Being a little patriotic here – but where are Karel Zeman’s movies? 👿

😉
Or Metropolis, for that matter…CesareParticipantYat-Kha.
Still too busy listening to this fabulous band to move on to new discoveries. 🙂
http://www.yat-kha.com/CesareParticipantSecurity guard class four with several organs and at least two limbs missing…;-)
CesareParticipant1) Kai – cool, dead, good-looking, has no philosophy…;-) Simply kicks ass and that’s it.
2) Stanley Tweedle – he is simply adorable. Easy to identify with… Voice of cowardice, but quite often also a voice of reason… More complex than he seems at first sight… Stan the man.
3) Daniel Jackson – there is no other SF character I can think of who can manage being a major pain in the ass with so much charm…:-) Plus, I got this soft spot for slightly chaotic intellectuals…
4) Data – he’s just too cute, too funny and too charming not to get in my top 5… Somebody I’d like to hang around with… Perfect mixture of intelligence, innocence and purity.
5) Cat – he is one-dimensional, awfully uncomplicated, silly, noisy and if he wasn’t there at all, it wouldn’t really matter that much – so… That’s why…;-)
CesareParticipantWell, this Lexx fan likes to watch Stargate SG1 (when it’s on), Red Dwarf, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, some british sitcoms… The only series which are now aired in Czech Republic and which I watch regularly are the above mentioned Red Dwarf and MPFC and also (not mentioned yet, but much admired) Nick Park’s Creature Comforts.
CesareParticipantMy location (Czech Rep.) is funny… I’ve always been taught it is in Central Europe, but is seems that everyone to the west from us thinks it is Eastern Europe. I blame the Cold War for that.
😉CesareParticipantWell, didn’t expect Lexx to be on the list (though I think it SHOULD be there), but no Red dwarf? While including crap like Lois & Clark?
Those guys must be kidding.CesareParticipantDon’t know of any…
Ahem – your avatar, imminentdisaster…
Don’t you consider changing it…?
😉CesareParticipant
And what the Hell is wrong with George Lucas? He is a great film maker. MAKE THE LAST THREE STAR WARS FILMS!!!!!!
FS
Now – what is that “MAKE THE LAST etc.” supposed to mean?
Please, tell me you do not imply that a person, who doesn’t produce movies, is not entitled to criticize them?
Because that’s no argument, pal.
Well, I will tell you what’s wrong with George. He’s not really the best director in the world. And in EIII he failed as a story-teller. Once he became the “almighty” with enough resources and technologies that gave him ultimate freedom and power over what SW are or are not going to become, he ruined them.
That’s what’s wrong with George Lucas.
It’s just my opinion, of course. You can disagree. But I don’t have to produce a blockbuster to gain the right to have that opinion.
OK?And I happen to be SW fan, too… I love the original trilogy.
I just don’t admire SW that much.CesareParticipantXevsGondola: Classics…;-)
BTW, I watched Killer Klowns recently… Love the flick. Hard to pick a favourite scene from that one…:-)And I’d recommend this one:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0085672/
Hercules (1983)
The story of the Greek mythological figure, updated in this 80’s version.
Still can’t decide whether I hate or love it. Probably both. A must-see for any B-movie lover.

It is more stylish, unlike SW it keeps your brain at least a bit busy and it’s got depth.
I watch SW when I want just to relax without getting too disturbed or too moved.
As for SW versus ST… Gene was a visionary, at least to some extent. George is not. Plus – give Lucas enough money and new technologies and he’ll include Jar Jar.
🙄
I must admit he’s really good at merchandising and promotion though.Oddly enough, despite what I’ve just written – I prefer the original ❗ Star Wars to Star Trek (with possible exception of TNG).
No need to tell that I prefer Lexx to both above mentioned creations – it is much cleverer, much funnier and a lot sexier… 😉CesareParticipantInigo Montoya… 8)
A likeable character with a lust for life, you do what gets you by while continually pursuing your own interests.
Yep. Sounds like me…
CesareParticipantI like both girls, but I like Zev a bit better. Maybe it’s because she’s the blue one – cause I like light blue tones better than bright rich red tones.
Nevertheless – they’re both cute and hot.My fave Xev look was the goth one from Vlad ep, when those three goth chicks took forms of Xev, Kai and 790…
And Xev’s look in Brigadoom was superb – I loved her variation on Brunnen G hairdo…By the way – which Xev hair in s2 you liked more? The shorter bright red one or the longer – sort of ginger coloured one she had in first few eps?
I still can’t decide.CesareParticipantIt really depends on your definition of “magic”.
At least, there’s a whole bunch of things that seem magical in the Lexx.
In my opinion, there’s much more Fantasy than SF in the Lexx. But most “fantasy” things you encounter are disguised in a SF terminology.
Bio-viziers instead of necromancers, life essence instead of soul and such…
Strictly speaking – it’s all magic disguised as science disguised as magic. (Am I clear?)
Above all, it’s fun…:-)
As for what iStan wrote – the typical lexxic way is to be sceptical about everything…:-)
These space-operas and their evil twins are actually all magic.
At least, if you define magic as some power/skill/something that you cannot understand or explain. And, being convinced that all is subjective and objectivity is an illusion – I stick to this subjective definition of magic.(Time Prophet, life essences, SPEAKING STARS, weird theatres appearing out of nowhere – magical enough from my subjective point of view… 😉 )
If you get into that “different non-human being with different kind of abilities” thing, than you’ll undoubtedly admit, that there’s no magic in The Sandman comics or D&D either…
🙂
But the only important thing is that The Lexx rocks. 😀CesareParticipantThank you, Saddy…
What a pity that you’re running out of Lexx eps…:-(
I always admired your reviews…
And reading more of them is almost like getting more Lexx, if you know what I mean…
Geez. I’M getting sentimental…
Sooo… Thanks! it’s a fabulous review on a fabulous ep! 😀CesareParticipantEllen Dubin and Michael Shanks in one movie… That sounds cool…
I hope I’ll get a chance to see it one day…CesareParticipantI’m interested, Leila.

Can’t wait to read the rest. I hope you’ll finish them soon.CesareParticipantI’m writing a Lexx fanfic, too. It’s a development of two really silly ideas and it’s gonna be really lame.
But it’s fun… 😀Zev, I didn’t read the crossover (because I don’t watch Angel, so it would probably rather confuse me), but I read the other one and I liked it.

I would have to say that I wouldnt want to write rules for letting you play the main characters.. but I would like to develop the setting rules to allow you to play before, during or after the destruction of the light universe. What does everyone think?
I think that it would be best to start with the light zone and dark zone as we know them from s1 and s2… Of course adding the heretics and allowing the players to explore the light zone some time before the Lexx was stolen would be welcome. These settings and events are well-known among fans, they would allow the player to identify with the gameworld more easily and the players may even interact with main characters (or some minor ones) if the gamemaster decided so… And above all – as far as I’m concerned, s1 and s2 stuff always makes me somewhat sentimental, these were the “good old times”. It would be a nice starting point.
It would be the best introduction… A basic module sort of. The game could develop further and deeper then.Ahem…
*Cesare has finished her ‘stating the obvious’ exercise…*
I’m off.CesareParticipant

Yes, Stan has made choices, but his motives were never evil. They might have been immature, as Cesare notes, or poorly thought out, but not malicious or intentionally hurtful (in contrast, say, to Mantrid or Brizon). I think that Stanley is an eternal adolescent who just wants to be loved and cared for.
Rationalize much? 😛
He murdered two people in cold blood in Gigashadow. He twice fired upon planets in cold blood (once Earth, one Robot Donut Planet). He condemned an entire world for sex.
And I’m just getting started.
Selfishness and evil are not mutually exclusive. Oops I killed everyone, but I did it for sex so it’s okay?
Stan was far from being a virtuous person, but…
It was him, who decided to fight Mantrid. It was him, who took the moth, went down to Mantrid’s prison and saved his companions. When Kai was willing to execute Jihanna at Stan’s command, Stan decided to let her go (not knowing that Kai would kill him as well, if he decided otherwise). And so on and so on…
Stanley is not virtuous, but he’s not evil either. And when you think a little bit of what Stan probably had to suffer through before the IWHS events, you will get a picture little more complex and complicated than just “little selfish turd”.
Actually, I think, that the fact that HE condemned HIMSELF to endless suffering on level 9 suggests a lot of penitence and supports the opinion, that Stanley Tweedle was in fact quite a nice guy. (I bet that a lot of nice guys we know would end up doing much more harm that Stanley did, if they got a key to the Lexx.)He’s aware of his failings and the worst struggles he has to go through are struggles with his own vices and weaknesses.
Calling him evil seems somewhat harsh and way too radical to me.CesareParticipantThere are a few things that some people might find a little bit strange in my room.
My sword. There are a few reasons why it’s really weird. Regarding its shape, it’s a replica of a late gothic period piece. But my dad had it made for me back in 1998 or maybe year later, when I was a fresh tolkien/fantasy fanatic, so he decided it should be more “fantasy” less “history”, so there’s one word in futhark engraved in its blade. And now the best thing. The sword was supposed to be a surprise, so my dad could not consult the whole thing with me and the best idea he had was to have the name of my fave LotR character engraved in the blade. Late Gothic sword replica with the name “legolas” in futhark runes on the blade. If that’s not weird and sick, I’d like to know what is. 😈
My little collection of roe-deer skulls and teeth.
My huge collection of graveyard candles and a graveyard lantern. When the shooting of “My giant” movie at the castle of Pernštejn ended, the staff left, leaving a whole nice little cemetery there. And because the castellan of Pernštejn is a very good friend of our family, I got two mock-up ledgers (is that the right word?) as a birthday present. (Frate Danko Alfredo 1900-1918 and Frate Lucian Gavrilla – I don’t remember the dates here…)
CesareParticipantThe ear didn’t bother me at all. (I am a dedicated fan of italian horror movies, never got any problem with gore…:-))
The movie is really nice and lovely, fine idea and all that.
I just think that they could pay more attention to details and execute the whole idea with more care.CesareParticipantWell…
Wake the Dead – let’s say… Friday 13th
Twilight – Night of the living dead
Patches in the sky – Nightmare on Elm Street
791 – Alien/s (?)
I’m not sure that Brigadoom and Brigadoon have more than those eight letters in common (plus that they’re musicals), but nevertheless…CesareParticipant
There should be a whole series: it’s about a bookie, loan shark, or drug raketeer (the guy the Assassin meet up with at the end) and of course, the Assassin (with the heart of gold) and his family.
Lizard, that’s a BRILLIANT idea. It would be marvellous if this would happen. Could be a great series…:-) And even if it wasn’t great, it could be interesting and if the show was german, some czech commercial channel would buy it, sooner or later. They always buy german shows.
MM weekly… Sigh…
😈CesareParticipant
I thought that both ‘Wake the Dead’ and ‘Twilight’ were great episodes Its nice to see Kai let loose.
Yes, Kai malfunctions in general are always great fun to watch.
And I think, that these eps (WtD and Twilight especially) must have been fun for MM to play in. Like a gust of a fresh air…:-)CesareParticipantWake the dead and Twilight are marvellous tributes to slashers and zombie horrors, that’s true. In fact, Wake the dead is one of the very few slashers I like (this subgenre ain’t exactly my cup of tea).
That’s why I asked… Cause it seemed to me there must be tons of allusions throughout the whole series, many of them probably referring to movies and shows I do not know.
The body snatchers scheme seems so…general to me after watching tons of bad movies using similar plot…that I never perceived this as a reference. But it’s pretty obvious allusion indeed.
What I found interesting about the whole alien thing is, that these references are so specific. More like citation… Especially that scene where Stan is trying to get rid of 791. (I am almost certain, he would prefer being confronted by a xenomorph…:-))But that Nook-Brother Cadfael link is a funny (and correct) observation. never thought of it before. I like Cadfael.
It’s a pity I do not know some of those other movies you mentioned.
16th August 2004 at 8:01 pm in reply to: Anybody know any good Apocalyptic/post-Apocalyptic songs? #72664CesareParticipantThis song can be a depressive “breaking up” lovesong as well, but anytime I hear it, apocalyptic visions come to my mind. Maybe it’s just me…:-)
Deine Lakaien – Lost
We did…used to…laugh and
We did…used to…breathe and
And now all is stuck in tears
Your eyes they are burning
Lips remain in taciturnity
No more returningWhat we did had to be done
All our faith lost and gone
What we did we never won
Lost our hope our aim
All is gone
To close the door is never easy
But we can’t ignore
We can’t ignore
What we lost we won’t find
See those eyes
They turned blindAll those…nights warm…as fire
Take them…with me…cold desire
Where teh naked fairies played
The soil…it is…burning
Leaving…gloomy…emptiness
Nothing to sayWhat we did had to be done
All our faith lost and gone
What we did we never won
Lost our hope our aim
All is gone
To close the door is never easy
But we can’t ignore
We can’t ignore
What we lost we won’t find
See those eyes
They turned blindCesareParticipantGeez, thanks for the link, Stan…:-)
The film is no great deal, but it’s quite lovely. But, as Kai’s/MM’s die hard fan, I am probably not being very objective.
Anyway.
He looks surprisingly good with blonde hair.
And… Is he trying to deal with his past or what…? 🙂
Maybe just having fun.CesareParticipantGabriel from The Prophecy. No explanation needed, I hope…:-)
Sokar from Stargate SG1. The best goa’uld ever. Maybe not so hard to kill as Apophis, but he was stylish. Style does matter. Image DOES matter. Sokar had the best image and the best style of them all. Maybe Anubis was almost as cool as him.
Prince from The Lexx s3 and s4. Evil, sarcastic, cynical and admirably witty…
Top Dollar from The Crow. One of the most charismatic villains I’ve ever seen in a movie or a show.
And… let me think about it… There are many more… But I’ll pick Lestat from IwtV. I’ve never been a huge fan of Cruise, but I loved his performance here. Actually, somewhere about this point in his career I stopped hating him. Throughout the whole movie I just begged for him to dismember that pitiable sob Louis and his beloved spoiled brat Claudia – though I knew that would not happen.
CesareParticipant
The list goes on and on. Kinda seems like Stan’s a bit evil to me.
Well… As Kai said – Stanley has made some bad choices…:-) Stan certainly would not deserve ending up at some nice and friendly town on Water. But as you wrote, his punishment was way too harsh. This may sound somewhat strange, but one’s guilt cannot be measured by the amount of damage he has made…;-)
Stan’s not evil. He’s just as selfish as many (if not most) of us. The trouble is, he bacame a captain of the mightiest weapon of the two universes.
Not to mention, that just living a life of Stanley Tweedle is hell anyway…:-)
Stan’s moral and ethical standards are those of a child. Most of the time he does not care for consequences, ’cause it simply does not slip into his childish, horny mind, that there would be any or that they would matter.
An innocence of sort, actually…:-)CesareParticipantShort stories: Saki’s Sredni Vashtar directed possibly by Neil Jordan. Can’t think of the cast though. Esp. Conradin is a problem. More insight into Conradin’s fantasies and imaginary world (not described in the story) would be fine – and maybe necessary.
And I’d love to see one of Richard Weiner’s stories made into a movie by Jan Švankmajer (you probably don’t know Weiner and I’m not sure, if you know Švankmajer, but it would work. It’d be marvellous, actually).Games – certainly Planescape: Torment. I mean, not just Planescape world, but the PT story made into a movie. More accent on the secrets, exploring of the forgotten identities, psychology, less action (but not without action either, of course). Some localities, sub-quests and such would have to be left out, but isn’t waking up in a mortuary with all memories lost and a talking skull floating above you a fine opening? Not to mention the awesome ending. It’s just a dream… I know that adapting the STORY of a game isn’t something filmmakers are usually tempted to do. No idea about who could play the Nameless One. Action heroes like The Rock or Vin Diesel do not work for me…:-/ Any ideas?
No idea about the director either… But the movie should be very dark, morbid and depressive. And of course some nice movie from Fallout or Fallout 2 world. Can’t think of a good plot, but Ron Perlman should play a mutie and in the middle of the movie someone cool like Vincent Cassel, Jon Rhys Meyers or Johnny Depp wearing a vault 13 outfit could appear, totally drunk, and he would shout out something like „Where do they sell GECKs in this stinkin hole…“ (Uma Thurman or Brittany Murphy if the Chosen One should be a female.) And Walken for bad boss (should have a pet golden gecko). And somewehere in the movie the hero could stumble in front of a stargate. The wormhole opens, SG1 team comes out and something funny happens – lot of possibilities. George Miller as the director… (Dull – but justified, I think…;-))
Books – Silmarillion. Not the whole thing of course. Just Fëanor and especially his sons. Could focus on Maedhros (because I like him a lot). Directed by Peter Jackson (so dull of me, again, I know…;-)). Certainly Ralph Fiennes as Fëanor and Vincent Cassel as Caranthir (imagine sindarin or quenya with french accent – lovely…:-)), but the others – no idea.
The other book is from czech author, probably unknown to you, director would be czech, too (what’s worse – the director – František Vláčil is already dead) and all the actors who come to my mind are czech, too, so that’s it…:-]Gee, that was rather long.
CesareParticipantI love some of Michael Jackson’s videos. Thriller of course, that one is fabulous. And Who is it was good…
But my fave is Scream. I like how every detail fits and I like the aggressiveness of the song (and the video). Hate those maudlin lyrics though. And I liked Moonwalker. The movie is pretty silly, but quite lovely and Smooth Criminal is GREAT.But videos I really think high of – Bowie’s “I’m afraid of Americans”, Nick Cave’s “Fifteen feet of pure white snow”, marvelous Links 2, 3, 4 by Rammstein (and Sonne and Du riechst so gut by the same band), Walking in my shoes by Depeche Mode, Crucified by Army of Lovers…
Fatboy Slim is not my cup of tea, but his videos are always perfect. My fave is Weapon of choice – for reasons pretty obvious…:-)
And Faith no more had some really fantastic kick**s videos.CesareParticipantMy faves are The Oblongs, Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister, Allo Allo, Flying Circus…
And I like detective stories like Hercule Poirot or Cadfael…
And Twin Peaks of course (is it sci-fi? I think not…).MASH is also OK. E. R. is OK, too…
CesareParticipantSeries 1 – all the movies. I cannot pick just one or two. Cannot be…:-) The first was the very best.
Series 2 – Mantrid, Lyekka, Wake the dead, Twilight, Brigadoom, Lafftrak, End of the Universe…
Series 3 – Fire and Water, Girltown (that ep is sooo sweet), The Beach, Heaven & Hell
Series 4 – Vlad, Midsummer NightmareUnfortunately, I still didn’t get my hands on many s4 and some s3 episodes, so the list is probably somewhat…incomplete.
CesareParticipantI liked The Net/The Web and when the TV channel that aired lexx here in Czech Republic just left one of the two out (The Web I think) I was quite mad. These two were a nice little experiment and I think it worked.
There were some weaker eps in s2 and s3, but none of them was so bad that it would suck. And none of them was boring, they were just somewhat worse that Lexx standard. And somewhat worse than Lexx standard = better than most things you can see on TV.
Alas, in s4 were episodes that were really bad…:-/ Xevivor is one of them… (Well, Xenia is beautiful and hot and sexy and all that, but that’s not enough.)
CesareParticipantWell, haven’t seen it yet (I think that it has not yet reached cinemas in our area anyway), but I guess I may like it.
And – above all – however superficial this may seem to you – it’s got the divine Walken in it – so, for me it is a must see. Especially when the synopsis and trailer are so promising (trailers can be confusing, I know) AND there’s also Glenn Close in it…
And as I’m not familiar with the original, I’ll be less critical I guess.
So… Haven’t seen yet, but I am definitely going to.CesareParticipantYeah, Frey… Be patient. Eventually, the bus will arrive…;-)
CesareParticipant+ I really like his lips. I think you’ve done a great job on them.
CesareParticipantLovely piece, Streudel. Could use more detail, but it’s definitely the dead guy…
CesareParticipantNice pics, folks…:-)
Well, there’s been some photo-manip in this one, but not that much…;-)
That green thing in the background is a good friend of mine. A silvan elf, y’know…;-)
http://www.sweb.cz/maedhros/svp.JPGCesareParticipantThanks!
Feedback is alwas a pleasant thing, especially the positive feedback…;-)
I hope there will be more to show soon.CesareParticipantMichael McManus mentioned somewhere, that a spinoff about Brunnen G and their voyage to a new home in the light universe could be a good idea. Or as he put it, if there would be a new series taking place in Lexx universe(s), then it should be a spinoff and that such spinoff… (See the lines above.)
He’s right. Brunnen G and their history may be background for some marvellous stories. Even without Kai.
CesareParticipantDexter’s Lab is fabulous.
But my fave cartoons are ren & Stipmpy, Cow & Chicken and… The Oblongs!!!(I don’t like Buffy much – reminds me of Charmed or whatever the original title is – that one with (later without) Shannen Doherty, about three witches… Too much beverly Hills in both of them. But annoying the fans of the show like that seems pretty pointless and childish to me. But yes, I hate her, too.)
CesareParticipantInteresting pieces, Plif.
I’ll take a look at your devart site and drop some comments there…(Esp. the Kryten painting rocks!)
CesareParticipantThanks for the tip, Streudel. Well, my Kai piece is here:
http://www.sweb.cz/maedhros/kai-small.JPGI’ve posted it to Fanart section, but I guess that I may post it here as well…:-)
The next one is gonna be the manly Stanley…:-)Looking forward to your pic…
CesareParticipantWhat about presetting the img resolution with your scanner software?
Or you can change the resolution (or size) afterwards…CesareParticipantThe page cannot be found.
Could you give me a new link or send it or something like that? I’d love to see it.As for Kai & emotions – he certainly has shown some level of emotion here and there. He looks quite sad and shocked when Zev is turning into raw proteins and the “but it’s been a while since I slaughtered a whole room full of petty byrocrats” quote says it all…;-)
But I think that all these lapses are more like recalling emotions than really having emotions. Kai’s “motivations” are mostly intellectual and racional I guess.
But most probably, he’s just dog tired of going on and on and too “lazy” to truly feel something. And also, being around for 2000 years plus having memories of many people, he’s killed, may be the cause of his lack of emotion. Maybe at a certain point his brain just blocked. Imagine it. With all that knowledge, painful memories and after all those years… You would have to get either emotionless or completely mad. Maybe the bio-scholars manipulated the assasins’ brains to prevent any feelings.
(I guess that if Kai became alive and survived long enough, he would return to his “the dead do not” ways very soon, though he would have to replace “dead” with “I”.)CesareParticipantThat idea about Zev escaping and falling in love is great! I am sure, that she would be caught due to the betrayal of the man she would fall in love with.
I think you could definitely come up with a story where Kai regains his faculties temporarily and nearly fufills the prophesy before he meets Stan and Zev.
That could be interesting. But I’d like to see a story from the victim’s point of view. Yep, we’ve seen this in Wake the dead (and Brizon and I worship his Shadow), but nevertheless…
And I think, that if Kai just once proved to be a real threat, His Shadow would get rid of him.
But His Shadow was an arrogant bastard, so, who knows…:-)The Prince story could be very interesting as well…
