     heya, been good thanks.

Yes, I’m actually looking forward to the new Dr Who myself.  Really like this new one, much better than DT.

Been a bit dissapointed with the latest batch of sci fi films.  Good luck!

Funniest post I’ve seen in ages 🙂

So, you want us to donate some money to you for funding your attempt at a LEXX revival using your own scripts?  And you have the backing of 3 of the key actors…. Awsome!

    I almost believe you.

(I’ll probably keep the links in for a little while so you can checkout the site for some fun.  I’m not normally so generous with scam posts, but what thehell, it might actually be true! 😀 )

You can see a really crappy copy in 6 parts on youtube.

Lots of peeps have asked for a dvd (or included on the series box set as an extra) but since it was made befre the series, by a different channel (UK Channel 4) – in a different country, getting the rights sorted out was always going to be difficult.

Worse still, the tv film was made in the 80’s when those new-fangled video camera’s were beginning to be used.  unfortunately, the quality suffered a lot especially when you compare it to film recorded tv shows of say the seventies.  The technology needed to restore such a show would probably put people off  producing a dvd and this is what may be holding up the release.

Lots and lotsof people are asking for it though (googled it for some info) so eventually, Channel 4 (or whoever owns the rights at the moment) may decide to do something.  All you can do in the meantime is look for a torrent of it somewhere.

Yes, i saw it, I thought it was great!

Some of the things I really liked were at the beginning when they seemed to be going for an apartied slant that to be honest, seemed a bit too cliche.  Then it just turned into a rip-roaring sci fi film.  A lot different from the usual comic-holiwood stuff and really entertaining.

Those are great films.  If you liked those then you are a sci fi fan 🙂

    I woudl recommend:

    12 Monkeys

    American Astronaut

    2001

    La planète sauvage

    1984

Betelgeuse  or  Beetlejuice (called Beetlejuice but refered to in the film as the other one  :/  )

    Frequency

    Gattaca

    Idiocracy

Kin Dza Dza (via Google Video)

    Men in Black (1 & 2)

Serenity  (Film of the Firefly series)

    Fahrenheit 451

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

    Solaris (Russian version)

    Ghost in the Shell

Thats quite a varied list but defo worth checking out.

If youa re feeling very adventurous then the greatest Sci Fi film as voted by sci fi fans with their heads up the asses is the classic Russian film Stalker. It’s an awsome film but I don’t know anyone else that likes it  🙂

But there seems to be very littl enew stuff around which is irritating.  There isn’t anything with the story arc or forward thinking of Babylon 5 and nothing as whacky or out of the box as LEXX.  It may be just me, but I’m fining it hard to motivate myself to get back into tv sci fi again with so much dross on the box.

I watched the first season of Being Human and it was very popular in the UK.  I tnink they are currently airing the third here now.

It’s ok I guess, but I got the feeling it was trying to humanise itself by becoming a soap opera and haven’t managed to get around to season 2 eps yet.  I probably will, I’m just not in a rush.

I try and get rid of my puter every 2 years. Even that doesn’t seem short enough sometimes. I play games tho, so find that the pc runs out of power every time Intel brings out a new cpu.

Sounds like you could do with a gamers pc (memory, graphics and speed). The alienware is something that I’ve been drooling over for a while. Del is niiiice 🙂 I’m tempted to get alienware mid range gamer pc and fit it with an SSD (will improve speed by about 100% minimum).

Personally, the biggest boost I’ve seen for a pc that can be bought relatively cheaply is an SSD (Solid State Drive). It helps to speed up the computer two, three even four times! It’s an awesome investment, but I recommend getting an SSD for your OS and games and storing files like vids and pics and media on another drive as the cost of the bigger SSD’s is prohibitive.

Nice to hear from you M, Hope yer well and happy 🙂

Currently working on a recommended section.  I’ll probably set up a forum for peeps to add their recommended viewing (either currently) or fave shows of the past.

Initially though,  I’ll set up a recommended block on the left of each page which will randomly show current shows that we recommend with a link to the video.  We could even have three or four of these being displayed randomly each time the page is loaded.

A planetary attack is going to be either out and out distruction or aimed at occupation.

I cant think of a defence against out and out destruction, such as attack could be any thing from bombing usung any type of material (boi, concussive, heat…. anything).  But what would be the point.  Such destruction wouldn’t be profitable as the huge cost would need to be re-couped somehow.

If the attack were occupational then the attacker would need troup carries and all the transport paraphinalia and that means slower less manouverable ships.  Bettwe still, a defencive force to attack when the ship is landing and more vulnerable would be even better.

Personally, I would say the cheapo defence would be explosives used in a range of ways:  Tagetting the large ships as they slowed down to enter the planets atmosphere, when they landed.  Energy weapons could be deflected.

Also, the cheapo defence would engage in using the cheapest stuff they could, why blow a ship up with a huge bomb in space if you can just dissable it and let it drift.

To be honest though, I’ve never really thought of such a thing before.  Interesting topic!

    Hi everyone,

Great thread, and yes, I haven’t been on the site for a while. Too many real life issues (not serious, just working away a lot) and the total inability to get my head around the Drupal content management system.  It’s great if yer a geek, but I’m not as much of a geek as I thought I was  🙂

To that end, and because the site (though it doesn’t look it) is 98% completed, I’m hiring a consultant to get the content out of the secret places and into the open.

Content display will be improved and when I get back, I’ll be able to login more.  Until then, there isn’t much more I can do.  As Bonnee said in his opening comment, it’s not like there isn’t much to chat about, just getting the bloody text into the site would be nice.

    I’ll keep you guys posted.

in reply to: Our Sci-Fi Women #77764
    SadGeezer

I’m with aqua on much of this….. and hey Aqua, what the fuck is going on with the recent (or maybe not so recent) trend like in Supernatural where every beautiful woman dies – usually horribly – AND that’s a show aimed at women!!

I do notice that women in sci fi can, at times, lead active lead roles some of which can be, intelligent, interesting even overtly antagonistc to men and yet still very feminine.  In particular Zev/Xev from LEXX and Ivanova from Babylon 5.  Both series, but the series let you can explore the character more so than in a film.

Xev was portrayed as a sex slave yet she was far from submissive.  Ivannova played a hard nosed commander who broke down when a prospective lover was killed trying to save her life (those imortal lines, "and I never even boffed him…. sob, sob…")

Sci fi has grown up a lot since that prehiostoric film with wassername, erm… Raquel something.

And yet, the film that portrayed the woman of this geezers fantasy was (and I’m sure many other sadgeezers would agree), Barbarella.  Our heroine was a nieve, bimboesque sort of character that simply wouldn’t be allowed to be portrayed nawadays. And rightly so, If I saw a modern remake of Barbarella with the same personality, I’d be turned off and worse, dissinterested.  Modern female characters in sci fi are more interesting because our view of the female role in society has changed.  It’s possible now to have a strong female hero playing along a male wimp, it actually makes her more sexy!  Unheard of 20 years ago.

My missus very much appreciates her masculine husband, but god forbid I tell her to clean the house or wash the dishes if the kitchen is untidy!  And I (for my part) would expect her top organise things and take and equal role in important decisions – in fact I demand it!  (she didn’t watch me write this by the way 🙂

And sexually, hell – I have a fantasy about meeting a beautiful bimboesque female and taking her home to meet the wife!

I think (obviously this is from a male perspective) that men are less intimidated by strong female characters nowadays – especially in sci fi (writers can get away with a lot more in sci fi).

And yet… I godda say that space babes are very sexy.  I know, I know,  I was doing so well!!  But there seems to be something more interesting about a beautiful female character in an alien universe.  Sci Fi ladies seem more attractive (except of course in Battlestar Galactica – not countling the female robots of course – god forbid!).

I wonder if that is because sci fi babes are far less attainable to geezers and that is what makes them more interesting.

I dunno, and I’ve had too many beers.

    Barbaralla rules!!!

I’m not really a fan of Ron Moore either.  It would be really good though, for Cruise to be in something a little more meaty.  Mission Impossible and some of his other sci fi films can’t (imo) be ever considered cult.  Someone of his talent should try something less mainstream and more interesting.
