This is from the aformentioned website on November 30, 2003:
”]On the B5 front, there has been something of rather substantial proportion
that’s finally gone from talk to money, such that I’m now working frantically
to meet some deadlines, but there’s nothing I can say about this until after
January 15th, probably closer to the end of that month.

The only thing I can say is that phase one of the new project is a go, hence
the furious writing schedule at this end of things, which is why I’ve been
silent until deciding to kick up some dust on the political discusion. I’ve
been writing my little brains out.

I know the immediate result of this will be speculation, but if we could keep
that to a low roar on the nets to avoid precluding anything, that would be a
wonderfulness. But trust me: I wouldn’t go on about something in this way if
it wasn’t a significant development. Just trust me on this one for a bit and
    hold fire until further word.

(Longtime followers of the various news groups know that an eep means that
something significant has happened, but that I can’t talk about it…the eep is
just a way of saying, on the QT, that something has, indeed, happened and it’s
real, not just speculation or maybe-gonna-happens. So on that basis, you may
    consider this an eep.)
Just having the show tabs woudl simplify the site layout. Teh whole “less is more” thing.

The tabs for Buffy, Firefly, and Prisoner could be replaced with the Scifi Shows tabs, which will send people to another menu (sections page) that includes the incomplete guide links, as well as individaully submitted reviews. This will be in effect what LexxLurker suggested earlier.

I think that the incmplete guides shuld stay on the larger menu found on the guides page (http://www.sadgeezer.com/html/Reviews+main.html) along with all the various links. This page is more dedicated to the reviews so more space can be alloted for review advertisement. As opposed to the left menu which is mearly for a quick hyperlink.

We should try the tab only menu for a little bit to see if it works.

Here’s a sample based on previous suggestions. I placed BSG on the top to help promote the new guide. After a little time, it will move down the menu. The Prisoner is at the bottom, and only as a tab, since the guide is still being completed, but everyone knows about already. It can easily be moved up to the top with subsequent links.

Note I fogot to add links to the Jokers and Prisoner Tabs. Again that can be easily fixed.

LexxLurker and I will be announceing the Battlestar Galactica SadGuide within the next few days. So I’ll be adding another Tab to the menu’s bar. Does anyone have any more ideas for the guides menu? While I’m adding the BSG submenu, I can eaily rearrange the order.

I’ve read a few snipets over the last month. Most of it, we’ve all heard is allbefore; ‘not giving up on B5’, ‘working frantically’, ‘lots of writing’, ‘something big on the horizon’, ‘don’t want to jinx’ anything’ and the likes.

It’s good news, but I’m not getting excited until I read something official.

I guess we’ll know more in a few weeks. 😕

I was notified about the post through email immediately. Unfortunatlyy some RL stuff (read: school, not Battlestar Galactica honest) prevented me from taking any quick action. I only skimmed through it at first. I was taken a back (I still haven’t read it in its entirety) by what I read. My original plan was to nix any personal correspondence and phone numbers. Then see what the rest of you think. But after talking with Frey, and skimming some more, deleting it works just as well. Unfortunately it was deleted before I could get any ip information (for future uses). I suppose I could still rummage through the logs, but I’m not that motivated. This person will either post again, in which case we’ll get it then, or not post ever again. Victory either way.

I don’t know if this is troll behavior. Is there an exact definition of a troll? But its certainly character assassination and not the site posting spirit of “Be most excellent to each other” 😉

I just finished watching it again. I was thoroughly impressed. I was expecting too much after the recent media blitz, but I was pleasantly surprised. The acting, special effects, direction, sound, writing, camera work and story were all exceptional. This miniseries seems to have nothing in common with the original is terms of quality. The original was campy, this new series portrayed humans, as humans, not some utopian ideal. I’m going to hold off on final judgment until tomorrow. But so far, so good.

I’ll certainly be posting a more complete review later this week.

I watched “The downlow: Battlestar Galactica” last Saturday. I even recorded it to the computer just incase I wanted some screen grabs.

I have a mixed reaction. On one side it looks really cool, good graphics, an epic storyline. But on the other hand, it could be another lame scifi channel original: lots of sex, violence, and bad dialogue. AKA a total cowflop.

    I’m hoping for the former.

I’m not too excited myself. But its not something I’ll most likely forget to watch, like Enterprise. Who knows, it may be good enough to warrant a Sad Guide.

I’m not old enough to remember the original. Actually I still had a few years to go before being born. All I’ve seen were the scifi channel during the daily cycle. So I don’t have an attachment to the characters or plot as much as older fans. Personally I thought the original was campy. But I do like the character of Starbuck, that played by Dirk Benedict. I know other fans share this opinion. And as the Richard Hatch interview suggested, if they had to castrate Starbuck, they could have done it better. But this is all in theory. I reserve final judgement until I watch the miniseries.

Oh yeah, one last thing: first sign of Starbuck – Apollo romance or sexual tension, and I reaching for the remote.

I’m not sure what this has to do with Thanksgiving or a lull in SadBoard posts, furthermore its not even funny in the classic SadBoard zaniness. Nor can I grasp why you inevitably kill any thread you touch with a completely off topic political statement. If you want to talk politics, start a new thread, in the appropriate forum. Otherwise stay on topic. THIS IS YOUR WARNING! Additionally, if you want to contest this, do NOT disrupt this thread further by commenting here, send me a PM.
Ok, I am being a bit snippy, but it seems that Americans think their lives and holidays should be common knowledge to all…..but what do you know of others? This is just something that constantly rubs us guys up north the wrong way and hell I’m telling you guys now. Perhaps it is just unconscious on your part, so don’t take it the wrong way.
No offense taken. Many Americans know nothing of the international world, and I doubt the average American could name two Canadian provinces. 70% of all American’s don’t know that New Mexico is a state! and only 2/3 can find the US on a world map.

However find it odd that Thanksgiving would not be more commonly known, just for the sheer fact that is starts the Christmas shopping season. Most of us on the board hail from western societies where it becomes quickly evident that the holiday shopping mayhem has begun.

Finally EVERY wall and “off the wall” calendar I’ve looked at in the last 5 years has been produced for English speaking countries. e.g. US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. As such, the holidays for all those countries are all listed (according to my kitchen calendar, Sunday is St. Andrews Day in Scotland). This implies that these calendars are sold in said countries. Therefore all of citizens in those countries have that same “What the #$%^ is ……… Day” thought. As for Thanksgiving; just from global American TV broadcasts one could easily assume what Thanksgiving is, and its cultural severity.

The week before Thanksgiving has seen a major decrease in board posts, for as long as I’ve been here (2000). The traffic is likewise down for other major holidays, like Christmas.
My only concern is the lack of a network. However it could prove to be quite a good thing. If SpikeTV or TNT were to pick up the miniseries and it’s ratings were high enough it could mean a continuation. Dunno if the Farscape fans or cast want that though, but definitely a possibility if they go to another network.
Just making a four hour miniseries and hoping someone picks it up is scary. No one in the states may choose to pick it up, but networks (the ones that partially funded the original farscape) in other countries will. This means that other coutnries will air the series first, allowing all the US fans to download it rather then watch it. So when it does air over here, its ratigns may be lower then if it were aired in the states first. And no offense to non-US nationals, but we have the larger television market, and its our ratings that count, unfortunatly. 😕

As far as continuing it, this miniseries claims to be an epic climax to the series, but how many times have we heard that line? They could probably continue the series, but it may not live up to its previous quality.

After what happened to B5: Crusade, I’m a little nervous abut any science fiction show being picked up by TNT. However, one of the contention points with Henson vs Scifi, is that Scifi wanted more creative control over the scripts, (as well as a lower budget). So Henson may not play along if TNT gets overbearing.

I don’t know. 20k pageviews for the old pages, vs 3k for the new ones! It seems way too unbalanced. Especially since so many of the features now only exist at the new site: news, downloads, links, sadboard. Its my understanding that the toolbar links on those pages wlll send people to the new site anyway for those options.

I’m inclined to say to forgo the banner link. Just add a redirect and force them to the new pages whether they like it or not. 😉 We can leave the old text on the page for search engine purposes, but just have hte redirect command at the top, so the action takes place immediatly.

Whatever course of action is taken. Please tell me how to do it, so in 5 weeks, when finals are over, I can get started with the mass conversions. Again 😆

    Something else interesting:

    According to the sadstats:
    We’ve gotten 862297 pageviews
adding up the number of visitors (which I beleive to be a synomym for pageview)
    by the hour: 883289
by the day of week: 883285
    by the month: 880282.

Why are all these numbers different? Its all coming for the same data.

One final contrivance is that at the top it list pageviews, whereas the rest of the data is for visitors. Curious, could this explain a descripency? between the sadstats own data?

in reply to: Site stats – huh?! #69203

(I was analyzing the data as I wrote this, so don’t expect a very coordinated response)

By looking at some of these numbers, my first instinct is to say that the data is currupted or the process to analyze it is incorrect. But other data suggests that the sadstats is flawed. It could very well be a combination of the two.

Some of the numbers such as 3mil hits-month to date sounds about right considering just how many smaller components each page is comprised of. A standard review page is made up of almost 50 pictures and blocks, so that severely reduces the number of page views.

I not sure what they mean by “pages”, but I’m inclined to think its defined as “page views”. If this is so, then these logs are overcounting by a factor of 8.4, or the sadstats are undercounting. One solution may be that the log is counting each time a block is loaded as a pageview. And since the average page recalls at least 6 blocks, with more on the main page, for mods, and a few other cases.

One major thing I have trouble beleiving with these new stats is the amount of data transfered. According to the “Total KBytes” the amount of data transfered is around 11.4 Gigabytes! For only half a month! Tony, do we normally transfer upwards of 30GB a month?

When I visit the site during peak hours, I see 25 guests and 4 sadgeezers. Yet during this period, the number of views does not dramatically increase. Nor does the amount of views for reviews/menus/news. Perhaps everyone is cruising the downloads section, or SadHOO, but I don’t see a corresponding jump is views for the normal stuff. What I DO see is a jump in the number of sadgeezers. Anyone else notice that we’ve been growing by about 8-9 members/day this month? A while ago we’d see only 20 new members a month. This data would support the new log analysis.

Is it possible that the sadstats selectivly ingnore certian types of page views, or that the log counts pageviews differently? The log may also counts views for the old html website. I know most foreign hardwired links point to those pages.

Another theory: Look at the avg number of visits; 2136, and avg page views; 23380. A visit is a unique ip addrees. By this convention, that menas that each unique visitor visits 10 pages/day. According to the sadstats, (this data arrived form looking at the stats daily) we average ~2800 views/day. The sadstats may not recognize php page viewsfrom the same visitor. For instance, go to the sadstats and immedialty hit reload. The page will most likely display the same number of hits for that day. Now log out and repeat. The number of pageviews increases by 1. This however, doesn’t work for reviews views, so it may only do so for core php pages.

Other questions: are we sure this data is exclusivly for sadgeezer.com? that it is only from November?

    (edit: grammar)

I think adding another forum for that is redundant. If someone wants to show off their website, they can put it in the signature of their posts, or add it to the SadHOO. Besides people will just post it in the wrong forum, like they always do anyway!

You bring up a good point about the number of forums. We could probably consolidate the forums. It doesn’t look so nice to a bunch of forums with 8 threads, the last of which hasn’t been touched since Clinton was president.

We could merge the B5/Crusade and Legend of the Rangers forum into a larger B5 Universe forum.

Stargate, Dr Who, Starhunter, Jerimiah, could be merged into the General SciFi forum.
Aeon Flux, HHG and Firefly (maybe even Red Dwarf) could also be added to the General scifi forum, but since they have their own guides, I’m apprhensive about that.

Possibly Buffy and Angel could me merged as well.

Lexx fanic and screenplays could be merged together.

A separate category could be made for non-scif forums encompassing: LaughterHouse, Pub, Discussion Fourm, Test posts, Announcements. Moderators will remoain its own category at the bottom.

The major problem as I see it, is that there will be alot of displaced moderators. (Note I’m sorry if I offended anyone, by trying to “eliminate” their forum)

I’ve only watched the episode a few times, and while it does get a little easier to swallow, its still a very bittersweet ending. I would agree with you that it is the best finale (that I’ve ever seen), which is fitting considering its one of the finest shows ever produced.

The music made it that much better, or tragic, or both! And as SadGeezer pointed out, JMS shutting off the lights and being the last one to leave the station is very symbolic.

Thanks, for the info on the finale, much of this I wasn’t aware of.
1. Of the 16 characters (I looked it up!) that got “star” billing in the previous 5 seasons (ignoring only Tracy Scoggins, whose part wasn’t “arc’), 9 were dead at the end of the series, and one was “missing.” Six survived. How long has it been since a show has been so profligate with its “stars?” Maybe “Danger UXB” had a worse casualty rate.
I think Sliders finished with a whole different cast, and Seaquest had a pretty large turnover rate. I’m not sure of the exact numbers, but Buffy seems to also be up there. Non-scifi shows like Law and Order, and Homicide: Life on the Street also had an ever-changing cast.

B5’s “problem” is that is has a huge cast. And many of the actors wanted to go off to do other things. So those characters naturally had to leave the series. I tend to ignore what happened with larger characters like Londo, G’kAr, and Kosh, because their endings had to do with a story arc that JMS set up years in advance.

I’m not sure if I’d count “Sleeping in light” as the end of the story, per se. It’s more of an epilogue like “The Deconstruction of Falling Stars”. One should count the number of deaths after “Objects at Rest”, because drawn out long enough, all the characters will die. No matter what its labeled its still a most excellent series finale!

I think were all in agreement that Fatguy is annoying and further more; has the mentality of a teenager who’s disgruntled with the world. Are we even sure that he isn’t actually a teenager?!

I’m hesitant to join the lynch mob, because I think I did it too fast with Bonnee almost a year ago. After reading God Emporer of Dune I realized that “predators” are required for evolution, or in this case, keeping the sadboard moving and exciting. But at least Bonnee, toward the end, would argue something halfway intelligent. Or at the very least copy and paste some philosophers entire doctoral thesis to try to argue his point ;). With that said, I now pick up a torch and pitchfork and start shouting “dead thing pie!”

I think we compromised too quickly with him the last time over his scat fetish. Specifically our new policy toward posting links to controversial material. Personally I think making a post that says:
    “Hey WXYZ! Click here!”
and the link goes to a page with a giant “Screw You” or someone’s ass, is the same thing as actually posting it on the board. One could argue that by allowing that link we are condoning the material that its linked too.

We reprimand the other people (ex: promoters/one time posters) who effectively post an ad on the board for their event or product. Why are we treating his shame<s>less</s>full plug any different?

I would just ignore the prat. But I keep getting these emails with his posts so its kinda hard to ignore. One of these days (read: 5 weeks till finals) I’ll come home stressed and impatient, read one of his 14 year old’ish insulta and head straight to the administration panel for a ban. But until that time, there are other actions we can take. Have we tried contacting him through PM to tell him to grow up? Better yet, whatever happened to our idea of placing a picture under the users info to alert the other users of his troll status?

This free speech thing is a touchy subject. Even closing his topic can be construed as a violation of those rights. I too, considered just closing that advertisement. I somewhat feel that considering his ideals, any action we take is a problem to him, therefore “in for a penny in for a pound”. I already have a free speech argument set up for the troll image 😈

As for the porno on his site: we can’t really say anything considering the vast selection in our own downloads section. 😉

    2) You must NOT kill the one that is already dead.

I really think this must be Morden. Morden died back on Zhadum along with the rest of the crew when he was either put in a machine, or gave himself to the Shadows willingly. But whadda you guys think?
Londo had to kill Morden and the shadows on Centauri Prime to keep the Vorlons from destroying his planet. When the Vorlons were still coming to blow up the planet, he realized that he too had shodow influence, and needed to be killed. He begged Vir to off him. This was certainly a redeeming quality. So killing Morden was something he should have done.

John Sheridan on the other hand is someone who had already died. If you remember your future history ;), Sheriden and Delenn were captured on Centauri Prime shortly before Londo and G’Kar throttled each other. His keeper commaned him to have the two killed. Instead Londo got drunk, thus distracting the keeper long enough to say his goodbyes and tell the couple to get the @#$% out of dodge. To continue the story, this drunkeness also allows G’Kar time to come in an kill him before the keeper would notice.

Londo’s non-killing of Sheriden/Delenn and sacrificing himself for the betterment of the Centauri, (and the Interstellar Alliance) is what saved him. For if he lived on, who knows what havok the Drahk would have let loose in his name.

The number of hits has come back down to “normal” this month. But I’m still seeing the same 10+ guests. I think these are real visitors as the number of reviews hits are increasing, but not overall site hits as the case with the hacks/spidering. My reasoning is that the visitors are taking the time to read reviews and not just randomly visting webpages and leaving. Hence why we’ll see the smae 15 guests over a 15 min period and only have +10 pageviews.

Sci-fi.com like Sadgeezer.com has the same repeat visitors, but if you check archives, at the height of Sci-Fi shows there’s always a huge increase in new posters at Sci-Fi.com and they’re all asking for more resources/interviews/content.

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but we’ve been getting a large number of hits the last few days. At first glance, it does seem that reviews page hits has increased (esp for TTR). The number of registered users has also jumped. But this still brings back memories of September’s search engine hit-fest. I don’t want to get too excited too fast.

I’m just a bit curious if this may have anything to do with the new server, and a possibly the search engines re-spidering the site?

I like the idea of a general sci-fi section. This will allow the stand alone reviews to be seen by the greater public then hidden in the review archives.

I’m desperate to find a way of making the site more approachable and user friendly so that peeps can post ideas, reviews, comments more easily. I’m open to all suggestions.
I guess its back to the ole’ victim of our own success thing.

There is NO shortage of opportunity for the visitors to contribute. The site is saturated with options to “submit this” and “tell us your opinion on that”, links. If a visitor hasn’t seen at least 10 of them yet, they’re blind!

My theory is that the average user is to shy to post anything let alone submit a review. It was months after I found the site before I registered. And almost a year before I made my first post! People just need that little push. One plan of action is adding a personal touch to our requests for submissions. And using the shotgun method on top of that. If someone expresses in interest in XYZ on the sadboard, email them (with our prestigious sadgeezer accounts) and ask/talk to them to submit a review. Offer to help them with it, or even offer my help 😉

Incidently, I started the thread about Battlestar Galactica soley for this purpose, and also to guage public opinion.

Something Tony and I talked about last week is that our guides set the bar too high for many visitors. They see guides with pics and sounds and all sorts of bells and whistles. They don’t need to concern themselves with the technical details like that. If they submit the text, we can take care of the rest.

I will be setting up a page in the next week as an advertisement for writing one’s on own review or guide. It’ll be something of a FAQ and “how to”. I also plan to place it in a block ad similar to what we used for the DVD captions contests and now for the TLD networks.
The main one is that I’m writing some scripts that will merge many of the main menu features and the guides all into one menu. The menu could be a popup type thing so that we don’t have to have some many blocks to navigate the site.
Pop-ups bad! I have a pop up blocker installed, and even when its turned off, I still close those annoying hell spawns before they have a chance to load (and I’m on cable too, I’m just that quick).
A consolidated menu isn’t a bad idea though. Aside from the main page though, are there that many blocks on a normal page?

Gilbertus will become the first Mentat;
Gilbertus, I don’t know what will become of him, maybe Corrino? I haven;t seen any hints toward mentat training. Besides the obvious machine teaching. I think the math slaves will become the future mentats.
Let it never be said that I don’t admit when I’m wrong. While re-reading Chapterhouse last night I found this little tidbit on page 230:

“Order of Mentats, founded by Gilbertus Albans; temporary sanctuary with Bene Tleilax who hoped to incorporate them into Tleilaxu hegmony; spread into uncounted “seed schools”; suppressed by Leto II because they formed a nucleus of independent opposition; spread into the Scattering after the Famine”

First off: oops. Good prediction Lexxlurker.

Secondly: Gilbertus sought refuge with the BT? This opens a huge discussion and lots of conspiracy theories. Here’s one:

Since Gilbertus went to the Tlulaxa, it makes sense that daddy (Erasmus) joined him. The Tleilaxu are infamous for hiding things, the may have felt that a sentient (human-wanna-be) machine could prove to be a valuable ally.

In GEoD we learn that the machines would have destroyed humanity (soon after the time of Muad’Dib) had Leto II not started his golden path. In Heretics we know that the BT were biding their time for eons to rise to ascension. The whole time keeping many of their assets hidden. Perhaps Erasmus was one of those assets?
However this doesn’t gel with the Tleilaxu’s extreme religious fervor against the machines, as displayed in House Atreides. Maybe their robot secret laid dormant for centuries, hidden from all but the top eight masters?
Or maybe Erasmus arrived on Tlulaxa in pieces, appearing to have been destroyed. But secretly he was still cognicent and waiting for his own time of ascension, when humanity would again regress to the point that they weren’t truly living. Such was the case when the Titans originally took power. We know that the Quizarate would have repressed Humanity into such a state, hence why Muad’Dib/Leto II eliminated them. The relic of Erasmus could have been taken into the scattering, where he would later ascend and take control of Scattering Tleilaxu forces (from the Honored Matres. We never did learn where the Handlers of the furturs came from. We know that they were genetically engineered humans much like the furturs. bread to control the man-cats. We also know it was the furturs who chased the HM out of the scattering. Maybe Erasmus had a hand in this?

Lots of theories, I’ll have to sit and try to think of one that fits though.

I was starting to really like Jonas. They didn’t give him much in the way of character centered episodes (mostly just that piss poor remake of A Beautiful Mind), but his character was starting to grow. Then they nix him as quickly has he came. I thought his exiting scenes were poorly written and planned. “I came here to make up for Daniel’s loss and now that he’s back I’m no longer needed” Please! Overall the entire character seemed tacked quickly on. I would like to see him come back though, even if its just as a normal reoccurring character like Bratec.

    {moderator note: since season 7 has started to show in most western countries, we can openly talk about those episodes without spoiler warnings}

Nothing would burn America’s ass more then seeing another country’s flag on the lunar surface. Especially and that of a communist nation! This will cause America to start another !@#$% contest , this time to get to Mars first! A science/technology “war” amognst laeding nations will be a great thing for all human advancement.

England is very close to joining the space club, AND be the first nation to send a commercial/private craft into space. I think they’ll be set to launch within a year or so.

I’ve also read some “serious trash talking” coming from Japan. Something to the effect, that this put pressure on them to also acheive a human space launch. But they did point out that it’s a non-military venture, so its a good thing.

As for right now, I’d agree Raimi most likely holds the rights, he wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.
They lost the rights after the first and second movies, hence why they had to tweak the backstories a little bit.

They want to make a fourth movie, but the funding wasn’t there until recently. Popular rumour suggests that something Evil Dead related has being bounced around in the last 6 months.
At the true speed of Absolute Zero, or 0 Kelvin, time also stands still as molecules stop moving altogether. Very similar, I’ve always wondered if there’s more of a correlation than people realize.
Sorta, but not really. At absolute zero, there is no thermal energy. Translation: no random energies that allow the atom to bounce around, shake, move or otherwise interact with its surroundings. It has been effectivly cut off from the rest of the universe, until the universe “decides” to “mess” with it. Such intereaction can happen when a low energy EM radiation (IR rays, say from the sun, but any other matter >0 K will suffice) is captured by the atom. This will dump energy into the atom, and cause it to move. But I digress, to the atom times still flows at a regular speed, but its not doing anything, it just slows down. Think of it like being exhausted, you stop working. Once you get some coffee you start working again.
When a particle moves at relativistic (~0.2c or greater) time begins to slow for its frame of reference. Or the particle (really) speeds up for every elses reference point. At v~c time the relative time movement to that particle is ~0.

This can best be shown experimentally by using radiocative decay. (Note: this is the universal text book and paper example) A decaying particle will have its half life increased when it moves faster. That is becuase its time reference has slowed down. The partcle may think its still has a half life of T sec, but the neutral observer notices that the halflife is really >T sec. Thus both the laws of relativity and nuclear interactions are upheld.
Thermal energy has no effect on half life. A 0.1 K particle will still decay at the same rate as a 10,000 K particle. Assuming that both have the same speed to our neutral observer!
Given the time and money I’d love to run near 0 Kelvin particles through an accellerator just to see what would happen. Id imagine you could come damn close to stopping entropy in a single particle.
It would seem that way, yes. However to move a particle, you must give it energy, and thus heat it up. A neutron at room temperature ~300 K will move at ~2200 m/s! The faster it moves that hotter it is. A single .99c atom is tremedously hot! But we humans could not detect this heat with out bare hands because it alone has so little thermal energy compared with the rest of out enviorment. Note: This is why I put the bold explanation in the last paragraph. A subatomic particle with a ****load of energy will move very fast by default, and thus appear to decay slower)

I’d like to say more, but this little window isn’t convinet for scientifc writing (read: I can’t type equations very well without it taking forever to type and format)

The fact that the facedancers could see the no-ship shows that they are evolutionarily advanced or have some cool technology (thainking machine?) Assumignthe former, this assumes that these two have some form of prescient abilties.
Marty: “And I had such a nice planet picked out for them, one of the best. A real test of their abilities”
I think this net, was an actual ship capturing device, one that would have purposefully put the no ship crew on a planet. Its likely that Marty and Daniel wanted to toy with them first. Give them some more expeinces, then absorb them for their own use. Maybe the face dancers are themselves fighting a larger force, one that is trying to exterminate humanity as a whole. It doubtful since Daniel seems more concerned with his simple life pleasures like grdening.
Marty: “Gather up enough people and you get a big ball of knowledge, Daniel! That’s what I’d have told him. ANd those Bene Gesserit in that ship! I’d have told them how many of them I have. Ever notice how alienated they feel when we peek at them?”
So I guess we know what happened to the Bene Gesseit who went out (recently) into the scattering. MAybe evensome of the earlier BG scatters. If I were t try to absorb a lot of memories quick, I’d go for the sisterhood with their other memory.
MArty: “You know what you let get away, Daniel? That Master had a nullentropy tube in his chest. Full of ghola cells, too!”
    Daniel: “I saw it.”
Marty: “That’s why you let them get away!”
Daniel: Didn’t let them. Gholas. He’s welcome to them.”
So they don’t like gholas. They think its not worth the effort to collect them. Why? Because they have no memories! No experiences to gather. What these two don’t realize though it what ghola cells they are! (This shows a limit to their prescience. The memories of Muad’Dib are completely worth the effort. The other cells of other 7 masters of the Tleilaxu, Stilgar, Thufir, and Duncan are also quite valueable. Of interest may be Chani, and the BT techs that are also stored in the nullentropy tube.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, this is a spoilers thread!
all the sudden that conversation makes a lot more sense at the end of Chapterhouse, but I don’t have the first clue of who those people could be. Could it be Erasmus and Norma???

At the moment I’d argue it’s Erasmus and someone. Erasmus is clearly seeking a way to turn his programming into DNA, or at least that’s his dream. He claims it’s impossible but he doesn’t know about the Tluxla (Tleilaxu) *yet*.
Norma? No way! Erasmus, good chance. I predict he did escape the jihad, and made his way into uncharted space. 15,000 years later when the Bene Tleilax (castoffs) new Face Dancers most likely found him and absorbed his essence. This advanced face dancer, now Erasmus saw his chance to control and understand humanity, and took it.

I doubt the Tleilaxu/Tlulaxu had anything to do his transformation. I believe Erasmus did it on his own.
I’m thinking it’s going to be a Lexx type beginning (Think episode “Mantrid”) Erasmus will realize there’s no way machines can defeat humans in their current state and become human, creating the Bene Tlielax inner-circle of Masters and their “Long Waiting” explained in Heretics of Dune as Spannspagogen or something like that.
I agree with the Lexx Mantrid theorem. Again I doubt a BT connection.
Gilbertus will become the first Mentat; Norma will leave for Arrakis and become the first Reverend Mother there, creating the prophecy that Paul Maud-Dib will one day fulfill (How about that chapter where she hears the Fremen screaming Maud-Dib, Maud-Dib, over and over, trippy!!)
Gilbertus, I don’t know what will become of him, maybe Corrino? I haven;t seen any hints toward mentat training. Besides the obvious machine teaching. I think the math slaves will become the future mentats.

Norma, she’ll lead the foundation for the Spacing Guild. The Rossak Sorceresses will become the Bene Gesserit. That was obvious from the first paragraph of their introduction. (All women, psychic.magic powers, breeding programs, oh yeah it the BG in the making) The Sorceresses will adapt their training from what they learned about Norma.

The Muad’Dib scene is cool for anyone whose read the original Dune first. In ten years, when someone (for the first time) begins to read the Dune Saga, in order from Butlerian Jihad, the Muad’Dib hints will make for a truly great overall story.
The visit to Bandalong was INCREDIBLE. I was so hoping they would include something like that. And the way the little Master said: “Mind if we take some DNA???” to Butler, what a laugh I got at that. Explains so much about how the Bene Tlielax were able to create their own Kwizatch Hadarich prior to Paul.
Those chapters were an unexpected but very welcome surprise. It added a lot to the book, and the entire Dune saga!
And what about those Harkonnen??? Xavier by far in my mind is the biggest hero of the series thus far.
The new authors seem to like to start off trilogies by challenging our views toward the Harkonnen. First an attractive healthy Baron HArkonnen in the House books, the a brave noble Xavior.
The big question for me, is how will Harkonnen line continue. There are no male heirs! Further more, the Atreides/Harkonnen rivalry starts at the end of the Battle of Corrin, when a Harkonnen heir/solider is accused of cowardice by the Atriedes. How can this happen? A Xavior ghola maybe?
IX and Richese are finally explained: They were both synchronized worlds and thus why in the Dune Saga are the most technologically advanced and feared. It’s likely because as they are digging more and more into their past they are uncovering more and more technology from the days of the Jihad. This is why the Guild and the Emperor claimed: “Many new machines on IX and Richese, dangerous machines”. This line ALWAYS confused me.
This clarifies the contradictory information given in the appendices of Butlerian Jihad. One index says their Noble League, the other Omnius. I glad for the clarification (I love the Ixians). According to popular belief, Ix, Richese were spared the total machine destruction because the Empire leaders knew that the technology would still be required in humanity. Those planets were to be set aside for machines, and quarantined off from the rest of the empire in case of trouble.
We also see how Iblis(and successor) is going to create the Orange Catholic Bible, which of course is the reason that during the Dune Saga no one really knows what truly happened during the Jihad. Because stupid Iblis took the Cognitors words and twisted it to his own purpose.
He laid the foundations for a single religious text. This way an accident of his political maneuverings. I suspect the lack of knowledge about Jihad times comes from 10,000 years of bad record keeping, whisper-down-the-lane story telling, and Bene Gesserit meddling.
The death of Hecate is really confusing, … But her true motives were never fully uncovered, just made even more elusive by that conversation with Agamemnon. I guess the end result is she wanted Omnius destroyed and that’s all.
Not just the evermind, but also to piss off the Titan’s too. She did think they were petty and needed to learn a lesson. I doubt we’ll ever uncover her true motives. Perhaps in Dune 7 when our heroes are exploring the unknown universe?
And finally what of the Titan Tlaloc? This is the Titan that supposedly ruled the Tluluxa (Bene Tlielax), could he still be alive and ready to throw a monkey-wrench into my whole conspiracy theory?
Dead, quite dead. He died of an “accident” ten years into the time of the Titans. See page 11 in Butlerian Jihad.
The worst part about this book is it ends and you’re left wanting more and more!! But the greatest thing is you could take that “Dune” tag right off, and you still have imo one of the better Sci-Fi books written in the last 20 years.
Hell yeah! I’m sooo going to try to scam an advanced copy of The Battle of Corrin.
I’ve read through the first couple chapters, and it is a whopper!
It took me a little under 70 hours, and I managed to finish all 700 pages of size 10 font, half spaced, no margined Dune goodness.
“Do the ends justify the means?” while the machine-raised Vorian Atreides displays much more logical, machine-like conclusions.
This question is raised time and again throughout the novel. It’s likelt one of the main literary themes.
He also explores the moral conflicts we are facing today
I drew many similarites to Dubya’s administration and that of Iblis Ginjo. Their political methods seem quite similiar (Yes these comment are gonna get me put on some government list). It’s almsot like that used by President Clarke in Babylon 5. However this nook had to have been mostly written before most of these recent events occured.

Its nice to see that the Herbert’s still dispise beuracracy in all its slow forms. I swear GoED must have been written after Frank Herbert had to fill out a bunch of forms and stand in line for a while. Most of that novel is about why tedius slow government is a bane to humanity. Its a reoccuring theme in this new novel too.
So far I *dont* really like how much things changed between books. Granted they wrote plenty of short-stories(Which I haven’t got around to reading), but I didn’t expect there to be only 4 Titans left =/
Keep reading you will. The Titans come back in a big way! Toward the end they started to assimilate one Syncronized world at a time into their new Cymek empire!
But rest assured they replace the characters we miss with new improved evil characters like Beowulf.
Beowulf was let down. He has maybe 10 pages in the whole book. He’s more of substitute for Barbarossa(sp?).

Hecate was cool. Way too powerful, but I expect to see some remenant of her in Dune 7. She was taken out way too quickly and easily. It was way too convient of the authors to eliminate her, Veneport, Zufa, and Jool Neret all in virtually the same paragraph!

Jool’s mini story was too short, and we saw too little character growth. It one of the few things I’m dissapointed about.

The funniest chapter was when Erasmus and Gilbertus had “the talk”. Only scifi can make satire things like this and stay funny. Think of how scifi makes aliens think that “the finger” is a common earth greeting.

Overall I enjoyed the novel emensly, and will read it again soon. Unlike the Butlerian Jihad which was entirely predictable, this novel never failed to surpise me. I started to think that Iblis would become the Corrino Emporer. The won’t happen, especially after Xavior steered the two of them staright into the Tlulaxa sun! The book was well written and leaves me guessing about what will happen in the Battle of Corrin. How can they tie up all these loose story lines, and prepare us for the rest of the Dune series in one book?

I’ll add more after others have finished the novel.
bTW, I sent you a pM before the email about this, but obviously you didn’t see it (I always miss those messages you can access from the homepage.
Email works best for me. It checks itseld every minite. If I’m at the computer, I’ll get it immediatly.
There are two PM systems on the site though. The one you just tried, and another one for the bboard. The latter sends a message indicating that a private message has been sent.

There appears to be two identical Prisoner directories listed in the administration menu. How odd.

I’m not sure what that means. I’ve approved all the images. That could/should fix it. I’ll check a few other things though.
I would say Spanish, too. Spanish-speaking people cover a pretty large part of the globe.
Agreed
My husband’s family says they speak “Spanglish”, but you probably can’t find a translator for that. :P
I went to college in New Mexico for two years, I happen to be quite proficent in spanglish. 😛
I would also suggest perhaps Klingon and Mimbari? 😈 j/k
That actually sounds like a perfect idea for the site. While no one actually speaks those languages, it would fit in beautifully for the scifi motif of the site. I’d be willing to spend the time and effort to look for Klingon, Elven (Tolkien), or Chaksoba (Fremen of Dune).
For the third I’d argue French or German. I personally lean more towards French as thats more of an “international” language than German.
Demographically we have more people from Germany then France, so I’d have to choose German. But we have more from Sweden then Germany so… 😕
(I have to search for language packs for all the installed modules individually and it can be time consuming).
Can I give you a hand with that?
The variables being a mimimum of X bandwidth and Y Operating System, or similar.
Great! So how do we stop it?!
A bit silly though
I digress. Is it possible that by taking the site down for an hour, we may fool the fat-fucks into thinking they suceeded?

Although this won’t keep it from happening again in the future. Since the site hits have doubled in the last four days since the influx began, perhaps we’re dealing with more then one putz. Recently the site always seems to have at least four guests, poitnign to this scenario.

If were lucky, the program may be set to increase hits with a nice curve. After we “trip” I doubt it’ll happen again.

    0) How much danger is the site in, in terms of crashing?
    1) How can we stop this?
    2) How can we prevent this in the future, -Change servers? -add software?
    3) If adding software, can anyone steal some stuff from work or can we download a fix for it?
It could be anyone
Good point. Is it possible to see which ip adress’s are viewing us? If so can be ban those addresses from acessing the site and/or servor. I’m hoping that the chaos fiends who wrote the “idiots guide to cracking” software did not think that far ahead to block the ips.

I’ve been keeping track of the stats over the last few nights.

The number of views since I starting writing it down is:
    +28450
    For Broswers:
    IE +3 059
    Netscape +17 778
    Search Engines +3 559
    Unknown +3 979
    Others +75

The number of Netscape views is very out of the ordinary, and search engines seems a bit higher then normal. The unknown number has grown substancially since Friday night. And at an increasing rate.

The pageviews for reviews/menus has not increased appropriatly for the number of page views. Likewise the banner click through have not increased by more then a few (<10 per banner) over the last week.

If it is hackers, do we know what is their intent may be? e.g. normal anarchist stuff of trashing the site, or are they trying to overload it with pageviews?
Time For A Sadgeezer Constitution!

Just read some of the posts and think that maybe something good can come of this. We need a constitution – spelling out the intent of the web site, the structure (and who does what and is responsible, etc.), and what is expected of the members and clearly specified rules that are not solely at the discretion of a moderator.

    ***
Sadgeezer’s site with the multitude of moderators does need a uniform set of rules to protect the rights of all members.
You say you want a revolution?
Well you can can me out
You say you want a constitution?
Your persistent demands for sad constitution make you sound like a really bad remix of Revolution by the Beatles!

A constitution is not required, nor needed. The SADFAQ (also found on numerous other pages on the site) spells out the mission of the website. The Terms of Use (which is more of a legal CYA) talks about censorship and posting rules.

This melodramatic campaign against censorships fails to notice and/or mention, that posts are almost never edited or deleted. Further more, users are rarely banned, and when they are it’s only for a short period. In my two years as a mod/admin, I have never edited a post for content.

Considering that most posters are responsible and mature, having clear cut rules and guidelines are redundant and unnecessary. Those few individuals who insist of acting like pre-pubescent teens are rare, and won’t follow the guidelines any way. People know when they’re doing something wrong.

Drafting a formal set of rules is a waste of time and will cause the site to become much more bueracratic then it should ever be. We’ll spend more time arguing over the bloody rules then we will about the edit of a post!

This is a site for all scifi fans to enjoy. All the paperwork will bogdown the spirit of the site; reading about and the discussion of cult scifi.
EDIT: PS. How do I host an image off the site when doing an article? IE upload function Thanks! =)

It’s best to use the wysiwyg editor to upload pictires from your hard drive to sadgeezer.com and place them in your news reports.
There’s a right way, and then there’s my way! I tend to go to much more toruble then I have to. I upload the picture to the news category of the downloads section, then approve. Then using the Wysiwyg editor to do the article with all the trimmings. To save time I usually grab an pic already uploaded to the site.

The editor seems much more flakier then normal. During the last 250 conversions it behaved itself, never tripped at all! Now, all of a sudden, that its not beign used to reguraly it decides to trip every other post. wtf? Its still better then not having an editor.
