I was working in Construction at the time, and the new high rise my crew was at in downtown Boston, as well as the rest of downtown was evacuated….it was a very sccary tense morning thinking Boston would be attacked as well as the horror of watching the WTC collapse on our office tv.
I was misty eyed today too.

I drove home that evening (I live in the city) and I was just numb…it took me a week before I could cry about it.
But it was a strange thing driving into the city seeing the high rises and thinking how fragile they seem now. From my apartment I can see the Boston skyline and it became a disturbing thing to look out the window for quite some time.

I’ll post it tonight. (at work now)

I’m totally nervous to do it.(creator’s curse of insecurity when it comes to baby”)

It’s easy to impress folks who aren’t scifi buffs, another thing all together to be at the mercy of real fans. However, I need criticism true to the genre, if I ever think anyone will read it.

I’ll post the beginning of the story…. and no preface it’ll just be it, in all it’s in-progress glory….

only side note due to a terrible French teacher in high school (when I started the thread of the story–15ish years ago)
The character named Mireille is pronounced Mir-e-il (not the correct fr. mir-ay) —I haven’t decided what to do about that yet….either change the spelling or do something else.
    Thanks for the encouragement!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I carried a towel in my school backpack for years after, probably until I was a sophmore/junior. I have to say, alot of times it came in quite handy! I grew up in an oceanside town, so go figure! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Benjy and Frankie!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ nice, an Adams version of Henson’s Waldorf & Statler right?(in a demented way I guess). That’s always a stumper question too: Name the guys in the balcony from The Muppet Show…

I was sitting in a pub in Dublin and that came up across the room.

    I love the Vulcan question.

How come no one mistook them for High Elves?

What were the mice’s names??? I can’t rememeber t the moment!

Whose Callahan what’d s/he write that’s like Adams?

I loved the series too! I’ll agree with that about the opening. The Vogons were great, and Trillium.

I haven’t even thought about HGTTG in ages, I should just go back and reread the whole thing!

Thanks that was a really great reply, good questions too!!!!

Long live Adams! Wen I read the first 3 books in 6th grade, I asked my teacher if I could use them for my book report. I wish I kept it!!!
We had to make a mobile.
So mine had the ships, the sun and the Resturant!!!!

Course then I didn’t get the Ford Prefect joke….being a kid in the States with no knowledge of Ford’s British make cars.

I want to read the Salmon of Doubt…..have you?

    Okies!

Are you a born/bred Texan, or was it some other unfortunate circumstance? ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ™‚

Ever been to Massachusetts? New England?

I like to travel as often as I can/afford.

i love travel/airplanes, if I had the money to be a space tourist, even if it cost me down to my last dollar, I’d go! ๐Ÿ™‚

Ummmm…..depression is not caused by addiction, usually the other way around.

Like the guy said to Neo, “Maybe you just need to unplug, man. Get a little R&R. What do ya think Du Jour? Should we take him with us?”……………………………………

It’s not better than another addiction….either accept you’re an addict- drugs, internet, sex etc… and go with it…..or do something about it!

as for theFrey …so sorry you find yourself in Texas… ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰
(never been to Dallas – I like Austin though)

Ok Maurice, Then I don’t get it. What is the purpose of your question/inquiry. Are you happy? Are you not happy? Are you worried your behaving oddly. Or you just need a breather, took one and then needed to check in to see if that was ok?

Don’t compare yourself to other people, and whatever about scaring women (hope you were joking)….
I’m a woman who scares men most of the time, because I’m blunt and up front about things most people find uncomfortable. ie, big ego…

If you have you’re groove on -fine.
Even a groove that’s going well can improve by a little improvisation (excuse the pun/heavy handed metaphor)

    You don’t read demented. ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Good Luck! -Suzanne

    Shadowedvenus, you are my hero!

Esp your point about the mysticism depicted, of course some one like Lynch can control I think the aesthicsm in his movie, obviously better than Scifi, resting on the previous work of the big names associated with their version, ie, William Hurt – I agree Lynch’s Leto was more dramatic, more accesible and the camera guy (don’t rememebr his name)
And the SciFi’s Paul was more like Mark Hamil in Star Wars than what Kyle McLaughlin’s performance was.

Lynch’s vision in his movies is so unique so beautiful and grotesque at the same time. The emperor’s court and the bene gezerits style way better.
In the Scifi, I thought the head bene gezerit’s wig/hair was terribly done, and Muad’dib’s court costumes at the end of Scifi’s Dune were just cheaply thrown together.

Like you pointed out – what we’ve come to expect from US TV.

Yikes, You need to disconnect a bit sounds like it. Virtual relations between humans is not the answer for the future. There is a beautiful world out there filled with trees and wildlife and people!
Take a white water rafting trip, go sky diving!!!!
Physicality has it’s own adreneline rushes and rewards.
Hell, go sit at a bar and have a few drinks and chat with the regulars.
It’s fun!!!!! I do most of my posting between other things at work because I’m a receptionist and get time to burn occasionally. And after my first Dragon*Con I wanted to keep in touch with scifi fandom because it helped deal with withdrawal from Dragon*Con.

I’ve lived in Boston almost 3 years. When I first moved here I didn’t know many folks in the city. So I went to neighborhhood pubs and talked to people. I’ve met some great folks, created one great friendship, still see my old friends north of the city, and go out to socialize.
And I always get the comeback about this , “But you’re a woman, it’s easier for women.”
If you open yourself to certain experiences, I’ve found they generally happen. And it’s always good to mix it up!!!
“Variety is the spice of life” is not a cliche for nothing!

One thing that did bother me about the mini series is the pronounication of Harkonen. Har-kon-nen in Lynch’s vs. Hark-enen in Scifi’s. Drove me crazy, I like Lynch’s pron. better. And I love the Lynchness of the movie and the actors.

The dirty dripping Harkonens in Lynch were so much easier to despise.

I haven’t read the books, so this is purely a visual interpretation.
And I think I froze the frame of Lynch’s (Sting) Fey’d stepping out of his spice shower ten thousand times in high school.!!!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I WANT to read the books, but the library didn’t have the first one in! So I’m biding my time…..

My friend and I used to read Slaves of Gor outloud to each other and laugh! It was like the Story of O just pulp scifi!!!! couldn’t help but love it for the sheer schlock value!!! Like Samuel Delaney without any of the philsophical discourse at worse case scenario.

The Top Ten List is like a history of the tv shows I grew up with!!!

Nice to see some shows that even forget about alot!

That was back in high school. Any one else read that????

    2. Gundam Wing
    3. Star Trek (original series-though Picard’s a heartthrob)
    4. Star Blazers
    5. Voyager -early seasons esp. Q, Janeway’s a pain
    6. Robotech, the first year
    7. Capt. Harlock & The Queen of A Thousand Years
    8. Babylon 5
    9. Battlestar Galactica
    10. G Force- one of the best bad guys!!!

Ok, i didn’t read all of these comments so ignore me if I’m repeating anything.

    Why ask this question?
Do you want to re-focus the website?
Or is it a lack of cult like enthusiasm for anything new or lack of anything new worthy of cult following.

I think we each have our own intrepretations of the generally accepted definitions of scifi; hard, soft, space opera, cyber punk, et all.

Scifi has the unique opportunity of provoking insight into how to change the present to create a future we’re more comfortable in, it’s self reflection with an emphais on the future that seperates it from other art forms. And of course it’s entertaining to be challenged by visions of the future no matter how fact-based or fantasy-based it is. Which is why it attracks cult like followings- because people who want to stretch themselves and our reality are the most intrigued by these notions.

“Reasonable people adapt themselves to the world. Unreasonable people attempt to adapt the world to themselves. All progress, therefore, depends on unreasonable people.” -George Bernard Shaw

Ultimately I agree with FatBoy’s inital comment,

SadGeezer- what do YOU want here?

If it’s more discussions like this I’m game! As a Farscape fan,(wormholes, wormholes!) who attended panels on what to do to bring it back at Dragon*Con, like what folks have done for Robotech- to use an example- I hope Cult TV SciFi is alive and well and works!!!!

    Goodluck!

Thanks, yes I’ll definitely read some of the other stuff here first. But I’d love some feedback on a story I have a deadline for with my writing group. Problem is they aren’t scifi fans, so they don’t get some things that are just part of the gnere.

    Thanks alot again, good luck.
