I wish we could have gone too! I would have been in heaven if I could have watched them shooting an episode, whether anybody talked to me or not. And I wish I could have seen MMcM in the flesh just so I could decide for myself what kind of person I think he is.

    *G* means “grin”

I’m no expert, but I’ll hazard a guess that “froudian” refers to Frodo of the Hobbits.

Evidently the Beans believe in love at first sight (re: the passionate gaze she and Kai exchanged on the bridge of the Lexx after Kai got his memories back). It’s just a chemical thing between people, and he may be dead and she may be a cluster lizard, but somehow they just clicked.

OK, so it’s just a theory, heh.

    Hi, Bugblatterbeast.

As you can see, there are some very intelligent, interesting people on this board. I’m always fascinated and stimulated.

My welcome is not worth much, as I’m sort of a semi-pariah here (I mostly hang out at the scifi board, and participate in activities there that are viewed in some people’s minds as akin to matricide and animal buggery), but Sad and FX and the other moderators have been very nice (I DID like the moderators’ report on Halifax, btw). I think you will like it here.

I’m curious to know what these awful things are that fans have done to Michael McManus. So far, in two years, the only incident anyone has specifically mentioned is the one where a misguided, very young (and probably drunk) female fan grabbed his butt cheek at the first UnCon. Bad enough, certainly, but I heard that he was very kind, and handled it well, and the girl was extremely embarrassed afterward.

Since then, no one has detailed any other incidences, other than the usual silly fan worship from afar (and God knows, I’ve done my share). What, exactly, happened that made him so afraid of fans? Has anyone threatened him? Propositioned him? No one ever says.

Can it be that he just considers himself a “serious” actor who doesn’t want to be bothered with all the fan stuff? I’ve said before that he isn’t exactly a people person, and maybe isn’t the kind of person I’d want him to be, but it’s certainly his right to be whatever he wants.

As for the clone stuff, why WAS that brought up? I doubt MMcM even knows about that, or if he’s heard, I seriously doubt he gives a rat’s patoot about it. Why would he? It doesn’t have anything at all to do with him personally. The game is based on a character which, as of now, he no longer inhabits.

Oh my God! You got me!

I was reading the first part, all serious like, thinking oboy this is really nice, those Salter guys really take care of us: and then I read the rest of it and LMAO!!

Especially the last one!! I can just picture Xev’s face!

It’s true, not much really happens in Lexx as far as sex goes — even Stan’s Boomtown romp is just hinted at.

But there have been some genuinely touching, funny moments, most of them already named. My fav is the Gondola scene between Xev and Prince/Kai, though. The look on his face when she touches him is priceless.

There’s another moment when Xev and Kai are in the moth, and Kai is about to drop down to do battle with Vlad, and Xev cries out: “Kai, stop!” Also, when she hugs his neck in a couple of scenes, and the little tuck-you-in kiss when she puts him in the cryopod. Xev loves Kai beyond just lusting after him, and it’s a friendly, affectionate, family kind of love, which represents a development past the love-slave programming.

I wish they could have written a scene where Xev got Live Kai into bed with her and she just knocked his socks off (finally dragging him out of his self-absorption).

Let me add my thanks for the write-up! It was terrific, and I laughed out loud at the funny bits. I love the behind-the-scenes stuff as much as I love the show. I wish I could have been there with you.

Brian Downey is just an all-around nice guy, I can’t say it any better than that. And the rest of the cast and crew and producers were very gracious and kind to us when we were there for UnCon, so it doesn’t surprise me that they were so nice to you when you went.

As for Michael, well, he’s a good actor and I’ve enjoyed his performances and the character he’s embodied. I guess it would be too presumptious of me to expect him to be the kind of person in real life that *I* want him to be. He is his own person, and if he’s not the kind of person I would normally want to know, c’est la vie. I do hope I will see him in other roles on TV or feature films, and count myself lucky that I was not disappointed by meeting him in person.

Anyway, thanks again, it was kind of you to share that with us. Sorry about the broken foot, though.

I remember Lex Gigeroff saying at UnCon that they wanted to bring Dieter Laser back for Season4 but they didn’t think they were going to be able to get him because of scheduling conflicts. Too bad. Mantrid is one of my favorite characters.

Very astute of you, to see this side of MM. I have seen lots of pix (real life) where he is cordial, or smiling, but they are fewer than those of Brian or Xenia.

A lot of us have speculated over time that when MMcM is being charming to the fans, he is really “onstage”, and that this is not natural to him. I believe he is an extremely shy person who is not comfortable around large numbers of strangers. In fact, from all I’ve managed to gather, he’s really only comfortable in the company of other actors and entertainment people.

I haven’t heard too much about Xenia, but she seems to be able to mix with fans very well (if she’s not comfortable doing it, she at least hides it well).

Brian Downey, on the other hand, probably never met a stranger in his life.

    There are so many!

Cleric Theme, Battle of the Universe, and Shadows and Prophets from the first CD. I’m also kind of fond of Feppo’s Party (Stan’s song if ever was), and Brunnis.

Angel Song (Nook), A Walk in the Desert (Battle), Wild,Wild Lexx, Zev Dies (Terminal), and The Search (Girltown) all from the second CD.

If I had to choose which music most typifies Lexx, I’d have to pick Cleric Theme and Shadows and Prophets (“And if I do not return, destroy the Lexx…but the Divine Predecessors?!?… will understand that my priority must now be to end this prophecy. The Last of the Brunnen-G *must* be destroyed!”)

If anybody wants to know what APEC is, please just come to the scifi board and post your question there, and we will explain the fanfics and the game to you. But X wants to drop it here, I want to drop it, everybody wants to drop it, and I think we should. The scifi board and Sadgeezer’s board are different places with different kinds of posts. You can choose one or the other, or both, but there’s no reason we can’t keep them separate, and there’s certainly no reason to fight over it.

Oh my Gawd!! Can it be…???? *Prosthetics* on a Lexx actor??

Well, there was the Dark Lady in Woz, and there have been the occasional statuesque hairdos (Jihana in Stan’s Trial, Vlad, Kai) but this is the first time I can remember seeing anything but paint added to an actor’s face.

Thanks for showing us the pic. I can’t wait to see the new section.

I agree. This was one of the first sites I found when I was looking for info on Lexx, way back when. I read every episode (spoiled myself rotten, but I didn’t care).

I’ve always recommended Sad’s site to the newbies on the Scifi board because it has so much stuff, and not just Lexx stuff.

Curiously, I’ve been in other conversations where the topic was: Why do we like to see Kai helpless and vulnerable? And we came to the same conclusion: We’re all a little sick. heh heh

Actually, I think it’s because when he’s his normal self, he’s your basic, unapproachable hero. But when he’s hurt, that’s when he becomes most human, most touchable.

Well… Kai. For any and all reasons stated above.

My next favorite is Xev, because she’s a tough chick who doesn’t take crap, but who can get all kittenish and manipulative when she wants to. I thought getting sloshed and driving Brod Parsnip up to the Lexx in a moth was the funniest thing she’s ever done.

I like Stan, but I was never really annoyed with his character until Season 4. This “sex with anybody, anywhere, at any time, damn the dangers” makes no sense because Stan had really shown signs that he was growing up. Guess not.

    Interesting to see people’s choices.

My favorite one to hate is White Trash. Ignorant, inbred white southern trash has been done to the point of nausea.

Didn’t much care for S3’s Garden either. Those gardeners and their floating flowers were creepy. And I never did figure out if Kai just decided to decompose on his own, or if he was under the influence of the gardeners, like Stan and Xev were.

My favorite aliens were the Centauri and the Narns of B5. I might be a Centauri, despite the fact that the women shave their heads, because they do get to wear cool costumes. I might be a Narn because they had such an intriguing point of view about the universe.

I wouldn’t be a Minbari, because those things on their heads must make it hard to sleep.

Granted, the melodies in Brigadoom were pretty simple (mostly lifted from German folk songs and lullabies), but the format was well-crafted. The lyrics, coupled with the Master of Ceremonies’ remarks, told a complete and heartbreaking story. That’s what grabs everybody, and it doesn’t hurt to have tunes that are easy to hum along with.

I loved Brigadoom, but then I’m a theater fan anyway. However, I have to wait until the end of Season 4 to decide which is my favorite episode of all time. It’s a pretty strong contender, though.

Hmm. Tough question. I’d have to go with Xev. Why? Because the Beans would want it that way.

As for Xev eating Prince — I guess that depends on whether he’s in the spinoff or not. But just as a what if: I don’t think Prince would be either tasty or nutritious.

An additional note about Net/Web: Valdron told us that the reason Salter did those two eps that way was because funds were getting tight, and they were running up against a deadline in getting all their episodes out. So they took one episode and shot extra scenes (much cheaper and faster than filming a whole new ep) to make two episodes out of it, a la Rashomon. Luckily for me, a friend sent me a tape, so I managed to see both of them, and I have to say they did a bang up job. I found Scifi’s decision to air only one episode unfortunate, if not a little insulting.

Wow, this is a really good discussion. Everyone has made such good points, that I can’t really add much, other than I look for the same things in all other stories that I look for in scifi: strong characterizations and good story lines. Lexx offers the best of these, I think (American TV tends to be vapid, always going for the square-jawed hero and the happy ending). Lexx is off-beat and funny, and presents human beings the way they really are: often selfish, weak, dishonest, greedy, and plain mean, but capable of great heroism, and selflessness, and love.

I admire Farscape for its technical aspects (Muppets they are, but they’re *great* Muppets). But the stories and the characters rarely grab me the way Lexx does.

Star Trek was ground-breaking, and I thank God for it, but now it just seems tired and worn out. Star Wars had tremendous potential which was frittered away on a lot of special effects. I think there are a lot of new things coming up now that may show promise, but we’ll have to see. The almighty dollar (as in all things) drives entertainment, and the PTB tend to go for the lowest common denominator instead of giving us mind-stretching quality.

If the UnCon is scheduled for the weekend of June 2/3, I might be able to make it. Otherwise, I have to vote for September.

In any case, I don’t see the point in having the UnCon in Halifax while Lexx is on hiatus (August). We could just as easily meet other fans in more accessible places, if that were the case.
