Anybody here seen the Venture Brothers, a cartoon parody of sci-fi and super villains, etc (amongst other things). It’s not overtly science fiction, and some of the sci fi elements aren’t all that apparent until …certain things happen. Still, it is great fun and should appeal to sci fi fans (amongst others).

Highly recommended, cause its frikking awesome.

You said it all right there, bub. I love the Venture Bros. If you read comic books, like sci-fi, Johnny Quest etc. so forth and so on, there is something here for you. The writing is excellent, frankly much too good for the rest of Adult Swim. πŸ˜€

Traditionally, aliens have always been a large part of what is “defined” as science fiction, and that holds true for a lot of people. The idea that another culture lives in the same relative time and space and possesses greater technology and/or natural ability to insert themselves into our simple earthling lives is part of the terrors of technology and sci-fi.

I also detest what passes for horror movies today, even though I loved things like Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th in most of their many incarnations. Something about the unreality of the villain made it palatable, but the real-life stuff gives me the heebie-jeebies.

As many a person has conjectured on this very site, sci-fi is many different things to many different people…whatevah floats your boat baby.

We haven’t been having very many kids the last few years, but about 15 last night isn’t too shabby for us. Oh well, I guess we save money on candy and such. But what we had were mostly polite, complimentary and cute. Our new niece crapped out before she got here but not before managing to spew baby barf all over her costume before anyone even got a picture. The older brother/nephew is two, nuff said right there, but also tired and scared of masked people so his visit was mercifully short. All in all, not too bad.

That’s the way it is in every genre of television and movie. Who’s the it person, what’s the latest look and hottest style. And of course sci-fi makers are going to jump on that bandwagon to try to bring it into the mainstream. Eye candy is great, but acting ability should factor into it somewhere, even if its the rest of the cast.

Sci-fi is a very unique genre, undefinable by most who watch it as evidenced by the discussion here on Sadgeezer.com. Making it mainstream will destroy its uniqueness. On the flip side of that coin, making it too inaccessible to the casual viewer will render it useless and unairable.

I remember the writers/creators saying they still had stories to wrap up if given the chance. But what new ideas have they dreamed up in the mean time?

My personal theory is that they’ll just start up like its just another day, ala Remington Steele and Moonlighting on the romance front.

Fry is supposed to be more than he appears and more than what they’ve already revealed him to be. We’ll see. Maybe they’ll follow the current trend and kill off a major character and try to offend as many people as possible with their humor.

Who knows. It’ll be something to watch anyway.

Alas, I have not watched it (I don’t even know when it’s on 😳 ), but apparently In-Sink-Erator tunes in. They’ve decided to sue over the invincible character sticking her hand down the sink and mangling her fingers.

From the First Look section of E! News:

DOWN THE DRAIN: The company that makes In-Sink-Erator garbage disposals has filed suit against NBC, claiming the Heroes pilot, which features a girl placing her hand down the sink, flipping on the product and removing her mangled digits–only to have them quickly return to normal–“irreparably tarnished” their product by implying it could cause significant injury and also violated their trademark. Though they did admit it was pretty cool.

Musical discovery or not, after seeing the LG chocolate commercial and the promos for Nip/Tuck, I too have fallen in love with a Strict Maching and Goldfrapp.

Off the musical subject, but I can commiserate with the Dell/McAfee situtation. They have a way of taking the “convenient” personal home computer and twisting into a nightmarish configuation of wires and faulty programming that force you to commit horrific crimes against humanity in frustration. But I’m not bitter or anything πŸ˜‰

Hayseed Dixie are playing at a local biker’s pub in september….unfortunately it’s sold out…
another annoyance at the minute is the fact that at the minute, i can’t download or stream anything that has anything to do with quicktime (including SadCasts ). those nice people at dell saw fit to configure my computer in such a way that when i removed the mcafee security suite (that was free for 3 months) when the trial period expired, it took out part of quicktime with it- stopping it working. i can’t uninstall it and do a fresh install because it’s taken out part of quicktime’s uninstall program, and if i do a system restore to a point before i uninstalled mcafee (at which time quicktime starts working again) and am then able to get quicktime off my computer, i can’t then get rid of mcafee…grrrrr

I myself have wondered, as of late, why no one has put Wonder Woman on the big screen.

I think there are more challenges in casting a female hero, but the the X-men movies showed it is indeed possible. Between resurrecting long dead TV shows, such as the Dukes of Hazzard and Miami Vice, and the current love of the superhero genre in theatres, I think Wonder Woman would be a perfect choice to try (forget all about Catwoman everyone).

I loved the Huntress as a teen, personally I think she’d be a good candidate.

Yes, the anime block on Saturday features some excellent programming. They’re always bitching about low ratings for action Saturdays, I’m sure some additional viewers would make them happy.

I’ve never understood why everyone fell so hard for Aqua Teen myself. It’s okay, but the longer it goes on, the more my interest wanes.

Now, I have to say Robot Chicken tickles me, but I’m also around the age of the creators and alot of their parodies touch on age specific phenomena for the most part.

Venture Bros. is kind of a loose parody of Jonny Quest, it’s really a well written show IMHO. Very well-rounded.

Upon reflection, it surprises me how many of their shows have a sci fi bent.

I personally enjoy Stroker and Hoop. Low humor at it’s finest. At first it seems to be your typical detective show parody, but time travel, alien life, possessions, mind-reading, zombies and mind-control are featured heavily in their storylines.

Totally disappointed. There’s one scene in a commercial when she’s walking away from the camera in a bathing suit/lounging type outfit with a butt so baggy, she looked like my year old nephew wearing a full diaper.

The attraction aspect isn’t such a big thing for me personally, but the lack of artistic continuity is what gets my goat.

I too would like to see more secondary character development. A couple of trips to Mars and some Decapodian refrences do not a backstory make. I was pretty content with the whole “crush” thing that Leela had on Fry, but they do need to do something with it since it took so much of the focus of the last season. Just a chance to see what the writers could do without worrying about the series ending in the next five minutes would be nice.

I too couldn’t stomach Buffy after a couple of seasons, though I did end up watching it off and on ’til the end just out of habit and desperation.

I hated Angel the first two seasons and liked it after that, and liked it even more after Charisma Carpenter departed the scene. I wasn’t happy about it at the time, but her departure made me realize that she was what was off in the series.

My fandom in limited as far as scifi series go. I don’t like Stargate SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis. I can’t take Richard Dean Anderson seriously and I think they’re cheesier (and smellier) than a big ole hunk of limberger (no offense to the cheese). But, even though I don’t like ’em, I understand why some people do.

I don’t know if this is actually true, but I feel that I’m in the vast minority when I say that Deep Space Nine was my favorite in the Star Trek franchise. Probably for the reason that other fans hated it: it didn’t follow the old tried and true ship formula, but did at the same time. The chemistry of the actors had a lot to do with that as well. The point being that I hated Voyager and pretty much detest Enterprise. Again, I see why fans would like it, I just don’t. Kate Mulgrew can’t act IMHO and Scott Bakula always has that bemused expression on his face no matter what he’s supposed to be emotiing. I hated the Borg (once again putting me in the minority), which didn’t help me latch on to Voyager. I kinda get a little tired of flipping by Enterprise and finding Jolene Blalock in her undies, sweating and rubbing all over some member of the crew. Not that she doesn’t fill out those pointy ears, mind you. I just think that kinda stuff has it’s place in enough programming without cheapening Star Trek with it. It just doesn’t seem to fit.

That said, I miss Lexx, Farscape, Firefly and Futurama. They all seem to have that special blend of chemistry, decent storytelling and just plain weirdness and humor. Ah well, such is life.

Just thought I’d update for anyone interested. Baby girl came 20 days early on the 5th and everything turned out okay in the end. No C-sec, but she did get stuck and give all of us quite a scare until the “pale and limp” became pink and crying. Between being stuck and swallowing some amniotic fluid, she was juicy and needed suctioning out. Doc said she had about 45 seconds til an emergency C-section would have been required. 8 lbs even, nary a stitch for mom. All are home, healthy and safe. Whew!

As the midwife who taught the last lamaze class I went to said, “Many women feel disappointed after a c-section because they feel they didn’t have a “natural” birth. Any procedure that results in a child being born is natural.”

    9 lbs. 10 oz.

Whoo! Everytime I see a birth weight that high, I can’t help but think of my grandmother delivering my 10 lb father at home with no doctor. Thank goodness for technology is all I have to say!
