ParticipanttheFather who of course came late to computing had a love hate relationship with them.
He was constantly messing his up, making his tool bar disappear, or changing his settings somehow. (hey, I never touched the thing, it just doesn’t work now.) He also had a program which use to save a game he was playing every five minutes in a new file. Needless to say after a few months of constant play, his hard drive would be packed. We wiped and reloaded his first system about three times.
Now mind you, he could care less about computers and didn’t care if he ever saw one again.
Once when his comp needed reloaded to clean it out and fix the accumulated errors I was out of pocket for a week or so. No prob he says. But after about 10 days I got a call from theBrother…. Who suggested that I stop what I was doing and come fix the darn thing.
It seems that since it didn’t work, theFather decided it needed tossed and so he disconnected it, wrapped all the cords neatly, and set it beside the trash in the kitchen. This was a bit surprising for a guy who could care less, and even more surprising to theBrother since it was his spare computer and did not belong to theFather. 🙂
I did get it back up again before trash day, and theFather went on to torture it for a couple more years before it died for good.

*snicker* Yes exactly. ;D Thanks. ;D
Also the button is looking good. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I read left to right and I tend to STOP immediately when I see what I am looking for. So the right side was not a good for me.

Best of course to New Kate, long may she have that affect. 😀

Participant
Pet: The going rate for banner ads at the moment is peanuts per 10,000 views. Most look for a click through ratio also. The site wouldn’t generate much money from banners I’m afraid. :)
Who cares about the going rate, and click through pricing? I am sure a lot of the Sci-fi peeps who have their own sites would pop $10.00 a month to have their banner rotate on your site. I know I was totaly stroked when mine made it up there! (Nag? Who nagged? Me? Surely not? 😛 ) I was so excited I took screen shots of it. 😀
I am pretty sure you could get five or six a month and a waiting list to boot. 😀

ParticipantHey Mok, did you see the where Ms. W’s and hubby’s Resturant in Toronto is due to open in May? It is called Chehoski. I checked, but no web site yet.
I wonder if it will have bands, and if so will Ms. W play there much?

ParticipantThere is a donation button on the right hand side, about half way down. I think it should be on the top, but that is just me. Anyhow, this donation button is for a set amount, I think it was $3.00 last time I used it.
Me? I just go to paypal.com and make a transfer to donations@sadgeezer.com and then I can type in any amount I like. (I am ususally a 25.00 a pop girl) You don’t even have to have a paypal account, since they will do a credit card payment transfer.

Participant
Actually, I was only talking about off shore outsourcing; domestic employment is each nation’s concern.
Globalization affects us all, this was the topic of choice at an event I attended one week ago:

The globalization topic was actually a discussion the speaker (Consul General of Trinidad And Tobago – and also my cousin) had with the Vice President of Venezuela. Other officials and an ambassador were their and many of the discussions mirror what is being said here…..interesting to see other sides…..
Well Maurice, unless you rework this post on your site in a hurry, I did not see a whole lot on it to contribute to this particular post. You spent as much time telling us about the attendees, quality of the snacks and the steel drum as you did about the main topic.
Possibly more than two sentences that brush upon the topics of globalization and service orientation might be necessary, if this was to be a look at this convo from another countries view point.
theFrey
ParticipantOh, don’t bother with him Pet. If we were discussing the creation of ice cream flavors to go in those push carts of yours Maurice would have still pulled that card.
Since there is out sourcing going to the Glenda’s in Scotland, the Ille’s in Romainia and Boris’ in Russia I don’t think it is a skin color thing. It has to do with business taking advantage of under utilized skills in areas where wages are depressed for whatever reason. If they can also find an area without those pesky labor laws, then so much the better.
Business is trying to bring wages and labor rights down to third world levels. If they can operate their factories and research in area of the world with low wages and no worker rights without encouring the wrath of their customers they are happy campers. If in the process they can erode or elimate those rights in the West then big bonus points!
However, I suspect some upheaval may be in the works since the persons currently being displaced are not longer just working stiffs in the factories but people that the Republican actually keep an eye on.

Participant
Are we all going to revolt, become luddites, or devolutionists? It seems that the biggest problems are in the places with the biggest spenders. It’s like western companies are shooting themselves in the head! The more they give away jobs abroad, the less peeps have to spend on their products.
Actually, any goverment has the power to set the ground rules it wants for business that operate within it borders. Unfortunately, we are currently have a party in place in the US that doesnot have the best interests of the majority of their citizens at heart. I don’t know what is going on in the UK on this matter, but as I said eariler, the Canadians I met last weekend also have reservations about their current goverment allowing simular programs.
theFrey
ParticipantAs I said the other night, I was watching Lou Dobbs on CNN, and one of the guest columnists he had was pretty interesting. He had this to say.
Cost reductions and other benefits provide a strong incentive to outsource jobs. A company that decides to move its production overseas cuts its costs in many ways, including the following:
Extremely low wage rates
The circumvention or avoidance of organized labor
No Social Security or Medicare benefit payments
No federal or state unemployment tax
No health benefits for workers
No child labor laws
No OSHA or EPA costs or restrictions
No worker retirement benefits or pension costs
Besides cutting costs, there are other benefits to exporting jobs, including the following:
Tax incentives provided by our government
Incentives from foreign governments
The creation of new international markets for the company’s products (which ultimately empowers the company to turn a deaf ear to this country’s problems and influence)
The continued benefits of our legal system and the freedoms that we provide
The net effect of all of this is lower costs, higher revenue, higher profits, higher stock prices, bonuses for management, and the creation of wealth for a subclass that benefits from low taxes at the expense of the rest of us. – Rory L. Terry, an associate professor of finance at Fort Hays State University
http://money.cnn.com/2004/03/11/commentary/dobbs/dobbs/index.htm
Basically his argument is that the business making the decision reaps the benefits with out paying the full cost. Not unlike chemical companies who use to think that washing stuff down stream was a cost effective way of getting rid of waste.
theFrey
ParticipantWell, yes. Thank you for sharing.
theFrey
ParticipantNope, seems pretty on topic to me.

ParticipantFrom last June? Oh, you mean on the forum listing? Hummm, well don’t forget that Sad’s has dozens of forums, instead of just one. Therefore the action takes place in many different locations and the OT stuff does not push the on topic stuff into the abyss as fast as happens in other places. The best place to go to see what is new and has posted recently is the home page.
theFrey
ParticipantReally Mok, you ask the question, get an answer less than an hour later and then say there is no action here? My darlin’ how fast did you want that answer? 😀

ParticipantWell none of them are currently doing any cons, and most likely won’t until they can find a convention manager to arrange and fund them.
But…. having said that, I will say that Ms. W. had to go through extraordinary scheduling efforts every time she appeared at a convention. She acts (in several countries) sings, has an import business and she and her husband have been working on opening a club in Toronto. That she made it to DC was a minor miracle of scheduling. If I am not mistaken she was at an awards show until very late the evening before. She is a busy, busy lady.

ParticipantNormally if I am sending people attachments, I also send them an email without an attachment telling them that I sent one. I also tell them what the attachment is, so if they get something they are not expecting, they can be suspicious.
Once in a while, I get an attachment I wasn’t expecting. Then I email them and ask, “Hey! whats up?” I do this BEFORE I open the attachment.

ParticipantA few of my co-workers (catholic and non) went to see it. One of them who is a major movie hound said she would not willing watch it again. It was too gory and depressing.
From listening to the reviews, I pretty much got that and had no intention of going to see it. I DO NOT pay money to depress myself. I can do that for free if I want to.
Aleck said he might watch it at home free on cable when it makes it there…. I most likely will only ever see snatches of it as I go to turn off the television when theSpouse falls asleep watching TV.
While I can understand that some film makers might want to do an epic kind of signature movie with gritty realism ect…. I totally, totally do not understand people paying money to upset themselves at the movies. Weird… 😕

ParticipantWe once again have a fan table at Dragon*Con 2004. It will be in the lobby of the Marriott Marquise the one you have to pass through to get to the exhibit hall, art show, and the esclators going down to the dealers room.
This year the Lexx Fan Club USA will host a tribute to Sadgeezer.com at DC2004. Sad’s Cult Tv site has been an enormous resource for the entire Lexx community for years, and we are proud to assist them in their DragonCon debut… and who knows, perhaps we can talk Tony and New Kate to attend.
Let the nagging begin.
theFrey
ParticipantJust so there is no confusion.
There is presently NO cast involvement in DragonCon 2004, nor has there been any indication that there is even a remote chance that there might be. So we be on our own this year people. Bummer, yes. But such is life until they get a new convention manager.
Although….. I did put a bug in Ellen Dubin’s ear as DC2004 takes place just before her show is suppose to show in the states… So perhaps her production company will take the hint.

ParticipantXenia did get married at the Ponderosa Ranch (of Bonanza fame) at Lake Tahoe, apparently right after last years Las Vegas convention. Her spouse Sven Martinek is pretty popular in Germany and they even had some press following them around right afterwards firing all the info back to Germany. They became close while working on a film.
Shortly after that she notified people of her car accident in the LA area. Possibly not all celebrities are alive to the fact of how much information is public domain in the United States. Accident information especially. So there was a bit of speculation that this was in fact an excuse to return to Germany with the new spouse (understandable) and skip DragonCon. However, this is not for me to say, as I was not one of the curious people who looked into it. 😀
As for the website, Dr. Bell’s people stated that the billing for her web site went to the wrong address and it was going to be corrected soon. Of course that was a right after Christmas…. but perhaps they are on California time. 😆
Oh, and I get my scoops from the silverware drawer in the kitchen. 😉

ParticipantSounds like a winner. I have seen some good contests where everyone was given a outline or list of characters and they had to come up with a story to fit those people or that action.
theFrey
ParticipantAny news on this Sad? Anything we can do to asisst?
theFrey
ParticipantI agree about the people with the deep imagination being the directors and the writers, but I would add the set designers to that mix. I was always in love with the visuals of Lexx. That is what originally attracted me to the show. My first Lexx visual was S3 Battle. Whooooo. Then original movies hooked me in with their gritty far future difference, and my favorite visual was Stan and the kid pinned to the wall like butterflys in S4. It took some twisted deep thought to come up with that stuff. 🙂 And we liked it 😀
Mr. Kaines (preist) once pointed out that there is a difference in the way people in different countries approach acting. And the following is all my words trying to explain what he conveyed to me. 🙂
In some countries it is regarded as more of a job and a craft. The people that go into it, regard it and the attendant duties as just that, a job that they enjoy, that must be worked at. While other countries have people who look at it as more of an artistic calling thing. Which is good, because you get the truly off the wall brilliance that artists can bring to their work. But the down side of that is that those people are perhaps not the stablest over the long haul. There are exceptions of course, who can marry the brilliance to the stability of the long slog, but they are not the norm.
And finally I wonder how hard would it be to go from a job working with your friends, who will often defer to your artistic wishes (as friends do) in a job you know spot on, in a enviroment that lets you exert some control over the other crafts affecting you…. To that of a theater or a show, where such behavior would be regarded unfavorably by the director and others, who expect actors to act and not waste time or interfere with the other crafts.
theFrey
ParticipantWell I am not sure that anyone beside Mr. Downey has talked to him lately.
It has been a few months since last I spoke with him and at that time he was cleaning out his basement which was flooded by some winter storms. Which was a bit of a bummer for him, since he was still recovering from the health problems that threw the monkey wrench into the DC arrangements.
As Valdron pointed out on the Sci-fi board, this is not Mr. Lowe’s main gig. He has a full time job, and does this as a hobby of sorts. A very expensive hobby, since before the first person enters a con, the pictures must be paid for, the plane tickets bought, the cabs paid for, and the hotel rooms rented…..
Possibly the only people that can answer your question are Mr. Downey and Mr. Lowe. Have balls been dropped causing last minute problems for the cast and fans? Oh yeah. Why have they been dropped? Who knows? It could be a number of reasons, health, finances, family problems, real life difficulties or just not taking care of business. I suspect that the reason may be a combination of several reasons.
What is known, is how stressful this is for the cast, the fans, and the convention staff. So this is indeed a major bummer.
Hopefully the cast will be able to find another convention manager. And hopefully jkd112 will find something to hang with in Orlando. 😀
theFrey
ParticipantCongrats Pet. Glad to see you are keeping buzy. Idle hands…. ya know. 😀
theFrey
ParticipantMega Con is a No-Go. Mr. Downey states that they are severing relations with Mr. Lowe and unfortunately this occurs too late to get something else going for Mega Con. 🙁
Mr. D did say that they might have some other stuff going on later in the year, and they will of course notify us of that.
theFrey
ParticipantAwww, poor Tony. I sent a small donation to the sever fund to help with the transfer costs.
I find that if I use paypal directly and send it to the email of donations@sadgeezer.com I can donate in higher amounts than just the $3.00 button on the site. ;D That way you save the multiple hit on each donation.
Please let us know if there is something else we can do to help.

ParticipantDragon Con 2004? What can I say, miss it at your peril. The thing is huge, it is so hotel California you can’t believe it. You get there and you can’t leave. There is literally something going on every minute that you will want to see. Heck the people watching alone is worth the price of admission. The exhibition hall is huge, the art gallery is great and will have lots of people you know there as well as some very talented up and comers, and the dealers room has just about everything a fan could want.
Is it worth a trans-Atlantic trip? You betcha, especially if you have a group of friends to enjoy it with. 😀 Me, already got the hotel ressies and plane tickets. In fact, with the date being September 3 thru 6th this year, I think I will celebrate my birthday a few days early this year at DC! ;D
You may want to tip toe though the Lexx Convention forum for some back groud information on the con.
