I think the opposite of Stan would be Kai: he is brave and virtuous

Kai isn’t virtuous. He’s dead. So naturally, he doesn’t want sex.

This isn’t particularly gross, so much as it is funny.

One of our most popular instructors took a week’s vacation, so the secretaries in the office decided to have a little fun. They taped the outline of a body on his office floor, and criss-crossed his door with yellow caution tape, so when he came back, his office looked like the scene of a murder.

He was afraid to go in.

Um… I know you’re all discussing dress code, but I gotta tell you, my feet won’t fit in those spiked heel thingies anymore.

I think I can find a cow big enough for the leather miniskirt, and I know where to get a really cool whip for not a lot of money, but please, can’t we make an exception for the shoes? Like, combat boots, or steelworker’s boots are *really* good for stomping you know, and they’re roomy.

On the contrary. It’s not crap at all. It’s very imaginative, and I hope you’ll continue it.

I especially like the originality you showed in character names. I’m so tired of alien names that always have an apostrophe or three stuck between syllables.

    Kewl! What was his name?

His name is Barry James, and he has red hair just about Brian Downey’s color. His singing voice is baritone (sound familiar?) and his personality on stage is utterly charming. Lest anyone think I have the hots for him, he’s a senior in the College of Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, which makes him younger than my children. But his resumé is quite extensive and I expect big things from him.

My week went how they always go.

However, on Saturday I spent some time at my son’s house participating in that awful ritual known as “the four year old’s birthday party” — gah!

It got better though. I had to be in Cincinnati by 5:00, so I had an excuse to leave early (I love them all dearly, but a house full of screaming kids is NOT my idea of a good Saturday afternoon). I drove down and met some of my old Lexxfan buddies from UnCon and we had a very good Mexican dinner at a really cool place overlooking the Ohio River. Then we went to see a play at the University of Cincinnati, Dracula (the musical). It was a student production, but it was excellent! The singing and acting were very professional, the costumes were wonderful, and the way they did the set with only a few moveable, interchangeable props was very clever.

I fell in love with the guy who played Renfield. Of all of them, he is the only one I thought had the stage presence to really make it big some day. The others were very good and might be able to make a living at it, but they didn’t have that indefinable spark, that mysterious “it”, that the really successful ones have.

I have to say, I was pleased and relieved with Mort. It seems Lexx is heading back in its original direction (and who on God’s green earth knows where that is?).

I laughed through the episode, was mildly grossed out by the sight of Didi’s half-body and the toe thing, and impressed by the way they did the flashbacks. The mortician was ghoulishly, hilariously creepy. The cop was too much of a cliché. Everything Kai did at least had a discernible motivation this time. Xev grows in my estimation all the time as a tough, smart, but carelessly optimistic woman. Stan’s portrayal was brilliant! BD has a comic sense of timing that I wish we could see more of. He gives me hope that a spin off would be well worth the viewing.

Interesting article. I was more interested in the small bit about computer interactivity, though.

I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore, but I used to, so I guess you could say I had that addiction. Now I mostly only watch two or three favorite shows and ignore the rest. I know I have one of those addictive personalities, but my particular addictions seem to change over time. Right now, I spend more time on the computer than I do with the TV set.

Flamegrape has something with the hearth theory, IMO. It’s human nature to gather around the fire and socialize with our own when darkness falls. But in modern life, we spend most of our time interacting with people we don’t know well or don’t know at all. It’s comforting to come home and “be” with people we think we know because we’ve seen them week after week, or talked to them on the computer. We’ve shifted our “tribe” more or less to TV personalities and chat mates.

I have to agree with bonnee, although it’s a sorry state of affairs. Speculative (scifi) fiction has always been my favorite, not only for the ideas I probably never would have thought of on my own, but because it looks at the human condition under circumstances we wouldn’t see in other genres. It’s too bad more people don’t appreciate it.

dgk, I recommend a very simple book titled “The Writer’s Digest Guide to Manuscript Formats”, ISBN 0-89879-293-2. It has formats for every type of writing: book manuscripts, magazine articles, short stories, cover letters, proposals, queries, plays, movie, AV, and TV scripts, etc.

I’ve got an extensive personal writing library, and from time to time in these forums I may post short excerpts (properly credited of course, to satisfy the copyrights). That is, if people are interested.

Thanks for the info, Valdron, but I think you misunderstood our intention here. These forums are for people who enjoy creative writing, and it’s divided into sections according to the interests of the people who post here. Lexx is merely the starting point, as I’m sure others will want to write fics for their own favorite shows.

The screenplay forum is a place where people who want to try their hand can practice and maybe get some practical advice.

As for breaking into showbiz, or getting published, I’ve been well aware (painfully so) for many, many years how difficult it is. Presently, I’m collaborating on another, original, science fiction project that may or may not get off the ground, and in the meantime, helping to moderate the new forum here. No dreams of glory here. I’m just doing this for fun.

I thought Thefrey, Flamegrape, and I were moderating? Has there been a change? Not that I wouldn’t welcome Headgehog, of course.

I’m a little confused. This is the fanfic forum we’re talking about? It sounds like a monster job to me, so I can see where it’s going to take time to get it up and running. I’m just wondering if we should focus solely on Lexx in that case, since the show will be ending, and if we don’t get the spin off, fic writers will inevitably drift off to other shows.

Please, please, don’t mix up dgrequeen, she has a hard enough time keeping things straight, poor old thing.

Stephen McHattie was the FBI agent pursuing our intrepid Lexx crew; evidently the reincarnation of the astronaut Moss in S2.

I thought there were some pretty funny moments in this ep: when they were watching TV, and Kai looked at them as if he couldn’t believe it, and when he says: “Dead people. Big guns.” and then tries to fire his brace and it flops. And who knew the former sex goddess Britt Eklund had such a sense of comic timing?

But over all, the episode seemed to drag, and there was too much busywork in it. They could have left out the bathroom scene with those meat plant bozos, especially the toothless woman in the wheelchair giving that one guy a blow job on video.

I’m not concerned with the so-called America-bashing, because I don’t think that’s what it is. As I’ve said before, the Beans leave no sacred cow unmolested, and we Americans have certainly done a good enough job exporting an image of ourselves as gun-toting cowboy-misfits in our own movies and television. Besides, it’s not as if the Beans haven’t poked plenty of fun at Canada.

There is a monorail that runs between a few of the casinos, and MGM Grande, The Tropicana, New York New York, and Excalibur are all connected by bridges over the street. However, Las Vegas is not walker friendly, and the casino/hotels are so huge that it takes forever to walk from one to the other. Unfortunately, you will need wheels.

Even though we’re starting out with a fanfic forum largely devoted to Lexx and its possible spinoff, I expect that the fanfic forum will eventually have to expand to include the other shows (especially since the original Lexx is ending soon). I noticed that fanfic is showing up on the Farscape bboard at Scifi now. There are a lot of talented writers out there and it would be nice if we could give them a forum for their special interests.

Both are ok with me, I’v never really tested SadBOAD with HUGE posts and I am a little worried that some pages may be too big to load and blow the board up!! But I don’t think it should be too bad. The system we are using now is a lot more robust than the previous version.

The only other option I can see is to ask the posters to limit their edits/additions to, say four or five, and then begin a new thread if the story goes past that. This is not ideal, and a lot of people won’t like that option. Scifi stories are posted in short installments because there’s not a lot of room in them, but I understand posts here can be a lot bigger. We just don’t know *how* big, and some of the best writers tell really big stories.

Posting links is a great idea except that not everybody has a site. It’s easy to get free space at geocities or tripod, but I’m afraid having to do that might discourage some people who just like to write but don’t know anything about setting up a site. I used geocities’ page builder to make mine, so I could help out a little bit with that.

Oh, yes, and no using real people without permission. Thanks, Frey.

I agree with you about the porn and violence. What I mean is, we need to clarify exactly where to draw the line (as you just did, I think), so that there are no misunderstandings and no opportunities for argument. I’ve seen people go into an absolute tirade about censorship and prudery when others objected to their horribly graphic (and imminently boring) stories, and I would rather not see that happen here if we can make it clear to people up front what we consider acceptable. Again, I don’t mind minimal sexual content (of any gender preference) or minimal violence, as long as it’s well done and integral to the story. But there’s a point past which I won’t go, and I don’t think we’re asking too much if we want others to do the same.

Frankly, I prefer to make the audience work for their mental images with just suggestion and innuendo.

Sad, it appears we’ve run out of suggestions without a clearer idea of where we’re going (God knows, I don’t have any idea )

This is a kind of on-the-fly summary: the fanfic forum will start off basically working the same as the other forums, except that only registered nicks can participate. The stories can be put up whole, or edited as they’re written, and feedback and announcements will be in the thread.

Um, rules are simple: no flaming, no plagiarizing without permission, no hard core porn, no pointless gory violence (unless it’s integral to an actual plotline — that’s gonna be a toughie, I think we need more discussion about those two points). Anything I left out?

Forums will start off with (possibly) a forum for links to art websites and discussions; a forum for S5 fanfic; a forum for spinoff fanfic; and a forum for screenplays. Is this right, or no?

Names of forums: more suggestions? Sadwriters? Lexxlines? Maybe we should make it a contest for the sadgeezers to come up with names for the forums?

I need more guidance on what’s expected of moderators, too, other than keeping order if the troops start to get out of line. Like I said, I’ve never done this before. I’m a moderator/virgin, heh heh. And I’m not an expert in the technology (I still think there are little gerbils inside the box running the thing with wheels).

Start off with Lexx forums and then add more later. That’s your best bet.

Ditto, lets first see how the LEXX FF works out, then move on to other shows when the time/demand arises

Start it out with just Lexx and a just Lexx title. Something like ‘Fic from the Two Universes’ or something like that, and then if fic forums are added for other shows. Give them their own title and put them all under a SadWriters umbrella.

    Agreed.
