Where am I, Al?
You’ve leaped into the body of a Starfleet captain. The year is 2245 and you’re on board the starship Enterprise NCC-1701.
Why am I here?
To prevent a series from being made.

Perhaps some law of nature dictates that sci-fi-addicted geezers must have cartoon-addicted siblings. When I mentioned to my brother that some people on one of my message boards were talking about his favorite show, he gave me a 15-minute briefing on Scooby-Doo, Where are You? and its spinoffs so I would know what to say the next time I posted on the thread. But I’m afraid I’m unable to apply all his useful information to any post.

ParticipantI believe Kai has faint wisps of emotions and wants, but they are like distant echoes of a past mind he can never hear clearly. Kai is different from Data in that there is the capacity for emotions in his brain. They’re something he lost, not something he’s trying to obtain.
I, for one, was suprised Kai didn’t brush Tina off faster. I figured he’d say “Please don’t distract me when I’m trying to find a way to save your planet” or something after a few seconds. Instead, there’s this looong drawn-out scene where he’s watching that movie that we know is going to have something interesting and Shadow-ish in it and Tina’s all over him and I kept thinking “Come on, Kai! What happened to the coldly logical killing machine?”
By the way, what was that thing on the film? It didn’t look like a vampire. It was sort of like His Divine Shadow, only white instead of black and with the head-tail-thing sticking straight up so he (she?) looks like a K.K.K. member. Was it a Divine Shadow larva?
Also, one final question: How did this whole Velma thing get started? Was it just an attempt to refer to a character whose name the writer couldn’t remember (Like Dr. von Schatten, or George W. Priest ) or did whoever said it genuinely think the character was named Velma?
Okay, now I need to wrap up this post before it gets to the length where SadBoard members just scroll through it scanning for phrases like “mega spoilers” and “nude Louise Wischermann photos” without actually reading the content. Computer, end program.
And now for the unnecessarily long signature hand-picked from the “SciFi3.doc” cut & paste archive on my computer:

Actually, it’s 25 years by my count. I believe you’re thinking of Probe, the 80s miniseries. I’m talking about P.R.O.B.E., the 90s movie series.

Now, if there are any fans out there thinking of writing a flame post, I apologize for the comparison. The P.R.O.B.E. movies have a somewhat different premise, more realistic characters, genuinely suprising endings, and overall better writing. Yes, everybody’s nuts.
My brother watches Cartoon Network about 24/7 so I’ve caught a little Scooby-Doo. It reminds me of the P.R.O.B.E. series (I suppose now Aleck will respond with a 7-paragraph post about how Scooby-Doo and P.R.O.B.E. are nothing alike ).
I saw the episode where the characters are on their way to some place and their hippy fan breaks down and they encounter some apparently supernatural entity and run and then they talk to this guy who tells them the area is haunted and the three “serious” characters go investigating but it’s the goofy kid and the dog that accidentally stumble upon the evidence that the monster is a hoax to avert attention from an illegal operation then when all the characters are together that monster reappears and it turns out to be the guy they met in the beginning of the episode in a mask. Oh, and in the final scene everyone’s laughing.
Anyway, my cartoon-addicted brother says there were 6 spinoffs of the show, which is really scary. He also says Bubbles is the hottest Powerpuff Girl, so I guess having a thing for one of the girls on Scooby-Doo isn’t so nuts.

ParticipantNow, what happened to all that talk of Doreen Jacobi reappearing?
I’d like to see more of Gubby (he was a laugh and a half!) but I doubt the Beans could get someone as well-known as Wayne Robson to appear on their little show again (it was a miracle he could be suckered into doing Patches in the Sky!).
And I’d say the Wozard should be reincarnated on Earth but that actor is currently tied up…on the same show! Walter Borden was both the Wozard and His Divine Shadow, and now he’s playing His Shadow’s contemporary human incarnation (Dr. Ernst Longbore).
Anyway, I think it’s safe to say Mantrid, Lyekka, and Bunny will be in this season, and we’ll see more of Giggerota and Priest.

ParticipantIn the novel it says skekTek the scientist has components of a Skeksis, Gelfling, and Podling all sewn together along with mechanical components he built himself. All for the purpose of prolonging life.
I make a fine distinction between science fiction and fantasy. Some movies are science fantasy, like The Dark Crystal, White Dwarf, Wizards of the Demon Sword, Quest of the Delta Knights, The Adventures of Baron von Münchhausen, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Langoliers, Naked Lunch, and Time Bandits to name a few. They get to be on my site, even though they contain fantasy elements.
I started this topic so everyone here could share their personal cult favorites, not to discuss the scientific elements of Froud films.

ParticipantThe Key behaves like a symbiotic organism. It appears to be essentially a piece of Insect-type essence, only it is under the partial command of the host and is not self-aware. Its home is in the brain, but it can extend pseudopods of energy to any point in the host’s body. Like any mobile symbiont, it will abandon its host if it knows it is in danger of immediate death. If part of the organism’s body containing a pseudopod is removed too fast for it to react, a piece of the Key will be taken with the tissue as a separate organism, but will want to rejoin with the original Key. Does that answer everybody’s questions?

The Dark Crystal is science-fantasy. It contains certain fantastic elements, but it is mostly based upon scientific concepts. It takes place on another planet in another solar system. All of the characters are extraterrestrial xenomorphs, one is a cyborg, and quantum physics figure into the back story. That qualifies it as a sci-fi movie in my book.
I have spent countless hours documenting the information given in The Dark Crystal and the companion material from Brian Froud and other official sources. I hope one day soon to put my work on the internet on my planned science fiction website. Unfortunately, this dream has been continually plagued by computer and human errors, and I can not be sure when it will actually become a reality. Anyway, back to the movies.
Labyrinth, though a great film, is pure fantasy. It follows a classic (Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz etc.) plotline of a mortal human stumbling into a fantastic world. The main character makes a foolish wish, and a metaphysical being hears it and turns the universe upsidedown to fulfill it, even though she doesn’t really want it to come true. These are textbook fantasy elements, nothing sci-fi.
Ya understand now?

I know this stuff because I’m an introverted geek with no social life who spends his spare time reading and watching the Sci-Fi Channel.

In two weeks I head off to the University of Iowa. I haven’t decided on a major, yet.
On the topic of the Cimmerians, here is the only decent site I’ve been able to find on the culture. Isaac Asimov has a theory about Gog in the Bible representing the Cimmerians or their king, but most scholars are skeptical of the connection. I bring that up because that would imply that His Divine Shadow played a part in the Apocalypse.

Neither. It’s Carpathia (not far from the location of ancient Cimmeria), possibly during one of the Plague Years. If anyone knows what date Prof. Longbohr gave for the Carpathian painting, please post it so I can update my timeline (I can’t remember and couldn’t tape Texx Lexx so I didn’t include it).

ParticipantEverybody figured it was going to be The Clone Wars until now. I think it’s good. At least this time there were few rumored titles before the announcement (remember all the alleged Episode I titles? ).

ParticipantI had expected a negatory reaction to some of my favorites. The whole idea of a cult film is that a bunch of other people will think you’re crazy for liking it. On that note, I’ll critique some of the other cult sci-fi movies that’ve been brought up :
Brazil (1985)
An uninspired and painfully dull film. The plot is almost impossible to follow, and the “film noir” style that’s supposed to make it dark and suspenseful only succeeds in making it boring and migraine-inducing. Rather like Blade Runner, only even more difficult to watch.Barbarella (1968)
I wouldn’t have called this a cult film. I wasn’t aware it had any sort of following, since it seems to be pretty much universally despised. Barbarella shows us just how bad science fiction can get if the makers aren’t careful. I’ve been told Plan 9 from Outer Space is worse, but I’m skeptical. This is the lousy film, the personification of everything bad in the low-tech under-written under-acted sci-fi films of that era. There is not a drop of creativity or originality in the whole movie, it’s just recycled elements from other movies. Very much a product of its time. The band is a lot better than the movie. There’s a Duran Duran song on one of my Modern Rock C.D.s, and it’s pretty good.
As you might have guessed from my Froudian status, I am a fan of Labyrinth. I won’t comment on it here since it’s not sci-fi.

ParticipantCimmeria is real. It was located along the shores of the Black Sea. I got the (approximate) date of its collapse in The Epic of Man by the editors of Life. As I mentioned before, in the Odyssey Cimmeria is mentioned, and called something like “a place of darkness.” Maybe that’s why the writers put the ancient evil Shadow-ish thing there.
I really doubt Prof. Longbohr (okay, I have no clue how to spell his name…) was referring to Sumer. He said four thousand years ago, and I don’t think there were Sumerians that late. The first civilization in Sumer was ca. 6000 B.C. (according to my early civ. textbook, older sources say like 4000 B.C.) and I think they were gone by the middle of the 3rd millennium B.C. Anyway, I’ve studied Sumerian mythology. It’s really something.
Can anyone remember the date of the Carpathian painting?
The whole time travel thing is pretty speculative. The fractal core sending them back is pretty much just my pet theory (for the details look at my latest endless post under the “Divine Shadow” thread.
The Time Prophet made it sound like there was/will be a point when the future and past meet, so that could be the transition. But if the Lexx were at the beginning of the Dark Zone then they would’ve have to be frozen for at least 14 billion years (if the most conservative of the high-I.Q. boys on Earth is right) before they got to our near future.
In conclusion: my posts are long and boring.

ParticipantSquish was the young Cluster Lizard in Lexx 1.4: The Giga Shadow. Names from sci-fi are pretty common as online handles. I once did a search for “Labria” (an alien in the bar scene in Star Wars) and there were like five!
I’m usually 42na (Bib Fortuna was an alien in Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi), but for some reason (maybe no numbers are allowed at the beginning, I don’t remember) I decided to make up a new alias. I used to post on the old SadBoard as Lee (my first name).
“DalekTek790” is supposed to look like a generic online handle, with sci-fi terms squished together into a meaningless amalgam. If you want to know where the individual elements came from, just read the signature below.

ParticipantI always figured Thodin had been through some sort of training that allowed him to pass the Key to others at will. One wonders where Thodin got it in the first place, how it was transferred to him.
In the Lexx episode I wrote Thodin had help from a secondary bio-vizier known as Bugboy. Bugboy had worked on the Lexx and had a copy of the Key, which he transferred to the heretical bio-vizier-in-training Thodin after discovering that the Divine Order was in Insect conspiracy to destroy mankind.
But in the show the origin of the second Key (His Divine Shadow had the first, and part of his essence may still possess it, for all we know) has never been revealed.

ParticipantIt’s not speculation to say we don’t know how many Insect wars there were, how long they endured, and how far apart they occured. It would be a lie to say we do know these figures. Unless there’s some sort of official Lexx chronology I’m not aware of that puts down exact figures, it’s all up in the air at this point.
And when the sentances have beginnings like “It may be…” or “There could’ve” that clearly identifies what comes next as speculation or theory. I never said anything was a fact unless it was specifically referred to in dialog or occurred onscreen.

ParticipantThere are a lot of possible translations, which differ slightly in wording but not in meaning. Here’s my favorite translation of the beginning:
Lo! We hear
of glory in days past, clan kings
Spear-Danes, and what honor these noblemen
won! There’s a great Beowulf site here.
