99’s a number, and they have those automatic doors….

I would say that’s acceptable. Numbers are so limiting, and since the Village is so cosmopolitan there’s no reason Maxwell Smart wouldn’t have been sent there eventually…. ๐Ÿ˜€ Ah! The horror! ๐Ÿ˜€

I thought it was the Butler, too, mostly, then sometimes one of the Rovers. Remember the scene with the creepy people in the Rover cave sitting around it as if they were worshipping it in “Free for All”? I thought it might be some underground Hell creature, or something.

I would agree with Barbarella as a single-shot Sci-Fi Sexy Queen, but Lexx and Firefly have more choices as far as groups of sexy people.

Kai’s cute, but he doesn’t do it for me. I would not dare fight Streudel for him :), why don’t you lead Kai over there to the closet with you, and I’ll take Number 6 out to the clearing with me…. ๐Ÿ˜€

Wouldn’t “Lady Death” and Kai make a cute couple? Though I admit I would be afraid to attend the reception….

I guess I was really referring to recurring characters. The Taxi driver in Arrival, Little Bo Peep and Number 86 are all quite cute, but barely appear. And how could we forget the most luscious of the Number 2’s?

P.S. Actually, I’m kinda surprised someone voted for “somewhat references”. Who knew?! ๐Ÿ™‚ I was kinda being silly about the 4th and 5th lines in each stanza, and lines Number 1 and 6 being the same.

This deconstruction thing is sorta fun when you do it without any serious intent! I’m going to go out now and reinterpret the meaning of the stop sign at the next block to suit my own belief system. Wish me luck!

Overall? It’s not one of the choices, but Firefly, most definately, good variety, something for everyone, and they wear really, really tight pants….

I’ll be in my bunk. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

But personally, the Prisoner has my man in it: brains, unshakeable loyalty, boundless energy, overdeveloped sense of justice (but not the type who pretends to fight just to hear himself talk), the voice of the Devil and eyes too blue for God to have made… that combo does it for me.

Not too much for the guys in that show, though, or for the ladies who aren’t interested in prefacing an interrogation of Number 6 by smearing him with a honey glaze….

So yes, I would still have to recommend Firefly. Or Lexx if you go for the not-fully-human crowd.

    Is No. 6 John Drake?
McGoohan did say Drake was Number 6 in a squash game with his stunt coordinator Frank Maher when he was pitching the idea and in a meeting with George Markstein in which they decided not to name Drake because it was going to be expensive. (The Prisoner by Dave Rogers, p.No. 2.)

Since they figured out how expensive it would be, McGoohan has denied it. But before then, even before the hour-long series began, he always had it in his mind that Drake would resign if he found a woman to marry. No. 6 both resigned and got engaged, so personally I think Drake becomes No.6.

    Is Drake Gay?

“He sometimes rebels against the missions he is given. He now looks at women with much more interest, for one of them could be the lucky girl who will persuade him to leave the job and find some other less dangerous way of making a living.” — Patrick McGoohan in an ITC press kit.

(Quoted in The Prisoner: A Televisionary Masterpiece edited by Alain Carraze, in the article “Danger Man” by Jacques Baudou, p.No. 206.)

(I have to thank a Drake Drooler for this next quote)

‘When the character logically indulges in torrid scenes, then I’ll play them, I don’t believe for one moment, though, that Drake would chase any of the girls he meets.

He is the sort of man who has a healthy enough respect for women to realise that it would not be fair on a girl to ask her to marry him while he is away on dangerous missions nearly all the time. His life is too full of risks, too insecure, too roving for Drake to ever fall in love. To do so would interfere with the life of adventure he has chosen. He would like to marry, and he has it at the back of his mind all the time – but it is something he has no intention of doing while risking his life so often. The fact that he is taking such risks is a vital element of the stories. With a wife in the background – and probably children as well – he would be tempted to cut down on the risks. Therefore it would affect his work. This doesn’t mean that he avoids women. He enjoys the company of pretty girls. And there are plenty of stories in the series showing him closely involved – with women. But only when the job calls for him to do so. ” –Patrick McGoohan

The Drake character also mentions in “Don’t Nail Him Yet” that he’s wondering what it must be like to have a wife and children, while playing chess with a married agent in a less dangerous position. (He loses.)

He flirts mercilessly while posing as an encyclopedia salesman in “The Mirror’s New”, as an artist in “Sting in the Tail”, as a blackmailer in “The Black Book”. He allows a very persistent girl he obviously finds both attractive and trustworthy to follow him back to London when his mission is finished in “You’re Not in any Trouble, Are you?”, and he meets and allies himself with his perfect, though Soviet, match in “Parallel Lines Sometimes Meet”, though by the very nature of their Cold War loyalties that relationship is doomed from the get-go.

He gets played and heartbroken by a diplomat’s wife in one of the books that took place during the first season (when he worked for NATO). I believe the story was designed to explain his infamous suspicion of the women he meets in his line of work. So, yes, I think No. 6 is Drake, or at least he started out that way, but I think the evidence points to him being suspicious, with good reason given the way some of the bad girls try to cheat him, but not gay.

    Uh… not that there’s anything wrong with that…. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Neither, for that matter, do I think that a man who thinks any day he’ll be able to escape and go back to his fiancee is gay if he doesn’t flirt with the locals in the Village.

    That is a mighty big gun….! ๐Ÿ˜€

It’s from the Columbo episode “Identity Crisis”. McGoohan and Neilsen play secret agents, and when Neilsen (“Geronimo”) winds up dead, Columbo suspects McGoohan (“Colorado”).

I believe there are 4 “Be Seeing You”‘s in it, but I haven’t really counted…. McGoohan directed it and Falk is a Prisoner fan, so there are more bits and pieces in it that are kind of funny. (Not as funny as this picture of No 6 with Frank Drebbin).

Did find out there’s a real Mrs. Columbo, as someone else witnesses a conversation between Columbo and his wife, so that mystery is solved… ๐Ÿ˜‰

(His performance in “By Dawn’s Early Light” was much better, BTW… that’s the one he won an Emmy for, not this one.)

Life?! I spend much of my time pacing the length of my cage devising ways to jam the management (today by singing show tunes as if no one was listening– they don’t understand that at all) and rewriting my resume in my head. Most of my posts/PM’s here and html on my site are tapped out in a text file on my Ipaq on breaks and uploaded and edited in the morning when I get home. It doesn’t save as much time as I would like, but it does generally keep me from wandering about these addictive little nooks and crannies when I should be sleeping.

Tonight is an exception. I was arguing with Number 18 about which of us most likely won the lottery tonight, and was actually pulled aside by someone we call “Night Watch Number 16” and told that vocally refusing free recognition meals could be construed as displaying a negative attitude ๐Ÿ™„ .

Number 21 (an ally, though she accepted the meal) reminded me wryly it was “Appreciation Day” today, and as I had no intention of appearing “disharmonious”, she and I (disguised as Number 9) took some vacation time (since this was our scheduled day and not a “voluntary” mandatory day). I designed myself an “unmutual” bumper sticker, caught up on some email, then stopped by here to do a real post.

(How did the Prisoner so quickly overthrow my interest in Lexx? Oh, yeah, mandatory frelling overtime!)

    Grrrrrr…….

You’ve already seen these, Logan, but I’ll bite: ๐Ÿ™‚

Be Seeing You: The high-ranking telepaths on Babylon 5 use the Village salute “Be Seeing You”.

The Chair: Simon Cowell appeared in a white Number 2 chair in last fall’s American Idol teaser ad. The Number 2 chair was also used in Austin Powers, wasn’t it?

Rover: Rover has appeared in 2 Simpsons episodes, The Computer Wore Menace Shoes, of course, and the one where the Simpsons join the cult (name I don’t remember). Some little Rover-like things were bouncing around in a Space:1999 episode, thought I think they contained information and weren’t guarding. For the life of me I can’t remember which one it was.

Other Villages: The Invisible Man featured a resignation episode that deliciously paralleled “Arrival”. Then there’s the Truman Show… and Nowhere Man….

Interrogation and Intimidation: The Pretender, John Doe and Farscape have done quite a few things which pieced together feel like Prisoner references to me. There are too many for me to pick out here, however, it’s probably best left to fans of those shows.

Four people I know independently recognized John Critonisms in the “Dreamy Party” scene of A, B and C, one eventually compared it to the season 2 episode: Won’t Get Fooled Again, like many episodes of the Prisoner it includes literary references as well (Hamlet in this case). http://www.farscapefantasy.com/215.html

Colin Gordon died in 1972, and was also in The Pink Panther and Casino Royale.

Eric Portman was ill during filming and passed away in 1969.

Rachel Herbert: Appeared in Danger Man.

Georgina Cookson: Appeared in Danger Man, UFO.

Anton Rogers: Appeared in Danger Man.

Andre Van Gyseghem: Appeared in Danger Man, The Saint.

Darren Nesbit: I hear he did a lot of British TV, but I dunno…. I think I would remember that face. I may have seen him in Danger Man, but I haven’t rechecked that episode.

Peter Wyngarde: Recurring role: Jason King, also appeared in Flash Gordon, Doctor Who, The Saint and the Avengers.

David Bauer: Appeared in the Saint, the Avengers, You only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, etc.

John Sharp: Recurring role: All Creatures Great and Small. Also appeared in Barry Lyndon, the Avengers.

Patrick Cargill: Appeared in the Avengers.

Kenneth Griffith: Appeared in Danger Man. Also probably the only Number 2 still working in the last decade and in several movies with names the public will recognize: Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shaka Zulu, The Lion in Winter, The Englishman who walked up a hill and came down a mountain.

I wouldn’t say “fitting”. I don’t think that’s it, but it does have that Shakespearean tragedy quality in which everyone dies once their destiny is complete. “Fitting”, no, “heart-wrenching and thought-provoking”, yes.

I read on the Sci-Fi boards that Henson wanted it left in in case another network wanted to continue in the future, or the Save Farscape people raise enough money to produce a final episode.

However, the post I read it on provided no source, so it’s only as believeable as you would like it to be.

I thought the “Thank You” from the Sci Fi channel at the end was lame and patronizing, though. ๐Ÿ˜ก

On the other hand, if it had to end, and I do mean if, I really loved the ending. I would love to see it continue, but I really go for that dramatic Shakespearean tragedy/cliffhanger stuff. That’s the kind of ending that people will talk about for years.

Well we will see. I expect it to just break a thousand. Of course I have been wrong before. (shocking isn’t it ๐Ÿ™‚ ) for instance, when I predicted that the brace would go so high, I was poo-pooed. And then it topped out at what? Over 3500.00?

Now does anyone care to speculate what the assassin Kai costume would go for?

If I remember right, the brace even went for more than Spock’s ears did that week.

I’m finding better sci-fi on the cartoon network!

    Another B5 tie-in,

I just started watching my new DVD set, and something I didn’t notice (know about) the first time around struck me. Walter Koenig used the greeting/goodbye from The Prisoner, making the number 6 with your hand over your eye and saying “Be seeing you….”

Anyone know if that was in the script or improv? Just curious…. Anyway, it made me happy.

I bought this for my honey for Xmas. I must say, I never really took to the show. Seeing them back-to-back from the beginning, though, I’ll admit it’s growing on me. I love the art direction, and the portrayal of the military is atypical and more realistic than I expected. The highest-ranking officer doesn’t get involved with the day-to-day adventures, (which is something that irked me about the 1st season of B5), and the highest-ranking officer actually going on the missions is the wise-ass of the group, which is more likey to happen IRL.

I’m also impressed that the female of the group isn’t constantly the butt of sexual innuendo, a cliche in which many shows fall so easily.

You can consider me converted! (Not enough to pay for Sci-Fi again, but I’m buying the second set!)

I don’t believe she cancelled Farscape deliberately to **** off sci-fi fans. My problem with Farscape being cancelled is that it was the last in a long line of changes made to the station that are resulting in less and less Sci-Fi. It is hard to ignore that their new line-up appears to ignore Science Fiction in favor of cheapness.

While there’s nothing wrong with making things that are less expensive, “cheap” is an entirely different story. And she’s doing “cheap” with barely any sci-fi at all. “Tremors” is the closest thing, but I never liked the movies. The only monster movies I like are childhood Godzillas and Alien.

Dream interpretation, talking to dead people, rehashing In Search Of, and Blair-witch/Candid Camera hybrids don’t seem to involve sci-fi at all, unless I’m missing something.

I realise she’s trying to “broaden the definition of sci-fi”, or whatever, but I’m sorry, unless I missed the part where William Wallace harnesses lightning to kill the Loch Ness monster, or Longshanks invents the Rover, I can’t find the Science Fiction in Braveheart.

D’oh!! And I’m already moving! I mixed my formerly private sites with my lexxy sites in a new spot:
    http://www.petserrano.com

The old one will be closed soon.

But thanks! Glad you like it. I try to whittle everything down to only really fun and unique links. It’s very difficult to choose sometimes.
