If I were ever going to have another child, or another animal (which I’m not), I would name at least one of them Kai, just because I think it’s a cool name.

I secretly call my new truck Overdog (that’s a cool name too), from that movie that Peter Straus and Molly Ringwald and Michael Ironside were in (Adventures in the Forbidden Zone? I forget). Rotten movie, but Michael Ironside who played Overdog was too evil as always!

    Geek, and proud of it!

Personally, I like the mirror idea. Who better for 790 to love than 790? Although, I think he’s getting so evil because he’s malfunctioning.

I suppose what I was trying to suggest is that the anal humour has a deeper connotation. Anu(s) is the god of the sky and re/creation in various mythology, and the notion of anus as displacement connects up with the notion of an end/ing as a new beginning. Indeed, if you look up the Book of the Dead, you’ll find the idea(d) of Anu as day of judgement and deliverance. I include a copy and paste of Anus as deity.

    Uh huh.

Talks of succession still happen in the deep south

I think you mean “secession” as in “to secede”.

And, yes, in some quarters the Civil War is still vividly remembered, in spirit if not in actual memory. Years ago, when my mother came to visit, I offered to take her through an old Civil War house that had been turned into a museum in the town where I was living. She was interested, until she found out it was the boyhood home of General William Tecumseh Sherman. Not only did she refuse to go in, I thought she was going to hit me.

I know it’s from Scottish folklore, but what does that have to do with the episode? And why is one letter changed? Maybe somebody should ask one of the Beans.

The theater appeared in space, out of nowhere, just like the original Brigadoon appeared out of the mists. It exists out of space and time, like the original. And it dealt with the ultimate doom of the BrunnenG — hence “Brigadoom”, the play on Brigadoon. But, hey, who knows what goes on in the minds of the Beans?

Bonnee, I didn’t mean to imply that your remarks weren’t welcome. I only meant that I didn’t see where Season2 led directly to the anal humor in Season4 (which is what I assumed your remarks meant). IMO, the whole series has been about appetites of all kinds, which is just basic human nature (Dalek excepted).

And Bonnee provides a definition which (hopefully) helps explain Flamegrape’s answer. Given this definition, the versus aspect of this thread might be thought inappropriate and instead encourages the notion of thematic continuity. Indeed, it helps provide a bridge between the two universes, and suggests that the notion of the (ass) End of the Universe coincides with the thematic of a new beginning/ending. Or , as stated above, the end/ing of season 2 offers a literal opening for season 4. Correspondinly, the notion of Lexx not really being about sex is also antithetical the show’s impetus/trajectory. Not only does the show constantly posit the idea that the universe’s life force is essentially libidinal, the symbol of Lexx as dragonfly underlines the themes of fertility and renewal. The dragonfly/flying penis motif is itself the messenger or midwife (read: bridge) between universes.

Why not just say: “Brigadoom” is a play on the word “Brigadoon”, and leave it at that? And read Flamegrape’s posted synopses of the original.

We got it the first time, Bonnee. For your information, life is libidinal. There’s nothing esoteric about that.

In the meantime, a controversy was brewing on the bridge.

Captain Kirk eyed up Xev appreciatively. “Hello,” he said, sidling up to her (refusing to notice that she was probably three inches taller than himself). “My name is James Kirk. I’m captain of the Starship Enterprise.”

Xev lifted an eyebrow and smirked seductively at him.

“Hey!” said another man nearby. “That can’t be right! *I’m* captain of the Enterprise!”

“Oh yeah?” Kirk said. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Captain Jonathan Archer — of the U.S.S. Enterprise!”

“Archer, Archer, hmmm… I think there was an Archer who was captain of the Starship Enterprise prototype about a hundred years ago!”

Dylan Hunt looked confused. “What the hell is a Starship Enterprise?”

Xev was growing increasingly frustrated with this exchange. “Boys, boys,” she soothed. “There’s no need to squabble. There’s plenty to go around.” And she giggled when Captain Kirk leered at her.

A woman wearing a similar uniform to the two starship captains stepped forward. “What we need to figure out, is where we are and how we got here.”

    “Who are you?” demanded Kirk.

“Kathryn Janeway, Captain of the Voyager.”

Stanley Tweedle, who had been watching all this from his mount on the control column, threw up his hands. “You’re on the bridge of the Lexx, that’s where ya are, and I’m the captain of the Lexx, the most powerful destructive force in the two universes, and this is too weird, and I want you all to get off!” A woman standing to one side caught his eye. “Except maybe you, honey.”

    T’Pol lifted an eyebrow.

Kai, having returned from stowing away the distressed young telepath, approached Tyr and said, “How long does it take you to do your hair like that?”

Nice points, bonnee, and forgive me for butting in, but I don’t think it was Jen’s opinion so much that got people going as it was her tone. Certainly she has a right to her own opinions, and I don’t think anybody here would dispute that. It’s a free board, so we can have all the opinions we want, and spout them ad infinitum if it makes us happy, but there simply is no excuse for bad manners while doing it.

Also quite full of herself, from the tone of her email. Accomplishment and intelligence are no excuse for tactlessness and insensitivity. Frankly, she doesn’t come across as the kind of person I’d care to impress.

Um, well, if I may leave the ass-kissing to others….?

Grammar and spelling have always been sticking points with me (thanks to a relentless mother), but I don’t correct other people and I don’t obsess about it, because I realize that most people in the world aren’t as anal about it as I (and obviously Jen) are. Besides, as you said, the point of the reviews is to outline the plot and give your opinions of it. I’ve laughed my head off at your comments because they are so… so… Lexxy!

To me, Lexx and Lexxians (which includes sites like this one) have been the source of much needed mirth for the last two years, may we reign supreme forever! Too bad so many people think being serious about it means being “serious” about it.

Also, people who insist they are only being honest with you are also often brutally rude, and Jen proved herself to be no exception. Mom would be appalled at the lack of manners.

Honestly, it is the last season. They tore the sets down this time, and the moth is hanging from the ceiling of The Shoe Shop, a bar in Halifax. The actors and writers have all scattered to various places looking for new work.

The only hope for continuation of Lexx is a spin off, and there’s no word on whether that’s going to happen or not. It depends on the ratings for the rest of this season, I guess. In any case, a spin off would be a different story, and not just more of the old Lexx.

I don’t know that I should tell you this story, but I’ve come to believe implicitly in life after death, and this is why.

In 1989, my younger sister was diagnosed with Hepatitis C, and went into the hospital. I was a thousand miles away at the time, trying to manage two households, a job change, the temporary separation of my family (for economic reasons), and various and sundry other things, so our only contact during the two months she was in the hospital was by phone. She kept telling me she was getting better and would be going home soon. The last time I talked to her (a Sunday), she said she would be going home by mid or end of the week.

On that Wednesday afternoon, I was working alone in my office (I worked for a lawyer then, and I was alone in the building) when I thought to myself that I should call my sister when I got home to see if she’d been released from the hospital. At that moment, when I thought of her, I was overcome with the most powerful feeling I’ve ever had that my parents (who were deceased) were in the room with me. I couldn’t see them, but somehow I knew they were there and they were looking at me, almost with sympathy I felt.

That night my nephew called to say that my sister had gone into a coma, and by Friday, before I could get there, she was dead.

But my dad asked me, “Isn’t he a British author?” I said, “Yes and later he moved to Sri Lanka.” This made him doubt that the FBI would question him. Maybe he was questioned by the British government?

This was a story told by Clarke himself in the preface of one of his books, and also mentioned by Isaac Asimov in a discussion about this very topic (which is why I thought it might be true). At the time the FBI came knocking on his door, he was living in Manhattan. He didn’t move to Sri Lanka until the mid 50’s.

I’ve seen the phrase “war of the worlds” used in any number of editorials describing conflicts between nations and cultures. And there’s “May the Force be with you”, which is used with a nudge and a wink, and often paraphrased to incorporate other words (as in, “May the farce be with you”, heh heh).

There’s a tale in scientific circles (possibly apocryphal) that Arthur C. Clarke was the one who thought up geosynchronous satellites in one of his stories, and that’s where rocket scientists got the idea. I tend to think it might be true, since during WWII, he was questioned by the FBI about a story he wrote that described the atomic bomb in close detail (before those details were ever made public).

Scifi writers have always been prescient. It’s hard to say how many budding young scientists have been sparked to discover new things by fantastic stories they might have read. For certain, it’s made me believe that if we can dream it up, we can eventually find a way to make it work.
