Well, after seeing the game, I’m a little embarrassed. One of the two points that Portugal made was done by a USA player by mistake! It was so stupid!
In the news, they did manage to mention the game. Briefly. It should have been on the front page of all the newspapers, but it wasn’t.

ParticipantAlthough Kai has finally died and Xev has permanently lost the one she loved the most, there are other possibilities. I think Nigel Bennet would make a perfect replacement for Michael McManus. Xev loved Kai, but he could never return that feeling. I think it would be really fun if Prince were to take a love interest in Xev. It would be a sort of reversal of the situation with Xev and Kai. Prince would love Xev (don’t ask me why, maybe because she’s not entirely human) but Xev would certainly never return any love! And when you think about it, Kai was dead but Prince is death itself. Or maybe forget about the whole death thing altogether. I don’t know.

ParticipantGo, go, go, USA! They beat Portugal 3-2!
Although I fell asleep and didn’t see it live, I’ll be watching it when they rebroadcast it this afternoon! So don’t tell me any details! LOL!

ParticipantWith all due respect, getting a new actor to play Kai just wouldn’t work.
Flamegrape
ParticipantKai’s story ended well. At least it wasn’t sudden. We had been expecting something like this for a while.
There is also the reality factor. MM is getting older but his character, Kai, doesn’t age. Sure, you could bring him back to life and he would age normally… but he just wouldn’t be Kai. It would be the same as adding a new character to the show that the fans demand and not one dreamed up by the writers. Expectation would be set that wouldn’t be met. It just wouldn’t make any sense.
Flamegrape
ParticipantBeautiful movie. Terrible plot and dialogue. I recomend turning off the volume on the TV and putting in your favorite music in the CD player.

Oh, I’d believe it. There is a talk-radio station nearby that starts talking about sports from 3pm until 11pm. And all they talk about, year round, is Vol (american) football. (The Volunteers is the college team that plays for the University of Tennessee.) Yes, even in bloody MARCH there are jackasses calling up the show asking about theoretical bowl games the Vols might play… and american football season doesn’t start until SEPTEMBER!
One thing to note about soccer on american television. They have been showing World Cup matches without commercial interruption! Completely amazing! Maybe not so suprising for ESPN, but they did it on ABC too! Or course they have commercials at hallf-time break, but that’s to be expected. But I think most of the matches are pre-recorded and I don’t know how long that break is in between the 45-minute rounds. Or whatever. (I need to read up on the rules of the game!)

I have seen many news stories here in the United States commenting about the apathy towards football here. According to all these news reports, football is, without a doubt, the most popular sport in the world. When you get down to it, it’s a simple game that anyone in the world can play. You don’t need expensive equipment, just a ball and two feet.
IMHO, the popularity american football is beginning to fade. This is debateable, of course, but the ratings for the Super Bowl (the so-called “world championship” of american football) has declined in recent years. And without a doubt, baseball has also declined in popularity.
“Soccer Mom” is a derogatory term used here in the USA. It describes an upwardly-mobile mother who typically drives a mini-van or sport-utility vehicle. The stereotype also implies that her kids belong to soccer teams and she’s the one who takes them and their teammates to practice and matches. You know what I mean, the busybody who bakes cookies for everyone in the office. LOL! (No offence to any soccer moms out there! I was just describing a derogatory term for our friends across the pond.) Anyway, IMHO, I think the mere existance of such a term implies that soccer is increasing in popularity in the USA. In a culture where hip-hop and raves are now popular, I think jocko-homo american football must be less appealing.
It’s also worth noting that soccer was lampooned on an episode of The Simpsons. The city of Springfield hosted the World Cup. The show acknowledged the fact that it’s the most popular sport in the world. But it was portrayed as dull and boring… and therefore started a riot! LOL
Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing the match between England and Sweden later this afternoon. Yes, I know it’s already over, don’t tell me who won. It’s the only match they are showing on television here during the afternoon.
I got a question. Where the heck did the word “soccer” come from? I suppose I already know the general answer, but I was just wondering what others knew about it’s origin.
Flamegrape
ParticipantWell, they are showing some of the World Cup games in the USA… in the wee hours of the morning! In the middle of the day, they’ve been showing one game on ABC. (Obviously pre-recorded because of the time difference.)

Yes, the dialogue is not that great. It reminds me of lines given in old silver-age comic books from the 1960s. Or maybe the predictible lines in an old serial. Or maybe something from a Kurasawa action film like The Hidden Fortress.

I know you like to post pictures with every other post you make, but consider posting images that are less than 320 pixels across. I’ve found that large pictures tend to throw off the formating of the forum page. (This particular point may become irrelevant when SadGeezer.Com undergoes it’s upgrade.)
I also recommend using pictures that you post on your own webpage space and not reference other people’s websites. The obvious reason is that such images may be deleted from any given website without your knowledge. But more importantly, it’s somewhat rude to add data traffic to someone else’s website when they are the ones who have to pay for it. Beware of “free” websites because sometimes they do not permit referencing of files from outside of their servers.
For example, bonnee’s pic is only 24k. But when it’s viewed a hundred times a day, that adds up to over 2 megabytes of data transfered from http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/ that some stranger has paid for. And since I replied to bonnee’s message with the picture in quotes, the amount of data that transfers has been doubled.

Come off it Flamegrape, the above statement pretty much sums up what you think of earlier Lexx compared to what it is now.
The insect wars were not dreamt up by fans, the fact that they were not played out in the series does not mean they didn’t happen.
As we’ve seen with Star Wars, prequels can be an interesting and integral part of the Lexx history, an area that has never truly been explored.
nononononononono…. I didn’t say “the Insect Wars were dreamed up by the fans”. I said, “the idea of an Insect Wars prequel was entirely dreamed up by fans”. Worlds of difference. And actually, that wasn’t entirely true anyway. Didn’t MM bring up the idea in an interview? (I hope I’m not starting a false rumor!)
About Star Wars. Since 1977 when the first movie came, it was designed to have prequels. It wasn’t something invented after Return of the Jedi was released. In fact, as I dimly recall from my childhood, there were supposed to be nine movies in all! But I haven’t heard talk of an Episode VII in… well, in decades, I guess.
In the case of Lexx, the Insect Wars were merely backstory for Kai’s character. Famous throughout the galaxies, the Brunnen-G saved the universe from the evil Insects. The fact that many fans wondered about the details of that war demostrates how effective Kai’s character was defined.
Look, if they did an Insect Wars prequel, that’s great! I’ll be glued to the tube every week. But it wouldn’t be the same show. Sort of in the same sense the ST:TNG is not the same as ST:TOS. The first one was campy and sometimes outrageous. The second one was a bit more stiff and serious. Both good shows, but very different in style.
But yeah, you’re right about my opinion of the later seasons of Lexx over the first season. I really enjoyed the goofball stuff that happened with Xev and Stan. In my viewpoint, the Beans have laid a firm foundation for Stan and Xev’s characters. Both the writers and the actors are now very familiar with them. To shift focus to an Insect Wars prequel would require a huge shift in gears and an abandonment of everything that has been developed in the previous four seasons.
Hey! Why not have our cake and eat it? LOL! Why not produce BOTH show ideas? The Beans could turn over reins to some other group of writers, producers, directors, and actors to let them make a kick-butt Insect Wars prequel! The Beans could come in as consultants or be executive producers while they focus on the continuation of Lexx and the story of Stan, Xev, Prince, Priest, and Bunny! In fact, the more I think about it, the better that sounds!

The original movies had tons of humour in them, but it was a sly, black kind of humour which I loved. I would dearly like to see a more serious series with flashes of gem like humour in it, rather that the pie in the face stuff that some of the series episodes resorted to. I donot think this would be pandering.
I’ll tell you exactly how so. If a writer has a good idea but ditches it because he thinks the fans wouldn’t like it, that’s bad. He’s not being true to himself. Even worse is if the writer mechanically writes a new tv show because a specific story is demanded by the fans. I writer writes what he writes becauses a feeling inside tells him what the story is. Sure, he can take suggestions. And he can also have a go at writing a specific story that is demanded of him and not of his own inspiration. But the results can be less than satisfying.
To create a specific story on-demand is awful for a writer! It’s extremely difficult to pull off in a pleasing manner. I wouldn’t want to push that on anyone. Writers “discover” stories and are not dictated by legions of fans. You don’t see people lobbying Stephen King for a specific book.
Do you understand what I’m getting at? Television writers can write something and then later decide if it’s worthy of putting on tape. Not the other way around.
The Beans are going to write what they write because they want to. Not because we want them to. That would be pandering and would be less than worthy.

I’ll monitor his activity if he rears his ugly head again. Next time I won’t get involved, but I’ll do more screen-captures of his posts before he deletes them.
But I still don’t like the idea of letting this troll wander about here. Everyone seems to hate him. And I think we’ve been exceedingly tolerant.
However, he may have already left for good, thinking that he’s already been banned. But also be on the lookout for emails from him. I understand that he attempts to gain sympathy that way. (In typical troll fashion.)

Flamegrape, I said something before about going against the wishes of the fans…in which you were quite correct in that it was an arrogant assumption to make.
However, you’re comment about Lexx being un-epic like is not something I would agree with (yes we’ve had the argument about the literal sense of epic), you have to remember there are fans out there who loved Lexx because of the movies (me being one).
If there was to be a prequel involving the insect wars, then it would very much be of Lexx’s roots, but even the movies carried a certain amount of comedy.
But if you take a look at the ratings, then it’s obvious that the one’s that pulled in the most were the likes of Vlad and IWHS, whereas Midsummers and it’s ilk were not hit’s.
I loved Lexx for whatever it did, but a return to the ideas that inspired it would drag in more people.
So if you actually believe that the entire fanbase would like to see Lexx continue the way you’d prefer it, then I’m afraid it is you that is making arrogant assumptions.

You’re putting words in my mouth, Squishy!!! I did not say “the entire fanbase would like to see Lexx continue the way I’d prefer it”. I didn’t say anything of the sort. Are you talking about my idea of continuing the show with Xev, Stan, Prince, Priest, Bunny, and the women? I said that because JumpingJedi asked for everyone’s opinion! I also gave out my opinion on the other two options presented by JJ. Back off with the innuendo!
Now if you ask my opinion…
If the show itself continues, I really don’t think it’s going to return to the stiff style of the first series of movies. It just wouldn’t make any sense to me. However, if the next installment of Stan and Xev’s story comes in the form of a movie (like what JJ said about the SFX interview with Xenia) then it would seem to make sense that it would have a little more serious theme. But not much.
If they make a prequel spin-off based on an anectdote of Kai’s backstory, then it would be the epic space-opera that you want. I’ll be sure to watch it. But I seriously doubt that it would be written and produced by the same folks who wrote and produced Lexx: The Series. They wrote the television series the way they wanted. It changed and evolved over time. Do you think they are going to drop their style and pander to the fans? I really don’t think so.
