I am starting to reply to myself…..but oh well I am travelling and have nothing to do till my plane flight… so Here is my suggestion for remakes: Most of Vincent Price’s B movies. There is some good material there, especially the ones inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. I’d like too see a well made “Mask of the Red death” for example.

She then proceeds to attach the human ear to her plastic pal. Pan back to see a decapitated Elephant… “Now bring me the head of Dumbo!” she barks at her father….

Ha Ha! Logan, that is the movie you should make! But about the ear, I didn’t think it was too too gruesome, just ICK. But there is a long tradition of ears being cut, besides the Van Gogh thing mentioned above– Doesn’t someone get an ear in a box in a Sherlock Holmes story??? I forget which one.

I downloaded it too! I think it’s quite good. I like the choice of camera angles and music. Interesting without being too arty! I want to see more installments — it would make an excellent webshow or tv show.

But the ear thing is soooo ICK.

There should be a whole series: it’s about a bookie, loan shark, or drug raketeer (the guy the Assassin meet up with at the end) and of course, the Assassin (with the heart of gold) and his family.

The Godfather– When Prince tells Bunny to hide the gun in the toilet when she is supposed to eliminate Xev and Kai.

Solaris– S3 when people (living or dead), or copies of them appear apparentely generated by the planet in some way. (This isn’t really a good example, because in S3 we find out the mechanism)

I think Quentin Tarantino directed “Prime Ridge”.

oh man! What kind of a fool actor would try to step into Yul Brynner’s shoes? He is amazing in West World.

You are so right Nursewhen– why remake a classic that probably can’t be improved????

Maybe they are planning to do to Yul. B. what they are doing to Sir Lawrence Olivier in “Space captain and the world of tomorrow” or whatever it is called. They are taking an archived performance and digitally placing it into the film. I wonder if they have to pay anyone. So maybe they could paste Y.B. into the new version with Gwenyth paltrow or whoever.

One of my favorite hero-villians (yes, a hero and villian) is that shag carpet/ pepperoni pizza monster from the original star trek. The one that could tunnel through solid rock and was only killing people to protect its eggs. The communion between it and spock was very touching.

The people magazine blurb that I saw went on about how much weight C.Th. had lost (implying how great that is which is a little weird because it’s not like she looked fat at the oscars.)

Besides, Aeon is a comic, and no actual woman could have her proportions (which don’t actually look ana. to me). It seems like she should be played by a tall, lanky but muscular woman.

Sorry guys but I have to agree that Charlize T. is the wrong type. Like casting Leonardo Dicaprio as Superman or something.

Aeon in the cartoon is an angular, classic beauty. C. T. has a very rounded baby face and a button nose. And they are going to have to draw eyebrows on her to get some definition and drama in her face. On the other hand, I am not exactly a casting agent! So I suppose they know what they are doing. We’ll have to see.

Philosophy in the Dark Zone What is the nature of evil on Lexx? OR Would you toss your friend off of a moving Gondola over a lake of fire? A philosophical discussion on LEXX symbolism, religion, and ideology… Political ideas of the Cluster etc. What statements does LEXX make about the world we live in, and how we interact with others? What are the major messages of the show? Was S4 more satirical or farcical? etc.

Well, seriously, it would be better for the show to have one panel rather than none– and it sounds like only one person didn’t like the one I quoted above. I think that you should try to figure out what set that person off so that they didn’t buy the idea.

We need to retitle and repackage this idea, into one everone likes! I think it just needs a little more focus

Try resubmitting with a new title and a couple of changes.

What about “Lexx villians and heros : How can we tell the difference? What is the nature of evil on Lexx? OR Would you toss your friend off of a moving Gondola over a lake of fire?”

Something like that. Personally, I frequent the boards and get bored by fans interacting and or fighting with each other, so the scifi population at large would probably decide to take an extended coffee break during any panel that doesn’t talk about the most interesting aspects of the show. (Which makes me think that a new panel on the music and costumes would be really cool, but unless women are in charge of DC forget it!)

Hi Dude from me too (JJ? is that you??).

I have to confess that though I only watch it sporadically, enterprise really isn’t that bad. Especially if and when they decide to splurge on the special effects. I like it when they have scenes with the Xindi that can’t get out of the water for instance. They need to have a whole show about the water Xindi, but I think they don’t want to spend the money.

I wonder that no other show picked up on the appeal of excessive use of special effects as Lexx showed the way.

You could try reading for a while instead. There is lots of interesting fiction out there (it’s odd that many SF shows are all similar, but there is such a variety of fiction.)

Ok, now we have come up with “Buffy the insect slayer” 🙄 It is actually starting to sound less like lexx and more like a show UPN would make.

And what is this about no time travel??!! Thats what the Vulcan science directorate always says on Enterprise. I would hate to think that the “beans” have taken on the characteristics of the Vulcan high command. Besides, Xenia would own everything and then she could do what she wants!!

Hee Hee Hee, wouldn’t it be funny if she wrote the show so that kai, now alive and trapped in another dimesion, pines for Xev but she ignores him, while she gets the key back from stanley and forces him to chase around the universe after Prince—

I think it’s a good thing that I never considered becoming a TV writer. But really, the teenage insect slayer thing could work!

Unless he goes to a surgeon that makes it look like he didn’t have anything done he might end up looking like the post facelift Harrison Ford, and even Al Pacino looks way too done. Meanwhile actors like Sean Connery and even Mel Gibson who seem to have aged (naturally?) actually look better.

But I like your idea of going back in time.
No, instead of trying to make him look 28, it would be better to cast a look alike 20 year old as young Kai, and then have Michael McManus play his own father or something. Whatever can manage to do (if they manage!) I hope there is enough money for lots of special effects and artificial planets or realities. I liked the “fake” arty look of the show in s2 and s3 the best.

Watched the last 15mins “Queen of Blood” on digital TV. It is a pretty old movie but with some good ideas. It’s about a greenish, beehive do-ish vampire alien that lays eggs (in what looks like green jello) all over a space ship.

Also, part of “Angry Red planet” which gave me a new appreciation for low tech special effects. Some really fun film effects, like reverse images and odd colorization.

Ok, I see the point that this is just a rumor, but it is a rumor that comes directly from someone involved. I am glad that Xenia Seeburg is optomistic about doing something else with a Lexx theme.

It’s true, that the ending of the show, esp the part where kai finally dies for real (I guess for real the second time in the series) Is an amazing ending and I thought that it was really fitting. I liked the way it echoed the scene in IWHS and really brought things full circle.

On the other hand (the third hand!) There are a lot of undeveloped stuff where this could go. For me, it would be important that things in any movie would be very different and new, as opposed to just literally rehashing things from the show.

A radical example: Last time we saw Kai, before getting imploded, he was alive– something really different for his character. Why not keep him that way for a while?? Would Xev still like him if he’s a vunerable, ordinary guy??

Maybe the quantum effects created by the faulty particle accelerator sucked him into one of the other 10 dimensions of space at the same moment that the thing exploded— I like the idea of them finding him somewhere, his character could be very different. Getting out of the dead-dead end could really change the show. Xev could be more clusterlizardy and kind of be the superhuman one for a while! Since Xenia S. seems most interested, maybe more of her character could be explored.

Anyway, if they get an interesting plot and lots of money for FX there are lots of things they could do that would feel fresh and not streched to the limit like S4 was. I think the only thing wrong with S4 is that there was too much of it! S3 had a very focused, consistent feel that I missed in S4.

I think the end episode of Lexx is awsome, provided that one fast forwards past all of the scenes that don’t include kai—–

How about a topic that focuses more on the content of the show? The show is over (for the moment at least) and I think that it might be nice to look at the work as it stands.

Some topics that might get people talking, esp. if clips of the show can be shown:

    1) Lexx: Homophobic or Homoerotic?

    2) Lexx: Is it funny or just weird? In a review for the last episode TV guide criticized the show for not taking itself seriously enough. Is this a fair criticism, or an example of a mainstream critic not “getting” the show?

    3) Philosophy in the dark zone: What is the nature of evil on Lexx?
OR Would you toss your friend off of a moving Gondola over a lake of fire?

    New edit:
I had another idea that might help bring in people attending the convention who are not necessarily lexxphiles– a discussion of the effects, with a screening (if possible) of one of the “making of” segments.

One of the things that really sets the look of Lexx apart was the use of extensive cgi to create a world for the characters to inhabit. How did they do it? I know that all of us die hard fans have most of the Dvd’s with the making of S3 for example, but a lot of people from a wider scifi audience might be interested in viewing a making of segment– especially if expenses and logistics conspire to prevent the stars of the show from making an appearance this year. 😥

The point ADM, is that the hysteria seems to be confined to the media. I teach on a large college campus in a conservative medium sized city in the US and NO ONE CARES about this nipple thing. I have heard of no one being “offended” whatever.

In many states in the US, including New york it is perfectly legal for women to go topless in public anywhere.

Given that people here will try to sue over anything to make a buck, including hot coffee, I am not surprised someone is trying to “sue”– good luck.

What is offensive and ridiculous to me is that a station (not a cable station– just a regular broadcast station) can be fined for showing a female nipple but not a male nipple. I bet that this would not hold up if challenged. Not that CBS has the guts to challenge anyone. This is the station that refused to allow a moderate-liberal group to purchase time for an anti- Bush commercial during the superbowl.

Dont get confused between real public opinion and the latest bruhaha on CNN, which has become increasingly celebrity “scandal” oriented since OJ simpson killed his wife and they got great ratings from 24 hour a day coverage.

This “scandal” happens to coincide nicely with a new republican initiative to crack down (nipple down?) on broadcast television in the US so they look like republicans are doing something for the religious conservatives that they need to vote for them in the next election. Otherwise I seriously doubt the republican oriented news services such as Fox , Cnn and MSnbc would be talking much about it. They would still be trying to make a flap about gay marriage in Mass, (but that fell flat because most main stream americans don’t care about that either).

I enjoyed all three movies, but there is no question that the second two don’t approach the original in terms of the story and the characters.

    Some of my complaints:

I for one got bored in 2 and 3 with the saintly portrayal of all of the humans. The character of Morpheus, so interesting it the first, becomes so uninteresting in 3 that he could have been dropped from the movie! The programs Smith and the nightclub owner (the frenchman?) were the only three dimensional characters left. I like Keanu Reeves, but even he was getting a bit dull.

I even think that they did Smith a disservice in the end, making him a big evil antichrist instead of what he was: a sentient program trapped in a matrix, interacting with humans that he has come to find repugnant. Smith didn’t enslave the human race (the other computers, or the architect, did that) and he didn’t make the planet unihabitable (humans did that– remember they “scorched” the sky), So how is he the ultimate villian? Because the actor playing him had so much charisma that they had to make him the focus????

By becoming a complete fantasy battle of humans vs machines this movie took the blue pill

Everybody who gets the chance should check out Brian Greene’s NOVA (on pbs in the us) series about string theory, called the Elegant Universe. His book is very nice.

    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/

This series started with a nice historical introduction to modern physics and makes use of computer animation to get the ideas across. (The presentation is almost completely free of mathematics– a good or bad thing depending on your tastes.)

I really enjoyed the discussion of quantum mechanics. (Space at the quantum level is depicted as a crazy bumpy place with wild music) The pictures showing the difference between Newton’s concept of gravity and Einstien’s were the best I have ever seen.

There are also interviews with some physicists like S. Weinberg who are very interesting to listen to.

Everyone interested in writing scifi should tune in– because in string theory there are plenty of extra dimensions and possible multiverses to play in.

In general, I think most shows cant deal with having relationships consummated, not because it is inherently a dead end in the plot. I think the writers can’t deal with a mature relationship. TV also will NOT deal with the possiblility of ship mates having sex and then not
“getting married”. RIDICULOUS! Why would anyone still be getting married in the 21st century anyway?? On farscape, maybe when the “girlfriend” of one of the main characters had sex with his son, she thought that she was doing him a favor. The characters are supposed to be from an alien culture so why do they have to act like high school students???

I think sexual tension can continue after people (or creatures) have sex– what it T’paul has sex with both Archer and the engineer??? Oh yeah, that would be “immoral” according to the highschool prom code and this morality cuts across all planetary systems…

After all, pre-purchased Dragon Con tickets (and even plane tickets for some people) are not refundable and it could be that some fans planned to attend because they particularly wanted to see each one of “the big three” Brian, Xenia, and M.Mcmanus. I was driving distance so had the choice of cancelling and only losing the price of the dragon con tickets. We decided to go anyway and had a great time in Atlanta, but I can see why some fans who had made more arduous (and expensive) arangements to get there would feel let down.

I don’t know, maybe she made the commitment and then thought better of it, or was just to worn out to go (this applies to MM as well), which I think everyone can understand, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t disappointed. I don’t think her behavior was “bad” just a bit childish — making up an excuse and all is a way of temporarily avoiding creating bad feelings.

I want it when it’s ready! Never could get it from the dowload section– I’ve got at least four more people who work with me interested in seeing it!

FOUND on my computer! Two interviews (what a sad groupie eh???) playable in real one player, one of them probably corresponds to the above, with MM (and others) talking about Brigadoom, and another where he (and others) is being interviewed about the show in general. They look different from what I have on the making of segments from the DVDs, but i have the US version and maybe these are included on the british release.

If someone tells me how I will be happy to upload these somewhere……or attach them in an email for someone else to upload….

Disclaimer: I hope this isn’t breaking any law—-I originally got them off the web but don’t know where.

Here is an interview that i think plays in realplayer. It is not included in any of the making of segments that I have on the dvds…

Maybe it is the one elmey is talking about.

Well, I will chime in with a discussion of some of it. I have the canadian/US release of S1–S3 dvd’s, so can comment on the extras there.

Far and away my favorite (besides the Micheal McManus interview on S2V1 in which I cannot register what he is saying because I keep getting distracted by all that flowing hair) is the Making of S3 segments on the first few S3 dvds. To watch the making of as a whole, it is necessary to have all of the parts, and change dvds, but it is worth it to see the “making of S3” as a “whole”. DrDel has a review of this on her website too. Good things about this “making of s3” include: we get to hear a fair amount from B.Downey, N. Bennet and M.McManus about the filming— and their characters. N.Bennet tells a funny story about fire being “hot” but when he speaks down the well it was so cold in reality that they had to get a heater to blow heat up into his face so his breath did not show. This kind of interview is fun, because it gives the viewer an idea of how the “illusion” of the show is created.

There is also a hilarious clip of BD discussing the nipple clips used during “the key” episode– again not something a viewer would think about, this is a must see.

The clips of the green screen work are also really interesting. One finds out that B.D. would really rather not hang from wires for extended periods of time, and by contrast M.M seems to like any part of the job that involves acrobatics on wires, being sunk in water etc. It would have been interesting to hear Xenia interviewed about this, because she has lots of action shots in S3, but she isn’t (at least not in the parts that I remember). Ellen Dubin also talks about sitting in a hot steam bath with real fire, so it seems as if appearing in Lexx did involve a small element of danger, or at least discomfort!

Apparantly, everyone thought that the gondola was uncomfortable, and hot, so I guess the sweat on all the actors was real.

I wonder why there is no “making of S4”??? No time? No money? No one willing to talk to the carmera???

I didn’t watch TV at all last night, it wasn’t even on. I think that is somekind of record for me. Unlike FG, I am used to having the TV on ALL the time, whether i am actually watching it or not.

Tonight is star drag night. We will see how the crew is getting on in their search for the Zindi (oh yeah this is a nonscifi thread!). Last week there were actual computer generated creatures, but they didn’t really blend in with the rest of the shots. Which made me think about Lexx, and how in S1-S3 there were so many FX components, that even though they might be cheaper than those of enterprise, the sheer number of them created a kind of pallette that ended up looking more consistent and therefore “real”.

I continue to be melted by all the scottish accents on Rebus. It’s absurd how sexy I find them! Why??? My ancestors obviously didn’t like the place else they wouldn’t have left—- (or maybe they were asked to leave). I also can’t figure why brits do a better job with murder mysteries.

Black adder was a hilarious show! I whish someone would run it again.

Currently, all I am watching regularly on TV is Rebus ( I’ve only caught a couple of episodes so far, but I like it) and Enterprise, along with too many music videos. Annoyingly, BBC america plays way to many “trading spaces, what not to wear, fixing the garden” shows instead of classics like Blackadder, but I am grateful for the mysteries like Rebus and Cracker.

I might check out Carnivale on HBO, a show about a bunch of Carney’s travelling in the “dust bowl ” era of the US. It sounds like it might be sinister enough.

    DragonCon Impression from Lizard

I was there on friday night, saturday and sunday morning.

We arrived in town a bit late, but made it to the friday mixer. Mr Lizard and I were drinking at the bar and I spotted Patricia Z in the distance– over at a table containing what turned out to be a collection of lexx fans! I ran over to tell her how cool it was to see her in person and it turns out the guy she was standing with was Jeff H. who I then recognized. They laughed at me a bit about being so excited about seeing them– but really it was quite fun. Patricia is taller than she seems on TV and even cuter. I forced them to follow to the Bar to meet my spouse where we chatted with them and some other lexxians. Brian D. was also at the bar and I got introduced–

Jeff H. turns out to be this completely ADORABLE guy! Very cute in person! I have no idea where the 790 character is coming from because he is such a sweetie-pie. Brian Downey is very suave, and taller than he looks on TV, with a very commanding personality– funny that he plays such a “wimp” on the show!! Brian told us a funny story about Kai’s brace misfiring during filming — it flew up into the air and while everyone was looking to see where it went SMACK it lands on the camera man’s head. Sounded dangerous (he tells this story much better than I do BTW).

It turns out that Jeff H. wrote a lot of my fav episodes (disturbing maybe because they are the most perverted– but I told him they were very funny).

Louise W. arrived on Saturday. Patricia and Louse were gorgeous. Louise was at the MTV music awards the day before and hadn’t slept for 2 days– but looked as fresh as a daisy. My hubby got both of the ladies autographs. Patricia was especially friendly and seemed really flattered that I was so excited to see her (which I was).

The con itself was wild, completely packed with lots of people dressed up. Lizard and Mr. Lizard spent part of both friday and saturday night at the bar at the Hyatt just checking out the other con attendees. There was a very authentic group dressed as the stars from the matrix, and invader Zim, many princess Leas, a group of Xmen, orcs from LOR and tons more. Since we had to rush out of the house on friday because we were running late I LEFT my camera at home and have no pictures! (I continued to act like a giddy ditz for the rest of the weekend as well. )

Before the blue planet bash we had martini’s (ok the kid had a shirly temple) and sushi at a japanese place near the hotel (the scary thing is that the sashimi appetizer at the fancy japanese resaraunt drinks and rice cost little more than the lunch we had a the sports bar earlier that day!) The blue planet bash was fun, located at a bar overlooking the lobby. I would have eaten way more chicken wings than i did but remembered the lesson from Gone with the Wind that a lady does NOT eat too much at a party where she wants to be a belle!!! We got to see a short called “Little Dickie” produced by Brian D. If you get a chance to see it DO (it’s kind of a short version of Oklahoma 🙂 ). Jeff is now writing a kids show that looks really good, here’s hoping that it gets shown in the states!!

I had enough beer to say some more appalling things to Jeff H. Did I say he is adorable in person?? I was trying to be FUNNY when I complained about the cost of the super-duper victoria secret push up bra that I bought specially to wear to the autgraph table so that I could lean over while getting M. McManus’ siggy, all for nothing! sigh! But even though I was sorry that Xenia and MM couldn’t make it, meeting everyone else was so much fun I really didn’t miss em! Midnight rolled around and we had to go (otherwise Mr Lizard was going to turn back into a pumpkin or a rat or something). Someone who stayed at the party later will have to take it from here and fill in the spicy details!!!
