Actually, if you read the TD website more carefully, you’ll see that the auction is to be Micheal McManus’s assistant during the boat cruise, and that no kiss from MM is being auctioned.

This convention sounds like it is going to be really fun for the people going– remember to take lots of pics for the rest of us!!

๐Ÿ˜ก Well, the frey, I was going to cough up some homey comforting words about how there are good things about moving– like how you can jettison a lot of stuff you don’t really need. But then I realized that even now, years after my last series of moves, I still catch myself saying “Hey what happened to the -instert missing appliance or household item- bamboo veggie steamer – chinese planter–bookcase–books– we had?”

Right now I am totally OBSESSED with the office move I am going to have to endure in the middle of classes next semester. The college that I worked for actually hired a group of “moving coordinators” who don’t actually do any packing or moving. They just talk to you about it (for less than an hour). The lady from the moving coordinators explained her job to us by saying that she was like a wedding planner but for moving. (Doesn’t everyone hate wedding planners, or is it just me?) I was DYING to know what these people got paid to explain to us morons in the math department how to open a cardboard box and stick a label on it!!

I was going to explain why I am worried about it NOW, but really it is too much– the office allocation is like the mad tea party, with people moving in and out of offices, different departments ousting each other, the administration ousting faculty to take the primo offices, all starting now and continuing through the next term.

I think I will take on the character of the doormouse and try to sleep through it.

I am sooooo behind the curve here!! I have caught a couple of the “new” Dr. Who on the US scifi channel– enjoyed it! But now find you all have moved on to a new Dr already!! I am just getting used to the old new Dr.

Hugo Weaving is amazing, brilliant. The plot: Subversive. The film manages to mostly succeed in the disturbing goal of making the audience root for the futuristic terrorist “Guy Fawkes”. Be prepared to be made uncomfortable. (for example, i wouldn’t recommend it to the guy I know who escaped from the WTC).

My only complaint: Gets a bit heavy handed and simplistic (the writers fault?) . The acting is really good , and the atmosphere chilling, a scary view of the not too distant, and not too implausible future. Modern day twilight zone feel.

Ooooh Great Question! Off the top of my head and I ‘ll make it short!

    5) Mr. Spock. A great character. Providing logical counterpoint to the g eneral nonsense on the original star treck. Made some of the best moments of the series possible– going into heat, trying to kill the captain, etc.

    4) Locutus of BORG. All time best turnaround of a character from good to bad. Shoulda lasted longer.

    3) Cthulu– an alien so frighteningly ugly that it causes madness in humans just to look at him. Thanks HP Lovecraft.

    2) Kai– so cold he’s hot! He also has the mythic appeal of the amnesiac, misused warrior fallen from glory. Wry sense of humor.

    1) Dr Who (the Tom Baker version): Whacky and witty, wins his battles with a generally nonviolent attitude. Not threatened by independent lady companions. He also has the charm of being a somewhat disgraced Time lord.

Here’s an interesting one to rent (had it at blockbuster) A japanese film called the Spiral. Uzumaki or something in japanese. It’s low budget, but quite fun to watch and definitely odd.

So far, the only bad sign I have seen is the StarTrek next generation type wardrobe. However, since the originator Peter Chung didn’t have any artistic input I too am sceptical. I am planning to see the movie & hope to enjoy it in any case. Check out Peter Chungs commentary about how he would have liked to make an animated feature film of Aeon:

I am too far away to go anyway, but I wonder if there is a day pass for people to check it out for one day and not pay for the whole package??

Depending on how big it is, a lot of the ticket cost could be going to overhead for the venue and stuff. It will be very cool if someone in the area could go and get an interview w/ ellen d. and any of the other Lexx cast that shows up! esp. If M.Mcmanus does decide to go, that would be really awsome.

The Dragon con that he and Xenia did’nt make it to at the last minute was still a lot of FUN. I was actually really disappointed that EllenG couldn’t make it either! I think she is really funny.

Its a really big convention in San Diego. I first heard about it when I saw a report (on E channel?) about how important it was for flicks about comic characters to respect the “serious” fans. Then there was a clip of C.T. saying how it was out of the question that her character wear a thong.

Which begs the question: if some thin actress can’t feel comfortable in a thong who can?

I agree that sci fi is totally overlooked when it comes to awards.

Hmmm, I wonder if one reason their are sci fi conventions and not others is that there are a lot of books, comics and genre art as well as just the TV shows.

I think it could work for the dectective genre, if anybody tried it!

    Big complaint:
What is G.L’s problem with women anyway?? Better to have no female characters at all instead of this one vapid, characterless creature. He couldn’t think of how to get rid of her either– hence the sudden death caused by “losing the will to live” (?). This flick needed a Lady Macbeth, or else someone who can play a supposedly completely good and innocent character irresistibly drawn to someone with a prominent dark side.

Here’s one that I feel certain I have pointed out before (hopefully not earlier in this thread– because I am too lazy to check ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

In the season finale of one of the STNG (with picard and riker), there is a strange phenomenon of an explosion that moves back in time. In other words, it starts as a tiny point, getting larger and larger as one goes back in time– so that it is destroying the past. So say it appears at 10:00 it’s a bit bigger at 9:59 — 9:58 … etc.

Well, they have to find the origin of this explosion and try to stop it. In the end, the enterprise crew finally tracks down the location where the anomoly is supposed to start– and it’s not there. So they go away for a while and come back LATER and it IS there! They say something like “we were just to soon before”! Well! (This is like checking for the thing at 10:05 above, not finding it and coming back at 10:10 and it IS there!) If this thing moves backwards in time they would have to go away and have come back SOONER not later, and when they missed it say “it’s not here already”

I like SF with time travel, but they really screwed up by basically forgetting about their own premise about the anomoly

Some ships might need to be aerodynamic, if they intended to land on a planet with atmosphere. That’s one reason I would like to nominate the original Borg cube from STNG as a great ship. So mathematically pure, so unconcerned with aerodynamics! Because of this utilitarian non-planet oriented shape we know the Borg live in space, not on a particular planet.

The vogons are the best and funniest part of the movie. It’s true that a lot of the puns and verbal jokes are shortened, but the movie moves along at a zippy pace and made me laugh. I actually liked the depressed robot better in the movie than in the show (he started to wear on my nerves on TV after a short time).

I enjoyed watching earthsea, but one thing that seriously deflated the plot was reformulation of the priestesses as another set of “good guys”. So the wizard and the priestesses are in opposition because of a misunderstanding of how to do good??? In the book the priestesses are in the service of dark god or spirits, perform human sacrifices and are only allowed to see males that are eunichs. The young teenage priestess is already complicit in the unpleasant deaths of some prisoners sent as a sacrifice, and she almost kills ged too. The book is about being her being redeemed (or redeeming herself by helping the wizard) from a situation where she is serving evil.

I am not sure why the TV show sanitized the priestesses, maybe to be more politically correct, I am not sure. I did like the production values and the actors that they chose.

I now realize that I don’t remember most season endings because I haven’t seen most of them! Maybe it is better that way.

Logan– I don’t know why we are discussing sienfield here but

The last ep of Sienfeld has the group getting arrested for being “guilty bi-standers.” They mock a guy who is getting mugged in a state (Maine?) That passed a law against refusing to aid a person in distress. They are defended by the Johnny Cockrane character to good effect.

And about the Village– Yes I would go live there for a while, I suppose they have a good library, but the beach looks cold. I also like the way that people dress there.

I think with the mysterious time travellers and what not they may have already filled all the “slots” for characters that can appear at will from nowhere and zap people to odd places.

On the other hand, a series ENTIRELY devoted to “the Q-continuum” mitght be interesting. Because anything would go..
