqivalent) with the boxes on the sides- eg competition, main menu, calendar etc listed with a checkbox next to them.
Only those checked (plus any new ones that may be added as the site progresses) will load up. The rest won’t. I know u can click the little + next to each but it may be an idea to get rid of those u don’t need- eg calendar etc. It’s already been said different people want different things, but to gove each person more of a choice as to what loads up, you may get the best of both worlds- everyone choses what they want and don’t want to load up).
Anyway keep up the good work.

Participantwasn’t like that a few hundred yrs ago. Sanitation, immunisation, advances in health etc have all played a role. Hardly any women die in childbirth, infective causes of death in the 1st world have dropped considerably. Not many people die in childhood, or middle age. Farming advances for food etc

Not just Bush though, it’s the contempt radiating out of the rest of his cabinet that worries a few. Double standards, surely not?

He may believe this, he may not. I wouldn’t say he was that religious anyway. Modern medicine’s already tinkered the human lifespan above normal- most creatures of the animal kingdom die by the time the female of the species reaches the menopause.Oh there was a good program on this before. Discussed things like- if we did reach immortality, the person who’d create it would problably charge a ton of money for it. It’d come down to those who could afford it, and those who couldn’t. Widening of the rich poor divide etc.

Seems a bit long winded and drawn out now that ‘the event’ has happened. Season 1 kept it tense til the end, but there seems to be a tad too much padding at the end of season 2. Fingers crossed it’ll get better by the endfluffy bunny
ParticipantI really don’t see what people have against harry potter. Ok they may not be all that challenging compared to a lot of other literature, but they are fun and imaginative in a candyflossy type of way. Not every film I watch is pushing the boundaries of intellectualism, and neither is every book. HP is harmless fun. Ok maybe not for everyone, but still fun nonetheless. Book 5’s not really a must read for me- can wait for the paperback whilst I get through a lot of other books (books 1-4 were good, but not really memorable to me personally), but chances are I will get around to reading it.
Oh, and don’t start with HP being a rip off on star wars- I could go on for ages as to what star wars ripped off (eg basic plot from hidden fortress 20 yrs earlier as acknowledged by lucas himself on the dvd).
May I make a general observation; it’s mainly people who see it as childish and not worth reading who snub the book and a lot of books/films in the same genre.
Re: the geezer’s comment about the no. of stories- true as long as you don’t take into account the international community- mixing of cultures, books and films reveals new stories to those of us growing up on one set of myths and legends.

As the number of shows increase, you’ll find the number of crappy shows increase along with it. Bear with it.

ParticipantI can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet rideA whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we’re only dreamingA whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I’m way up here
It’s crystal clear
That now I’m in a whole new world with you
Now I’m in a whole new world with youUnbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond skyA whole new world
Don’t you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath – it gets better
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back to where I used to beA whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I’ll chase them anywhere
There’s time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with youA whole new world
That’s where we’ll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and mep
