Most of the recent non-bookmark referal hits are coming from search engines. One in paticular stands out, http://www.mirago.co.uk . A new search engine that specializes in British websites and resources.
How should we determine what show is worthy of inclusion or indeed, how could we define Cult TV Sci Fi.
K.I.S.S. Answer:

    What is worthy of inclusion:
Any scifi/fantasy form of entertainment (book, show, movie, game, mini-series etc) that has one or more fans who are willing to spend many hours of their own free time to develope an entire sadguide (fansite).

If someone is willing to give up their weekends for a month to build a guide, then there must be others out there willing to spend their own free time to learn more about that program.

Should a medium of entertainment satisfy these statements, then it shall be determined to have a cult following. The true test is time. If someone is willing to do a fansite 5 years after the programs’ release, and people are still willing to read about it, then it has a surviving cult, and shall be truly classified as Cult Sci Fi entertainment.

I have noticed the site get slower recently. But I thought it had more to do with allthe search engines checking our new html pages. For those who haven’t noticed, all of the php pages have been converted to html. This allows the search engines to serach the entire site.

If we had to nix certain sections of the main page I’d remove: calender (it’s so congested with reminders, its somewhat impotent), sadhoo recent links, site progress, news archives (by months), polls, who’s online, and possibly limit the number of new news articles displayed.

The main menu, and sg guides blocks MUST stay.

While the site does seem slower, its not that bad relative to other websites upon initial loading. My homepage comcast.net and previous msn.com both take similar amoutns of time to load as sadgeezer.com. I’ve noticed some websites ebay, google load quickly; but lets not forget that these are HIGHLY commercial websites, whit much better servers then ours.

in reply to: Otheym: Friend or Foe? #67924

I’ve split up this topic into other threads, to preserve continuity, and start other larger discussions
Otheym was not a part of the conspiracy I think. He probably thought he was, but like many conspiracies there’s only 1-2 people who know the truth, and everyone else THINKS they are a part of it, but they are told different things entirely, and are really tools for the real masterminds. Think JFK and Ruby/Oswald.
He most likely thought he was part of the fremen conspiracy, on the side of Muad’Dib. I doubt he ever realized that he was part of the larger imperium coalition. In the end, he was little more then a tool, and he never realized it.

You do bring up a good point about him not liking the office. I believe that Otheym knew what was happening to the Fremen as a whole. He saw the corruption and perversion of their old ways. But out of his faith to his muadi, he remained silent.

This brings up a larger point. In Messiah, we hear for the first time “that every empire carries within it the seeds of its own destruction. The Oracle, Paul with Alia, saw what would destroy his empire, the Fremen. He owed his dynasty’s creation to his Fremen armies, and more importantly the Fedaykin. Not longer after his jihad ended, the Fremen began to notice the destruction of their culture and the degeneration of the latest generation. But by the time the first realized it, it was too late. Paul tamed his Fedaykin and Fremen armies under the disguise of rewards for a good military campaign. In doing so, he destroyed the force most capable of dethroning the Atreides. But at the same time, the castrated Fremen armies were still a strong enough force to protect them from outside threats.

The Fedaykin exemplifies Paul’s destruction of the Fremen culture. He took the strongest, bravest, and smartest individuals from Dune, thus depriving an entire generation their top genetic material. The regular fremen armies took most everyone else from the culture. All that was left was the weaker of the sub-species. either way, Paul succeeded in destroying the force with the largest potential to destroy the Atreides within a generation.
After Muad’Dib’s death*, Alia dispended the Fedaykin. This immediately forced the elite troops to joint he rest of the civilian population. Almost all of them went to live in Arrakeen, instead of returning to their seitches in the desert.

*When Muad’Dib walked out into the desert, under the laws of Fremen culture, he cemented the loyalties of the Fremen for the next generation. He knew this would have been the last true time of the Fremen. By securing their loyalties, he allowed the opportunity for his children to mature without Fremen interference. This, of course so that they could begin the golden path of humanity. Note: having the twins born in Tabr, also added to this.

It appears now that the search engines have spidered all of our guide pages. When I looked at the HTTP referrer page, I found these two pages:
    Google Search Page
    Yahoo search page
Both were looking for specific Dune related words. After you scroll down a few search results, you’ll notice the links to Sadgeezer.com and the newly converted webpages.

A quick look at the referrer page will also show that most of the traffic is coming from search engines.

Thanks Lexxlurker. Producing the Dune Guides was a lot of work, but it was ALL worth it. Most importantly, I had lots of fun makign the guides too!

It was LexxLurker’s original Dune Messiah review that inspired the rest of the guides. His review claried a lot of fuzzy points in the Children of Dune miniseries. It also motivated me to finally read all ten of the novel in the Dune series.

YOU TOO can create a review, or even an entire guide! All it takes is some paitence, and a passion for what your’re writing about. A spell checker wouldn’t hurt either 😉

I’ve heard some talk about the new V series. And scifi is coming out with a Battlestar Galactica miniseries this December. Maybe someone would like to make a guide for those 😉 hint hint

I’ve added some pictures to the results pages. I wanted to get really pornographic with the Dune Sadgeezers profile, but I decided on keeping it TV-14. (Even though there’s a “kiddies sod-off” warning, we all known there are some children who visit.) I’ve also tweaked some of the sentences in the Manic Fanatic profile.

I’ve changed the links for all of the autolinks, as well as taken care of all the hard wired links for Dune, TTR. Unfortuantly this still leaves the links for HHG, LEXX, Red Dwarf, B5, Aeon Flux, Buffy, Firefly, and Farscape. On the plus side, fixing thses links shuold only take about an hour.

Almost all of the old webpages have been converted! All that’s left is the 61 Andromeda pages/menus, and all the Jokers stuff. Not too shabby.
Unfortuantely, since we have hard-coded many of the urls into the site, the server will not be able to adjust these and therefore they will need to be re-entered (The reviews blocks that are on the reviews menu and the SG Guides block on the left). Any url that is dynamically generated will be translated by the server automatically.
Aw FUCK! I was this close to having all the old webpages converted. Now I’ve gotta go back and change some of the links too. Damn it all! Good news is that most of the links were done by the autolinks admin feature. Bad news is that the menu’s still have to be redone, and that there are ~120 autolinks. Well it shouldn’t take too long. Most likley only 2-4 hours.

Since the search engine will now read the index pages. I guess this mean we don’t have to go back and modify the old html pages with a big freakin redirect banner? If this is so, then it’ll save weeks of work!

From the vantage point of sadists perhaps. Let’s face it, some people are just sociopaths.
Why does France’s Chirac “hang out” with Iraq’s Saddam Hussain.
It probably has nothing do with all those big ($$) contracts, between the two countries.
Perhaps dinner with Amin would be very enlightening
Like trying a new dish?
do you really want a leader that thinks like the “masses”?
In Amin’s case, “You are what you eat”
What about Stalin, Hitler, Chairman Mao, The Emperor Of Japan (still responsible even though it was others that started hostilities), Ho Chi Minh, Mussollini, etc…..
Do forget Pol Pot, Kahn, Nero (and most the other Roman emperors)
why is Hitler “evil” and Stalin not?).
Re: Hitler – I can give you over 12 million reasons
Re: Stalin – I don’t belive I’ve ever heard him not refereed to as evil. (Hence the “Evil Empire” (yes I know that came later, but you get the idea)) Seriously this guy let 5 million of his own people starve/freeze to death because his bureaucracy forgot to send supplies to that area of the country!
The people of Iraq consider Bush to be evil…..
As do many western people, myself included!

You do have a point with the PR and spin doctors. It a long political tradition, and its inescapable. Any good ruler must lie a little to keep the populace happy. But compare little things like “I did not have sexual relations with that women”, to things like Saddam was trying to acquire African Uranium.
Stalin had his own PR work too. he capitolized of his relationship to Lennin. He had Lennin’s body embalmed to have him appear as a symbol for the people. A symbol easily asociated with him. Stalin’s own name is anther example. “Any dictator who changes his name from Yugash Feely (sp?) to MAN OF STEEL gets my vote, so to speak”

As for “evilness”, which is worse lying to the world to start a war for a natural resource, causing thousands to die; or personally brutally killing a thousand in ones own torture chambers?

    In our culture, the latter.

Yes. Thufir, was supposed to shake Paul’s hand, with a poison dart hidden in his palm, thus killing Paul. However Hwat only defected to the Harkonnens because he felt that he could best bring down the Harkonnen’s from the inside.
Just one thing, a stone burner was not a planet killing weapon.
Frank Herbert mentions what the stone burner does rather quickly. In Dune Messiah (the chapter was Arrakeen is stone burned (nuked?) he writes:
Paul remained silent, thinking what this weapon implied. Too much fuel in it and it’d cut its way into the planet’s core. Dune’s molten level lay deep, but the more dangerous for that. Such pressures released and out of control might split a planet, scattering lifeless bits and pieces through space
Its also mentioned in Dune: House Harkonnen that a Stone Burner is a planet buster. (I don’t have a copy in front of me to quote) When Earl Vernius is setting up the stone burner, to kill the invading Sardikar (as well as him and his men), he set it for a small detonation, rather then its full (planet killer) power. He did this because he didn’t want the innocent people of Dune to die too.
Othyem set off blew, it would have made a short series of Dune. 😥
True, but he only wanted to blind Paul. The stone burner was the most efficient means possible. Othyem et al, had no intentions of destroying their own sacred world.
Other than that tho, keep up the good work. This is a great site!!!
All registered user are allowed and encourage to submit guides and reviews. However drastically few have ever done so. LexxLurker and I are presently collaborating on the SadGeezers’ Guide to Dune. So to answer your question; yes.

When making the guide, just do the actual reviews/guides. An admin will set up the menu pages for you. Menu’s require administrative access.

I’m just stabbing in the dark but here goes:

The League of Nobles will be undergoing a series of planet hopping. Liberating/nuking one machine planet at a time in their quest to destroy the thinking machines. Rescuing whatever slaves they can in the process. The campaign will stall because the machines will prepare for invasions after seeing the ships enroute weeks in advance.

Erasmus and Agamemnon either independently or together will begin to undermine Omnious, and try to gain more freedoms from him/it. Onmious will slowly continue its genocide against the enslaved humans.

Holtzman will slay Norma after she (shows him up) creates a fold space engine. As usual he will take full credit for this great new invention. (side note: who’s less human Tio or Erasmus?) However repeated trials of trying to navigate foldspace
will fail, either in destruction or getting utterly lost.

Cut to Arrakis. Either Keedar of the Tlulaxa or Aurelias Venport will overdose on spice and begin a transformation into a navigator. My guess the later, because he’s been trying for psychic abilities to impress his love. Holtzman will hear of this transformation and will tap the navigator to fly the ship through fold space safely. This will enabel the leauge to surpise attack the machines, and bring the jihad to a near end.

Selim Wormrider will begin teaching the Fremen how to ride the sandworms and plant the seeds for the Freemen culture/religion we see later in the Dune novels. A Bene Gesserit missionary sent hundred of years alter will complete the cultural transformation.

I’ll say this much. Sci Fi announced a follow up to Dune before the first mini-series even aired its last episode. Sci Fi has barely acknowledged CoD’s existance since its airing.

Furthermore, there doesn’t seem to be a large following of people who demand another miniseries. Last I checked, only 125 names were on the GEoD online petition. 😕 😥 Sci Fi Channel wouldn’t listen to thousands of Farscape fans, do you really expect them to listen to a couple hundred? It’s part of there new stradegy called “F@#% the Fans”, but I digress.
As “Children of Dune” did not do anywhere near as good as “Dune” I don’t think it’s going to happen tho.
Interestingly enough, Dune averaged 4.4, whereas CoD averaged a 2.4. While this does seem like a huge loss, in terms of percent share of audience, it is not a big change in the number of viewers. Both mini-series averaged around 2.8-2.9 million viewers per episode. However, CoD had a larger cumulative audience than it predecessor (because of multiple showings). Because Sci-Fi has expanded the number homes it is now available to, since 2000, it has a larger audience. Therefore if about the same number tune in each time, but with the second time having a larger group of viewers. Then obviously the ratings share will drop. This is unfortunatly what the executives look at, because its so closely related to the $$. To comppund matters, CoD had a larger budget then Dune. In other words, Sci Fi didn’t make as much as they wanted to.
Hopefully CoD will do well enough on DvD for them to do the final mini series.
The week CoD was aired, pre-sales for the CoD DVDs were either ranked #1 or #2 for that week, for Sci Fi DVDs . With the other top slot being for the original Dune series. This is the rankings for CoD’s first week out for scifi DVDs: (last week)
    1. The Two Towers
    2. Star Trek Nemesis
    3. Die Another Day
    4. Buffy Season Four
    5. The Animatrix
    6. Chamber of Secrets
    7. The Matrix
    8. Children of Dune
    9. Buffy Season One
    10. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

I’m trying to download it now too. It’s telling me about 8 hours. I may be wrong, but the long time could be because its coming from his own computer with limited bandwidth. If other people are try to download stuff, then we’d all have to share the bandwidth? Plus the across the ocean thing may have a small effect.

Its a very cool thing you’re doing Tony. I’m usually pretty stingy with my bandwidth. As soon as Kazaa starts slowing my webpage viewing, I close it immediately. Speaking of which I’ve had a few people download part one of Kin Dza Dza form me on Kazaa the over the last few days

Personally I thought I could’ve only watched the last five minutes of this episode and not missed a thing. For the third week in a row I feel cheated. The story arc hasn’t moved much at all. One could argue that the episodes have all been focusing on character growth, but I feel that they’re not getting as much as they put in.

The matrix moves were nice, but it seemed tacked on. If Buffy could’ve done this all along, why are we seeing it now? And is she couldn’t, wouldn’t she have had to have practiced it first?
I just saw the episode with Nathan Fillion first appearing.

It seems like Buffy is taking itself FAR too seriously of late.
Its certainly hasn’t been the lighthearted show it once was. IMO though, a show can’t stay in ‘season 1’ mode if it wants to become great. A series needs to evolve and grow, in Buffy’s case, become more mature, and realistic (dark).

Nathan Fillion’s character is just evil. There is no way around around it. From just this one episode it appears that he’s one of the nastiest, most sadistic creatures t.v. has seen in a while. For a show that’s spent most of its time portraying the big bads as sadistic bullies at best and incompetent doofs at worst, having an enemy which is ultra (and true) evil ends the show on a more serious and mature note. How ridiculous would the finale be if the uber-enemy were some little girl in pigtails, with an oversized lollypop, who makes people explode just by looking at them?

I will agree with you though. The show is at times getting a bit too dark to enjoy. Much like S3 of LEXX or a couple episodes of Taken. However when re-watching the show later, I’ll, and I hope you’ll, appreciate how good it really is.

Is this because of the bandwidth issue? If so, does the site use up that much bandwidth from normal page views, or is it mostly from people downloading large media files?

I’ve already printed what I know:
•Stargate: Atlantis. This series centers on a new team in the Stargate SG-1 universe. A secret base left by the originators of the Stargate is found in the most unlikely of places: on Earth, buried within the ruins of the legendary civilization of Atlantis. A new team travels to a distant universe, where they find a primitive human civilization threatened by a sinister new enemy.
I’m looking forward to it. Although I’m not sure how close the show will remain to its SG-1 roots. It sounds like is may take a whole new spin on the franchise. Also I hope the quality is better then this last season of sg-1.

Of course this may all be moot. Since SG-1 is now Sci fi’s number 2 shows (Tremors is doing better in the ratings), the gerbils may drop the franchise in favor of its new favored child. They’ve done it twice beofre already, they don’t care about contracts (there’s always a loophole) or fans!
