I agree with Pet about “Dune”: David Lynch’s movie is better than the book. Dune is one of the worst written books I have ever tried to read. Full of semimystical goobledegook b.s., no character development– I couldn’t get through it (ok I was a lit major and can be a bit of a snob.)

The movie was a weird visual feast.

Well, I now pay for digital cable so I get to watch really high quality films such as:

    Invasion of the Bee Girls.

Has anyone seen this?? It’s about a bunch of really attractive large breasted women researchers who become sexually isatiable “bee” women. There is a lot of excessive mammary display, and they become “bee” women after standing in front of a really large, cone shaped thing aimed at their crotch ( a giant vibrator?? ). They kill men by getting them overexicted.

PEOPLE GET THE GOVERNMENT THEY DESERVE.

Well, fatguy! I really have to chime in here and say that that is not the case. Determining fair apportionment and fair voting in a democratic system is actually a nontrivial combinatorical problem. Let’s remember here that Al Gore actually won the popular vote (that is he was the first choice candidate of more voters that G.W B. 48.38 to 47.87) The one other time this happened in US history was in the 1800’s. Believe me, I teach voting theory to college freshmen and most of them did not believe that this could happen. The intervention of the supreme court in the election (stopping what would be the usual procedure of taking as much time as necessary to determine who should get the florida electoral college votes) was especially disturbing to me. In the end, GWB probably would have gotten those votes anyway but in their haste for a power grab the republican party couldn’t even wait for a legitimate count.

I hoped that the chaos surrounding the last presidential election would increase the amount of discussion in this country about voting methods, and whether or not there is a more fair, more direct method that should be used (some states award electoral college votes proportionally to more accurately reflect the popular vote, we could get rid of the electoral college, we could use ranked voting etc.) But it seems that everyone has just shut up about it.

The result is that we have arguably the worst president in history.

As for republicans, they are not my favorite party because:

They spend money and energy trying to prevent people from voting, by scubbing polls, forbidding scientific methods in census taking so people are undercounted.

They have a tendency to employ “stealth” candidates and methods. As in the california recall election they work hard to find weakenesses in laws that they can exploit to subvert duly elected candidates. (I would also include the bogus attempt to impeach Clinton in this category a blow job! a thong! get real).

Republicans have the worst fiscal record imaginable! talk about spending!!! OMG. Besides running up huge deficits spending like mad, the money doesn’t even get used to improve the quality of life for average americans.

PS I voted for Ralph Nader!

My favorite episode, so hard to choose. I don’t remember the name of it but here’s a description:

In an attempt to get him to spill the beans, no. 2 is having no. 6 drugged at night. They direct no. 6’s dreams and view them on a large screen. When no. 6 dreams, he dreams of a party. He is going to meet someone at the party, as the episode goes on the party in each successive dream is a little crazier. Finally no. 6 gains control of his own dream and it’s a real trip. I want to go to no.6’s funky cocktail party.

I haven’t watched the prisoner for MANY years, so my opinion might change if I get a chance to see it again.

Well Logan, I have to agree with you about mainstream = death for scifi. As one of the few science fic fans willing to admit to watching Enterprise, I have to say it’s a case study of what your are talking about. This show desperately needs to “re-cultify” itself. I think that it is going to go the way of Earth Final Conflict, which became complete garbage after the first year or so. It seems that they are going to militarize the show —- with some big alien threat so that the wee little enterprize can save the earth — YAWN!

I think I am going to stop watching tv for a while!!

Hi Ho! Did anybody notice that on the cover of the Speaking Parts DVD (at least the one that I have). They choose to include, in the background, a still of M.Mcmanus semi-nude and tied up!? It’s a bit misleading, since it is such a small part of the movie, and it’s a video within the movie so the cover pic doesn’t actually convey the “feel” of the actual movie.

This must be some acknowlegement on the part of the marketers that some of us are buying the DVD so we can look at his stomach for a few moments!!!!

Well, to be honest now that I am going I am very excited to see the whole cast, and see folks from online. Also, when I brought the idea up with my husband I said: Do you want to go to atlanta for the weekend and meet the Lexx cast? All those cute women will be there”, and even though “Kai” is his favorite character, I doubt that he would be interested in going if these beautiful actresses were not going to be there too! We might only stay one night, so I hope we don’t miss seeing McManus, since it is a 4 day event, but really it sounds like a lot of fun. So I guess McManus acted as a sort of “catalyst” to get me to go, but now that I am going the whole package sounds like fun.

Saddy, if you make it they will come! Yes I would watch a homemade Scifi movie. You are right about nothing being on air. The genre for some reason seems to be relegated as childrens viewing, so has to be incredibly bland and innoffensive to everybody. Sometimes I think the US scifi channel would run Barney in outer space.

(Come to think of it, isn’t telletubbies sci-fi? But that created a scandal here in the US because of the sexual ambiguity of the purple one with a purse and the po doll’s foul mouth.) In short, it is you Brits who must now carry the torch of bizarre science fiction. Canadain TV seems to have been co-opted completely as a kind of discount outsource for Hollywood.

Fugly wardrobe, yes! Well, in speaking parts, someone put him in this black jacket that looks 3 sizes too big! I don’t know if its a ridiculous “80’s!” look, or an accident. Maybe the directors commentary on the DVD will address this question! (that is why I bought the DVD). I had a used copy of the vhs tape I got on amazon or Bargoon.com (or should I say Bargadoom!) but I gave it away to another fan already.

I am going to start a new fugly wardrobe thread here if I can figure out how to make a poll.

One of my fave scenes in this movie is when kai pulls the worm out of the back of Stan’s neck and says “This was attached to your brain”. The look of horror and disgust on Stan’s face is precious! Whist has to rank up there as my favorite predator.

Good point, that there are shades of S4 here, what with the giant woman at the end, and the nature of the predatorial alien.

This is a really tough question, and one that I tend to vacillate on. Sometimes I prefere one, then the other. I think that Zev is prettier, and yes, had a more intensely romantic role. But Xev is funnier, and has a little more charm. It would have been incredible to have seen the two together in S4– Zev could have been Xev’s “other self”. That way we could have done a head-to-head comparison!

in reply to: The WAR! – Who is on Who’s side? #65356
    lizard
    Participant

Well for me (a US citizen) this war appears to be unjustified– since we have been able to bomb selected targets in Iraq for years, and they have been under a no-fly zone. Why now? Why this big invasion? I don’t believe that GWB wants to liberate the children of iraq out of the goodness of his heart and not much evidence has been shown that Sadaam (awful though he is) was about to embark on a new agressive assault on some other country. Invading another country should be a last resort. Should we take over the entire chunks of the third world because many goverments in africa and other parts of the middle east and asia are doing a bad job running their countries??? Do we intend to rebuild Iraq? Can we really afford it? Have we rebuilt Afganistan– aren’t we accused of sticking the UN with most of the bill for that? I think that invading a country to get rid of a leader that we don’t like is decadent, and opens the door to other countries making pre-emptive strikes (it has been pointed out that the Japanese considered pearl harbor to be a pre-emptive strike). This is all just my opinion and is not meant to be insulting– i just have many questions and misgivings about this drastic action.

Well, if I had know J.Hirshf was in it I would have watched more of the show. I liked N.Bennett, but I too became bored very quickly- I think that I stopped watching 15 minutes or so into the show. It’s funny that you mention the casting, because early on in the show there is supposed to be this room full of bounty hunters (or assassins)– and they look and act about as threatening as a bunch of catalog models! And it’s not that model types can’t play dangerous, threatening or tough characters– look at movies like species, tomb raider etc–

How come the short station ID segments that scifi shows right before the shows come on are more interesting than the shows????

Well, this is all very interesting. I agree that this outfit doesn’t appear in the tv show as seen by me. Maybe it’s what live kai is wearing when he gets devoured by Xev?

It’s interesting that you saw that B.Downey is taller than M.McManus– because on the show it looks the other way around! Although they seem pretty close in height, maybe it’s the big hair that has me confused. I also noticed that the boots he wears as Kai have no heel at all, and Xenia is always wearing these tremendous heels. I figured they were trying to even out a really big difference
in height. I guess she is very petite.

Sometimes i think that loving Kai is like loving a cat (a really expensive pure bred kind of cat)— Xev shouldn’t necessarily expect any affection back and at least she doesn’t get clawed with that wrist thingy.

In one’s house, Kai would be there just to lounge around looking beautiful and killing inconvenient critters. Stanley on the other hand is a dog.

I think the first to harness insect technology for their own purposes were the Brunnen G. too. After all, they had to fight the insects, and one has to learn from ones enemy.

This discussion of an experiment gone wrong makes me wonder if things could have been different– in a less lexx-like universe maybe insects and humans could blend successfully into some new species, and not eradicate each other.

OK, I know that this is a bit of a pointless point, but there is no censorship of cable TV in the US. Each channel pretty much decides for itself what is acceptable, there are plenty of bare breasts shown on “Wild ON” for example. The absurd behavior of US SCIFi channel is due to their own fear that someone in Idaho will start a morality campaign against them if a nipple is shown during Lexx.
Indeed, there is a lot of nudity on the cable public access channels in NYC (at least when I lived there). The silly aspects that you are talking about are the result of MARKET forces such as advertising and whether cable distributers will agree to carry a channel. The thing that gets my goat is that we pay extra for cable, and one would think that they would not then slavishly bow to advertisers etc. but apparantly that is not the case!

Here’s an idea that will get you 4000 years more of plot time. The crew, except for 790 and sometimes Kai, was is cryo sleep for 4000 years between series 2 and 3. Now, who is to say that they were really out of it the whole time? Clearly something dramatic happened to them, how else did they end up in some afterlife on fire and water? Maybe they just cant remember the time between when they went into cryo-sleep and “woke up” on fire and water. 790 would remember but he is not telling. A whole new series could have taken place during that 4000 years, ending with some cataclysmic event that sends them to fire and water, with some kind of “newborn” amnesia.

I have this theory that Kai was starting to fall in love with the original Zev, and never got over her melt down in terminal. The reconstituted Xev is really a very different person from the Zev that he lost, and seems to have been drawn to. Check out their interaction in the movies. He can like Xev, but really she is a creation of Lyka–made up of various proteins and he can’t love her.
