The sad truth is that people ACTUALLY watch those saturday night movies, and worse still in (relatively) large numbers. I don’t understand it myself. Personally I feel dumber after just watching one of those commercials! As best I can figure the main audience is:
[list][*]families (parents with kids who are too young to realize this stuff is unoriginal low budget garbage)
    [*]stoners
    [*]people imitating MST3K
[*]channel loyalists (losers with nothing better to do)
[*]those unfortunate bastards who’s TV are stuck on the Sci Fi channel
    [/list:u]
Sci fi Channel really could do better, without much effort. But they choose not to for whatever reason. As long as the tim eslot pulls in the desired ratings/demographics they won’t put much more into it. Unless of course they want a higher rating.
Really, I could care less. It’s not my network, nor my money. And more to the point,;I have better things to do on a Saturday night then watch the Sci Fi Channel!

Ok, guilty as charged. I fall under the following catagories:

    [*]people imitating MST3K
[*]channel loyalists (losers with nothing better to do)

Whenever I stay home on Saturday night, I will check out the weekly fiasco on the Sci-fi channel. Unless, of course, there is a ball game of some sort that I’d rather watch. Anyway, it’s mainly because I hate most other programming so much that I will turn to sci-fi on a Saturday night. Plus it’s good “background” entertainment ’cause I’m usually on the computer spewing my propaganda (like now) or reading or something.

Also, to me it is like supporting you’re favorite sport’s franchise. You stick with them during the sh*tty seasons when they suck (Raptor Island et al) and when they’re good (BSG Re-Imaged.)
    I’m just fanatical, I guess. ๐Ÿ˜›

The question before the asembled throng is: What type of sci-fi turns you on?
    a) The hard stuff with the accent on science, in the mode of Larry Niven, Issac Asimov or Robert Heinlin
    B) Accent on the fiction where you take FTL travel as read, no need for explanations like BSG, Star Wars et al
    c) Suspend reality totally as long as the story works like Lexx and Farscape.

    All opinions welcome.

To answer you question, I would say B) and C), but not A).

I am not opposed to the “hard” sci-fi, I just have not taken the time to read it and the visual stuff is few and far between. My reading actually consists of non-fiction works- history, business, instructional, or hobby-related stuff.

Anyway, best of luck on your efforts. I can’t recall from the thread but will you be posting the fruits of your labor here for our reading pleasure?

Thanks for digging that up…I didn’t know which episode it was but I figured it was an early season like the 2nd or 3rd.

I think the Douwd are not as powerful as the Q because Kevin (the Douwd) did not restore his wife to life after she was killed by the Husnock. He loved her so much so I believe he would have. But maybe he could have but chose not to? He was a strong pacifist, but he also seemed incredibly “fatalistic.” I’m not sure if that is the right word but Kevin’s disposition seemed to be, “Well, what happens, happens. I cannot interfere.” It’s been a while since I’ve seen this ep so I can’t recall all of the details.

Anyway, it’s small potatos…he’s immortal and has great powers nonetheless. And anyone who can whack 50 billion people with one thought is pretty strong in my book.

Interesting quote by Picard, though. “I’m not qualified to judge you, but maybe the Q are.”

I heard there was a Star Trek book where it was confirmed that Trelane was a part of the Q Continuum, but I don’t think it’s canon. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Q idea came from his character (still there were several powerful races in Star Trek TOS — Apollo, the cat witch lady, that guy who gave the kids powers (a gorgon?), and one that gave a human boy called Charlie powers).

Nice tid-bit…I love the Q. Spreaking of powerful characters, there was a pretty powerful guy (being) in ST: TNG. He lived on a planet that had been “cleansed” of all living things except for he and his wife and their little plantation. Turns out he was so powerful, he wiped out an entire civilization with a single thought. I think it was the alien race that eradicated the planet he lived on. That mellowed him out so he tried to lead a reserved existence. I often wondered what would happen if he and the Q crossed-paths, or if they were like peers or something.

Definately remember the “Charlie X” episode- I saw it about six months ago as a matter of fact. There’s a scene where Charlie goes on a rampage with his powers aboard the Enterprise after his feelings are hurt. In one instance, he makes some female crewman’s face disappear. That really freaked me out when I was a kid.

Anyway, sorry to have gotten off topic…er, uh, ST:TMP rules.

Wasn’t there an episode from TOS that had a similar story? It was abount an old Earth probe called NOMAD. The probe, drifting for centuries in space, happened upon an advanced race of machines who repaired the probe, upgraded it significantly, and sent it on its way. Kirk and the crew found it, beamed it aboard, and quickly realized the once simple probe had morphed into a powerful, cold, supra-logical being.

Funny…NOMAD was actually a cheap, funny-looking prop that I wanted to just kick the hell out of. I’m glad ST:TMP revisited the storyline (on the whole) and did such a good job doing it.

Yeah, it’s a little slow at times and it’s a long movie as well (2 1/2 hours?) I remember really not likeing this movie when I was a kid and throughout my teenage years. I saw the movie again in my mid- 20’s and had a different view, though, because I was really intrigued by the story of how Earth’s Voyager probe could have travled so far, evolved so much, and still want to come home to complete it’s mission. And seeing the poor old, beat-up Voyager probe towards the end of the movie sent a little chill up my back and is enough to make any techno-geek choke-up (IMHO!!!) ๐Ÿ˜ณ

    Some of my comments/ thoughts:

*My wife and I also wondered where the “Cloud 9” liner came from. We looked at each other like “WTF??? Where did that come from?” Not only is it very large and uniquley shaped but it is also the most luminous ship (so far) that we’ve seen. Maybe they’ll introduce a “party” ship later on as in TOS, but with bright disco lights and strobes. I agree with Headgehog that it is simply a device to have outdoor scenes.

*I know some other posters have likened this first season to the first season of “24.” This ep really gave me that feeling as there was so much going on. I have only seen this ep once and will definately watch it several more times.

*Headgehog, I also like how you keep us up-to-date on Starbuck’s resume: sniper/ marine/ interragator/ Sun Tzu/ security specialist. Does she cook?

*This ep also gave me a solid number to work with as far as figuring out the timeline. Helo says that he’s been on Caprica for 46 days (I believe), so we can safely conclude that a month and a half has elapsed since the 12 colonies were nearly wiped out. There were probably other clues or outright mentions of this in prior eps, but I either missed them or forgot them.

*Helo- has there ever been a more pitiful character than this? The only redeeming aspect of his situation on Caprica is that he was there with Boomer2 and that he was totally spankin’ that a$$. Now that he’s figured out that she’s a cylon, he doesn’t even have that. The scene of him fleeing Delphi is almost funny, in a twisted way.

This review really had me laughing (with the reviewer, not at him.) Oh where to begin? How about the new pilots:

“Meanwhile Starbuck is debriefing the new pilots, who are in dire need of personality and a name like Black Widow Squadron, or Hells Hornets, or heck anything! Adama approaches Starbuck and promotes her from Sniper/Interrogater/Pilot to unofficial Lt. Colonel/Military Advisor position by asking her to join the tactical briefing.”

I agree that the new pilots need more pizazz. I think even in TOS the squadrons had “color” designations like gold, blue etc (someone please correct if I’m wrong on that.) I guess since they’re newbs we’ll have to settle for anonymous pilots and Starbuck busting there balls at every turn.

This leads me to ask: What do we know of the other pilots? All I know are Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, Crashdown, Hot Dog, um, er, uh… I seem to forget the others but what about you guys? Oh, of course I cannot forget Helo. Also, I’d like to nominate “Chuckles” for coolest death-scene so far. Way to go, Chuck. Hell’s Hornets, indeed.

Also one of my biggest beef’s till this point is how far they (Moore/ the powers that be) have stacked the odds against the good guys. I honestly don’t see how much longer the viper fighters can last before they are all wiped out. Take this last ep, for example. BSG sends Strike Force 1 (or whatever it was called) which consisted of what? 7 – 10 vipers? The cylons counter with 50, plus another 40 or so for the decoys. I have a feeling my details may be somewhat off but you get the gist. And on top of all that Cyclon technology is superior and continues to frustrate the colonial fighters. And further still, you have guys like “Chuckles” and “Fireball” (not a good name, BTW) as your wingmen. Ok, Ok. So I’m riding “Chuckles” a little too hard, and no, I don’t blame all this on him. Anyway, mabe the colonials will start cranking out vipers left and right or perhaps come into some new technology that will give them an edge.

Is “BSG- Reimaged” the best show on TV? I don’t know but for this cat I can honestly say that this is the only show I will not miss without fail during any given week.
I also follow pretty regularly the Charlie Sheen comedy “2 1/2 men” and the med drama “House” with Hugh Laurie of old “Blackadder” fame. To be honest I was suprised as hell when I saw his face show up on an American show and only watched the first episode because of him (he even loses his British accent for the character.) The show is in fact good entertainment and I try to follow it as regularly as I can.
Anyway, BSG is a pleasure to watch and I hope more (non-sci-fi) people give it a shot. Just look at how deep this cast is and the relationships/ arcs we have. There are even a couple of episodes (and I have just seen thru “Six Degrees…”) where Baltar and Six barely have roles at all, so the show does a great job “spreading the wealth” as far as development goes.
Question: does anyone see a character or group of characters and think,” Oh God, not him/her/them again.” ???

There is always an interest in remakes and with the Star Trek Universe going into prequels, how would the assembled throng think of a remake of Star Trek TOS using today’s special effect techniques?

I could see some significant changes to the storylines though: fewer micro skirts for the female crew and no soft focus on Yeoman Rand and Nurse Chapel. I could see some of the old storylines needing a big rethink like Harry Mudd but the idea could tie up Enterprise to TOS to TSG et al as well as to the films. At the moment there is a big disjoint between all the components and not just in FX quality.

I am one of the REALLY OLD sad geezers and remember watching the original pilot (before Kirk) and being absolutely gob-smacked. There was no other topic of conversation at school the following day. I would welcome a sympathetic makeover of the original classic.

I don’t think that we have seen the last of sci-fi based in outer space, but I do think it will be a couple of years before we see another “Trek”/ “Babylon 5” type show.

The smaller US networks (UPN, FOX, WB) are the only non-cable channels that would touch a sci-fi show like that, and I think that the very below-average performance of “Enterprise” may have left them looking at other genres for entertainment. And although not sci-fi, shows like “Smallville”, “Charmed” and the recently- premeried “Point Pleasant” may help fiill the void in the meantime.

I do not know what cable channels have planned in terms of sci-fi shows, but we may just have to rely on BSG (NOT a bad thing), re-runs and DVDs of other shows to satisfy our need for space-themed shows.

The Sci-Fi channel is probably content with its current new darling show and Friday line-up (and what a great line-up it is) so I am not expecting anything else from them as far as compelling new shows go. Perhaps you could take up a new interest in their low-buget, Saturday night flicks?

But you are right, there is a lot of bad shows on TV, especially the reality shows. Personally, I would like to see another “Lexx” type show for my late-night viewing pleasure. I am pretty sure I am alone in this

Ah yes, the Luxor. My sis and her fiance stayed there on our trip and I had a chance to spend some time there. I totally dig on the whole ancient Egyptian theme and being up close to the pyramid and replica sphynx etc was absolutely fantastic. They really did a good job on all the work on the replicas and art.

To tie this into sci-fi, one of the reasons I liked BSG (and SG-1 the movie and series) is because of the ancient Egyptian themes. To digress even further, I even once attended a lecture at my local astronomy club about ancient Egyptian archeo-astronomy (or something like that.) Anyway, the guy giving the lecture speculated that the Great Pyramid in Egypt, along with the other two next to it, symbolized the three stars that make up Orion’s belt. He superimposed a photo or chart of Orion’s belt with an aerial photo of the pyramids and there appeared to be a strong correlation. The thinking was that Orion (or whatever the Egytians called it) was considered an important grouping of stars that would rise above the Nile in the ancient night sky right-side up (like a person standing), and so the Egyptians built the pyramsids to honor Ra or do whatever it is they wanted to do.
We’ll probably never know exactly why they were built but it was a great lecture, to say the least. Good stuff all around, IMHO.

I bought a few things for theBrother at the gift shop, and I very much liked the ‘trekie’ snack shop and the odd drinks and dishes offered there. ๐Ÿ˜†

I too was amused by the food/ bar items for sale. With a subject matter as rich as ‘Trek’ it must have been a slam dunk coming up with all the names for their products. I would loved to have been part of the brainstorming process.

Also, thanks for the link and great pics of all the Lexxians having a good time. It bought back memories since I also stayed at the MGM so I can sympathize with the task of finding/ getting to one’s room in such a massive hotel.

I am in agreement with carup008’s original post. If ‘Enterprise’ is to go on successfully it cannot rely on the older characters no matter how popular they are. How old is Shatner, anyway? 70? I’d love to see that story line! ๐Ÿ˜†

This series is probably done soon, anyway. I still watch because I grew up on Trek and for a long time I was just a ‘meat and potatos’ kinda sci-fi fan. Then shows like ‘The Lexx’ came along I haven’t been the same since. Better late than never, I suppose. Anyway, I think the franchise should take a few years off after ‘Enterprise’ and regroup. A lot of people probably felt that way after ‘Voyager.’

Anywho, Kirk has been my idol ever since the day he butchered the Declaration of Independence. “We……THE PEOPLE!” (clenchs fist). Anyone who’s seen that ep, knows what I mean ๐Ÿ˜‰

Yes! That has always been a personal favorite ep of mine, and the ending was one of Shatner’s finest moments ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, I was curious- what’s the story with Kirk’s “special lighting” in TOS? Whenever the camera focuses on him there is often a shadow on his forehead and by his chin and mouth but a streak of light in the middle of his face. Anyway, I was watching TOS Sat. AM and was thinking about it. I was reminded of a SNL skit with ‘Barbara Walters’ and her special filter, if anyone can recall that.

Anyway, I don’t post here often but I really love the site!

Metallica’s “Fade to black” has a post-apocolypse feel to it, I always thought, and is just a great song.

On the lighter side, Europe’s “The final countdown” is definately apocolyptic. Anyone remember that tune? It’s pretty corny…humanity heading to Venus (not sure why) and the line about being light-years away. I can’t help but feel nostalgic whenever I hear it, though.

Hello all…I thought I’d chime in with my two cents.

“Trailer Park Boys” (I belive that’s the title) is a show that I’ve enjoyed recently. It currently airs on BBC America and it’s basically a faux reality show a la “Cops” that follows daily life in a Canadian trailer park. Naturally, hilarity ensues at every turn thanks to the wacky characters who are often found stone-drunk in the middle of the street after a two-day bender. Good stuff if you enjoy this sort of humor, along with the many <Beep> sound edits due to salty language.

Another Canadian show I like is “The Industry”, which I would watch on PBS on late nights. I don’t think they have aired it in the last year but it was a fantastic series about the treacherous employees of a small Canadian production company trying to get ahead in the cutthroat movie industry. Side-splitting plots and great characters.

It interesting to see how much quality programming comes out of Canada. I am not Canadian, by the way, but I do think their humor and creativity is severely underrated (or maybe it’s just that I’m the only one who hasn’t noticed before and so the joke is on me.) And yes, I do know about John Candy, Jim Carrey et al.

Hey LexxLurker. I’ll definately look out for this TV guide issue to see what made the cut. I would think “The Simpsons” made the list because it’s a ‘cult’ list and not striclty sci-fi. I guess that may be splitting hairs for those folks, though. Hell, I don’t know. I’m pretty new to this site and being a “regular” on a message board if you can believe that.
I wonder if “Battlestar Galactica” made the list. I have no doubt its stock will rise once the new series comes out next year.

    P.S.
As I write this I anxiously await the “Whit Trash” episode of Lexx, which comes on at 3am in TX.

“Gimme Three steps” by Lynard Skynard would suite Stan nicely.

I too enjoy watching Lexx. I grew up on Trek but Lexx is truly something different. About the closest thing too it (in my opinion) is Dr. Who in terms of pure fanasy and imagination. Of course, Lexx really ups the ante with its blatant sexual themes and twisted humor (and graphics, lest I forget.)

I stay up all night on Fridays (early Sat) to watch it at 3 and 4am.
