ParticipantAh, finally! I was wondering when the subject of K-PAX was going to show up here on this bboard! Anyone ever see a Spanish film called, Man Facing Southeast? I have a feeling it’s the same story.

ParticipantI have a theory about JarJar and a very good reason he might have been placed in the Star Wars films.
Many, many people are annoyed by him. But a few like him, think he’s funny. I’ve often joked with my friends that it’d be funny if JarJar had a lightsaber accident!
Since Episode II is going to be released soon, my friends and I have been theorizing about what sort of things Anakin would do to turn towards the dark side.
Then it hit me. Anakin kills JarJar! It makes perfect sense when you think about it. We got to like little Anakin in Episode I, but we can tell there’s something amiss. Maybe by accident or out of anger (my vote), Anakin kills JarJar and horrifies the audience. “Why did he have to kill poor JarJar! Boo-hoo!”. There would be no doubt that Anakin is an evil b@stard! It would be so tragic!
Or maybe it’s just my wishful thinking.

ParticipantI wish I knew more about Buffy. I turned my nose up at that show at the start of the series. I thought it was a cheesey idea. But then recently I hear that it is actually a well-written show. I’ll be watching it on WB right before Enterprise.

I agree. Apples and oranges. But I don’t believe that Lexx is a rip-off of Star Wars or Star Trek or anything else. The genre of space-opera will become mundane in ages to come anyway. I mean, the human race will explore and colonize space, right? Remember when the movie War Games was scary and new? Now hacking is a cliche as seen in re-runs of USA’s La Femme Nikita! What I’m getting at is that the idea of a trio as the crew of a spaceship might be a story that is regarded as a rip-off of NASA’s apollo program. Who can tell?

ParticipantI think this calls for another song here at the X Farewell Festival.
(…a one, and a two, and a three….)Take a piece of tinsel and put it on the tree
Cut a slab of melon and pretend
that you still love me
Carve out a pumpkin and rely on your destiny
Get in your car and cruise the land
of the brave and the freeBut don’t forget to understand exactly what
you put on the tree
Don’t believe the florist when he tells you that
the roses are freeTake a wrinkled raisin, and do with it what you will
Push it into third if you know you’re gonna
climb a hill
Eat plenty of lasagna ’til you know
that you’ve had your fill
Resist all the urges that make you wanna
go out and killBut don’t forget to understand exactly what
you put on the tree
Don’t believe the florist when he tells you that
the roses are freeThrow that pumpkin at the tree
Unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny
Cast it off into the sea, bake that pie
and eat it with me

Rat in a drain ditch
Caught on a limb
You know better but
I know him
Like I told you
What I said
Steal your face
right off your headNow he’s Gone
Lord he’s gone
Like a steam locomotive
rolling down the track
He’s gone
He’s gone
and nothing’s gonna bring him back
He’s goneNine mile skid
on a ten mile ride
Hot as a pistol
but cool inside
Cat on a tin roof
Dogs in a pile
Nothing left to do but
smile, smile, smile Now he’s gone
Lord he’s gone
Like a steam locomotive
rolling down the track
He’s gone
He’s gone
and nothing’s gonna bring him back
He’s goneGoing where the wind don’t blow so strange
Maybe on some high cold mountain range
Lost one round but the price wasn’t anything
Knife in a back and more of the same
Same old rat in a drain ditch
Out on a limb
You know better but I know himNow he’s gone
Lord he’s gone
Like a steam locomotive
rolling down the track
He’s gone
He’s gone
and nothin’s gonna bring him back
He’s gone….Get the idea, folks?

But, as it turns out, SciFi would have paid for a fifth (or maybe even a sixth?) season of Lexx. The truth is that the show’s creators no longer wished to continue the show after the fourth season.

This is a very, very good point.

(link here for those unfamiliar…Evil Overlord List) The obvious continuity errors, the counsel of talking (and all too often whining) evil brains… Lexx exposes the conventions of space opera in order to demolish them (and at the same time, somehow manages to be gripping and moving in between the laughs).
Peter’s list was hilarious! Thanxx for post a link to it! If I ever get around to writing that space-opera movie script, I’ll adhere to it’s teachings as holy scripture!
I had almost forgotten, but the satire of space-opera that Lexx presents was one of the big reasons i became interested in the show. It made me take notice of it and realize that it wasn’t “just another space-opera.”

You are right. The stories and plots of the Star Wars movies are standard. These standards of the “hero and his quest” dates back to Gilgamesh and beyond. But Star Wars accomplished this story-telling feat very well. Countless other movies have failed miserably. (e.g. The Final Sacrifice) If any one of Peter’s Overlord rules were adhered to in a Star Wars movie, I would be disappointed!

ParticipantI don’t have anything substantial to add to the main subject of this thread. All I want to do is to reiterate what FX said about an actor’s “drinking problem” (or whatever the problem was). It’s really none of our business. Especially since it didn’t seem to interfere with the production of the show or cause any legal trouble. The production of the show is over and we need not be concerned with the personal affairs of others.
At the risk of getting even more off-topic, I wanted to relate a recent experience I had at another bboard. Since SadGeezer was down for the last week, I decided to cruise for another bboard. Since I liked watching the season premier of Ally McBeal (after not watching the show for maybe more than a year) I wondered if there was a bboard dedicated to that show. There was. I was stunned by the truly fanatical obsession of the bboard members. And I thought that Trekkers were crazy! They were all upset that this new season of the show was really lame. And that they all really missed the presence of Robert Downey Jr. on that show. For those of you who aren’t familiar with RDJ (as he is called on that bboard), he is an actor who is notorious for getting into trouble with drug abuse. I blithely commented that “he f***ed up and he got fired from the show, what did they expect?” And the hammer came down on me because I instantly got into trouble with a bunch of fans on that site! Oops! I didn’t really mean to get those fans upset. It turns out that RDJ was very, very popular on Ally McBeal. A very touchy subject indeed. I apologized extensively and talked a little about my first-hand experiences with a friend’s drug problem. Everything turned out okay.
Anyway, the point I was trying to make was that problems with temperance are private. It is of no real concern to fans unless it affects the performance of the actor (singer, artist, whatever). In the case of RDJ on Ally McBeal, I still think he f***ed up and deserved getting fired. With whoever it is in the cast or crew of Lexx that had their problems, I don’t really want to know. At least not now. Maybe many years from now when that person can look back and laugh about it.
But I have to admit I was concerned about initial reports from one of the moderators that Xenia seemed really ill while on the set during the final days of production. This set off paranoid alarm bells in my head that maybe she has problems with drugs or alcohol! But I asked nothing about it, it’s not my business. Nonetheless, I was still worried. It’s a good thing I didn’t start any rumors because it’s NOT TRUE AT ALL (rumor control, folks!) I read the full report by the moderators and I was relieved to read the truth. Xenia just had the flu and even her mummy was there to help take care of her. (I thought that was so sweet!) She still had the energy to perform and even give a smile to theFrey! (I’m so green with envy!)

ParticipantI have a copy of The Hidden Fortress and The Seven Samuri on laserdisc. (Nope, not DVD! Laserdisc!) I can say, with confidence, that The Hidden Fortress is so similar to A New Hope that it can be called a “rip-off”. But not in a negative way. The Magnificent Seven is an even more blatant rip-off of The Seven Samuri.
For A New Hope to be an homage, The Hidden Fortress would have to be well-known in America. That Japanese film wasn’t and probably still isn’t well-known in non-Japanese pop culture.
But never fear. Many popular film makers (including ILM, I believe) put their skills at the disposal of that great film director to make Akira Kurasawa’s Dreams, a very good film. This was a formal acknowledgement of Kurasawa’s influence upon Hollywood.
As a footnote, watch A New Hope again. Listen closely to one of the scenes in the Death Star confrence room. One of the officers scoffs Vader, pointing out that his jedi mysticism hasn’t helped to “find the rebel’s hidden fortress.”

It was pretty clear to me that the vast majority of posts were fanfic posts. I think it’s a nuisance, especially on a crude bboard like they have there. Thread subjects quickly get swallowed up and disappear as they scroll away into oblivion. But I’m not saying they should stop writing fanfic. I think they should start their own separate bboard devoted to Lexx fanfic. But posting six threads in a row devoted to one fanfic story is absolutely rude on that SciFi bboard. And telling them to go away is also rude and therefore out of the question.

I guess that’s generally what I was trying to say, too. But it’s up to Michael and no one else about what he wants to do with the whole Lexx thing now that it’s all over. And you know what? After stating my opinion about the subject in my post above, I really don’t want to add anymore to the subject. But I remain silently curious.
On a lighter note, I’m very eager to find out about the future of all the people involved with the production of Lexx. In particular, I want to know more about Paul’s idea for a show taking place in Renaisance Italy! CGI sets really work because Lexx and The Phantom Menace prove it (among others). I want to see more of Brian and I can’t get enough of gorgeous Xenia!

ParticipantI just got finished reading the account of the trip! Boy, am I jealous! I wish I could have come along. Myself, I would have spent alot of time hanging out with the CGI guys. (Me being computer-generated an’ all… )
But I want to say something about the… thing with Michael McManus. None of it suprises me. I grew up in the theater, surrounded by actors and their personal soap-operas, etc. (My mother was a theater director. I declined to pursue the stage arts in favor of the visual arts.) I’ve seen this kind of thing before. Sometimes one of the stars is perceived as “stuck-up” or “full of themselves”. I firmly beleive that it is their perogative to be that way. If they do a good job, fine– give them a wide berth. Being Mr. Wonderful to the fans is not part of the job description. Knowing your character, remembering your lines, and executing the instructions of the director is what the job is all about.
Also, consider the part he plays. Kai is a completely stoical, emotionless character. I would think it unwise to be chumy and crack jokes on the set. It would make it difficult to get into character. (Though I would love to see a blooper reel of Kai falling out of character and bursting into laughter!)
And that bit with the fight scene in the cage with the camera shot from behind and between his legs. The exchange you guys witnessed didn’t sound out of the ordinary at all. A director can have all sorts of ideas for camera shots on paper. But when you are there on the set with the actors, things don’t always work as well as planned. The actor is the one who knows best about how they will look on stage or screen. If they didn’t have that sort of self-awareness, they wouldn’t be very good actors. In fact, I think it’s commendable that Michael McManus cares so much about his character, Kai.
If I could sit down and converse with Michael (which ain’t gonna happen, I know), I’d tell him a few words of advice. I would say, “Follow the example of Patrick (Capt. Picard) Stuart. He doesn’t usually have much contact with fans. Maybe you should seek his advice about how he deals with Trek fandom. On the other extreme is the gregarious Marina (Deanna Troi) Sirtis who loves to go to conventions. Maybe you should ask her why the hell she does it. But most of all, Michael, you should drop any pre-conceived notions of the type of people who constitute fandom. Of course, there are plenty of geeks! But these outlandish shows and movies that fans watch inspire them to be writers, artists, actors, scientists, engineers, doctors, and much more. You can’t say that about either Baywatch or I, Claudius. I’m not going to tell you what to expect if you decide to make an appearance at a convention. You need to obtain advice from other actors who have done it plenty of times. All I can say is that if you are interested in raising money for any charity of your choice, you should do it.”
But then again, maybe he’s just an @ssh*le!

ParticipantWell, we could have a morality police force like they do in some muslim countries. I used to think it was just a joke from a Monty Python sketch (“the Church Police”). But it turns out the some countries like Saudi Arabia have morality policemen patrol public place, looking out for deviant behaviour. The Taliban has taken it to extremes, as you may have seen in the news lately. They use football stadiums for public executions. Offences include adultery, promiscuity, and homosexuality.
Is this what we want? Hell, no! Institutions of morality must not have legal enforcement powers. Church and State do not mix. The Taliban represents the most extreme form of this mixture.
So we can’t force morality on people. What do you suggest we do?

ParticipantI recommend the viewing of D. W. Griffith’s silent movie, Intolerance, to anyone who is interested.
For now, I’m sticking to the axiom, ”The people who *can’t* get laid are always the ones yelling loudest that those who *do* get laid are immoral.” Thanxx, Aleck!

Most likely people saw this site and figured “why bother?” as it is top notch.
Cool! It’s a good-looking site! I’ve never seen it before. But, no, it won’t stop me from maintaining my own Xev site. Burntime has created a top-notch site with all sorts of info about Xenia. There are also plenty of non-Xev Xenia pics, too.
My own site is simple and to-the-point: pics of Xev and nothing else. I set it up for simple archival purposes only. There’s always a chance that any given picture archive website will go down for good. I’ll maintain it for as long as I own Flamegrape.com.
I will, of course, put a link on my Xev page to his(her?) webpage. I’ll also contact him about where and how he got his images. I have no desire to steal someone’s thunder. All I want to do is maintain a simple pic archive. I should probably add a disclaimer stating that I created none of the scans, that I downloaded them all from the internet.
