Iceland, the land of fire and ice, is a weird place. Have you ever seen Björk? She’s the weirdest of them all! (And I worship her, too!) Have you seen her latest video, Coccoon? Someone posted a link to it here on SadBoard. She looks like a Brunnen-G, with the black bun hair style!
Anyway, someday I want to spend some time exploring Iceland. I want to check out the fissures, the glaciers, volcanos, hot springs, etc.
Björk did another song called Joga. The video for it featured animated Icelandic land masses grinding away. It’s one of my favorites.

ParticipantI guess I’m lucky since I’ve never felt compelled to paint any of my lead miniatures. The primer-gray color is fine for me. I used to have a few dozen miniatures (including a dragon) but I gave them away to some dumb girl because I thought I’d never want to play D&D again. Now I have a renewed interest because of the the third edition rules.
Okay, I have to get something straight right now! What exactly do you mean by 3e? Third Edition? THAC0 is an easy way to handle combat, compared to the old cumbersome charts. And what’s d20? A different set or rules? The old rules? I know that a d20 is a twenty-sided die, and now that you mention it, I’ve seen rulebooks in the store with “d20” in the title. Can you explain the difference?
I still have and still use my ancient DM screens, even though the rules written on them aren’t used anymore! It has cool artwork.
Have you heard of The Knights of the Dinner Table and the game they play, Hackmaster?
Oh, and since it’s now common knowledge that we play D&D, let’s be sure to worship Satan and re-enact our game fantasies in the local sewers to cover up our secret homosexuality.

The basic format has not changed. Only the rules have been streamlined. As was the case 20 years ago, D&D is still all about dungeon-crawling. However, many gamers opt to dispense with maps altogether and focus entirely on role-playing and drama. After years of playing without maps, I’ve decided that it’s much more fun and engaging to have maps and even lead miniatures, if possible.
Recently I took some D&D-newbie friends through a 1st-level dungeon. And yes, it’s still about marching order, what weapons are ready in-hand, what spells are prepared, etc. There are only subtle, common-sense changes in the game since 20 years ago. You don’t have to kill monsters to gain experience. If you just out-wit them or succeed getting past them to accomplish your goal, you can still get experience. Using the third-edition rules, you can still play the exact same games you played 20 years ago. You just don’t have to stop the game as often to look up rules.
Flamegrape
ParticipantSmartass2002, whatever that was you were playing, it wasn’t Dungeons & Dragons published by Wizards of the Coast (and previously published by TSR). That did not sound like anything I’ve ever played in an any D&D game for the 20 years I’ve played the game.
Sure, you had fun. But doing all of those extremely bizzare and fantastic things and obtaining all of those unusual powers is not something you do when you are a novice character. Otherwise, there is nothing for you to strive for in the game and you are entirely dependant on whatever the DM can dream up… and that fountain can run dry very quickly playing the way you guys played.
Let me put it to you another way. If you attempt to play D&D with another dungeon master, you will be completely lost. Do the terms “AC” or “HP” mean anything to you? If not, you’ll have to pick up a rulebook and read it.
The modern third-edition rules are very good. Much more streamlined than the first two editions. The best way to learn how to play D&D these days is to purchase the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Game for only $10.
But unfortunately, your experience with the game has been permanently jaded and I’m afraid you’ll have no interest in playing around with normal, humanoid, medeval, first-level characters that can only swing a sword or cast one spell at a time.
I’m sorry your experience with D&D has been ruined forever.

ParticipantIsn’t SciFi going to make another Dune miniseries? It’s supposed to be based on the second and third Dune books. I vote they stick with it and produce the awesome God Emporer of Dune.
That reminds me. I really wish that people would construct a bowl-shaped city in some valley. Every building would have a perfect view of a raised platform in the center. And every five years I would visit the city and address all of the visiting pilgrims who behold my glorious person, dictating my philosophy and religeous dogma. That’s all I ask! Sheesh! I mean, c’mon! Is that so wrong?

ParticipantThe Brunnen-G had extensive knowledge of trans-dimension travel. Interesting. They originated in the Dark Zone universe and migrated to the Light Zone universe. Why? There sun was unstable but why not just find a new planet elsewhere in the Dark Zone universe? Why travel to a completely different dimension? What were they attempting to get away from?
Once the Brunnen-G settled in the Light Zone universe, they wound up fighting a great war with the Insect Civilization. As it turned out, His Divine Shadow was a remnant of the Insects (as seen in 1.4 Gigashadow). But as seen in 4.18 The Game, His Shadow and Vlad along with Priest, Bunny, and the ATF, are merely pawns in Prince’s game.
On the other hand, the connections between the black playing pieces and Kai are clear. Although it makes sense to have the Time Prophet associated with Kai, it seems to me that Lyekka would have made more sense as Kai’s black bishops. As has been pointed out, Anna Cameron played the part of both the Time Prophet and Vlad. Maybe they faced each other off as bishops because they are the same person?
Questions, questions….

The Brunnen-G seemed to have known a great deal about travelling to other dimensions. Very curious.
How long has Prince existed? Could it be that Prince is much older than His Divine Shadow, the Gigashadow, and the Insect Civilization itself?
JJ, if I understand your time-loop theory about Lexx’s plotline, you believe that Prince will become the Insect Civilization (His Divine Shadow) and that the people of Earth will become the Brunnen-G.
Couldn’t it just as well be that the Insects were somehow the product of Prince’s mischief in the distant past? I mean, why was His Divine Shadow in The Game at all? What does Prince know of His Shadow? What does prince care about him? The Game “mirrors the larger game we
have played since we have met”, Prince commented. How did His Shadow fit into Prince’s plots and plans? All of the white pieces were characters that appeared in series III or IV… except for His Divine Shadow. In The Game, where was Lyekka? Why wasn’t she the bishop, the most appropriate piece to represent her? Lyekka has been on the show far more often than the Time Prophet. She’s one of the good guys… right?
Something else to think about: insects are an integral part of most plant’s reproduction.

ParticipantThe last role-playing game I’ve played is one called GURPS, which stands for “Generic Universal Role-Playing System”. The game rules are simple and allow for anachronism of any kind.
My character was a stripper from Atlanta. Aside from pleasing men, her skills included kung-fu and telepathy. She gets caught up in a secret government plot involving a crashed UFO in Stone Mountain, Georgia. (As usual with the group of people I was playing with, the story was never concluded. This was many years ago.)
I seldom encounter anyone with the time or patience to play any role-playing games anymore.

ParticipantI’ve been wondering for a while if the carrot probes come from Lyekka’s plant civilization. The main reason I’ve been thinking in that direction is because of the continuing presence of the carrot probes and the fact that one of the last episodes is named, “Lyekka vs Japan”!

ParticipantAll these people I encountered who loved The Matrix puzzled me. They were all astounded by the story and special effects. I sort of look at them blankly and say, “Uh, yeah. I think Western culture is finally starting to maybe somehow get their brains in gear and catch up to the rest of us geeks. Star Trek, the Internet, and The Matrix are indicators of this kind of change.

ParticipantFirst of all, don’t get me wrong. I like Trek. I watch the new episodes of Enterprise because I’ve always thought that Scott Bakula was a great choice for the role of captain.
B5 had intense drama. D9 (and all the other Trek shows for that matter) have been dry and wooden.
I always felt that B5 was more realistic in it’s portrayal of the future. Trek’s vision of a utopian future devoid of starvation, poverty, and religeon is wonderful but it just plain ain’t gonna happen! Even when there is limitless resources and the nature of the universe is known, there will still be fundamentalist religious nuts who want to tell you how to live your life! Sure, the Federation encounters other races with their kooky arcane religions. But what happend to all the muslims, buddhists, christians, jews, sihks, taoists, hindus, and shintoists? One thing for damned sure is that muslims, christians, and jews are not going to vanish in a few hundred years!
Flamegrape
ParticipantWhere do you live? In a number of countries, Star Trek is not as popular as it is in the United States. For example, I encountered one person from Portugal who stated that Space:1999 was far more popular than Star Trek. He said that Trek was “too american”.
The Borg are an insane race of ski fanatics from Scandinavia.

ParticipantI had been told that JMS pitched the B5 idea to Paramount but was turned down. Then shortly afterwards Paramount comes up with a new idea for a Star Trek show called Deep Space 9.
I respectfully disagree. Being a trekker, I was sickened that they plagarized a good idea. It seems so crystal clear to me. Then the Trek people had the gall to attempt an ongoing story arc just like B5 was doing. They even had a character named Leeta (Lyta), for crissakes!

If I were writing the reviews, I would invariably comment about to what degree Xev deserves a spanking. In fact, I think I would have used that as my rating system… on a scale of 1 to 10 Xev spankings.
The point about grammer is valid, I think. But what you think of an episode is your perogative. It’s your website.

ParticipantYes, I have been following your advice since I first saw the show. I don’t like it so I don’t watch it. Sometimes I try to watch it but it is so unappealing to me that I have to change the channel. I really don’t think it’s very good. Sorry.
But also keep in mind that I’m not a serious connoisseur of superhero comics. I tend to think they are silly and I’m not known for collecting them. (My current favorite comic is Transmetropolitan. Spider Jeruselem rocks!) I’ve only collected a few superhero comics in recent memory. One was Ghost (published by Darkhorse, recently cancelled) and another was Cloak & Dagger (published by Marvel, cancelled in the 1980s). And those titles were not very popular so I guess that doesn’t make me an expert of superhero comics. On occasion I might pick up a Wonder Woman or Batgirl comic… anything featuring female superheros.
Oh, I almost forgot. I do collect superhero comic these days. Two, I think.
One superhero comic I collect is called Rising Stars and it’s written by Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski. It’s a realistic look at superheroes and how they would really be treated. (Something like Watchmen. When is Alan Moore’s classic going to be turned into a movie?!?) I’ve been able to collect most of the issues. It’s very well-written. But this is the extreme exception. It frequently breaks the comicbook rule of minimal dialogue on any given page.
The other superhero comic I collect is Tomb Raider. I suppose Lara Croft can be considered a superhero even though she doesn’t have “superpowers”. But then again, neither does Batman. I read Tomb Raider because I loved all of the videogames. And she has big boobs. But I’d be the first to admit that the writing isn’t very good.
Most superhero comics are crap, IMHO. Well-written comics are hard to find. You might hope that only the cream of comicbook literature would be performed on live-action (non-cartoon) television, but this has never(?) been the case.
