How about Ultraviolet? Since I don’t have the ability to get it together it would be nice to see it with the green screen thing you do – since the movie looks great and sucks in every other way….
It was released on DVD not to long ago, so it would be a timely review.

    Another would be:

My Immortal (Ad Vitam) – here is a review from IMDB to give you an idea of the film if you haven’t already seen it:

Let me tell you about the director first. Enki Bilal, born in Yugoslavia, moved to France when he was 10, and has become one of the most influential comic book artist in France since around 1980. His works include ‘Nikopol Trilogy,’ and this French film ‘Immortal’ (his third entry as film director) is based on the first two books of the series.

I said this because the merit of ‘Immortal’ lies all in its visual imaginations. The film’s story with many characters is very confusing, revealing its origin. The film is visually interesting for it was shot against the background of green-colored screen, on which the buildings or the landscapes of the city is digitally painted. The method is similar to that of ‘Sky Captain’, but the effects are quite different as I explain later.

[THE STORY] is complicated, and the film refuses to explain some part of it. ‘Immortal’ is set in the year of 2095, NEw York City, where cars are flying between the skyscrapers, but one strange thing is floating on the air — that’s a pyramid, out of which a naked man with a bird’s head emerges. His name is Horus, a convicted deity who is given seven days to do something on Earth, borrowing the body of a convicted human Nikopol.

The nature of the crime of Nikopol (played by Thomas Kretschmann, ‘The Pianist’) is only vaguely suggested, but anyway Horus possesses his body, and controls him as he wishes. Then, his purpose will be clear when Nikopol/Horus approaches to a mysterious woman Jill (former Miss France Linda Hardy), whose skin is all white and whose blood is blue.

Kretschmann, Hardy, and Charlotte Rampling (as Jill’s doctor) appear as live-action actors while most of the other characters are created with CGIs by a French studio. The CGI-created characters look like those you have seen in the film version of ‘Final Fantasy’ and in this sense ‘Immortal’ is more ambitious than ‘Sky Captain.’ Interesting thing is one of the CGI characters (Rampling’s estranged husband) is played by uncredited Jean-Louis Trintignant (voice only) who had appeared Enki Bilal’s first film ‘Bunker Palace H tel.’

[VISUALS] I like the visual imagination of ‘Immortal,’ but many fans would point out, quite rightly, that the future world of ‘Immortal,’ impressive as it is on its own way, are not as original as it looks. You remember classic ‘Blade Runner’ ‘The Fifth Element’ and one Japanese genius Otomo. To be fair, as I wrote before, Enki Bilal’s original comics predate them (the first Nikopol comic was published in 1980), but still complaints are understandable.

But if the film is flawed (and I think it is), that is because of the visual itself, I mean, the CGI parts. To be honest, the CGI-drawn characters (of a greedy senator, a detective, a big company executive, etc.) are all poorly done, and their bodily or facial movements are unnatural and awkward. I am really afraid that they are giving serious damages to the whole film.

But as you will see, the talent of Enki Bilal is undeniable, and his vision is presented effectively with the other-worldly but retrospective descritions of the city of New York in 2095, which is beautifully drawn with blue and grey (red is seldom seen). Far from perfect, but the picture is worth seeing.

    CONGRATS!!!!!!!

Yep – some of the generated names almost sound like real names (while others really, really don’t!)

Aeryn would be a very cool name – although no non-saddies could spell it right 🙂

Ever noticed in the baby name books how many “A” names there are and after that it dwindles down dramatically. I think most parents open the book at the hospital and pick from the A’s…. (although I read the whole book my kid ended up with Aden!)

How about Zooey? ; – ) or Zhann or Chiana?

Finally finished watching the series – so good ! – so sad it’s over!

Yeah – I totally noticed the rip from “Angriest Angel” in the Scar ep! I think the whole series was heavily borrowed, really. A cool nod, i guess?

I thought the last ep was kind of weak though.

Thus said: BSG not Sci-Fi? Space ships, faster than light travel, A.I.’s….hmm, looks like a duck to me 🙂

Obviously by the two different dictionary descriptions, no one really knows! LOL

I think Science Fiction can loosely be described as anything with a science component and a fiction componet, no matter how soft or subtle the science componet is (most in the camp of “not enough science in it, only complain about shows that don’t pander to engineers by explaining the inner workings of each techno item, I prefer things like Firefly where the science is all there but no one blabs on and on about it ’cause it’s just everyday life for them…do you blabl regualry about how your microwave works> I think not!). Although books and shows with a soft science component often end up as “Science Fantasy” which is the stupidest label of all. I mean , what difference, really, is fiction/fantasy?

I think most people identify anything with a SPACE component or Futuristic setting as Sci-Fi but wouldn’t pick shows like Alias or the bond franchise that contain alot of gadgets and science…..but quite literally would fit into the sci-fi label.

ok…well before I sound really dumb, I’ll shut up! 😛

    science fiction (American History Dictionary)
A literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background.

    From Wikipedia
A collection of well-known science-fiction novels and magazinesScience fiction is a genre of fiction in which at least part of the narrative depends on science, either real or imagined, to generate settings or events which have not yet occurred in reality (and may never do so). The author Theodore Sturgeon wrote “A good science fiction story is a story about human beings, with a human problem, and a human solution, that would not have happened at all without its science content.”

The last couple of eps were pretty crappy, even by my low standards….

Esp the “dark” universe ones. What the heck, can’t they even afford new uniforms?
“Hmm, lets just make the girls shirts into a belly shirt using these handy scissors..yep, that’s great…o.k. people ready to film now!” ..actually, I don’t think they actually even cut the shirts, just tucked them under. Couldn’t they have ripped off some props from the Klingon room or something?
    😕

It looks interesting – plot lines indicate that is like a modern or futuristic Sherlock Holmes vs Moriarty – reminds me of that brief series about lawyers in the future, what was it called Century City? Dealing with issues we are talking about possibly happening, like cloning, but actually having them happen in our society.

I think it might work with Patrick Stewart…the only problem being it is kind of like a rehash of Outer Limits, dealing with the moral issue of the day kinda thing…

I would give it a watch for Patrick Stewart…

hmmm….I enjoy CGI but years later, when you watch it again, it’s like “How did that seem realisitc to me at the time??” Like if you watch Terminator again.

I also hate when CGi gets excessive, like SW3…it took away from the story..I can’t watch it. There are stupid spaceships in every background whipping by the windows making noise. I was wishing someone would just shut the curtains already…

I do enjoy the CGI if the character is essential to pushing the story along, like the rock creature in Galaxy Quest. I don’t think it could have been modelled very well, but what do I know about Special Effects?

I would have like some better modelling or CGI in some of the old Dr. Who’s though 🙂 I was watching an ep the other day where the Daleks actually had toilet plungers for arms..with the plunger ends still on them!!
