ParticipantA “list” is one of the most powerful tools out there. Sadgeezer has a list called a Sci-fi Directory and is the mark of this website. I am also compiling a list (of free thinkers…..) that is available to anyone of like mind that is interesteed in happenings in this area of interest. It is a compilation of things that are connected in some way; a tool. A list can be used for good or evil, ranking, storing or just “tidying up”; many go shopping with a list (but many do not and spend too much…..). Actually…..why was this question put forth on this board?

ParticipantGood Luck Sadgeezer. I have just been through that “gut wrenching” experience. Took me three days for the new DNS settings to finally point to the new server and almost six days for my ISP to point my home line at the new server (i.e. they also had the server my site was originally on…..the pricks…..). All ok now, but not a fun experience.

ParticipantI have a mixed view about interactive forums on websites. In many ways – human beings being what they are – a board can steal the attention away from the other interesting aspects of a website. They are a drug on a website in many ways. The boards require more attention than the other areas; some discussion is productive…..but most is just socializing. They can draw many people to a website…..but many just go to the forums and avoid the other areas…..
So a mixed bag. I must state that I am the worst offender for spending time on interactive forums. I tried to avoid the BBoards on a site created just a few days ago; but the others wanted the BBoard….. The net result is that I will probably spend the most time there…..I is sad….. 😥

The website:
has now reached a point where it’s personality is pretty much defined. I am now including downloads and the message board is up. However; before I drop the topic of this website, let me know what you think of the idea behind it and the way it is presented. I still am interested in input and will take any recommendations seriously. Apart from that…..let me tell you that it has been nice hearing from you all and thanks for the good luck.

ParticipantA Sadgeezer Exclusive: Ok, I have installed a BBoard called the “Free Speech Board” on the “Contents” page. Feel free to try it out and tell me what you think of it (you do not have to register). Personally, I think the board adds needless complexity and effort, but the others thought we needed some kind of interaction at the site…..so here it is. We are still weeks away from the “Grand Opening” at Colleges and Universities around my area, so I want to see how it performs now. P.S. I have seen BBoards in action in the past and I do not hold any great expectations for this one (if there are major problems…..then out comes the “hook”) – but we shall see…..

Meanwhile…..work continues on the website:
I have just switched to another server and the site should appear now. I now have the capability of large storage and downloads plus the capability of a BBoard (which may come soon). The main pages still remain simple in order to facilitate fast navigation regardless of the type of computer you are using; please understand this when visiting. Check out the “Archives” section as I add to it daily and feel free to give me some ideas at: fortressoffreedom@hotmail.com
Thanks for your time on this project…..the vision is coming true.

ParticipantTo all you Sadgeezers: I am developing a collection of small groups or individuals that embody the concept of free speech and free thought (in the “Archives” section). If you know of any and want me to post them in my site, contact me at fortressoffreedom@hotmail.com. In another matter; I can now enable a discussion forum on this site. Is this a good idea? This is an extra cost option…..but is this a “site killer”; especially at this stage of development? Do I really need this? Let me know before I finalize things with my host server. Sorry for taking up more of your space Sadgeezer.

ParticipantRe Jhevz
I have always taken an interest in my fellow member’s web pages; yours is no exception. However, if you are asking me to evaluate web page construction, then I must tell you that I am in no condition to evaluate anyone’s website…..I am a newbie fourth class….. The best advice would come from those successful at this venture…..like Sadgeezer himself. I just spent the better part of the night installing experimental software that went horribly wrong; only good thing was that it was on my “empty” corporate server…..so the site was not damaged. The only thing I really did in the end, was to install the “Links” page (anyone who does not want their link at my “site” (if you can call it that), let me know and I will remove it). This little disaster was humbling and I could never fill the shoes of people like Sadgeezer, who no doubt had similar problems in the past – but with all sorts of archived data, etc..
In fact, I am feeling a bit awkward about talking about my website on Sadgeezer’s website; he has been wonderfully tolerant, but I do not want to over stay my welcome. I will try to get some form of interactive messaging installed as I think that I will probably keep the site up and have a go at promoting it…..when it is ready. As it stands; I had two small organizations that I wanted to post in the “Archives” section, postponed due to my ego and the new software…..live and learn. The site is about the little guys standing up to “Big Bad Brother” and almost always in a futile effort; but I will salute them and give them their notice…..hopefully, others will notice.

ParticipantTaking a breather, just a few more notes:
The forums contain many files now that are not named (only the Iraq photos are named); so just because the selection says (.e.g. “Fiction 1”) that does not mean that there is nothing in it – there is. A named file is a permanent one. So fish around if you are so inclined…..
The entire site may go off the server in about two weeks. I have to think about the original intent. I am really interested in the “Fortress Project” firstly and the “voice” of the unheard secondly.
Adding discussion forums is costly (I think – let me know if it is not) and while it would be interesting to see Fatguy Jr. displaying his bum on the site…..that is not a priority right now….. I was also talking to my number two about “risk” in an open accessible site – all questions that have to be addressed in time. It is not in the cards for me to end up in a prison by virtue of someone else using my site for nefarious purposes (this is why the construction sign is up on these forums).
I do not need fortressoffreedom.com on a server to attain the goals of the constitution, so we will see how it goes. I was looking at other sites and have concluded that I have the most primitive site on the net…..good – It is easier to experiment with simplicity instead of a convoluted maze of programing.
Thanks for all well-wishes.
Maurice
Fatguy
ParticipantRe Logan:
Two things:
1. The website is primitive because I wrote it all from scratch. The Fortress is a programing project that may be possible. However – as you know – any experiment is only as good as the foundation upon which it is built. Microsoft software would leave too many questions in my (conspiracy theorist’s) mind (actually everything about Microsoft has a “smell” about it lately…..). A “clean” slate was the way to go here…..
2. I originally set the mark at two thousand members, then rose to one million (depends on what you count as members). One million of anything seemed to be a good figure, and could be downgraded drastically – but never raised. Interestingly, it is the cost of this venture that may force the “change” of ownership and control, long before it should. The problem may be keeping control for the sake of the site’s purpose more than anything else. My departure is assured. On one of my favorite gun forums; serious consideration was given to “packing it in” on a very successful site because each owner spent about four hours a day working on the thing – unacceptable to me….. I am not doing this to see a pretty site with wonderful graphics, etc.. I am doing this as an experiment (I admit it is fun in a way…..) and following through on my own moral code. Part of me really does not want the bother of this thing, but it is interesting….. Two hours sleep last night because I was working on this site…..starting to sound like Pet….. 😉

Of what I’ve seen so far, it’s really good; I’ll write it down & look at it more later, when I have more time to view it properly. I really like the way you named each topic, then by clicking, takes 1 to another topic; there’s only 1 I couldn’t get, but when I return to it, I’ll let you know which 1, so you’ll know. May I make a suggestion, please put some pictures & your e-mail, so others can contact you if they also discover a problem.
Well done, Fatguy. 🙂Sci-Fi Fan to Sci-FI Fan,
Jhevz
Thank you Jhevz! 😀 I have to be honest with you that I am a little embarrassed with the site. I had to code the entire site in html by hand (a great experience…..but not one I would like to do again) instead of using Micro-fpxpress, but the next one will be different.
The pages are simple for a reason – the original specifications of The Fortress were that it be compatible with the 386 computer and up; this is met without the graphics (except for my personal page…..hehehehe 8) ) and I tried to keep things “vivid” with the very strong colors. Member no. 2 and I spent an hour trying to find a suitable cover picture for the home page…..but; every one was in some way offensive to someone around the world, so the simple layout is best. The site is now available to the third world – of which a voice is desperately needed…..
Also; if you notice – most of the site is hosted at my original dial-up service – only the home page is on the corporate server. This is because I am still shopping for a server; when things are definite, then I will start to “tweak”…..
This is one site that has a purpose; a real purpose and a constitution to go with it. Here you will find that the content out-strips the wrapping….. Actually, I hope that the site languishes through lack of interest…..a sign that we still have freedom of expression. I gave the site a 2 percent chance of succeeding – now I have it at 11 percent and rising…..
I still have tons of stuff yet to post on the site and already see errors…..Rome was not built in a day (P.S. If the need to post the soldier’s photos from Iraq did not come up…..Then I would have never have undertaken this endeavor…..too much trouble…..oh well…..).

An interesting topic – yes – but one that may have to be “shelved”.
Yes I “derailed it”; after I received several indications that I was about to possibly “upset” many people’s reality….. I had to “ease” into this subject…..posting a thread telling everyone how much I loved them, telling them I loved them at the end of posts, etc.. The idea was to examine the obsessive nature of fandom and the positive and not-so-positive results of such an obsession. I intended to back-off at the earliest signs of possible damage and that has already occurred. Obsession is something I personally have to deal with…..and I feel for those who may find this a trap. I tried; but I am way out of my league here. Apologies to anyone I may have upset. I will now take a back seat in this thread; but if any of you wish to continue – that is up to you…..

My Sci-fi Dream.
I dream of a world without hate,
A world where only love can flourish.I dream of a child of God,
Created by the union of me and you.I dream of a full life,
A life of no regrets. But if these dreams were not to be,
And if my tired face were to gaze at you.I could only hope to see my failure,
Reflected in eyes as beautiful as you.Ok, not Edgar Alan Poe, but not bad for “johnny on the spot”.
Now it is time for some lovemaking; but this is the internet – what to do – well the closest I can get is to show you a picture of my behind (if you want to that is…..):

ParticipantNow, apart from the interesting folks that you meet in sci-fi; I would have to say that early sci-fi held an allure that was dear to my heart.
Many of the social problems were not seen in traditional sci-fi. Racism, extremes in wealth/poverty, etc., were not the norm. I think the idea that mankind would explore or react to intrusions from outside – as opposed to reacting to internal problems – was a pleasant change from the turbulent sixties and seventies (for those of us old enough to have been around then 😉 ). If you look back then, you can almost see people talking and acting “robotically”. Science could solve all (we know it can not…..but what the heck) and science could get us out of any problem science could get us into (and again, we know that this is also sometimes not true). It was full of possibilities and adventure; no wonder many people would choose this genre as their choice for escapism.
I, for one, will admit to purchasing one of the first paperback pictorial summaries of Star Trek (which my sister sold at one of the conventions); and I can probably tell you the exact text of almost every episode from the original series…..if I am in the mood. Unfortunately, I never attended any of the conventions; but my kid sister did and helped organize them (and told me of the “Diva” like attitudes of some “B” grade actors of the original Star Trek series). My passion for the actual, present day sci-fi has waned, but not with the interaction of the sci-fi community. There are some real visionaries among you, and if you take an interest in your community (and play your cards right); you may just get the chance to put those ideas into being. Rambling on again when I should be working on a web page – Take care.

ParticipantOk, I guess I should have been more blunt about the question of this thread:
Number 1 is Number 6; and this eventual realization (culminating in some “insanity” just after seeing himself) allows Number 6 to blast Number 1 out into space. He is now free of his tormentor (himself) and “reborn” as the truck smashed through the gate, and delivered him into the “real world” of sanity.
As I said before: The Prisoner is his own tormentor = He is mentally ill!
The whole series is surreal; action always takes place with Number 6’s interest in mind. The reason for his torment are never clear. He is “too valuable” to liquidate (as this would be suicide). Whether by design or not; the series morphs into a study of egotistical megalomania. Those who think Number 6 is a hero are in for a big disappointment (this is why some people wanted to physically beat PM up in the streets after the last episode). We never do see where The Prisoner drives to at the end — a relapse or cure? Does it really matter…..just a TV show. Does it matter to you…..why?
Maurice
Fatguy
Participant

A better question is whether you should really try to make sense of it all. Why do it?
Erm, for fun? :P
Erm, for fun????? 🙄
Point taken, but is The Prisoner really fun…..;or is The Prisoner simply “cheese” for those about to be mentally trapped in a solipsistic/egotistical lifestyle? Is viewing “The Prisoner” something you would do on a first date? Are you bubbly and bouncy after seeing an episode of The Prisoner?
Is seeing that “Number One” is one’s self; an admittance to one’s mental illness (i.e. The Prisoner is his own tormentor – is he not…..); at the end of the series, was Number 6 driving to the mental hospital…..now that would be interesting…..

ParticipantWhat makes me passionate about sci-fi?
Answer: The folks that are passionate about sci-fi. Never have I met a group of people more fun to be with than you guys and gals (and yes…..sci-fi is one of the few places guys actually connect with women…..and still keep their manhood 😯 ).
Actually, I suspect that (like me 😀 ) many of you are on the edge of what most would call “normal behavior”; but this is all quite tame here in sci-fi land. I can actually poke fun at people and only get a poke back. On the gun boards (I am a reformed “gun nut”), if I poked fun at someone, this would be the response: “I know where you live…..and I will kill you.” That does not happen here…..thank God! Perhaps some of you take it a bit far; but I am quite open to your reasons to “live the sci-fi lifestyle.”
There is nothing wrong with trying to escape the ‘Horrors” of the real world, by immersing yourself in sci-fi. I was most enthusiastic about sci-fi during my university years when I was under much pressure to keep my marks up, etc.. However, when I stumbled upon obscure web sites where people talk about the “horror” of some LEXX fiction I wrote, I have to wonder whether these folk may be confusing fantasy with reality. I constantly see this slip from reality into fantasy in the fan web sites, where an out of character manipulation of one of the fictional charactors – results in a passionate response from other members; almost as if that particular interpretation may disrupt the reality of that fictional character in the more obsessive minds. In a nut shell – talking about a sci-fi character “out of character” is forbidden, like these fictional characters actually exist…..
I won’t even get into the people that live their lives in sci-fi land (like that woman who goes to work in a Star Trek uniform 😯 😯 ). I work with a Trekkie who owns a communicator and phaser; what would he say if he was caught with these toys by neighbors, etc.. What would he say…..what would you say?
Maurice: P.S. I love you all…..

ParticipantRe Logan: A better question is whether you should really try to make sense of it all. Why do it? Did the author of the story intend you to make sense of it? Is your idea of “making sense” the same as the authors idea? Does it bother you if you can not rationalize unexplained behavior – if you can not deconstruct and “make sense”? I saw the series, enjoyed it and left it at that…..
The ability to pass by unexplainable things in our lives is necessary for our mental well being. Look at how some fans nit pick over every detail….. Patrick clearly looked upon these people as nut cases when I saw his face at one of his interviews….. I am more charitable as I am also an obsessive, the fans are not loonies – just obsessive….. However, sooner or later you have to realize that rationalizing someone’s head (like The Prisoner series to a degree) is a futile ambition as we are not rational. I am probably more rational than most – and this fact only makes me hated all the more…..go figure…..
Best thing for all of you fans reading this – is to step back – put this thread out of your mind, and go do something else….. By-the-way…..did I mention that I love all you guys? I do…..

ParticipantTo Logan and other Canadian Sadgeezers:
It looks like the “Right” is about to unite; and it looks like Mike Harris (former Premier of Ontario) may lead this union into the next election.
I knew Mike Harris before he became Premier through his regular correspondence with the Ontario Handgun Association, of which I was a member. He would tell us of the various laws that would have impact on us and his reasons for voting on specific issues. Mike Harris is a gun owner (or at least was…..as he owned several guns when we knew him…..); and like most gun owners, when he gives you his word, it means something. He will be remembered in Ontario for saying what he was going to do before voting day…..and actually doing it after voting day.
I used to joke with my parents about Mike Harris becoming the next Prime Minister (they hate him…..hehehehehe…..), I now think he has a shot at it. It is still early days and anything can happen; but I can not contain my enthusiasm when I see – what used to be an ordinary man – rise to possibly take the highest position in this country. Breakfast with my folks this morning is going to be interesting….. 😆

ParticipantRe sgtdraino: I read the whole thing 8) . Your post seems to me to be nothing more than the frustration of someone who feels helpless to do anything significant about the issues he/she feels are important in life. What you have done with your post is to simply present your views in a much smaller venue (i.e. Sadgeezer.com), so that your opinions will have more weight among this smaller group and thus alleviate some of the frustration and helplessness in your life (we all do it, especially me…..). That is as far as I want to get into your head; but there is one more issue I would like to clarify.
You wrote: “You do need to realize, however, that philosophy, humanitarianism, and ethics are simply other, secular forms of religion. They just don’t ascribe their origin to a higher power. Making them fundamental to governance is no better than making Christianity, Buddhism. or Satanism fundamental to governance.” You are wrong…..they are not. A religion attempts to explain away that which we can not explain with the mental tools we have available (faith). Religions are necessary precisely because we now know that the limits of epistemology dictate that we will never be in a position to comprehend ourselves fully. To give you an example; my metaphysical investigations resulted in me turning (unknowingly) to a form of theology. The fields of Philosophy, for example, are simply mental tools for a practical purpose in our daily lives; they describe relations between things, but not the things themselves…..
Why religion in government? Perhaps because humans are fearful creatures who would feel less in control of their fate if their governance was not tied to a religion of some kind. You can try to examine real life examples of this and determine which of the two systems has more staying power…..hehehehehe.

However, I only have positive wishes for you younger folk still trying to create.

ParticipantI do not have satellite or cable or, even…..”rabbit ears” – so no TV for me….. When I am at my parent’s house, I usually just look at “Headline News”; but on Sundays I always try to see Futureramma. Sadly; the NFL has taken it’s time slot (and I only get interested during the later part of the season…..).

Participant
I feel your pain, Fatguy. It’s extremely unpleasant to have assumptions made about you based on your race.
I know how it feels. There’s a guy here who constantly insinuates that I must be racist simply because I’m white. It’s not nice. :(
You’re not the only person on the planet who has a hard time and you’re not the only person on the planet who cares about the misfortunes of others. Me, I’m tired off the accusations of racism and elitisism which you are constantly implying in your posts.”
Ok…..you are right and I am “busted”….. You have my apology – sorry….. As a token of my friendship, I offer you some “eye candy”:

ParticipantThank you reproducing the comments Flamegrape. As for the “style” of writing – or lack of – well…..as long as I get my thoughts across clearly…..then I can use any style of writing I choose (it has been 20 years since I graduated from university…..I thought I now had a free hand…..). My biggest problem is a form of censorship from the society I live in, and not really from the people at this board. I have been wrestling with an exciting project that I started but must stop…..in fact, that is a story in it’s own right…..

Participant
After seeing that one of the links leads to something marked bowel.htm, i decided not to go there!!! The ick factor—
Precisely the point. You can go there if you wish. Many people expressed a desire to see what all the “fuss” was about and the “bowel” link is it. The second one “five” is a story I wrote one year ago about the LEXX series, again, people wanted to see the story (although it had been up for a few days) so I put that one up also. Oh no…..the pavement guys have arrived and are to start ripping up my driveway – bye…..

ParticipantThis is one thread that really bothers me (like a boil on the bum…..). 😡 Why do the numbers keep growing when this thing is effectively “dead”. I even took down all the photos and my text and you still keep viewing this thing…..
What is the attraction to: “Fatguy Is A White Man”? Have I upset the apple cart? Does the fact that I may be a “White Man” make it all better? Would the stars be correctly aligned again if I was a “White Man”?
No – I am a Black Man – deal with it…..
Maurice: P.S. If you want the real “Fatguy”; go here, all real and making a come-back:
