Very nice… but I love the ginger persons. πŸ˜€ You might think about shrinking them down and using them on the back of the card… perhaps with the seasonally affective post note under them. πŸ™‚ While funny, it does inturrupt the main flow of the verse. And that way you can have funny twice when they look at the logo on the back of the card.

Yep, very educational sometimes. ‘Thank god and greyhound you’re gone’, is what is generally refered to as ‘Tear in your Beer’ county. And thinking about the republican’s made the tear part real easy and almost drove me to the beer part!

…oh. And yet again, the news I listened to on the way home did not kill my buzz. Yes things are happening, and yes some are bad, but at least I don’t have to worry about ‘Dubbau’ making it worse while his elected cheerleaders sing his praises. πŸ˜†

I was looking for something cute to put on my Christmas card return address labels and I found this. What a hoot. Makes me sorry I am not making my own cards this year. πŸ˜€

On the 12th day of the Eurocentrically imposed midwinter festival, my Significant Other in a consenting adult, monogamous relationship gave to me:

TWELVE males reclaiming their inner warrior through ritual drumming,

ELEVEN pipers piping (plus the 8-member pit orchestra made up of members in good standing of the Musicians Equity Union as called for in their union contract even though they will not be asked to play a note),

TEN melanin deprived testosterone-poisoned scions of the patriarchal ruling class system leaping,

NINE persons engaged in rhythmic self-expression,

EIGHT economically disadvantaged female persons stealing milk-products from enslaved Bovine-Americans,

SEVEN endangered swans swimming on federally protected wetlands,

SIX enslaved Fowl-Americans producing stolen non-human animal products,

FIVE golden symbols of culturally sanctioned enforced domestic incarceration,

(NOTE: after members of the Animal Liberation Front threatened to throw red paint at my computer, the calling birds, French hens and partridge have been reintroduced to their native habitat. To avoid further Animal-American enslavement, the remaining gift package has been revised.)

FOUR hours of recorded whale songs

    THREE deconstructionist poets

TWO Sierra Club calendars printed on recycled processed tree carcasses

    and…

ONE Spotted Owl activist chained to an old-growth pear tree.

Merry Christmas Happy Chanukah. Good Kwanzaa <=== all printed in strike-out text

    Oh, heck!

    Happy* Holiday!!!!

    (unless otherwise prohibited by law)

    * Unless, of course, you are suffering from Seasonally Affected Disorder (SAD). If this be the case, please substitute this gratuitous call for celebration with a suggestion that your have a thoroughly adequate day.

I wouldn’t stay it is a strict line, but for the most part I think that REAL sci-fi and horror are different. I cannot abide horror movies, shows or books. And it is just not the gory stuff (which I do hate) the psyco mind game horror stuff bugs me just as much.

Can sci-fi have touches of horror in it? Sure, so can romances and westerns. But lumping sci-fi and horror together (especially in the book store) is annoying to alot of people.

And it isn’t about pigeon-holing stuff. Lots of blends out there in books, tv and movies, Historical/romance sci-fi/fantasy horror/action spiritual/modern ect….

This is totally ridiculous. I am not a Serenity Fan, but even I know that they practically begged groups to form and promote the darn thing.

Okay, so they now want to protect their brand so that there is no erosion of their copyright in the future. Fair enough. But what would have been wrong with a letter from their lawyers thanking people for their loyality, but pointing out the copyright problems and asking them to now remove this or quit that.

That would have corrected their problem in a way that did not p*ss of the base.

I agree. πŸ˜€ The only horror in a Sci-fi movie or book should be the horror of what technology can/has/will do. Or perhaps the horror of where it will take us.

But many of the best sci-fi books don’t have any horror aspect at all.

10 – Logan’s Run – Didn’t age well, but pretty interesting in it’s day. Besides, years later I moved near the water feature that was at the end of the movies. I have been back several times and have pictures of theNeices arranged down it’s sides πŸ˜€

9- Blade Runner – While not a film to totally gladden a Phillip Dick fan, It looked, like I imagined it from the book “Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep”

8- Highlander – Had to love Sean Connery in this film. Also the money shot at the end in the warehouse.

7 – The 5th Element – You couldn’t make Bruce Willis under act if you held a gun to his head. Still it had lots of fun stuff and cool visuals. I loved Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) he was so in touch with his evil side. πŸ˜€

6 – Matrix – While the sequels went a bit over board in certain areas, the first movie was perfect with story, look and CGI.

5 – Demolition Man – Loved Bullock and Dennis Leary in this. πŸ˜€

4 – Dune (1984 Movie) – This had Frank Herbert’s seal of approval. It also had Sting in shiny blue wing undies, but I didn’t hold that against it. My only b*tch with the casting is that Jessica was not as beautiful as I though she should be. Other than that, I thought the casting was pretty spot on.

3 – Gattaca – Loved the look and the feel of the movie. And the whole genetics gone bad thing was very timely when it was first shown.

2 – Stargate – Another one with a killer look and an interesting premise. Still like re-watching it. The fist time I ever saw James Spader and didn’t want to throw something at the screen.

1 – Star Wars – The Original. (Luke, Hans, Leia, what was not to like? Spawned a major freaking franchise and totally blew me away. The only time I have ever been in a theater where the audience stood up and clapped when it was finished.

Well it was very nice as always. I got to see jkd112, Hedgehog, Kellen, Patrick Jevez, HDS and of course the divine Ms. Tabor. Sadly no Sarah or Mandara this year.

TheBrother was determined this year not to be caught in the usually Friday noon rush, so we arrived on Thursday afternoon. Sixish, after a sixteen hour drive. ;D Whooo, what fun. But it was a good thing. After showing my id to the Marriott Marquis’ clerk at the check in desk, said id was snatched out of my hand and theBrother took off to get our con badges. Leaving me to finish checking in and deal with a heavily over burdened hotel luggage cart and a very nice baby bellboy. Despite the lumber protruding from the cart promising potential peril to all the convention goers we passed, we quickly made it to our room.

Good thing too. The minute I tipped said luggage lugger, I speed hobbled down to the main convention floor to sign in for our Lexx Fan table. Even though the table check-in deadline was noon on Friday, quite a few of the good tables were gone. However, as luck would have it, I managed to find Ms. Tabor a few seconds before the Romulan group did. So as he danced impatiently, she let me study her map and pointed out the remaining tables. Central table. Last end cap. Wall behind it. By the Exhibition Hall doors. Yeah baby, prime table real estate. πŸ˜€ I bounced back up to my room and snagged my packing tape and a Lexx Flyer and taped it securely to the table so there would be no last minute mistakes.

Shortly afterward theBrother arrived with our badges and we went out for dinner. Which surprisingly enough was not as easy as it sounded. The Marriott was undergoing some construction that started about three weeks before we arrived so their skybridge area was closed for construction. We also found out that the alternate route would only be open until six the next day and then closed for the rest of the weekend. Who starts a major building project two weeks before a convention that draws 30,000 people? Ah, that would be the Marriott.

Apparently the only route to the Hyatt would involved leaving the cool of the hotel, fighting the vehicle traffic at the main entrance, crossing a busy street and going up about two flights of steep crowded stone stairs. As some of you may know, I finally killed the last of the cartilage in my left knee, so me slepping a heavy cart full of dvd’s and other Lexx loot up two flight of stairs Friday night was not going to happen. Not to worry. After pointing out a few failures to plan and expressing my joy at this turn of events to the right person, they gave me a call card for a hotel car. Yeah me. Chalk up another one for the powers of persuasive speech class.

Anyhow, Thursday night drew to a close. And lest you think I am totally down on the Marriott for the numerous bone headed things they did over the course of the convention, quite a few bone headed things actually. I have got to tell you, the beds were to die for. I found out later that they have added 4” down feather beds and duvets to their rooms. Now, I have some killer good mattresses at home, but these were heavenly. And yeah for me… they sell them on line. I think theSpouse will get a gift that keeps on giving this Christmas. If I can wait that long. And… I have found something for theFather who is fed up with fruitcakes, specialty jellys and aids for the hard of hearing. 

I only have a few picture, but this weekend, after I finish my inventory at work πŸ˜₯ I will finish this and post my pictures and a link to a lot more. Perhaps we can get jkd112 to pop up the ones he took also.

Inventory. Ugh. Pray for me πŸ˜›

Lexx at Dragon Con 2006 –
    Updated to remove changed information

The Lexx Fan Club USA has a fan table in the main lobby. Lexx fan’s who wants to do some serious people watching while helping man the table can send me their name and contact info to get on the roster. Contact info available here – > http://www.thefrey.com/UsCon.htm

Lexx Book Drawing – There will be a drawing for the proof books from Valdron’s Lexx Books. These are the books that are ordered to make sure that formatting, cover graphic placement and content is correct. They have been flipped and bent and had typo’s circled in them. However, scuffed though they may be, they have virtually every word of the final product.

You can enter the drawing in various ways. In fact you can enter numerous times depending on your activities Friday and Saturday. You can do a one time sign up, just by stopping at the Lexx Fan Club Booth and signing in on the “I was here roster”. Each time segment you work at the Lexx Fan Table on Friday or Saturday will get you an additional chance to win. Attending the Lexx Friday Night Track Panel will also get you an additional chance, as will showing up at the SFTV Track party which starts at 11:30 p.m. The more activities you participate in, the more chances you have to win one of the proof books. Schedule changes will adjust the give away, so you will want to check the Lexx Fan Club table for details. Look for the Lexx Balloons as a meet up point.

I think the reason sci-fi suffers from resorting to cheap special effect is that it needs too. Face it, your average soap-opera ish movie can make due with all most no special effect.

And so here comes Sci-fi, which often doesn’t have the budget to cover good effects. Three minutes of cheap special effects costs a TON more than three minutes of a bunch of guys playing pool as they brag about the ‘job’ they are about to pull.

I have decided to do a piece on Shockwave Rider. Not a new book, but it is a cautionary tale of what we might be looking at if they do not pass a few of the net neutrality laws currently bandied about.

News snip – The (cable) groups say the Federal Communications Commission must be given power to prevent broadband providers from doing things like charging content providers extra for the privilege of faster delivery or other preferential treatment.

Large broadband operators, such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, have argued that companies should have the option to pay to deliver content and services to end users, and that net neutrality laws would prevent operators from recouping the significant investments of their networks. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Book review Snip – This book has always been popular with the techy-geeky crowd, but, since it was first published in the ’70s, it missed out on the cyberpunk revolution of the ’80s. It’s too bad, because this is a compelling story of a future world tied together by a universal data network, a world that could be our tomorrow. It’s a tense place filled with information overload and corporate domination, and nearly everything is known about everybody. Except Nickie Haflinger, a prodigy whose talents allow him to switch identities with a phone call. Nickie plans to change the world, if only he can keep from getting caught. –This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Tidbit snip of the Techie Type – this is beleived to be the first reference to a computer tapeworm. Brunner is said to have invented the idea as well as the word.

Cover This is the worse one I have ever seen, but apparently it is the most current. – http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0345324315/ref=sib_dp_pt/103-9939878-4832651#reader-link
