Cute Headge.

I am not a real Dune fanatic, but I have read and re-read all of the books, even the news ones being written right now. I have also watched all of the movies and mini series.

Having said that I have to admit that I have intoned the ‘Fear is a mind killer’ speech on occasion to theNeices when they were growing up. (Which just validated their feelings that Aunt is crazy.)

And I when people have discussed true artificial intelligence, I have told that that ‘We will not suffer thinking machines’.

My most ‘Dune’ moments come however when I do the ‘VOICE’ growl. 😀 Sadly, it does not work as well for me as it did for Jessica in the first movie. I mean it works…. but not every single time…. I must not have the pitch just right. I will just have to keep working on it I guess. 😉

I remember somewhere in an interview that MMM Twack said that starting out in school, he was always the actor who played the disaffected charcter. Which could be why Lexx was such a good fit for him, at least til he got tired of playing dead.

    But… I started to wonder.

You know what is really a weird thought? With the way the computer game animation is coming along, it may not be long before people will be able to make versions of their favorite shows. You would have to be really talented mind you, and have a mother of a big computer, but still, it will be possible.

In fact, it might be easier, after all if you were not making a game there would be no underlying game coding to worry about. All you would want would be the animation, background, dialog and music tracks. Bada Bing, Bada Boom, Bob’s your Uncle, we have us a new episode of ….. Lexx, or B5, Red Dwarf or whatever.

The weirder thing? As soon as this all becomes easier, someone will pretty it up add voice modules for this program or that and market it as enterainment software, “Tired of what is on TV? Create your own show!!” Best thing? Once they have you buying the main program, they could sell you add ons. “New this month! B5! Come back next month for our Buffy module!”

Me? I would predict a rush on the fan fic. 😀 There is a Harry Potter fic I would love to see done like that, and of course if it was easy enough I would like to see my Lexx fairy tale done up like that. 😀

Granted it would not be live action with the actors we have all come to know and love, but it would be fun. 😆
Is this sounding like one of those comic strips? “Knights of the Round Table” or the other Dark Tower one?? :)
I howled at DragonCon when I saw the line of gear and comic books called “Knights of the Dinner Table” I understand that at various times they have also had t-shirts, minatures and other fun stuff to go along with this comic. I had considered buying a few for theBrother, who sniffed hautily and informed me that he had read a few of them, and beside HARD CORE GAMERS made arrangement to play on real set ups and not a ‘dinner table.’

I will have to admit I have seen this. He long ago left the 4′ x 8′ foot table (which was as big as I would let him have when we shared a house) and now has an assortment of various tables that sit together to make quite a few configurations. I think his biggest is 3 connected 3′ x 8′. But on the plus side, when we do the family reunion this spring, I will NOT have to rent tables or chairs. I can just load his up and take them with me. 😉

Someone doesn’t know what d10 are? Perish the thought. In my family theBrother is so totally into gaming that we had bowls of dice sitting around the house like popcorn for crying out loud. Your true gamer of course have many, many, dice and many, many styles and denominations of them.

The one thing he did like about moving to Txas was that it wad geographicially easier to get together with other gamers. He is pretty bummed that we are missing DragonCon this year, but I am sure he will find a few other cons to attend.

Hope you have a blast at yours Trace. 😀
Pro’s Tip – Pro’s Tip: Make thumbnail-sketches of ALL characters great and small. Use an index card for each. It will help you keep track of them all and spell their names consistently throughout. List their: Name, age, sex, occupation, role in the story, and relationship to others in story. Give them at least two personality traits and their impact on the story. (Is s/he honorable, opinionated, humble, profane, cheerful, depressed…) Physical traits that have an impact on the story (very tall, limps, overweight, high voice, glasses, smoker…all have impact on who s/he is and how he reacts to other characters)

What does the character want the most?

How far is s/he willing to go to obtain it?

The latter two are the most important of all as they will nearly always dictate the course of your plot!
Coolness, now they are going to close a store rather than negotiate with their employees. Is that ballsy or what! Ya just gotta be in awe of a company that is willing to take the flak, bad publicity and potential lawsuits rather than comply with existing labor law. What will they do next? Human Sacrifice?
From Working Familys – The world’s largest retailer is choosing to destroy the livelihoods of nearly 200 working families rather than accept a fair and impartial agreement on workers’ wages and benefits.

Wal-Mart announced Feb. 9 it will shut down the Canadian store where workers had formed a union six months earlier to have a voice on the job. Workers at the Jonquiere, Quebec, store had been negotiating with Wal-Mart for several months, attempting to reach a fair agreement on wages and benefits. The company pulled the plug when workers appealed to the Quebec Labor Ministry to start a process to establish a wage and benefit settlement.

Please click the following link to sign the petition telling Wal-Mart’s CEO: Do the right thing. Reverse plans to close your store. And negotiate in good faith with Wal-Mart workers.

    www.unionvoice.org/campaign/walmart_accountable

The message from the world’s largest and wealthiest retailer to consumers, communities and workers worldwide is clear: Wal-Mart would rather close stores, eliminate workers’ jobs and make an entire community suffer than reach an agreement with workers for fair wages and benefits.

Please sign our petition to Wal-Mart’s CEO Lee Scott. Tell Mr. Scott to respect workers. Wal-Mart can’t shut down stores because it doesn’t want to pay workers fairly.

This is not just a fight for Wal-Mart workers. With Wal-Mart’s unprecedented size and growth—$280 billion in revenues last year—we are fighting for everyone. And this fight needs all of us, working together.

Click here to sign the petition:

    www.unionvoice.org/campaign/walmart_accountable

Together, as consumers and as activists, we have the power to stop Wal-Mart’s attack on workers—and to hold corporations accountable for Wal-Marting jobs. This is a battle about the kind of society we want to live in and the kinds of jobs we want our children to have. You can make a difference.
Sidhecafe recommends JMS’s ‘The Complete Book of Scriptwriting’ which she ordered from amazon. It’s over 400pp and covers writing for animation too. (Ed. Note – J.Michael Straczynski is the guy who did Babylon 5 and apparenly some stuff from He-Man and She-Ra here and there!)
We have also discussed a tip on writers avoiding the sperical condition.
P.N. “Pat” Elrod – Pro’s Tip: Fight “Writer’s Spread.”
The job requires a LOT of sitting and a lot of brain work, which usually translates into a ravenous writer at the end of a
session, then more sitting, which makes for a wide
butt. Make sure you get exercise. Put on some disco
music and be silly for three minutes or so just to get
    your blood moving!

Food. Keep a big bowl of fresh raw veggies ready
in the fridge and munch on them while you hammer
out the chapters. They’re good for you and you can
eat a lot of them with fewer “side” effects.
Yes, yes…. puting in the url would have worked too. but… that was so freaking long it made the page all wonky… so I will just bring the highlights of that thread here.
Logan recommend – Writing the Character Centered Screenplay by Andrew Horton

Logan went on to state – The book I suggested was only one of many that I read, or skimmed through when preparing my screenplay — just happened to see it lying around. The program didn’t help that much, I ended up creating my own templates in Word both for plays and screenplays which required different formats.

It’s really helpful to read through some screenplays too. It gives you a feel for the formatting and structure which is really important to do right, and style. I had a great little handout book (I studied it in school) that gave you all the basics for creating a screenplay — if I can find it I’ll get it scanned and email it to you since it proved invaluable.

To have a screenplay greenlit, which I haven’t by the way, you must adhere to strict standards — I won’t get into that much since there’s a lot to it. It’s useful to know the technical directions/jargon (e.g. CU, OS etc.), but unless you’re directing it yourself, it should be minimised since a director doesn’t like to be told their job — there are other descriptive ways to do it.

Aside from books, there’s plenty of info on the web.

As for my general experiences: Yeah, I approched it quite differently. I was focussed on first writing fiction, then short screenplays with all the technical directions (for directing oneself), then poetry, then stage plays, then TV show scripts, then screenplays over a couple of years. Each time I had to swich gears, and visualise it, tell the story, and express it in a different way. It’s important to have an idea of the cost it would take to film your piece, and various limitations. Can it be done? So technical knowledge helps a lot.

With plays I would always bear in mind the confines ofr the stage, and was dialogue driven. Film is a visual medium, and I tended to think out the individual shots. I looked closely at other films to see how they did it technically. You have to be precise and to the point when describing an action in film — what’s on the page is a description of what is on the screen… When you’re writing a novel, you can expose more of your own thinking process, and you describe things ina different way (the author often intrudes more). In a screenplay, it’s generally a good idea to avoid exposition.

Sorry, I’m not writing this at all well since I’m taking care of a baby at the same. Would edit, but she’s demanding.

My initial approach was pretty much the same — I worked out the characters (backhistory works well for me) and the plot and made an outline, but you have to express it differently in the various media, and that can be a challenge.

One thing that was helpful before I got lazy and lost any serious interest in creative writing was http://www.zoetrope.com/

That’s Francis Ford Coppola’s site (got the chance to talk shop with him there in the virtual “producer’s studio” — I was totally unprepared) and they actually greenlight some screenplays. You have to write several detailed reviews of other people’s screenplays before you can submit your own. A lot to learn there.
Hummm, writers tips…. I have 37 pages of them left over on that disk from dragon con that I got this one off off. Perhaps I need to post one a day here. Well here is another one, also from Elrod.
P.N. Elrod – PRO’S TIP:
You must have a really grabbing first sentence and a good follow up to it. Jump into the action/premise and/or character (or all three) immediately. Imagine that your prospective editor is reading your book/story while on a homeward-bound subway in the
evening. (This actually happened in my case with Bloodlist). Not only is she likely to be tired if not burned out from a full day of reading dozens of other submissions, she’s subconsciously aware of the possibility of muggers and serial killers sharing the car with her. If you can completely distract her from such surroundings you are well on your way to publication.

Please note: this device is also good for snagging the attention of an ordinary reader in a store who’ll buy your book and make your
editor very happy. You must also have a satisfying closing sentence to your book/story. In fact, good opening and closing
sentences should be on ALL your chapters to keep the readers turning the pages!
ENTERING THE VAST expanse of the Electropolis Studios soundstage in Halifax these days is like stepping into a time machine.

At least four elaborate sets have been erected to evoke Rome in 1458 for the purpose of shooting The Conclave.

Cameras started rolling Monday on the ambitious 90-minute television project about the notorious Borgia family.

The 21st century intrudes haphazardly, such as when a visitor comes upon a sign stating “NO FOOD OR COFFEE ON SET” or is directed to the Grotto, the designated room for smokers.

The dozens of crew members and actors populating the bustling complex also tilt the calendar back to the present.

But The Conclave, a Canadian-German co-production, centers around Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI.

Thus the waterfront soundstage has been transformed into several lavish rooms in the Vatican to tell a story of electing a controversial Pope.

“It is fiction, but it’s pretty historically accurate,” said producer Bill Niven.

The project, which has been in the works for about five years, is drawing on the complete range of entertainment crafts.

Over a hundred costumes are being assembled, many with large hand-stitched components.

Complicated insignias and accessories have been fashioned from linens and velvet.

Seemingly insignificant props such as a ladder have been assembled from solid ash.

All this effort is being put into a story involving a historical clan often characterized by an unquenchable thirst for power, greed and accusations of murder.

“They were wheeler-dealers,” Niven said. “At the same time, they basically allowed the Renaissance to happen.”

Bruno Robotti, a veteran scenic artist in the film industry, has ensured that the walls of the large Sala Regia set are adorned with suitably elaborate frescoes.

“All of the artists we have working on this, whether traditional or digital, are just amazing,” Niven said.

Production designer Emanuel Jannasch said that The Conclave represents a high mark for him.

“First of all, it’s a bit mind-blowing for us, too. It’s very rare that you build a set that big and that rich,” Jannasch said.

“We’ve built sets that big before. The sets for Shattered City were probably bigger in dimension but the depth of the finishes and the details and the painting and the gilding and all that kind of stuff is at another level.”

None of this could have been accomplished without a lot of research. Jannasch has a workspace at Electropolis dominated by a large bookcase filled with thick art volumes.

“I went to Rome in February (2004). Then in June I was at the Metropolitan Museum looking at armor. Officially, I started in October. It was in segments,” he said.

Robotti, who often works on blockbusters such as the remake of The Manchurian Candidate, said that The Conclave holds a special appeal for him.

“For me, I’ve been waiting for this one for years,” he said during a short break from working on a set.

“I’m interested in that period. When I paint, I paint in that style.”

Robotti also came up with an innovative technique to simulate old marble floors in the Vatican. The effect was achieved by silk-screening paint onto the reverse side of rolls of linoleum.

“It’s a good surface to work on,” he said. “It’s problem solving, that’s all.”

Producers say the cast is split about evenly between Nova Scotians and Europeans, but most of the lead roles have gone overseas.

Locals in the production include Brian Downey, John Dunsworth and Stacy Smith.

If the cast seems worried about being overwhelmed by the visual splendour, they have a good way of hiding it.

Downey could be seen in the Electropolis halls Tuesday showing off his breezy period haircut.

“I’m saving a lot on shampoo and conditioner, as well as time,” he said. “It’s like sending my hair out for drycleaning.”

Niven said that the five-week shoot has about a $3-million budget.

The project has been a particular passion of Halifax filmmaker Paul Donovan, a co-founder of Salter Street Films with his higher-profile brother Michael. Paul Donovan, who wrote the script for The Conclave, declined to be interviewed.

The Conclave is being directed by Christoph Schrewe. He also helmed six episodes of Lexx: The Dark Zone, the old Salter Street sci-fi series.

The Conclave should be ready for showing by the fall. Niven said the potentially lush look of the project may even grace the big screen.

“We’re also planning on doing a theatrical release, as well. We don’t have a distributor yet for Canada. We have to start looking,” he said.

“We’re shooting it in high definition with this amazing camera. What we did was we took the high definition and we sent it to Toronto to the lab and they transferred it on to film and we rented the Oxford (Theatre) for an hour and showed the four-minute clip and it looked fantastic.”

And this may only be the beginning of the story. The production team has hopes that The Conclave could ultimately be expanded to a series of seven television films.

Currently, sales to Chum City in Canada and ARD in Germany have solidified financing for the first installment, which is also designed to stand on its own.
With the Donovan talent this is sure to be a winner. I wonder what role Brian is playing. It will be interesting to see him in a darker role. The only thing I really enjoyed about “The Net/The Web” thing was watching loveable Stan become so scary looking and evil. I bet Brian would be unrecognizable as some kind of evil church guy.
He said he would be playing a very pious man, Cardinal de Mella…. who was quite different from Stanley

Please excuse the delay, but the Zuca Rolling tote was delayed from arriving.

The Rolling tote is pretty darn niffty. I ended up with a navy blue one, since the black were out of stock until the end of January. It has many compartments to keep your stuff in with out it all ending up in a big jumble at the bottom. The double wheels on the back are a bit strange, but they are suppose to help you go up stairs with it. Also the bottom sethave little lights in them that flash if you roll them fast enough…. yeah right, like that is going to happen when I walk. 😛 It is okay to sit on, but not as comfort as the one I made as it is slightly smaller, not padded and needs to have the hadle all the way down to avoid damaging it. But on the plus side, it definately looks way cooler than my homemade one and will pass the luggage size tests for a carry on when flying. 😀
I think that’s the front cover of the VHS tape (I have one like that anyway). It’s a mazingly hard to get on DVD usually peeps are ripped off by dickheads in the States who try and charge 80 dollars per copy. I’d personally get a copy from the original poster of this thread than buy from such rip-off merchants (Amazon.com). The link on ebay that you gave however, seems genuine and a pretty good price too (22 dollars!).
Ah, the one on top. I understand it contains nine eps and costs about $16.00 delivered if in the states. The eps are; Gravity, Thanatophobia, Leisure, A Last Time For Everything, Tide, The Purge, War, Isthmus Crypticus, Pilot short episode.

Which while not widly expensive, is not exactly ‘Fan Pass Around’ rates , since the media, postage and packaging most likely would not be more than $5.00. Six if it has a nice case and cover. I am not counting of course the time of production and hassle of mailing, but those are not normally re-embusable on non-profit ‘Fan Pass Around’ stuff.

As has been mentioned before, the mini-series had the luxury or explaining things, and letting you see all the behind the scenes action, which either caused what was happening, or set it up to happen.

However for over all look, casting and acting…. the movie pretty much nailed it.

How great would it have been if Lynch had been given a LOTR like deal?

Well this Dudette thinks that a lot of it is enviroment. I was one of the few people in my group who lusted after a pc when they became available in the 80’s. And with the exception of two high school buddies who were accepted to M.I.T. I was the only one who picked up *any* skills until windows made it possible for user gumps to run a computer.

You can have the best genes in the world for this kind of thing, but if you do not have access to it at an early age, you will be hard pressed to fulfill your full potential. Which is why I have spent the last twenty year hounding parents to make sure that they had a computer in the house for their kinds to become familiar with. As I have told them, unless you want your kid to go, “you want fries with that?” for the rest of their life, you need to get them on a pc!

I made sure theNeiceletts and theNephew had computers when they were growing up, and it helped them a lot with their school work. I was particularly amused when theLittlestNeice showed her panicky substitute teacher the magic keys (CTRL/ALT/DELETE) to reboot a frozen system. And laughed my hiney off when theSister got a call from the grade school administration office asking why theMiddleNeice was ‘dissing their new shipment of Apple pc’s. 😀

Was I disappointed that none of them became compugods? Sure, but they had their shot at it. And they are all competent users who do not p*ss me off by doing stupid stuff to their systems, so I guess that is some blessing.

I will admit that the mark of a true geek is the passion they have for their computers, but with out the right environment they would never discover their inner geek.

The total problem I had with anything past the more recent history is of course…. sanitation. Let’s face it, there are lots of great people to be during the middle ages but….. yuk! 😛 The beds, the privies, the odor…… 🙁

So I settled on Neffertti, while further back in history, the Egyptians seemed to have a much better understanding of that hygiene thing.

Plus….. since I would remember who I was, I would spend most of my day at my temple site having the workers carve and then immediately cover various ‘pronouncements . Nothing much, just a few things like predicting how Elvis dies, the advent of the Beatles, explaining html code, the rise of the Fourth Reich…. err Republicans… and of course it would all be in English. Muhahahaha!

I would flit from building location to building location to make sure that eventually some Egyptologist somewhere would have to admit that they had found ancient carvings done in English. 😀

I wonder if this is how Nostradamus got his start? Was he inhabited by a jumper?

Yet another good roll for MMM Twack should these ever be brought to the screen with live actors. 😆

I wonder how many other ‘arch-type’ dark hero’s are out there in Anime land just waiting for the right (MMM Twack) actor to play them. 😉

Yes that was an interesting bike.

This evening they re-ran the Jet Bike episode. If I am not mistaken, that was the bike that was built for a biker buildoff and is what resulted in Senior and Junior being offered this show. It was an interesting build, with a great paint job.
