You’ve gotta bare in mind that I am one of the underprivelidged masses with extreemly limited access to Sky (falling upon the mercy of my friends to see Angel and Buffy (when finally aired)), so what I consider new won’t ring true to a lot of you (jeez, I’ve only just seen the first 2 Lexx Movies)

    So here goes…

1 Best New Sci-fi series – Gotta be Farscape. Damn wierd at the mo, but definately the best on UK terrestrial at present.

2 Worst New Sci-fi series – (Not wishing to like like I just cut and pasted Bekka’s votes) Andromeda. I think Gene slipped when he invented this Donkey. What, was he watching ‘Buck Rogers in the 25th century’ and decided that blatent rip off are the sincerest form of flattery? (Apologies to the die hard Rommy fans)

3 Best Sci-fi book – Just re-read Phule’s Company by Robert Asprin. Damn good book. Always makes me laugh. Possibly not the ‘best’, but the only other Sci-fi book I’ve been reading this year is Ian Banks ‘Whatchamcallit of Weapons’ and haven’t got to the end of chapter 2 yet.

4 Best Sci-fi movie – May not be the best, but I was bowled over by the Final Fantasy movie. Visually stunning. And refreshingly different to the ‘formula’ sci-fi

5 Best non Sci-fi newcomer/thing – (I’m taking blatant liberties with this one, cos you could argue it is Sci-fi) The best ‘new thing’ I discovered this year is this site (which I found when looking for buffy forums, so I say it counts). Well layed out and moderated, well thought out and structured posts on topics that interest me, and none of the immaturity that is rife on so many sites. For this you all have me thanks. Yeah, I know this makes me a smarmy suck up, but I’ve been called worse

6 Nicest Sadgeezer – Um… all of you? Again with the smarmy ****e… But everyone here is, at their best, open and friendly and at worst, tolerant (everybody has their off days). Only one person has successfully T’d me off, and that was on a day I was in a bad mood, and it was only the once. I’d call that pretty damn good.

7 Most Annoying geezer – Mmm… Let me see. Who has been a major topic recently and upset a lot of people? Nope, the name escapes me. Next question.

8 Best Moderator – My contact with Mods has been limited, and I dunno what they do behind the scenes… But FX (for his delicate phrasing when shifting one of my posts), Marybeth (for always having a kind word when required) and Camelyn (for all the work in keeping us up to date in the Farscape crisis) warrant special mention. Respect goes to all involved though, including Saddy, who was IMHO unfairly excluded from this award (never mind mate, we still love ya).

9 Best Forum – How can you judge between them. A forum is only as good as the posts in it, and we all post in many. If you want to count it by which one I go into most often… it’d be the pub. Once again, web surfing reflecting life . Saying that, I am dead chuffed about the Science Faction forum.

10 Best Post – Again… I cannot choose. There are so many good posts on such diverse subjects. And picking just one post would make all the others feel sad. I won’t do that to them this close to Christmas. They’re all great!!

Have a great Christmas people. And I look forward to building on the new freindships (I hope I’m not being presumptuous) I’ve found, in the New Year (p.s. if I don’t get a birthday greeting I’ll be miffed. No more heavy hints, promise)

I KNOW I talk rubbish (I like to think it’s one of my charms), and I’m damn certain that there are a sizable number of people out there who don’t like me (I’ve been told I’m an aquired taste. Many of my closest friends tell me that they thought I was rude and arrogant when they first met me). But that doesn’t worry me as much as the prospect of rats and spiders interbreeding and producing a race of rat spiders that will take over the world.

Bekka – I dunno about everyone else, but I have been v. busy at work (do most of my posting from there… why pay the phone bill at home and do it on a 56k modem when I can use company facilities and skive while I’m doing it). But the main reason is I’ve been giving it careful consideration. Anyway, gotta go. Gotta post my votes.

Yeah, I know about Bonnee. I tend to lurk before I post to boards. I lurked here for several months reading through the back postings before leaping to the forefront (not the Lexx threads admittedly, cos I’d never seen it til I came here).

The point I was trying to make wasn’t really centered around Bonnee. He/she (?) was just a convenient point of reference. Probably a bit too convenient.

I, for one, will not condemn someone unless I know the intent behind the action. That’s not me being judgemental on everyone else, saying that you’re (that’s a general you, not a specific one) wrong for speaking out against such action. But I do know that on occasions I have inadvertantly caused upset by playing devils advocate for the sake of a rousing debate (ok, let’s call a spade a spade – argument!). On one occasion I upset a number of people cos I was arguing pro-racism. Something completely contrary to my beliefs, but I didn’t agree with the arguments that the other person was raising. So I lept into the opposing position to force that person to question the thought process behind what they were saying (yeah, pretentious I know, but I was a student at the time).

It’s not what people say but the sentiment behind it I take issue with. If someone can prove to me that Bonnee is a malicious ******* who’s soul purpose was to **** people off for no reason, fine count me in on any witch hunt that ensues. Until then I will reserve judgement.

Incidentally, that was not a request for floods of posts highlighting his/her short comings. I really don’t give that much of a toss. Especially if he has been booted (has he, or is that just a rumour?). As I said at the top of the thread, I bare no ill will to any here, quite the opposite in fact. I’m completely down with the Big Sad’s (ADM – yeah, made me chuckle too) “We are family” comment in ‘AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!’. It’s not even about the bitching. Bitching is good, as long as bad feeling isn’t carried around as a result of it. I believe in free and frank discussion (as long as no-one says bad things about me ).

So big hugs and sloppy kisses all round.

Yeah, but look on the bright side… We got in three good posts before we got off topic.

And it’s not Christmas without a good arguement.

So every body hug, mumble platitudes about not wanting to hurt each other and get over it. That came over slightly harsher than I intended, but what the hell. It’s typed now.

Force 9 will be able to handle the ASP, PHP4 and mySQL, but we’re not sure about the CGI tho (but if they are running mySQL they should do CGI too). They are pretty reliable and not too expensive (cheapest reliable ADSL access I’ve found). Dunno about space, but the bandwidth shouldn’t be a problem. You can find them at Force9.com.

Alternatively Easynet will do the lot for you, but will not be cheap. They’re at Easynet.com.

AVOID DEMON LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!! They are not cheap anyway, but have recently been bought out. In an attempt to reduce overheads they have (so I have been told) chosen to axe a large number of their technical staff. As a result their service is doing a great impression of a yo-yo, and phone support technicians are more elusive than Nessie.

There will be others, but I have no knowledge of their reliability, etc.

Alternatively, ADSL and host it yerself. Cheapest option yet, but more work for you.

How the hell do the gloves work? Or rather what do they actually do? How can they simulate the feel of a non-existant object?

If you mean it’s like you can feel the car (i.e. it feels solid when you wave your hand in the direction of the virtual motor), how? Without some sort of attachment that would restrict the movement of your arm, giving the illusion of your hand touching a solid object, your arm would keep moving and go straight through your virtual dream car.

If you mean it just simulates the textures of the material ‘n’ stuff, I refer you to my previous question (that was ‘How?’ if you weren’t paying attention).

The only way I have seen this done effectively was using a table of ‘pins'(like the executive toys that you can press your face into and leave the shape for all to see). Each pin was connected by hydraulics to a computer controller. The computer could simulate different surfaces, but only things like bumps, curves, etc. It didn’t alter the feel of the surface, just the shape. Quite flash at the time (a few years ago I think), and rather pointless (too expensive and bulky with a small effective area for any real application).

I know that you can get VR suits that will apply pressure to various areas of the body (no you perv’s, not that sort of suit. Get your minds out of the gutter) by inflating small air pockets. But I can’t see that giving you anything close to realistic feeling VR.

Baring in mind I’m no scientist (got a U in my Chemistry O’s, then went on to get a job as a chemist – of sorts… go figure)… Ions do not need to be harder than steel to rip it appart. Throw a lump of Blu Tack at a wall and you get a squidged lump. But give it enough velocity and it’ll punch a hole right through. As ADM said (and he sounded more like a scientist to me), it’s all down to the amount of energy the object has.

One thing that has always puzzled me though. Water is jam packed full of impurities. Distil it and the impurities get left behind. Makes perfect sense to me. But you, apparantly, get the same result if you de-ionize it (or is it ionize it? No I think it’s de-). HOW??? It’s still the same water in the same bottle. So where has all the crap gone? How did it get out? Or is it just some crazy scam to get you to buy bottles of the same stuff that comes out the tap in the vague hope that this will help stop your iron from getting knackered quick?

Yeah. I watched the footage on TV, and was quite chuffed that I hadn’t driven right across the country for a bit westcountry anti-climax. I heard that the temperature drop and the birds stoppin’ singing was a bit freaky though. Got a pretty good view of the ‘bite’ out of the sun through a bin bag from just outside sunny Margate tho’.

I heard a rumour that Turkey, late 2003 is the next accessible one. I may well be there. Depends on how much holiday I can swing next year. It’ll be tough cos I’m off to Vegas in Feb. YAYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! Still, who needs to go and see the family… They can phone me and look at photo’s can’t they?

WTF happened to my last post??!!! God I hate computers.

Ah well. I’ll just have to retype summink similar.

I used to do a fair amount of online gaming. Mainly Halflife CS, cos my bro loved it, so we used to meet up on line and go and whup some serious ass. Also UT and JK.

Don’t so much now tho cos I got seriously hacked off with lag on a 56k. Still, in the new year I think I’ll be going for ADSL. When that’s in… your on.

These days we generally play on LAN. The current games of choice?…

UT2k3 – ****’s all over UT. Totally great. Bloody wants to be with an install that big!!

MW4 – ROCKS!!! Summink very satisfying stomping around in a huge robot, blowing your mates limbs off.

Star Lancer and Freespace 2 – I love space flight sims (I used to be virtually unstoppable in a tie fighter in XvT). But my game port isn’t working, so the joystick is out at the moment. One day I’ll get round to fixing it.

AvP2 – Ahhhhhhhh. Dropping from the ceiling and ripping the face off a marine is even more satisfying than blowing yer mates limbs off.

Operation Flashpoint and Ghost Recon – I’m gagging to get a group of people together for some co-op bashes at this. If you guys are up for it let me know, we can sort summink out (after ADSL that is)

And saving the best til last…

Battlefield 1942 – If you haven’t got it yet, stop reading this and go… NOW!!!!! The best FPS frag fest fun I have had in many a moon. I cannot recommend this game enough. you can leap into tanks, jeeps, planes (they even have a b52 that you can fly), boats (that’s aircraft carriers and destroyers!!! Big boys toys). It is so diverse… GET IT!!! GET IT NOW!!!!

Oh, and as a final note. If you haven’t got it already, grab a copy of ‘the All-seeing eye’. You can download it easily from many places (Google will point you to where). It beats Game Spy on almost every point.

Yeah! Chears. I never have the time to delve too deeply into stuff like that, but am always interested. I’m gagging to see a full solar eclipse. That is one of the things I fully intend to see before I die. I couldn’t get time off work for the recent one in the UK, so couldn’t get down to the south east to really experience it. Doubt I’ll catch the next one either, seeing as it’ll only be viewable from the antarctic (or is it t’other one?).

So yeah… anything you post would be most gratefully received.

Ahh, I’m pleased we’ve all made up. Doesn’t look good for the prospect of universal harmony tho, if we’re ripping into each other about a subject we all seem to agree on (at least on some level).

    Back to the question.

Unfortunately, Trekkie bashing has become an international sport. Like so many other “sad” minorities (roleplayers, trainspotters, computergeeks, birdwatchers, et al), it is a method that the “Norms”, or people who consider themselves none-sad, use to make themselves more secure. Look at any aspect of society and you will see one set of people ****ting on another with the attitude of “at least I’m not that bad”. It’s their way of making themselves feel better about their mundane lives.

Sadly the media panders to the masses, not the minorities, so don’t expect to see balanced, intelligent, well presented trekkies (or is ‘ers’ the accepted title), roleplayers, birdwatchers, etc. represented in the media. If the world saw you or I standing up and putting over a well balanced arguement for any of our chosen “minority” passtimes, they wouldn’t have the moment of smug superiority. No feeling of improved self worth, no interest. No interest, no viewing figures. That sort of show would only be of interest to people already into their subject, and by default part of that ‘minority’.

What the button pushers seem to have overlooked is that each of the ‘minority’ groups mentioned here have ‘kin billions of members across the globe. But while the Norm’s keep laughing, and the trekkies(ers) refrain from making their feelings known (by pushing the arsehole’s teeth down his throat, or some less confrontational method if you prefer), the media will keep on dishing out the bigotry.

As far as I’m concerned (rant nearly over… promise), anyone who is so into his interest that they get a thrill out of it is OK by me and should allowed to get on with it and enjoy life in their own way (within limits. If it doesn’t hurt anyone else..).

It’s got to be better than the highlights of your week being Ethel showing up on ‘stenders, or waiting to see if one of the housemates gets bored enough to try buggering one of the chickens in BB.

I say GET A LIFE!!!! BE SAD!!!

The problem you are havin is due to the font. Pay attention kids, this is the science bit… The font being used here is a proportional font Each of the letters, and punctuation including spaces, are different widths. This makes it much nicer to look at and easier to read (Thanks Saddy, for thinking about our poor tired eyes, and providing us with a nice gentle font – See? He really cares). Unfortunately these bits we get to type in use a fixed width font (each of the letters and punctuation take up the same amount of space). So all your spaces are there, it’s just they are shorter than they appeared when you typed them in. Just wap in more spaces and you’ll be fine.

I believe (and young Mr Geezer can correct me if I’m wrong) that the sig will be picked up from whatever you have set in your profile and display it live. So if you change your sig it will change it on the threads that are already there. So have a go, and look an old thread to see what the result is. You should get it sorted soon (as a rough guess, try using 3 spaces for every 2 that you did have).

And at this point I realise that this has nothing to do with HHG, so I’ll get my coat.

Oh, before I go (still unrelated…soz), what sort of robots? Big hulking ones for beating the smeg out of other robots on certain TV shows? Or ones that will benefit mankind in ways other than providing mindless, violent and strangly entertaining distraction to the masses?

Close with the sig, a bit of a tweak and it’ll work.

Hi. Hows it goin. If you want to introduce yourself to all, the pub is the place to do it. There is a thread in there for the purpose.

Yeah, I thought the Radio series was better than the TV show, and the books better than both. Not that I’ve read them all, but he is a damn good writer.

Oh, and Saddy is right about the DVD. Exceptional value for money. Trust me it’s more than a few extras. Agreed it’s not cheap, especially if your on a budget. And a lot of the extra’s will only appeal to a hardcore anorak, but from what you say above, I’d say you qualify there. But if you do have the spare cash (oh, and a DVD player is handy too), you could do a lot worse than buy it. then you could knock out your vids, get back a bit of cash and free up some space on your shelves. Everyone’s a winner.

I think, on the whole, everyones first Doctor is their favourite. Mine was Peter Davidson on both counts.

As for the episode… I couldn’t tell you. I can never remember the names. My ex housemate was an avid fan and had nearly all of the released eps on video. I sat and watched them all over a three month period.

I like ‘The Caves of Androsani’ (just to make myself a liar there), and the one that was basically a bunch of war games run in seperate zone by the Darleks (I think). Trouble is there are so many good eps, it’s tough trying to isolate the ones that rated higher.

I remember seeing Blake’s 7 when it was first shown in the UK. Superb. It has dated BADLY, but so has Star Wars to a certain degree…

I don’t think it was as good after Blake left (he decided he was losing credability as a serious actor or something so he jacked it in). The veiwing figures started to drop of a bit so they tried a few things to regain interest, but they didn’t really work out. It’s one of those series that started great, but they didn’t know where to take it or how to maintain the story (and I may be being over critical here, especially when compaired to some of the arse scrapings we get today).

Check out the first series!!! It’s on vid (and DVD now I think). The second series starts off ok, but drops. But the finale is TOP quality entertainment. They pulled out all the stops and made up for the… um… parts of less excellence in the 2nd series. One of the best last eps I have seen!!!

Not the sort of mistake you want to make if your not a fan of really rather sick stories. He sure is a twisted puppy. Don’t believe me? Read the Wasp Factory. Amazing book, extemely unpleasent, but a superbly written story.

And if they did I would make it my personal mission to find the names of each of the people resposible for that decision, go round to their homes and express in a polite, but firm manner how disappointed I was with their choice. That’d show em.

Ah, Mr Bunny. (sorry saw Bond at the weekend and I’ve been all Blofelt eversince). I believe we have butted frags on occasions in the past. Hydra66 certainly rings bells.

Yup, this is info that has already come to light on the UK airings. Still confused, but thanks anyway.

I think Red is just being plain daft. Sinister, pale, sunken faced boney guy in evil looking leather outfit. Locked up and hated by everyone else on the ship. What is she missing here? She’s either got her loins in a knot over him, or there is something else that has yet to come to light. Gotta be.

But neither of them are the ones that concern me the most. What is the deal wrinkly, 3 eyed mad woman (have you spotted that I’m not good with names, yet)? Am I the only one that thinks there is something definately wrong here? Yes, she may just be there as a source for the mystical input that Zann used to have, or maybe for wry laughs, but that just strikes me as shallow character development which just doesn’t ring true.

N.B. I have missed some Eps, so if what I’m wibbling about has been cleared up in one of those, please tell me.

That was the US release date, in case any of you weren’t aware, and give a damn. The UK date was the 28th Oct. And I’d been told that it wasn’t coming out in the UK! Filthy LIES I say!!!

It is absolutely fantastic. It has all of the music from the episode, even the incidental stuff with none of the dialogue over the top. Plus the bits mentioned by young Mr Geezer, above. The booklet is less ‘let’ and more ‘book’. With interesting stuff that can be read by those that can read. The best bit? Full listings of the lyrics. So even a complete muppet like myself could manage to maintain a small amount of credibility whilst singing along (yeah, ok. Blatant lie). My only excuse, we had been drinking for several hours. We thought our 5 part harmonies were tight… The neighbours didn’t agree.

The down side? You can’t get the bloody tunes out of your head!!! EVER!!!!

If you haven’t got it yet, but thought that the episode is what that Logie Baird bloke invented the box for, you will not be disappointed.

So waddya reckon? A plethora of school productions of it in the next year or two?

The typing isn’t my problem. It’s the feeble brain. When you get to my age the mind starts to … um… what was I saying?

Jeremiah sounds good tho. I’m a sucker for the post apocalyptic vision. Even the worst kind of B movie will suck me in. Who am I trying to kid. A bloody test card will suck me in. TV is EVIL!!!

I say go for it. Give them as much grief as you can be bothered to dish out. Trading Standards are always good for a shot if you feel that your consumer rights have been infringed. Not sure in this case, as you have just had **** poor service (I say ‘just’…). But you could always write to them to see if they can help. Or try the Citizens Advice Bureau. They’d be able to tell you the best way to make waves. Too many time people with legitimate aggrievances get ignored cos the complaints procedures are too conveluted or indistinct. So when ever I have a complaint that I feel strongly about, I complain long and loud to anyone who will listen (and several who won’t). Twice! If you are lucky you get a result before you get bored.

I disagree with this point. I don’t think it is the developers or the conceptual creative teams. I think it is the financial backers, and I’m guessing that this also applies in Hollywood, but on a much bigger scale. I believe that the people who hold the purse strings are the chauvinists. They are the ones that give the project the final go ahead, and if they don’t think they will get a suitable return on their investment they will shut it down. If they think that the male adolescent is their target audience and will provide bigger sales they will tend to go for projects that will support this.

The games world and the TV companies seem to be getting the message slowly, but Hollywood is entrenched. The backers are in it for the cash only and still believe that the ‘sex sells’ motto only applies to blokes.

I think a female ‘Bond’ type character would sell, but only if the production company put the same money and care into the film. The chances of this may be better than they ever were, but I’m still not gonna hold my breath.

Way to make myself sound like a hardcore capitalist.

That is an absolute joke. They really are taking the ****. Personally I would put the metaphorical boot in. If it an independent News Agents, or part of a chain? If it is part of a chain, I’d write a polite but terse letter to the head office detailing the ballsups from start to finish (the more detail and notes on the agrivation that you have suffered the better). Also, write to their suppliers directly, if you can find out who they are, to see if they will substanciate the newsagents claim. Also write to the publishing house expressing how dissatisfied you are with the whole mess, turn on the water works and ask if they can be of any assistance. You never know you may be able to wangle a free subscription or summink.

Oh, if it’s an independent newsagents… um… firebomb the place? No, that’s naughty. Just **** through their letterbox on your way back from the pub each night.

Whatever you do don’t let the b’stards get away with it!!!! And I thought the customer was always right…

Absolutly brilliant!!! The Police had it designed, built and used it for many year. Some bod in the Beebs props department thought it looked cool, and now the Beeb hold the rights to it. A true tribute to the power of the media. I shall be going home tonight with a wry grin on my face.

Oh god. I’m sorry. Did no one warn you? I saw it fairly soon after it was released. Then again several years later just to make sure. Yes, it really is that bad. A serious dissapointment. I like the McGann lads as a rule, and I don’t think he did a bad job with what he was given. Sadly the plot sucked various kinds of excrement, the supporting cast were obviously shanghai’d from the woodentops (in joke for old Brits) and it just felt wrong. The scale was too big. The inside of the Tardis was huge (yeah, I know. Just leave it, ok?). The characters just rattled around in empty sets.

I now feel guilty for not warning you before. For anyone who hasn’t yet…

DON’T DO IT. YOU’LL JUST FEEL DIRTY AND USED!!!!

This is probably a redundent comment… But the king of the dodgy Sci-fi B movie has got to be ‘Plan 9 from Outer Space’. No other film has quite equalled the flapping cardboard scenery, although the original Star Trek’s, Dr Who and neighbours have had a good bash. I know neighbours is not widely considered to be sci-fi, but you cannot seriously expect me to believe that all of the ‘actors’ are from this planet!!!

So for me, the biggest cliche for the age of the classic B movie has got to be the unintentionally animate sets. Oh, and ham acting… back to neighbours again.

I was concerned about the fish comment, so I decided to do some research. I spent half an hour standing outside my local chippie, ‘interviewing’ people as they came out with their tasty fish suppers. Not one of them thought that they, and their pieces of succulent fish would coexist for more than about half an hour. But most anticipated thoroughly enjoying their brief period of coexistence, as long as they hadn’t run out of ketchup. I guess George ‘dubbleyuh’ must be more of a ‘steak and kidney pie’ man, or perhaps he prefers a bit of savaloy. It would have been a more in depth study, but the Police were quite insistant that it moved along.

The only conclusion I could draw, is that Bill is in fact a lover of the pie. Whether it be steak and kidney, minced beef or the good ol’ chicken and mushroom, we have not as yet ascertained (steps are being taken for further investigation to take place in Washington). This is the only reasonable explanaition for the ‘Make the Pie higher’ comment.

I think you’re right (Goliath, not Garth). But the Trucks I’ve been wittering on about was a series in it’s own right. Not a leather clad, second rate crooner in sight.

As for who piloted Blue Thunder… I’d got it into my head that it was Roy, but it was many years ago, and my poor, aged noggin is somewhat addled by far too much sex ‘n’ drugs ‘n’ Rock ‘n’ Roll in the intervening years. Could have been anyone… Except Aunt Flo. She was definately in Bod (no… I am not trying to get a thread devoted to either Bod or the tv of my youth. Honest)

As for Manimal… A house cat, a snake, a hawk and a black panther. What do I win? OK, I couldn’t remember the cat or the snake, and you’d already mentioned the hawk and the Panther. But I did have to go and look it up myself, to get them all right. Any brownie points for that?
